New Post Could we be better next year?
We have a window of opportunity over the next two years to win a national championship. This year we will have 0-2 losses. But then think how stacked we will be the following year. You can argue we will be better. Hawk, Carp, won't hurt too bad cause Hoobler Freeman and if D'Andrea gets a redshirt we will be solid. On offense Cordle, Boone will upgrade as will Chris Wells. And all around we will be very deep and experienced. Lets assume Holmes and Youboty leave. We can still be alright but Pitcock would hurt. We need to recruit a stud DT

WR-Gonzo

Ginn
LT-Boone
LG-Downing
C-Cordle
RG-Datish
RT-Barton
QB-Smith
RB-Chris Wells

DE-Kudla
LB-Hoobler
LB-D'Andrea

I think both Everett and Kudla will be gone after 05 season.

It will be a rebuilding year, sort of. But a rebuilding year at Ohio State should be a 10-3 season at worst.

We could be very good no doubt. Our offense that year might be something to behold. It certainly has more potential than many other years.

However, dont assume that Cordle and Wells will step in and be ready to play right off the bat. I dont doubt their ability, but the fact is that most freshmen dont contribute very big their first year. Its pretty rare to find a Peterson or Ginn do big things as a freshmen.

I think in 2006 our defensive line will be strong. I have a feeling Worthington and Wilson will be starting in 06. Worthington may end up as a tackle because of his size. You can never tell.

Our defensive backfield should still have Youboty. I dont think Santonio will stay for his Senior season, but I have a feeling youboty will. Especially without seeing the playing field for more than half a year yet.

I also have a little prediction. If C.Wells comes in and contributes the way we all hope he can, Tressel wont hesitate to go back to the more conservative 2002 type offense. Where does this leave Ginn? I have a strong feeling he will be moved out to Split End. Can you imagine Teddy as a deep stretch the field threat? He would be unstoppable. I dont think there is a single cornerback who could match his speed downfield.

You are saying we have a two year window but honestly with Coach T here now I really dont think there will be many if at all years that we dont have the potential to go to the National Championship.

I think offensively we will be more explosive than any OSU team I have ever seen. Smith will be back, we will have a great OL, our backs will have another year of experience and Beanie Wells added to the mix and our receivers will be awesome.

Defensively, I think we will be great on the line and good in the backfield if we can keep Youboty another year and find a replacement for Salley. I will be concerned about our lack of experience at LB. If Freeman and Hoobler get to play a lot this year and D'andrea gets a sixth year then I think we will be fine.

Overall, we should be close to the team we put on the field this year.

Next year won't be rebuilding. We will lose two great LB (carpenter and Hawk), a solid DE (Kudla), and two experienced DBs (Salley and Everett). I think Youboty will stay. He's a very smart kid and seems very mature. Pitcock hopefully stays as well. If both of those guys go, it will be a major blow. With just the seniors leaving our only question mark will be at LB. Freeman and Hoobler are studs, imo, they just lack experience. If D'Andrea is back, watch out. On O, we will lose only Santonio, Sims, Mangold, and Hamby. With as many young WRs as we have we should still be very good at WR. Sims will hurt a bit, but Boone may be better as a Sophomore than Sims will be as a Sr. I think we will challenge for the NC. At Texas and at Iowa are the major tests along with at home vs. tsun. We lost 14 starters to the NFL after 03, based on the players above we will lose between 6 and 9, imo. Very much apples and oranges. Plus, any time you are starting over at QB, that's huge. We won't be next year.

New Post Re: Could we be better next year?
2005 vs. 2006 position by position

Qb- better, more experienced
RB- better, more experienced
FB-I think Johnson is the answer at FB for years to come, so should be better at starter, maybe a little thin for depth.
OL- Worse, at least early, with the loss of Mangold and Simms. If we get a lot of guys involved this year we could be as good or better, especially if what people say about Cordle is correct.
WR- Worse. Ginn and Gonzolez help, but IMO Holmes is long gone. We won't be in bad shape, but should be better this year overall.
TE- Worse. We lose Hamby, and right now we're pretty thin at TE IMO. If Frost or Nicols steps up in a big way.

DT-Draw- Green graduates, but Pitcock is the star and will be back. We're so deep here I'm not worried, especially if Patterson ever shows up like his talent would allow. Draw or better in 2006
DE- Undecided-Kudla is gone. Richardson is back, but has never played up to his ability. We'll have to wait on Barrows, Gholston, and the true freshman to really see.
OLB- Worse- no way you lose Hawk and Carpenter and get better. Big step down, no matter how good Freeman and company are
MLB- Draw or better if D'andrea gets another year. If not, we'll see a bit of a step down early. Hoobler may be the future here and if he plays quite a bit this year could really ease the transition.
CB- Worse. IMO Youboty goes to the next level, and Everett gradautes. This is the real weakness I see in 2006. We're thin at CB and I haven't see any young guys stepping it up. O'neal staying at CB and taking boundary will help, but where do we find a field corner? Brandon Underwood is probably a boundary corner too IMO. I really could see playing Ginn both ways in 2006.
S- Draw- OSU has some immensely talented safeties IMO. I think Salley has finally turned the corner and will be great this year. I just think Patterson could step in and be just as good. Mitchell has quite a bit of experience also. Whitner will be back manning one spot and hopefully continues to grow as a player.

P- Better- we're breaking in a new guy this year, whoever ends up with the job. Again, assuming experience helps, we should be better in 2006
K- Draw- For the 2nd time in 2 years we'll be breaking in a new kicker. Unlike Houston, whoever steps in next year will be far younger, but for Houston's age he doesn't have much experience. Nugent saw to that.

