Chat Transcript - Gary Housteau (5/12)

Gary Housteau stopped by club chat today for some football and recruiting talk. Read on for a transcript of the chat. managing editor Steve Helwagen will conduct a Chat at 1 p.m. Friday.

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 1:07:52 PM)
Hi everyone...did you all noticed the password that Kirk chose for today...maydays! I wonder if that's in any reference to the fact that Ohio State is in a dire situation with or for Justin Boren...mayday, mayday! Smile...bring on the questions if you have any. Fire away!

JimC (May 12, 2005 1:09:55 PM)
Who will the QB that gets the offer? Hartline looks like he had a good camp.

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 1:09:55 PM)
Hi JimC...thanks for the starting off the chat today. I somehow believe it will be Mike Hartline who gets that first offer. He had two fairly impressive camp days last week in New Jersey and Michigan and I have a hunch that after or around OSU's camp that Hartline will be the first of the Big 3 QB's to get an offer.

Tmoney (May 12, 2005 1:12:01 PM)
Some say Chris Smith is the best QB is Ohio. He's only a sophomore, can this be true? What do you know about Chris? (fingers crossed for Boren)

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 1:12:01 PM)
Hi Tmoney...I wish I was able to comment on Chris Smith however I only know what everyone else knows who has read up on him in the past couple of days. What I do know is that the Federal League is a pretty good league and that gives Hartline an edge right off the bat. Solid DI competition almost every week if not every week. Can't say that about Smith, Davis or Schlichter. It's pretty good football in the Federal League in the Stark County area.

edbuck51 (May 12, 2005 1:14:18 PM)
Why do you think the coaches are offering out of state QB's but have yet to offer the in state guys?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 1:14:18 PM)
Hi edbuck51 because in reality they have to be a player for the national QB's even though the likelihood of them landing one is almost nil. The instate guys are more realistic to their pickings and they can take their time and evaluate them personally at camp. Face it...if they didn't offer some of these OOS QBs when they do/did then they wouldn't even have the small chance they have with them. The instate guys however are more of a reality.

RockvilleBuck (May 12, 2005 1:18:22 PM)
News reports stated that there may be other OSU athletes involved in the Skeete debacle. Any scuttle about who else might be involved?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 1:18:22 PM)
Hi RockvilleBuck...I'm not privy to any other names and I've checked with a couple of sources this morning already. I'm not saying there aren't any others involved but I'm not aware of who they may be.

Smiggers (May 12, 2005 1:24:41 PM)
Looking through Justin Boren's eyes at the depth charts, how do you think he views his opportunity for early playing time at OSU Vs. UM?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 1:24:41 PM)
Good question Smiggers...I don't know much about Michigan's offensive line or the depth that they have but they must really be loaded if Boren believes he has a better chance of playing early at Ohio State by looking at the depth chart. What I see is that Barton isn't going anywhere. Mitchum is a mainstay. Person is gonna play somwhere. Cordle is a player. Boone is going to be around for a while. Rehring isn't going anywhere anytime soon. That's a full depth chart that I see. It will take a real stud to crack that lineup over the next two or three years. Am I wrong? Go figure.

JimC (May 12, 2005 1:29:19 PM)
Gary, If Boren goes to UM, will Tilley get an offer?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 1:29:19 PM)
I certainly don't have that answer. Boren is projected as more of a guard so I don't know if that's an equal tradeoff in that hypothetical. Boren hasn't went anywhere, yet. Yet is the operative word there. I believe OSU needs three OL minimum and four would give them megadepth. Quality depth for years. I like Palmer but he may be a tackle and I like Browning and he could be an interior guard. I also like Joe Thomas at guard. Bill Nagy is extremely underrated. Someone who's opinion I trust dearly outside of Bucknuts told me yesterday that Nagy has some of the same qualities of an Orlando Pace. Big statement.

edbuck51 (May 12, 2005 1:32:15 PM)
I'm not saying it will happen, but let's assume Boren goes north. Mr. Brown and his son seem at best to be 50 - 50 right now. Do you think the coaches will start shopping out of state first, or will they go to Tilley, Palmer, etc.?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 1:32:15 PM)
I think Ohio State will continue to court the instate linemen and with that being said, I hope they all go to camp. Why worry about an offensive lineman from the south up until signing day when the home grown crop is so fertile this year. My mantra remains...all things being equal...go with the instate lineman. Face it...unless you're an Orlando Pace's extremely hard to tell how good any lineman will be until they've been in the program for a couple of years.

Tmoney (May 12, 2005 1:34:41 PM)
Is Tim Tebow still an option for OSU? I think he might be the best QB in the country.

