riverwatchbucknut (Apr 27, 2005 2:09:01 PM)
Kyle, How are we standing with Harangody? I think some rebounding presence would be good along with the stars we are after? Any time frame on his decision?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:09:48 PM)
Ohio State is in a dogfight with Purdue for his services. I hear Notre Dame is also re-entering the picture. I think if Ohio State lands Greg Oden, Harangody will be kind of tough, but still possible. If they didn't get Oden, Harangody would likely end up in Columbus. Harangody will probably be a summer decision

Buckdub (Apr 27, 2005 2:09:53 PM)
I think we're all wondering the same thing right the THAD 5 going to happen?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:10:31 PM)
It's too premature to say it IS going to happen, but I will tell you this... the possibilities are very real that it could come to fruition. Ohio State is doing very well, and it is definitely not a pipe dream whatsoever

drderm (Apr 27, 2005 2:10:38 PM)
I know we are waiting on the big 2006 commits, but has there been any rumors about the juco big man from cleveland?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:11:24 PM)
Darrell Harris, I hear, will likely end up down the road on I-71 in Cincinnati. I don't know if Ohio State ever really tried their hand with him after being released from Siena. The Bearcats probably will get Harris

riverwatchbucknut (Apr 27, 2005 2:11:30 PM)
What is the latest with Dallas Lauderdale has he been offered yet? When do you think he will make his decision and who is our strongest competitor for his signature?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:12:25 PM)
Lauderdale has been offered, and it's my belief that Ohio State stands a very good chance of landing him very soon. I would not at all be surprised if Lauderdale decides fairly soon after the 2006 targets. Syracuse is probably the competition

Guest (Apr 27, 2005 2:12:30 PM)
Any offer news on Raymar Morgan? That guy is a must get. A hustling, athletic 4 man with the frame to be a beast. He is a winner too.

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:13:26 PM)
Nothing new with Morgan. It's Michigan State and Ohio State most heavily involved. I think Morgan is still someone the staff is going to pay close attention to over the next couple of months. He could still be apart of the "five" so to speak, or he could also be the sixth man in this class if they get all the guys they are after

Buck1 (Apr 27, 2005 2:13:47 PM)
Kyle, Do you truly think that Conley and Oden are a package deal? Do they go to the same school or go their own way?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:14:33 PM)
Conley and Oden will end up at the same school, and if they don't, something drastic will have had to happen in the next two weeks. As of today, however, I am pretty much certain they will end up at the same place

MJ (Apr 27, 2005 2:14:42 PM)
Any visits coming up soon?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:15:50 PM)
Next weekend, Conley and Oden will be on their official visits. Thaddeus Young is probably going to be there too. It's not out of the question all five players (Conley, Oden, Young, Cook, and Lighty) will be on campus at the same time... although the scheduling is still in the works with the others

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:16:06 PM)
I want to add for clarification, that next weekend is May 7-9

Guest (Apr 27, 2005 2:16:14 PM)
are there any sleepers from ohio who are impressing during the early stages of aau ball?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:17:21 PM)
So far there's really no one that you would consider a sleeper performing well that you haven't already heard about. Jon Diebler is exploding, Dante Jackson is playing well, and some of the same guys. I think as far as targets outside of Ohio State's perspective, Heath White and Adrian Graves are two guys that have impressed some folks.

riverwatchbucknut (Apr 27, 2005 2:17:26 PM)
What is the time frame for Lighty's decision I know things change but I thought you mentioned he would have made it by now?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:18:30 PM)
Lighty should be done by the end of June. I hear his mother is wanting him just to take his time and take his visits. Ohio State and Syracuse will get visits, and Arizona and Michigan still have a chance for one as well. I think the next five or six weeks things will definitely get wrapped up, and I do realize we tentatively expected it to be over with by now... but there's no rush, so they are taking time and having a thorough decision

buckgrad (Apr 27, 2005 2:18:41 PM)
Kyle, do you have any idea on how some old buckeyes are doing like Ken Johnson? They still playing somewhere?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:19:33 PM)
I haven't followed very closely this season, but last I knew Johnson was in the NBDL while Scoonie Penn was overseas. I am not sure about some of the other guys. Johnson had been doing well previously, but I don't think he's going to quite make it to the NBA. Penn just can't shake the size concern. Otherwise, he'd be in the league

Guest (Apr 27, 2005 2:19:40 PM)
anything new with james dews? osu still involved? does he have a leader?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:20:12 PM)
Ohio State is not really involved with James. I would not say he has a leader, but I think Xavier and Dayton are doing well with him currently.