I'm making a huge chance saying that experience obviously makes a player better, but I'm not sure how else to see this. Injuries and how the true/redshirt freshmen and inexperienced players develop will tell a lot, but that's how I see things.

New Post Re: Could we be better next year?
The thing about the 2006 season is the schedule. We'll see scum,PSU at home, we'll be at Iowa and at TExas but we'll also have Northen Ill,Cincy and YSU? at home. Thus I see the schedule helping next year.

On D the big fall offs I see will be the LB's but I think Terry,Hoobler and Freeman aren't bad guys to have step in. If anything Hoobler may be a step up at MLB, he seems to have Hawk like senses at the MLB position. I also can see an O'Neal stepping in at Salleys spot and not much of a drop off as I don't think O'Neal but an Amos , Jenkins or Ginn we'll work out the CB problem. I don't see any other problems for the D. Don't expect to see the preseason mags say this because you will hear nothing but the loss of Hawk and Carp being all doom and gloom. :rolleyes

On O I think the fact that we'll have a true 2 deep O-line will make the loss of Sims and Mangold minimal, I think we have the horses to be good. At WR I think we will still have Ginn, Gonzalez,Lyons,Robiskie, to not miss a step and the TE position should be solid with Frost and Nicol. Add A CW to the RB position who I think will be an instant star since he will be starting in the winter and the Buckeyes look loaded for bear.

I see another year of struggling on offense. The scUM game was an anomaly and peformances like that this year with be the exception, rather than the rule. I hope not though.

I can see Pitcock going early if he has the monster year I think he will have. I think having a senior QB and hopefully finally getting past the QB controversy talk as a big plus, no matter who it is in the end. After the first game this year I think we could see it become a bit of a distraction. We didn't really settle down last year until we knew going into the game who was going to play and be the guy. Offensively I see a contender. Too many question marks in the kicking game and on the defensive side of the ball though. Kickers, CBs and DEs are a concern going into this year, and that won't seem to change going into next year along with questions with the LBs who simply won't be as good. A lot of things need to happen. Hopefully there are some answers that begin to emerge this year.

New Post Re: Could we be better next year?
We could very well be better in 06' however you can't really measure the intangible factor that all the great teams have. The position that stands to have the biggest turnover is obviously the LB corp, which will leave some ridiculously big shoes to fill. With that being said, there is definitely some good young talent in that position group.

-The QB play should be as good or better in 06'

-The RB corp will be one year more advanced in terms of experience and adding a thoroughbred in Chris Wells

-The WR corp could potentially lose Santonio, however I think Devon Lyons will become a star, and adding him to the list of Teddy, Gonzo, Roy Hall, and Albert Dukes makes for an ultra-talented receiving corp

-The OL will lose Sims and Mangold. Those 2 have played a ton of football in their careers and replacing their leadership and experience will be crucial. The talent is definitely there though. When you can unveil an Alex Boone, Jim Cordle, Kyle Mitchum, and potentially a Connor Smith you are definitely not struggling for talented road graders. Experience is the key, but I fully expect that 06' line corp to be as talented physically as any we have seen in recent memory

-The DL loses Mike Kudla and Marcus Green, and Quinn Pitcock could potentially depart. Sian Cotton needs to have a really nice year development-wise this season. Lawrence Wilson will be a star at one DE. Jay Richardson should be a force as a 5th year Senior. David Patterson is a wild-card as he has all-conference potential. Doug Worthington could be the best of the lot. If Pitcock sticks around look out.

-Marcus Freeman will be a star plain and simple. Chad Hoobler is a player. I am not as sold on Curtis Terry as others, however there is no question the talent and ability is there. Maybe Curt Lukens gets another look at a Will backer. John Kerr is a wildcard as a walk-on in his last season. D'Andrea is an X-factor depending on what he decides to do this season. Spitler and Laurinitis could be factors. This is the position that loses the most talent and will bear watching. I would feel a lot more comfortable if Freddie Lenix was all squared away, as I thought he was one of the more underrated players in the land last year.

Whitner and Youboty could be the best players at their respective positions if they both stick around for their senior seasons. JaMario will play himself into the mix at either FS or a corner. I thinjk Malcolm Jenkins is a sleeper, as well as Nick Patterson. Sirjo Welch just makes plays. Shaun Lane and Anderson Russell are also very promising. If Teddy plays both ways full-time as a junior forgettaboudit. Nate Salley and Tyler Everett have also played a ton of football so replacing that experience will be tough, but I feel the raw talent may be better with some of those other guys.

Talent abounds virtually everywhere on that 06' ballclub but you can't measure the worth of players like Hawk, Carpenter, Schlegel, Sims, and Mangold in terms of leadership and chemistry. If solid leaders emerge, the 06' team could be every bit as good as the 05' team.

I don't see Pitcock leaving early just because the DT class is deeper this year than its been in years not to mention players like Ngata from Oregon are going to go early. Texas actually has 2 possible first rounders at DT scary huh?

dragonknight, I like your breakdown, but I actually disagree on OL and TE. I think we'll be better next year at both. Mangold, to me, disappointed last year. Now, if he has an All-America year this year I guess we'll have a letdown in 06. I see Cordle as nearly as good. I also see Sims playing out of position. Boone and Rehring are more true tackles. I don't see this as a big loss. The other guys on the line (Barton, Downing, Mitchum, Person, etc.) will just be a year better. At TE, imo, losing Hamby is not a big deal. Frost is the real player here already. Hamby is solid and servicable. Frost is potentially an impact player. Nicol is also an on the rise type player. I also hope you are wrong about Youboty. He and Pitcock staying are probably the key to that 06 team. Another DE stepping us is also a necessity (that's true of this year as well).
