Chat Transcript - Gary Housteau

Gary Housteau stopped by Bucknuts Club chat today to talk some Buckeye football and football recruiting. Check out the transcript below.

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 1:09:31 PM)
Hello everyone...I'm here now, sorry for the delay. I'll take any questions that I can handle. So bring them on!

JimC (May 6, 2005 1:12:04 PM)
Who is the new commit. Is he a football player or a wrester?

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 1:12:04 PM)
Hi JimC...without any advanced knowledge of the situation...I'm guessing he'll be brought in as a wrestler and have a chance to come out for the football team. If that is the case, I believe he would have to participate in that sport first before he can go out for another sport as well. So maybe it's like a creative gray shirt situation for JT and the football Buckeyes. Again I don't the situation intimately to be able to tell you that but that would be a great scenario for all involved. Steve would now the rules of course. Again, just a guess on my part.

BuckeyeDave (May 6, 2005 1:13:00 PM)
Sorry if this has already been asked...Whats the scoop on James Aston? Whats the reasoning behind the offer?

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 1:13:00 PM)
Hi BuckeyeDave...please refer to the first question. At this time I have no first-hand knowledge of the situation to make an intelligent comment. Just a guess. See above. Smile!

browndawgsteve (May 6, 2005 1:18:28 PM)
Hello Gary. Ohio seems to be loaded with talent this year. However, their appears to be no major DTs. Do you know of any in your neck of the woods that is worthy or a buckeye offer or have you heard any names floating around. Also, with our depth how many do you see us taking. Besides Lyons, what wrs do you see OSU offering.

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 1:18:28 PM)
Hi browndawgsteve...If you've watched the video carefully I think Rob Rose is an outstanding DT prospect. I've seen him play in person and on video and he's destructive on the inside and he has the size and agility to do well in there. He wants to play on the outside however but let's bring him in and worry about a position later. He's one guy from up here. I think Tony Reed from Warren G. Harding could be another guy. I'm sure Michigan will look at him just because. But he needs to be more aggressive inside and make more plays on the interior. I understand Bill Nagy from Hudson could be a D-line prospect, but I've never seen him play so I can't comment on him. He likely could play offense as well on the line. About wide receivers, I'd like to see Rob Parris get an offer from the instate guys. I have to wait on a Troy Pascley at this time.

buckeye 59 (May 6, 2005 1:20:58 PM)
Gary, Don't you think that Peterson taking over SW Ohio has to help us with Smith and Brown?

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 1:20:58 PM)
Hi Buckeye 59 ... no question... I'm a big John Peterson fan just because of his background. He's a perfect fit for that area. I ultimately think Smith and Brown now their final destination at this time but it's good that Peterson is guarding that situation closely I'm sure. There's a boat load of talent in SW Ohio this year and Ohio State needs to mine its share of it.

fotownbuckeye (May 6, 2005 1:25:36 PM)
There was an interesting post talking about TG's chances of breaking the NCAA record for returns. the post turned into more of what impact on the game TG returning kicks has. Don't know if you saw it or not...but could you share your opinion....this may be a dumb question

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 1:25:36 PM)
I clicked ont that but didn't really study it to make a comment on it. But just look at what TGII did in like a half of a season. Four punt returns for TDs is just ridiculous...period. This kid is simply magical and he will only get better. I know this might not be a popular statement to make but TGII singlehandly saved the offense last late as the MSU game the offense was horrible...and he helped to prop up Troy Smith over Justin Zwick at this time. Granted Zwick did nothing to help his cause in the spring game but Zwick never really had the benefit of having a TGII at his disposal until the Bowl game when he was injured. Like Freddie Lenix said about Ginn Sr., .... with TGII all things are possible!