Buckdub (Apr 27, 2005 2:20:19 PM)
Who is the main competition for Young right now? I know tOSU came out of nowhere to get a visit...

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:21:30 PM)
North Carolina is the biggest competition, but you're right that Ohio State kind of came out of nowhere, so it's tough to stack up where OSU stands versus the Tar Heels at the moment. I know the recruiting momentum favors the Buckeyes even with Young right now. He has been talking on his cell phone to Conley, Oden, and Cook, and also exchanging text messages with them. He loves Matta and is very much in the loop

riverwatchbucknut (Apr 27, 2005 2:21:42 PM)
How about what you know on Dante Jackson? I heard he might be playing football now and with the apparent "lack" of interest in Mayo and Walker he seems to be a good target for 2007? Also do you have any projections on where him and the other Ohioans end up ranked nationally next year?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:22:51 PM)
I also believe Jackson will be playing football, but I think he's going the basketball route in college. He's a very high target of the staff, and he favors Ohio State early on. I consider Jackson about the 5th or 6th best in the 2007 class in Ohio, but in most years, I think he would be one of the top two or three players. Jackson will be a top 100 player most likely

raven19 (Apr 27, 2005 2:23:24 PM)
As always great job. Are there any publications that list top ten women players in Ohio and what schools they are considering like they do for the men? How about national list for women and contacts for subscriptions such as blue star and asgr. Someday I hope bucknuts can cover women's recruiting in a manner similar to what does for Purdue women's basketball.

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:24:53 PM)
Keep a copy at all times of Ohio High Magazine. I know Steve Helwagen makes it a point to have a lot of girl's high school basketball information in there from time to time. I think ultimately, Bucknuts wants to continue to up the ante with women's coverage. I don't think it's far around the corner. You and many others have expressed interest, and I think they are hearing those requests and taking them to heart. Be patient and as Gary Housteau would say... *smile*

drderm (Apr 27, 2005 2:25:02 PM)
Does anyone have verification of the radio station quote and what day the quote was made on Oden, that OSU was number one from the forums, or was that a rehash from the tournament a couple weeks ago?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:25:57 PM)
I did not hear the report, and i'm not sure what station it was on. My guess is that it probably a rehash of old information, but it might not be. I have no doubts Ohio State is Oden's leader, I just think it's unlikely he would say it these last couple of weeks because I think they are going to play it close to the vest

guest (Apr 27, 2005 2:26:17 PM)
Kyle, do you ever encounter trouble from recruits, coaches, etc. when something happens on the internet like with the Cook rumors of transfering. Even though it wouldnt be your fault, do recruits tend to not talk as much?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:27:21 PM)
This most certainly does have an affect on some recruits, some coaches, etc. I have not personally encountered any trouble from these reports, but regrettably, the Cook to Oak Hill rumor did irritate those close to the situation down in Dayton.

Tico (Apr 27, 2005 2:27:27 PM)
Are there contingency plans for Oden, Conley, Lightly ect.? Are Chichester, Morgan, Dews, options?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:28:40 PM)
There are plenty of options besides those main five, including Chichester, Morgan, Bassett, Harangody, Guzman, Will Walker, and many others. The OSU staff seems to be doing a great job of not just going after five guys, but many others as well knowing they can' t put all their eggs in one basket

buckgrad (Apr 27, 2005 2:28:45 PM)
Any rumors on who we may pick up for our schedule next year? Any big names being thrown out there? Thanks

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:29:49 PM)
I've heard Maryland or Miami for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.. a return game with St. Joe's and LSU. San Francisco at home, a possible preseason tournament, and a few other major conference possibilities which haven't been finalized, so I don't want to speculate just yet

Guest (Apr 27, 2005 2:30:01 PM)
Any word on Coach Matta planning any "special" things for the dynamic duo? Perhaps something to top the "WANTED: Conley" signs that Wake had around campus. Does Matta and staff do any of those type of things for recruits?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:31:07 PM)
Most of that special treatment you speak of is not permitted by NCAA rules. I understand that much of what the students down at Wake Forest were doing, was trying to be cleaned up ahead of time by the Wake staff. Coach Matta will do everything he can on the visit, but signs and such with their names on it would probably be minor violations