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 1:34:41 PM)
Sure Tebow remains an option until he commits somewhere else. I watched him a little down at San Antonio and I liked what I saw...I didn't really know who he was at the time. But it's really hard to say he's the best QB in the country.

fotownbuckeye (May 12, 2005 1:38:02 PM)
Not football related but how do you feel about some users being banned from the Wake boards? Should something like follow an individual communities rules or regulations or should this be governed by scout? I was banned by the Wake mods for defending OSU against some rather harsh comments. The level of my comment was nothing compared to what was already written. Your thoughts?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 1:38:02 PM)
Hi offense or disrespect to your question, because I really appreciate your attendance here at the chat every week and you're obviously a great Buckeye fan, but I really have nothing to say about that at all. I'm not passing the buck to Steve but he would much more knowledge about policies of the Scout organization. I just work here as they say. Sorry but no real comment because it's a non issue for me! Smile!

Guest (May 12, 2005 1:41:46 PM)
Hi Gary, What does your Crystal Ball tell you Justin Boren will do?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 1:41:46 PM)
Thanks for the crystal ball question about Boren rbuck but if I dusted it off right now and peeked in, I would have to say that in the future he would be singing that awful fight song and wearing that pathetic winged helmet with the ugliest uniforms, especially the road uniforms, in America. And I have my reasons.

edbuck51 (May 12, 2005 1:46:53 PM)
Why do you say our chances with an OOS QB are almost nil?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 1:46:53 PM)
Well if you're from OOS first of all, you're caught up in the fervor of what it is to play for Ohio State. It would be just another school to you. With that said, none of these OOS are going to want to wait for a chance to play when you look at Boeckman and Schoenhoft already waiting in the wings after Smith and Zwick are gone...which would be their redshirt freshman season. I just think they might see better opportunities elsewhere...after all, OSU isn't really the pass happy school that a lot of the fans are expecting them to become now. But we shall see! Run is always going to be the first option for JT if the parts are serviceable.

What is the likelihood of Aaron Pettrey getting a scholarship if Skeete is dismissed from the team?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 1:54:05 PM)
WayneWoodrow asked about Pettrey getting a scholarship offer is Skeete is dismissed form the team? In all fairness, let's not convict Skeete until he's went thru the legal process and JT has rendered a decision on his future with the team after that. I don't know how guilty and of exactly what it is that Skeete is guilty of but unless he's part of a criminal organization and not just a reliable source for a certain group of guys be it players or others who indulge...then JT may temper his final decision accordingly. I certainly don't condone what Skeete has done but I went to college and I know the goings on as well as the next guy. If Pettrey benefits because of Skeete's self inflicted misfortune, then good for be it. I know Thoma, for instance, has a strong leg and could be the answer if Pettrey or someone else isn't. Ohio State needs someone after Huston is gone.

edbuck51 (May 12, 2005 1:57:22 PM)
What are your thoughts on OSU possibly scheduling YSU?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 1:57:22 PM)
Couldn't be happier. I used to long for that game so much when I was more involved with YSU. And now that I'm privileged to be involved with OSU now, I would love to see the Penguins in the Horseshoe. It would be a great day and a proud moment for me when that happens. And it's going to happen...probably in 2006. And for those whiners out 1-AA victory will count toward the necessary bowl-eligible amount needed which will be seven total with a 12-game schedule. Go 'Guins!

Who do you like to win the cornerback job opposite Youbouty this season?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 2:00:37 PM)
WayneWoodrow asks about the open cornerback spot opposite Youboty and it's looking as if Tyler Everett will be that man, at least initially. Let's hope Everett will be the play maker that he has become at corner that he has been at safety or at the nickel. I can see TGII at corner in the redzone situations. Sirjo Welch helped his cause a lot this spring and he's already the best player on the coverage units on the special teams.

riverwatchbucknut (May 12, 2005 2:05:30 PM)
Gary do you think Boren passes the "look" test. I hear he is the most physically ready of the instate lineman but from the last picture I saw of him he looked a little overweight for his build.

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 2:05:30 PM)
Hi riverwatchbucknut...I'll be totally honest with you and say that the picture of him at the Nike camp was very flattering to his build but when I saw him in person in March he looked fantastic. He's just a thick solid football player who would look great in scarlet and gray. He's a stud. Again I'll say it...that even though it doesn't look good for OSU right now, the house that the family is building or has built has all the amenities JB could ever want including a profession weight room facility and he's a home it's never over until it's over. But again I'll say that I truly believe it's over! And I'll happily eat crow if I'm not correct on that gut feeling.

Guest (May 12, 2005 2:09:00 PM)
What is Redgie Arden's possibilities of getting meaningful playing time and at what position?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 2:09:00 PM)
WayneWoodrow with another strong question asks about Redgie Arden and it's hard to gauge with Kudla being out for the spring but I believe his best chance for playing time will be on the end of the defensive line. He's still a big body and he has to be tough as nails and he was a big time linebacker prospect at one time. I just think he adds to the depth that Ohio State has on the defensive line. Having him around might prevent Worthington or Wilson or Williams from being pressed into duty this first year. I'm pretty sure Arden can still play football.

redondo (May 12, 2005 2:13:09 PM)
Gary - How big of a problem (percentage-wise or other) do you think steroids are at the H.S. & Div 1 College football level? What are your thoughts on this topic for these two classes of athletes? Thank you.

