have you heard anything on our old friend Fred Davis?
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:13:37 PM)
No, I assume he went through spring ball with the Trojans. The rules are he has to finish the full year at USC before pursuing a transfer. We'll see. But I have heard nothing to indicate he's transferring to OSU this summer, if that's what you're asking.
mulder (Apr 29, 2005 12:14:37 PM)
What role do you think Tim Beckman will play? I think he may function as a sort of pass defense coordinator in addition to his cornerbacks role. Also, do you know anything about him as a recruiter?
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:15:26 PM)
I know nothing about him. Will meet him today at 2 p.m. That is the assumption that he is being brought here to assist OSU in stopping the spread. If that's the case, they really are thinking outside the box and I commend them.
marksgforce (Apr 29, 2005 12:15:36 PM)
Seems like our 1-2 punch at WR is Holmes and Ginn. Who emerges as solid #3? Is it Gonzo? Is Hall back in the picture? Has Dukes passed all three? Does Devon Lyons take it to the next level?
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:16:38 PM)
Gonzalez is No. 3. Hall had a good spring until he got hurt. He and Lyons would fit the big receiver mold and Dukes would be another smaller receiver. Dukes has star written all over him. He's even fumbling like a young Santonio did (ha ha). That's when you know, I guess.
diehardbucfan2004 (Apr 29, 2005 12:16:43 PM)
I know they recently posted that Huston recieved his 6th year of eligibility. But, have you heard anything on Turano?
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:17:03 PM)
No, and they didn't think they had a realistic shot with him, so that's why he didn't practice.
marksgforce (Apr 29, 2005 12:17:09 PM)
I heard for the first time in rumor format that the staff would like to redshirt Maurice Wells. Have you heard anything to that effect? Is it even possible with depth issues? Maybe Schnittker at TB allows this to happen?
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:17:55 PM)
Possibly. They just want more options I assume. Pittman and Haw looked solid to me and Schnittker should be able to get positive yards against a lot of the teams they'll play.
skeelo (Apr 29, 2005 12:18:40 PM)
steve what impresses you the most about thad matta?
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:21:14 PM)
His energy and ability to get people to follow him, whether it's his players during the season or this incredible run he is on with recruiting. Stop and think about this. He has Lighty and Cook and is as close as he can be with Oden and Conley. Then, they could also get Morgan or Young. Then, you move down to the current sophs and grab Lauderdale, Dante Jackson and maybe Diebler or somebody from NCH. Then, you go down to the freshman class and get Mullens, Gates, Goins and McBride. It's all set. He just needs to mine it.
marksgforce (Apr 29, 2005 12:21:22 PM)
Any changes with the BIG four? Is Brown drifting away? Has Tilley been offered? Which of the BIG four do we get in the end? Brown? Tilley? Smith? Boren?
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:22:54 PM)
No changes that I know of. Brown and Smith were at the game. Boren had been there for practice. I understand they are looking in on Tilley as well at Springfield South. My guess is they get Smith and Boren most likely with a 50 percent shot, maybe better, with Brown. Then they'll have to decide if they want Tilley or anybody else. If they offer Tilley, they probly have a 50 percent shot there, too.
LABuck (Apr 29, 2005 12:23:03 PM)
does the depth of the receiving corps give Coach T the opportunity to use Teddy Ginn at corner this year or do you think that he is just too explosive and valuable to use him that much on D. If so, how many plays on D a game? 5 to 10?
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:23:57 PM)
Starting out, it will be just a handful of plays. But Teddy is built for durability. By the end of the year he could be doing much more of both. I was surprised he played much defense on Sat., but he was out there.
diehardbucfan2004 (Apr 29, 2005 12:24:03 PM)
They oughta let Dionte carry the ball some too. He is definitely a battering ram when he is blocking.
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:24:19 PM)
I'm sure he'll get a carry or 2 here and there.
skeelo (Apr 29, 2005 12:24:22 PM)
has heacock hinted using a base 3-4 defense to help bring pressure off the edge?
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:24:41 PM)
No, in some circumstances they may show that look, but it's a 4-3 team.