Buckdub (Apr 27, 2005 2:31:21 PM)
At what point do you think OSU will start scheduling some real preseason games? it's tough to sit and watch us play some version of Tennessee - Chattanoga every game. I'd start watching Auburn football if that was my goal. Any word on an OSU/UC series?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:33:09 PM)
Right now the UC series still seems far off. I think you will see a slightly stronger schedule the next couple of years, but I don't think they will stray too far from what they are doing now. You will probably see a few more "big" programs on the schedule each year, but I think it will not radically change too awful much

Tico (Apr 27, 2005 2:33:48 PM)
What is the story with Lavendar? No OSU interest in him? Are there rumblings of OSU being in on any transfers?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:34:55 PM)
Ohio State took a pass from what I can tell, and if they didn't, this would be done by now IMHO. There was interest on Ohio State's part reportedly, but they absolutely are happy with where they stood in the Conley recruitment, and taking Lavender would probably ruin that. So it appears they passed on Lavender, and he's currently searching for a school

Buckdub (Apr 27, 2005 2:35:11 PM)
I heard cbus was getting a "region" in the tourney a few years from now. You think the Final Four would ever come here?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:36:20 PM)
The arena isn't big enough for a Final Four, as the NCAA prefers the arenas that can hold 30 or 40,000 people for its championship. Columbus does again host in 2007 for the NCAA tournament, however.

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:36:55 PM)
We are currently caught up on questions, so if you have more... now is a good time to submit them

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:37:42 PM)
I want to take this opportunity to remind everyone that this weekend in Ft. Wayne, Ind. is a great chance to see a lot of good basketball

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:37:50 PM)
In attendance at the Spiece Run N' Slam will be...

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:38:56 PM)
Mike Conley, Greg Oden, Daequan Cook, Aaron Pogue, Eric Gordon, Derrick Rose, O.J. Mayo, Bill Walker, Keenan Ellis, James Dews, Josh Chichester, Jon Diebler, Dante' Jackson, Luke Harangody, Rayshaun Goins, Yancey Gates, E'Twaun Moore, Raymar Morgan, Ricky Jackson, and many, many more

Tico (Apr 27, 2005 2:39:04 PM)
Is Jon Diebler an OSU possibility? Do you like his game more than Sylvester's?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:40:10 PM)
Diebler to OSU isn't out of the question. I just don't yet expect him to stray away from Valpo. However, if he does, Ohio State will have a shot. I love Diebler's game, and I think he's one of the top players in the 2007 class nationally. There's not much to like. I think Diebler has just as high a ceiling as Mayes, but it's too early to like him better. I do think Mayes will be a very good player this year for the Buckeyes.

riverwatchbucknut (Apr 27, 2005 2:40:14 PM)
so when do you think conley and oden will make their decision? will it be together at a press conference? And what is the latest on how we stand

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:40:54 PM)
I have not yet heard how they will announce their intentions, but I would be shocked if they don't make their decision on or shortly after their visit to OSU. The latest is that I feel Ohio State has a very good shot at landing them.

antosu (Apr 27, 2005 2:41:03 PM)
Will Sylvester Mayed be here playing in the summer league ?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:41:18 PM)
He is supposed to be here. I will try to find that out in the next two weeks for sure.

BuckeyeSal1 (Apr 27, 2005 2:41:24 PM)
If the age limit is not passed in the NBA do you feel Oden will still attend a school for a year or two?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:41:43 PM)
I really do feel Oden will go to college no matter what. However, I think the age rule is just a mere formality at this point

riverwatchbucknut (Apr 27, 2005 2:41:48 PM)
On cook is there any questions about his eligibility? There was some mention as that was why the rumors started in the first place.