JimC (May 6, 2005 1:29:09 PM)
Gary, Any news on the extra game next year (opponents)? I heard some rumors about YSU

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 1:29:09 PM)
Hi JimC...I've heard the YSU thing for so long now...but the only thing important here to keep in mind is that JT himself once went down to OSU - probably with his tail between his legs - as the head man of YSU looking for an opportunity to play OSU in an 11-game schedule. He knows more than anyone how important that game would be to a school like YSU even though they're hardly the team they were since he's left there. I would say that JT could probably make this game happen if he chooses to. And now I really see no reason not to since I believe one I-AA game counts to the victory total. C'mon make it happen JT. I would literally be in heaven....and so would proud he would be.

edbuck51 (May 6, 2005 1:31:12 PM)
How do you think the depth chart on the current O-line will effect recruiting this year? I would think it would make it tougher to get the "big three", and possibly keep the total number to four or less.

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 1:31:12 PM)
Hi edbuck51...competition is every where. If a recruit thinks the competition will be easier at Michigan than at OSU then God bless him. The best players want to be recruited by the best teams period. And that's where the best competition is. I think we will take four linemen this year.

CABuck (May 6, 2005 1:32:50 PM)
Gary, I have been following recruiting for only about a year and a half. One concept that still gets me is the signing day commitments. I would think kids waiting until the last day to tell everyone puts a serious cramp on all schools involved, INCLUDING the one they commit to. How can these schools recruit effectively when they have 2-3 or more top priority kids who may all fall through in the end? How many of those guys who insist on waiting until the last day have already told their eventual school of their intentions, so they can recruit more effectively?

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 1:32:50 PM)
Hi CABuck... the short answer to that question is...if a school wants a player bad enough...a la Alex Daniels... you leave a spot open for him until the cows come home. That's just how it is.

fotownbuckeye (May 6, 2005 1:36:55 PM)
I agree that Zwick never had TG but to me he just doesnt look comfortable. Smith seems to have the team behind him and plays with a confidence/swagger that Zwick just doesnt seem to have. Do you think there is anyway that Zwick will start over Smith when Smith gets back for Texas. And do you think Tress starts Smith against Texas?

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 1:36:55 PM)
I'm certain that Zwick will get the nod to open the season week one against Miami and unless he's a total disaster...he'll likely get the starting nod against Texas. Depending on how good Zwick does against Miami will depend on how much time and when Smith will be inserted in the game. Just the fact that JZ had game time against Miami is the main factor for him to start against Texas. Smith will not have any reps obviously in game conditions so I'm guess JT will insert him in the third series against Texas and go from there.

Guest (May 6, 2005 1:39:36 PM)
I read on an unnamed OSU fan site that TG Sr. thinks Jamario will start next year. What is your opinion?

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 1:39:36 PM)
Hi Blocko...Since I spent some time with Sr. this week and we were asked that question on a impromptu chat on the free board...I disagree with that statement. He basically said Jamario is talented enough to start but that is something that will have to be determined. He does think he's capable but I'm certain that Sr. didn't say he should or will start. I think Jamario is a vicious safety and loves to knock an opponent's head and helmet off. I'm sure we will see him somewhere next season. Too big and too fast to sit.

Guest (May 6, 2005 1:42:30 PM)
Who do think is the QB to beat in the camp QB derby? Bill Greene seems to think that Hartline is getting lots of love from OSU.

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 1:42:30 PM)
From Blocko about the QB recruits...I too think it will be Mike Hartline if they only take one. He's a very safe pick at the least. He's a real good quarterback and a better athlete than people give him credit for. I for one would love to see Hartline, Schoenhoft and Boeckman go at in two years for the starting job. Either of the three will have the shot..if Hartline is the guy this year.

skeelo (May 6, 2005 1:45:31 PM)
how is oneals hamstring? his times seem to be really slow at this time.

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 1:45:31 PM)
To be honest, the track coaches there - who are basically the football coaches as well - would like to see him testing it a little bit more than he is to this point. I won't say they're disappointed that he's not but they would like to see him test it more aggressively. The plan is for him to be ready for their district meet and go from there. And BTW, I asked TG Sr. why they didn't go to Penn Relays this year and he simply said they weren't good enough...Lenix excluded obviously. He's having a great track season. Smile!