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:25:12 PM)
I think the ends with Gholston, Richardson and Patterson showed well. Add Kudla, Worthington, Barrow and Wilson and I think you're better than just OK there.
diehardbucfan2004 (Apr 29, 2005 12:25:17 PM)
So, which Buckeyes do you think made a case for themselves to get more playing time?
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:26:40 PM)
Hoobler, Freeman, no doubt. They'd play now almost anywhere else. Richardson came to play Sat., too. Steve Winner did a nice job on the OL. Same with Cordle. I think he might like to RS, but I think he plays at least a little. He seems to be the next center after Mangold leaves. Dukes is a comer. You'll just have to live with the fumbles until he nails that down.
rbuck (Apr 29, 2005 12:26:45 PM)
Hi Steve, Is that indeed a fact that Lighty committed?
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:27:37 PM)
ScoutHoops.com had 2 sources -- including his AAU coach Hewitt -- confirming it, so they went with it. My preference would have been for David to announce it on his terms Monday. But for reasons unclear to me, I do not control the world.
rbuck (Apr 29, 2005 12:27:48 PM)
What happens when Mike Davis gets fired next year and they come after Thad? Surely he wouldn't leave with what he's building here??
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:30:17 PM)
Surely he would not. As I outlined earlier, they have the talent in the pipeline -- almost all of it from Ohio except for Oden, Conley and maybe Young -- to be real good through, say, 2011 or 2012. We are caught up in what's happening now with the Fab 4 or whatever here. But I want to tell you that current freshman crop of Mullens, Gates, McBride, Moore and Goins is incredibly impressive. They are 5 of Ohio's best 7 in that class. They play together on an AAU team and sometimes they play up (against older teams) and they more than hold their own. That could be the group, even if they don't have a No. 1 national guy like Oden.
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:30:53 PM)
Don't assume they will be firing Davis, either. The guy has 9 lives. They wanted him out and he screwed up and went to the national title game 3 years ago.
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:31:25 PM)
I think that is Alford's job anyway if he wants it. He improved his stock by getting Iowa (however briefly) back into the NCAA this year.
mulder (Apr 29, 2005 12:31:30 PM)
How do you see the TE position being manned this year and what role will it play? Will we finally get to see Marcel Frost show his talents?
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:31:34 PM)
By committee ...
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:36:23 PM)
Hamby gets the first call. Coleman and Nicol will help in 2 TE short yardage sets. Nicol is an all-around TE, actually. Frost has the highest ceiling and could make the most plays. Great athlete and he's added some bulk.
I got booted from the Chat and lost several of the questions, but I recall several of them. Here we go.
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:36:29 PM)
On Hoobler ...
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:37:39 PM)
He is just making so many plays at such a young stage in his career, you want to say Spielman or Katzenmoyer, but that's not fair. He is really coming through big-time. I'm sure they are regretting the fact he did not redshirt last year. He'll only be a backup this year, then start for 2 years, I imagine.
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:37:46 PM)
On the 12th game ...
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:38:34 PM)
I did hear that. It starts in 2006. My guess is they will find a mid-major from the MWC, WAC or C-USA to come in Oct. 7 in that open date to get their 12th game. It will not be a major BCS school with a trip to Texas already on the docket.
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:38:44 PM)
On the new coach ...
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:39:28 PM)
I will be interested to hear where they are sending each of the assistants. Tucker had Cleveland and that will be critical to lock that back down again. Hopefully, somebody will be there today to discuss the assignments. They're on the road now.
PigMan36 (Apr 29, 2005 12:39:38 PM)
Sorry if this has been covered already, but coming out of spring practice, what's the word on Sims moving to guard and Rehring starting at left tackle?
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:40:19 PM)
They experimented with that. I don't think that's what we'll see on an every down situation. My guess is that Sims splits time between tackle and guard and that allows them to get Rehring and/or Boone or whoever on the field.
PigMan36 (Apr 29, 2005 12:40:28 PM)
Frost actually looked a little heavy to me. Is this the playing weight we can expect this fall?