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:42:51 PM)
Cook's GPA is in good shape, and there's very little chance of any problems being eligible. Ohio State looked over his transcripts last week and liked what they saw. I think they just wanted to make sure he picked up a credit or two here and there for next academic year just to make sure he doesn't miss out on any of those entrance credits necessary for college, but he's in good academic standing

Tico (Apr 27, 2005 2:42:59 PM)
Kyle, How do you rank the Ohio 2007 bigs? Pogue, Lauderdale ect.?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:44:12 PM)
Lauderdale is at the top of the list with Ellis and Pogue behind him in that order. They all three have the chance to be big time, but Lauderdale is the most well-rounded. Pogue is more of a four right now who could use the improved ball handling and jumper. He, like Sean May, would probably be a four playing five (similar to Terence Dials).

OPbuck (Apr 27, 2005 2:44:16 PM)
After Dials leaves, who fills that huge void?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:44:54 PM)
If Greg Oden attends Ohio State, there will be no void whatsoever. With all due respect to Dials who I believe is the best big man in the Big Ten, Ohio State would actually be improving with Oden the minute he stepped on campus

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:45:11 PM)
Without Oden, it's up to Matt Terwilliger to step up and play like the staff believes he still can

riverwatchbucknut (Apr 27, 2005 2:45:21 PM)
I do not hear Ellis talked about that much with regards to OSU. How do you think we stand with him? And is he someone you think Matta will go after hard

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:46:09 PM)
Ellis is a guy that the staff would love, i'm sure, but I think Lauderdale is their first priority, and if they are doing as well as I believe, they might not need to worry about Ellis

antosu (Apr 27, 2005 2:46:22 PM)
Kyle, ant games for Cook in Ohio next season that we can team up and go see ? vs Lighty, Mayo or anyone interesting ?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:47:24 PM)
Dunbar has a game against Lighty's team (Vila-Angela/St. Joseph) next year, but I have to check on the location. I do know the game against Lawrence North is in Indianapolis, and could even be a televised game... the date is December 8th. There's still a game against NCH in the works

drderm (Apr 27, 2005 2:47:32 PM)
Has the staff started in on Dews more. He has gotten some press lately that seems to dispell some of the perceived shortcomings and Matta has stated that he flat out likes shooters.

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:48:11 PM)
Last I heard, there still wasn't much attention on Dews from OSU. I think he's a good fit, but Dews would have a tough time seeing the floor with the guys in front of him, especially if they get Lighty to join Cook.

nuts4bucs (Apr 27, 2005 2:48:30 PM)
If the NBA age limit is imposed does OSU have a serious shot of getting Mayo?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:49:47 PM)
Even with the help of a new age limit, i'm not sure anyone has a truly "serious" shot at Mayo. Keep in mind, even with the new rule, he would only be in college for a year, and I would not be surprised given what shoe companies would offer if he took a year off or played somewhere else. If he does go to college, I would guess Ohio State has a shot, but there's just not anyone recruiting Mayo right now, so it's tough to really predict

antosu (Apr 27, 2005 2:49:56 PM)
But cook will be at oakhill right ?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:50:18 PM)
No. As I reported after the story broke, that was an inaccurate report

Tico (Apr 27, 2005 2:50:27 PM)
I do not see UC on many of the top Ohio kids lists. Is there a reason for this or is Huggins trying to get in on these kids?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:50:57 PM)
Huggins has recruited many of these same guys (Cook, Morgan, Chichester, etc), but he's just not having much luck with them.

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:51:53 PM)
Any other pressing questions?

Buckdub (Apr 27, 2005 2:52:46 PM)
where do you put osu's chances at a big 10 title next year?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:54:25 PM)
That's really tough to say right now. I think Ohio State could easily be a contender for the title. Right now I still want to see who steps up at the PF position, and I want to see how Butler comes out with a year of experience. With those two things, and Lewis and Mayes being as good as I hear, Ohio State will have a very successful team, and could challenge any number of teams including Illinois, Michigan State, Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin or Michigan for the championship

riverwatchbucknut (Apr 27, 2005 2:54:30 PM)
care to put a percentage on the oden/conley package

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:55:11 PM)
A lot better chance of Ohio State getting them than not getting them in my honest opinion.

antosu (Apr 27, 2005 2:55:33 PM)
Any word on where Mayes will play most of his minutes , PG or SG ?And has Butler been spotted working on his handles or left hand at all ? If he improves there, we have a very solid pg in Butler.

