College coaches are always on the lookout for big, versatile athletes these days. Springboro (Oh.) standout Jacob Ballard is just that.
Standing in at 6-7, 255, Ballard has a best of 4.8 in the 40 and plays both tight end and defensive end but could project as an offensive lineman in college. Some colleges are recruiting Ballard as a tight end, while others like him for the offensive line. Ballard prefers tight end, but he still seems open to a position change in college.
"I'm not going to eliminate any school because they want me as an offensive lineman," Ballard said.
Ballard currently ranks as one of Ohio's top 20 overall prospects. He has offers from Northwestern, Michigan State, Boston College, Indiana, Duke, Louisville, Cincinnati, Miami (Oh.), Bowling Green, and Toledo.
In the past, he has played multiple sports and used to be a force in basketball, but he has decided to focus on football. He is not playing a spring sport and is undergoing speed training.
"Until last year, I wasn't sure what I wanted to play in college," he said. "But now I'm going to be a football player."
Ballard plans to attend a one-day camp on May 7 at Michigan and also plans on camping at Ohio State, Iowa, Michigan State, and Louisville this summer.
"I may go to some other camps, but those are the ones for sure," Ballard said.
Ballard has been up to Ohio State more than once as he was a visitor for games last year and traveled to OSU during spring ball.
"It went pretty good," Ballard said. "I talked to Coach Heacock, Coach Peterson and Coach Bollman.
"Other schools I've been to are Michigan State, Louisville and Indiana."
When does Ballard hope to make a decision?
"I may take some visits, but I want to be committed before the season starts," he said.
Ballard's bench press is up to 285, and he squats 365 and deadlifts 565. He will take his test in June.