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:40:55 PM)
I agree, maybe a tad thick. I'm sure they will be regulating his weight this summer and making sure he comes in where they want him to be.
marksgforce (Apr 29, 2005 12:41:08 PM)
I've assumed and argued (dangerous combination) that there is NO quarterback controversy with the coaches and the team. Barring anything major like injury or 12 td passes against Miami, Troy is the OSU qb. Is that a reasonable assumption? Is the only controversy among fans?
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:42:22 PM)
That is my take as well. Coach Daniels didn't come out and say Troy would start against Texas, but he sounded like, in their minds, he is still No. 1. He just can't play the first game. Zwick did not help himself at all with that 11 of 27 performance on Sat. I can assure you of that.
diehardbucfan2004 (Apr 29, 2005 12:42:32 PM)
I also mentionen scUM changing there base defense from a 3-4 to a 4-3. What is your thought on that?
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:43:33 PM)
They need to do something. Their D-line play last year, particularly against Ohio State and Texas, was absolutely atrocious. I watched them play several games earlier in the year and noted they did not have play makers up front, just pluggers like Massey, etc. OSU and Texas abused them because of it.
ronfel (Apr 29, 2005 12:43:48 PM)
Will a post spring practice depth chart be released?
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:44:53 PM)
I posted one on the board Saturday, taking what was in the spring program and combining it with what we were shown at the player draft on Wed. to give you the best guess of what it would be. I will tack that thread back up if I can find it. OSU did not really release a post spring depth chart, per se.
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:45:21 PM)
They had one in their program but it was kind of outdated. I'm sure that's the one that will show up in all the mags (except ours).
PigMan36 (Apr 29, 2005 12:45:25 PM)
What did the coaches think of Cordle? Do they think he'll be a capable back up to Mangold or are they leaning toward redshirting him and letting Datish handle that role?
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:45:54 PM)
Love him and they want to groom him for next year by getting him some time this year. Could also be doing some long snapping maybe as well.
mulder (Apr 29, 2005 12:46:04 PM)
Steve, the Scout recruiting database is always woefully out of date. Is there any chance that Bucknuts could maintian its own database for the OSU recruits? I actually think there are several databases that you could easily maintain that would be very helpful.
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:46:52 PM)
No, we'll use theirs. We don't have time and energy to spend starting up our own. But we have power to make changes. We intend to be more proactive about that. If you see a glaring mistake, EZINbox me and we'll get it fixed.
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:47:55 PM)
Surprisingly, I thought it was getting better a week or 2 ago. But I know there will always be holes. That's a hard thing to maintain because things change so quickly in that business. It's just a snapshot of how things appear to be. Remember, we get no assistance from schools with their "offer lists" so it's all done off player interviews, etc.
rbuck (Apr 29, 2005 12:48:01 PM)
Is the Buckeye Grove going to be posted soon?
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:49:06 PM)
I am working on it. Probably by Monday would be my guess. I'd like it to be a weekly thing. Some weeks I get sidetracked with site issues or magazine stories I have to write. There are only so many hours in the day. I have some good stuff planned for that for the next several editions. It's just sitting down and banging it out that's the issue.
PigMan36 (Apr 29, 2005 12:49:23 PM)
Troy worried me during the spring game. My biggest problem with running QB's is that they tend to look for reasons to run rather than run out of need. They tend to step backwards rather than up into the pocket. I saw Troy taking a lot of steps backward last week, which is something he didn't do against scUM. Do you think he was trying too hard to showcase his running ability?
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:51:38 PM)
He did have 40-some positive yards rushing, balanced against the 14-yard loss on the fumble caused by Richardson. I love it that he's able to run. The DBs and LBs get caught looking at him, and he's able to throw it over their heads. It's April. Duane made the comment, I believe, that this was the pre-Purdue Troy Smith and I'd agree. He is not in sync and shouldn't be because it's April. Plus, the conditions could only have been worse if there was 6 inches of snow on the ground. Please remember that, for those who watched from the comfort of their climate controlled homes (ha ha). It was a MISERABLE day out there.
PigMan36 (Apr 29, 2005 12:52:08 PM)
If Lightey does come to OSU, any chance on him moonlighing on the football field? I know he didn't play at all last year (at least I don't think he did), but he was considered one of the top WR's in the country before he dropped out of football.