Guest (May 6, 2005 1:46:33 PM)
What are you hearing about Downing's knee?

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 1:46:33 PM)
Blocko asked about Downing's knee and I have to say that mum's the word right now. I'll keep checking but I have no first-hand information on his situation right now.

CABuck (May 6, 2005 1:49:47 PM)
Seems to me Zwick has the tools, and we all know what he did in H.S., but maybe not the nerve for the game at this level? He sometimes just seems unsure, a little skittish and nervous. Do you see any of that, maybe the pressure is too much, confidence lacking? If so, do you see more time on the field settling him down?

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 1:49:47 PM)
I was a big fan of his brother Jared Zwick when he went to YSU and he wasn't as prolific as his younger brother but he was darn good in high school and he never panned out for JT at YSU. I thought it was a miracle in itself that Justin would even want to play for JT at OSU. But Jared and the family obviously loved JT for who he was that they sent Justin to play for him as well. And now it's looking like potentially JZ might not have much of a career for JT at Ohio State. Don't count Justin out yet by any means, but the odds and the trend right now is not in his favor...for whatever reasons.

BuckeyeDave (May 6, 2005 1:52:40 PM)
What are the plans for the next installment of Bucknuts TV? Are you going tobe doing those regularly next season?

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 1:52:40 PM)
Hi BuckeyeDave...that's a question that Steve could handle for you. I usually try to hit a Saturday night high school game if OSU plays in the early afternoon so in that situation I wouldn't be available...but I'm sure Steve is looking into anything that makes us a better product and the only product for the OSU football fanatic to want to consume. Seriously...we have no competition...are you kidding me! Smile!

CABuck (May 6, 2005 1:54:31 PM)
Gary, I guess my question is mainly about the signing day recruits and if most of them really don't tell ANY school their intentions? Just seems to me if they know a month or two in advance (which they usually do I would guess) that they would at least silent verbal so their eventual school can recruit better.

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 1:54:31 PM)
Some certainly do just that CABuck...for instance... Maurice Wells was the loudest silent verbal that I've ever heard. But others go down to the wire.

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 1:55:27 PM)
The questions have dried up at this point... are there any others? Send them now if you have any.

CABuck (May 6, 2005 2:00:50 PM)
For the Texas game, I would imagine we will have Hawk or Carpenter spying on Young all game. We have had success against such teams with that do you see it playing out this year? Same plan and do you think Young will have much success in getting around that?

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 2:00:50 PM)
Young is a major talent no question but I'm certain we will be able to contain with a spy as you say or just an overall effort. With out Benson in the backfield they will have one less major weapon to inflict damage with so I can see the defense really trying to take Young out of the game on the ground and have him beat them through the air. We have a new coordinator now but the objective is the same....don't ever get beat deep on defense thru the air.

skeelo (May 6, 2005 2:03:54 PM)
what was the main thing you liked about L.WILSON the player

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 2:03:54 PM)
The main thing that I like about Wilson is that he's so much more talented than he even knows he is right now. Wilson didn't dominate games on defense and I saw him play about four times last year. But his athletic ability is so tremendous and when the confidence comes along with that he could be tremendous. He's got a big body and he's athletic and his best football days are certainly ahead of him. His upside is tremendous. And he's such a classy young man and he comes from a great family. I like all of that.

labsbeabmm (May 6, 2005 2:04:54 PM)
I read that Texas already had 15 or more verbals how does that happen?

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 2:04:54 PM)
Hi labsbeabmm...they know who they want, they target them and they go after they don't lose them to Oklahoma! There's a lot of talent in Texas.

JimC (May 6, 2005 2:07:55 PM)
How big a of a loss is Coach Snyder? Is Beckman a better candidate for D-Coordinator?