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:56:17 PM)
Mayes is coming in as a two-guard. He will probably not see many minutes at PG, as Ronald Lewis could back up Butler. I had heard that they have some drills set up for Butler all off-season to improve his dribbling.

riverwatchbucknut (Apr 27, 2005 2:56:31 PM)
If we get the THAD 5 how many do you see starting as freshman

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:57:23 PM)
Oden and Young would probably start for sure, and Cook, Lighty and Conley would all see very good minutes if not start in their first year

Buckdub (Apr 27, 2005 2:57:28 PM)
you think anyone will look to transfer if we get all 5? some multi-year starters would stand to lose their starting spots.

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:57:56 PM)
I wouldn't really see anyone transferring. As far as sheer numbers, even with all five there would only be 10 or 11 players on scholarship

antosu (Apr 27, 2005 2:58:12 PM)
Your opinion on who starts at the 4 this year...Sylk or Harris ?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:58:38 PM)
Right now I have to believe Sylvester has the inside track based on how he finished the season. However, I still like Harris' ceiling if the light finally comes on

vero (Apr 27, 2005 2:58:51 PM)
Joining late, is Drew still a possibility

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 2:59:38 PM)
No. I believe the ship sailed on Lavender, i'm sure it's because the ship docked right in Conley's port

antosu (Apr 27, 2005 2:59:48 PM)
Is Drew a big defensive liability ?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 3:00:12 PM)
From what i've watched of him on television and what i've been told by others, I would say yes

bgsubuckeye (Apr 27, 2005 3:00:25 PM)
What are Ohio State's chances with Young?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 3:00:51 PM)
Still a tough read, but certainly they are getting better by the day and are far better than I would have guessed when his name popped up

drderm (Apr 27, 2005 3:01:44 PM)
Who is the recruiter at Purdue now? I would not think currently OSU would have to fight for any recruit against them due to their switch, is Painter talented at recruiting and does he run an upscale offense like the kids like

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 3:02:13 PM)
Painter seems to be taking the lead in recruiting for now. I think he's wanting to make up some ground and over time, he may let his assistants take more of a role. Painter seems to be doing a great job

bgsubuckeye (Apr 27, 2005 3:02:25 PM)
Do you think Matta looks at the Ohio State job as a long term position, or a stepping stone to a better program?

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 3:03:22 PM)
I think Matta believes this program can go as far as it wants to. That's evidenced by a possible dream recruiting class. If there were any doubts in his mind, they are probably gone now. He knows he can accomplish anything at OSU, and I would have to believe he wouldn't mind staying here a long, long time

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 3:04:02 PM)
I have time for two or three more questions

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 3:05:27 PM)
Any questions?

vero (Apr 27, 2005 3:05:57 PM)
whos better Conley or Drew

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 3:06:42 PM)
any time you have a former McDonald's AA like Lavender who has started for two years at a school like Oklahoma, certainly he has to be given the edge over a HS junior... but that being said... Conley has a much brighter future

bgsubuckeye (Apr 27, 2005 3:06:57 PM)
On a basketball recruiting trip, where do they take the recruits, what is the best time of year to visit, who is the personel that is around them

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 3:08:06 PM)
I think ideally, you want to always get a recruit on campus to see the atmosphere at a live game if you can. Beyond that, I don't know that there's any one place or another. As far as a trip goes... it varies from coach to coach. Some prefer entertainment, some prefer recruiting hanging out with the coaches and players and develop a closeness, some just want to get every little detail of the campus shown to the recruit. There's no magic formula

vero (Apr 27, 2005 3:08:36 PM)
Will Oden come to Ohio State

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 3:09:16 PM)
That's the million dollar question. WIth only a couple of weeks remaining in this process, you couldn't ask the Ohio State staff to be in any better a position. I'll leave it at that.

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 3:09:25 PM)
That's all the time I have for today

Kyle S. Lamb (Apr 27, 2005 3:09:49 PM)
thanks, everyone for coming by. Remember Spiece this weekend... Ft. Wayne, Friday through Sunday. Go over if you can. It's some good basketball and I'll be there!

drderm (Apr 27, 2005 3:10:01 PM)
thanks kyle!

Buckdub (Apr 27, 2005 3:10:03 PM)
Thanks Kyle, great info

ToMac (Apr 27, 2005 3:10:04 PM)
Thanks Kyle. Great job.