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:53:07 PM)
No, I don't see that. Maybe down the line if his priorities or goals change and he sees a better pro potential in football (a la Rickey Dudley). But I think basketball and basketball alone is his sport. Remember, he just blew out his ACL, so I don't think contact sports will be real high on his list of things to do.
LABuck (Apr 29, 2005 12:53:17 PM)
My friend and I were discussing the top 5 LBs at OSU. Going back to M. Marek & G. Cobb to Pepper, Tovar, Speilman & Kumerow, Katz, Wilhelm, (I know I'm leaving out some), to Hawk and Carpenter. Who are your top five in order if you can? We've had alot of talent there over the years!
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:53:43 PM)
My top 5 in order. Oh, wow. Spielman remains the gold standard. After that ...
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:56:23 PM)
you've hit many of them. You left out Randy Gradishar, one of the all-time greats. Tom Cousineau was the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. There are too many to say. My list, darn this is hard, would be Spielman, Marek, Cousineau, Katz and Pepper.
PigMan36 (Apr 29, 2005 12:56:37 PM)
When can we expect another verbal commitment and who is it going to be?
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:58:15 PM)
It could be an offer-and-verbal-on-the-spot situation if they see a kid during May evaluations that lights them up and desperately wants to be a Buckeye. They had several of those type kids at the game Sat. like Ryan Palmer, D.J. Burris, Bill Nagy, 2 kids from Clyde, FB Xylon Purkiss from Ravenna, DB Carl Finkes from Xenia, OL-TE Jake Ballard from Springboro and so on.
rbuck (Apr 29, 2005 12:58:20 PM)
What are the chances of Oden and Conley Committing next weeekend?
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 12:58:58 PM)
Pretty good, it seems. They may silently verbal, then announce back home after the visit. Or maybe they'll wait. But everything seems to be pointing toward them ending it very soon.
PigMan36 (Apr 29, 2005 12:59:13 PM)
Have you personally spoken with Boren? I keep hearing mixed signals from him.
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 1:00:28 PM)
No, I believe Gary did a huge feature on him. Michigan has made him a top priority, so they're pulling out all the stops. My feeling is the kid is an Ohio kid. He's lived here his whole life. I got the sense early that he felt at home at OSU. But Michigan is working hard to change that. No big biggie. Let the process play out and he'll go where he wants to go.
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 1:01:29 PM)
Sorry for the glitches today. I may have the wrong version of the software on this computer. My hard drive crapped out last week, teaching me the very valuable lesson to always back my stuff up. We will wind down with 1-2 more before I have to get to the Tim Beckman intro at 2.
LABuck (Apr 29, 2005 1:01:32 PM)
What happens in the recruiting process of an athlete that says he absolutely wants to play both football and basketball. Would Coach Matta and Coach Tress actually discuss if they are both intereted in this kid so they don't waste time recruiting someone.
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 1:03:53 PM)
You'd know I got booted right there ... regarding the two-sport question ...
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 1:04:23 PM)
Yes, the coaches would confer and make a decision, I'm sure. Two-sport kids have to count on football, so it would ultimately be Tressel's call.
redondo (Apr 29, 2005 1:06:46 PM)
Hi Steve - regarding adding the 12th football game, what cascade effects could be forthcoming? Will the D1 coaches push for an increase in schollies from 85? Will there be a push for another conference game? Any others?
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 1:08:36 PM)
Doubt they are getting more scholarships. This will help them balance their books. Tressel does not want 9 Big Ten games because of 4/5 scheduling (somebody would get 5 road games). If they went to 10 and everybody played everybody, nobody would make it through unbeaten, either, so that isn't good. This just makes sense. It made no sense for some schools to play preseason games and others not and for there to be 11 some years and 12 in others. Just make it 12 and go with it.
SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 1:08:53 PM)

SteveHelwagen (Apr 29, 2005 1:10:37 PM)
Usually either Thursday or Friday. I work around Gary Housteau's work schedule and he picks the day that's best for him, then I go opposite. I'm usually at noon or 1 p.m. I will not be around next week, though. He should be here then. We try and post notices a day out on the Ask The Insiders board, then the instructions 2-3 hours beforehand on the front page.