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 2:07:56 PM)
I would have no idea if Beckman is a better candidate than Heacock but I do know that JT has a longstanding relationship with Heacock, going back to when they coached against each other in I-aa and probably before that. JT trusts Heacock immensely and knows what he's getting with Heacock and Heacock is a veteran coach. I'm sure the defense will be fine under Heacock.

rbuck (May 6, 2005 2:09:30 PM)
Is it ok to miss a Cousin's wedding over two tickets for the OSU v. Texas game?

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 2:09:30 PM)
No question rbuck...anyone in my extended family knows that if you have a wedding from August through December, then they shouldn't expect me to be there. It's a no-brainer...see you at the stadium if they don't reschedule the wedding. Smile!

CABuck (May 6, 2005 2:12:09 PM)
Do you know much about Youboty, personally in regards to future plans. With a big year, he could be NFL bound. Do you know or have you heard anything said by him in regards to finishing school, going to the NFL, etc. Would love to have him around another year, he is GOOD.

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 2:12:09 PM)
I'm guessing he'll be a wanted man if he has another year like he did last year. I see him as a tremendous pro prospect but I think all four years will do him well...unless he's just ridiculous next year. He might not be tested that much to know. Especially with the other corner spot being up in the air right now...not to say that Tyler Everett isn't exactly chopped liver. He has a history of making big plays. We shall see.

BuckeyeDave (May 6, 2005 2:12:30 PM)
What are the dates for the next few Bucknuts-the magazine?

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 2:12:30 PM)
Steve is the man to ask that ... sorry!

BuckeyeDave (May 6, 2005 2:14:21 PM)
Coach was at Cinti-Princeton this past tuesday to pay aaron Brown a visit!

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 2:14:21 PM)
I'm sure the Brown family was happy to see that. I met Aaron in person for the first time at the spring game and I liked very much what I saw. I've seen all three...Boren, Brown and Smith... in person without their pads on and all three pass the look test with flying colors.

rbuck (May 6, 2005 2:16:00 PM)
From what you've seen, do any of the Big 3 linemen compare to Alex Boone?

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 2:16:00 PM)
I've only seen Smith in person and I didn't know who he was at the time so I didn't really watch him I can't really answer that right now. But Boone was so good at running down LB's when he wasn't smashing guys directly in front of him ... so the bar is set pretty high in my opinion.

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 2:17:59 PM)
If I haven't said this yet...I saw Thaddeus Gibson in person at his school this week for the first time and he's tall and rangy and mild mannered. His coach can't say enough good things about his ability and I think he's only going to better with more experience. He's only been playing football since the 9th grade... basketball was/is his first love. I chatted with him for a brief time and will have a story posted on him this weekend some time. Ohio State certainly has a real good shot at him.

CABuck (May 6, 2005 2:20:11 PM)
Dionte Johnson...I was somewhat surprised to see him used twice in the Michigan game during that goal line stand, once with the run up the middle and once with the pass to the flat. Seems to show a lot of trust in the freshman. Does that translate to solid playing time and carries/catches this year, or was it more situational and will remain such this year? Seems like a real good kid, team player, and solid FB

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 2:20:11 PM)
Somewhat surprising on JTs part... but yes Dionte will be a solid player over the next few seasons for OSU. It was also surprising to see Schnittker run the way he did in the spring I'm sure both guys will have opportunities to have success this coming season. Johnson is obviously the better blocker.

CABuck (May 6, 2005 2:20:37 PM)
Thanks for all the answers today. First time participating, love to read the chats, lots of good info.

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 2:20:37 PM)
Thank you for participating!

GaryHousteau (May 6, 2005 2:22:11 PM)
With that...we shall call it a day. Thanks to all of you who participated with questions and to those of you who simply read thru the chat while it's going on or at a later time. The number in attendance during the chat was much better than usual and I thank you for your interest. Have a great weekend. Enjoy the beautiful weather. Go Bucks!