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 2:13:09 PM)
Hi redondo... wow...I really have no idea. I'm too far removed from any locker room to be able to make a comment on that. I would guess they are accessible for the asking but it's akin to dealing crack cocaine these days. There's such a negative perception of anything to do with steroids and the risks of being caught or even connected to them are much too dangerous to deal with. I think it is a very small percentage at both levels. Education is the only solution to steroid use. Thank you for that question.

Tmoney (May 12, 2005 2:16:11 PM)
I don't know why so many are terrified of the Texas game. Recent history shows that running QB's are ineffective against us (especially with freak LB's like Hawk out there). Plus Texas lost there work horse tailback and some key defenders. Not to mention we will be in the Shoe. What's your take?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 2:16:11 PM)
Tmoney you are the man! I couldn't agree more even though Young may be the biggest freak to ever step foot in the 'Shoe. Wait till Carpenter and Hawk start knocking him around a few times. For the reasons you mentioned and more...I like the Bucks in a nasty way. And I'm so excited to see the high school game prior to that. What a great day off football in Columbus that will be.

edbuck51 (May 12, 2005 2:16:58 PM)
Has anything leaked out about TJ Downing's injury?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 2:16:58 PM)
I heard from a source that everything went well with the surgery and he will be full go in August.

Guest (May 12, 2005 2:22:00 PM)
What do you think of Todd Boeckmans talent.? Do you feel that he will be the next QB at OSU after Zwick and Smith leave over Schoenhoft?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 2:22:00 PM)
Bucknut24 asks about Boeckman...I will say that I liked a lot more what I saw of him this spring than last spring so that's a good thing. I haven't obviously seen him enough to comment intelligently on him either way. I don't see him supplanting Smith or Zwick at all this year but he may bet some reps in the Miami game as a reward for him sitting out of the Bowl game last year when Zwick got injured and they went with TGII. I just get really good vibes from Schoenhoft. I like his demeanor and I like his work ethic and I like his skill level at QB. I think he could be a potential bona fide star. The best at Ohio State in more than 20 years since that other number 10 guy was around.

BuckeyeDave (May 12, 2005 2:23:41 PM)
In your opinion, what is the likelihood of a game against Youngstown St in 'O6?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 2:23:41 PM)
Very likely according to some in the media up here. JT has been in the Y-town area this past week for a couple of events and he's been on TV a couple of times commenting on the likelihood of it happening sooner rather than later. But it will happen. It's big news up here.

bamabucknut (May 12, 2005 2:26:51 PM)
Sorry if this has been asked...any new news on our quest for OL recruits ? Boren etc....

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 2:26:51 PM)
Hi babmabucknut...nothing really new at this time. Steve introduced D.J. Burris from Kenton in one of his articles and his name as been around for a while now. He would be another solid guard prospect to throw into the mix but nothing really new at this time. Boren is still deciding if he really wants to follow his dad to Michigan or not. The longer he waits...the better chance for another change of heart. If he loves Michigan so much than I wish he would commit already and get it over with. We shall soon find out.

bucknut24 (May 12, 2005 2:30:12 PM)
Gary what is the word on E.J Underwood. He is in one of my classes this quarter and he seemed 100% sure that he was going to be back this fall. I don't here much about his progress on bucknuts so i was curious. He seems like he has a lot of talent that hasn't been shown yet.....

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 2:30:12 PM)
I don't believe we will be seeing number two on the field again. I hope I'm wrong but he is one of a small group of guys that I'm hearing are in danger of not being on or around the team much longer. Things can change and we know that they do...and I hope E.J. can still salvage his career at Ohio State .

Guest (May 12, 2005 2:32:54 PM)
Are you going to be taking in any high school games in PA this year?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 2:32:54 PM)
edbuck asks about any high school games in PA this year I might be attending...I would love to see Woodland Hills this year. I want to see how Wesley Lyons looks. He'll likely pick between OSU and Miami and I think we will be seeing him go with his brother. Both Devon and Wesley and tremendous young men.

JimC (May 12, 2005 2:35:46 PM)
Gary, Will Russell Anderson get a look at TB? Will we try redshirt Mo Wells?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 2:35:47 PM)
Yes I think you have to look at Russell Anderson at tailback with the kind of spring track season he's having. He's a football player and a great athlete obviously and as I told people before he comes recommended from one of JT's most trusted advisors and confidants in Doc Spurgeon. Anderson is a football player. Maurice Wells has no intention of red shirting. I penned a story on him recently for one of the magazines and he has designs on playing time this year. He's up for the challenge. Can't wait to see him carry the ball.

Guest (May 12, 2005 2:38:43 PM)
It seems totally possible to me that no matter what Boren does now he is going to do a lot of soul searching before the first Wednesday in February. Even though he is going to announce now, doesn't it seem like his decision will come sometime down the road, whichever way he goes?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 2:38:43 PM)
edbuck asks about Boren again and I believe that, from talking to him, once he makes his decision or convinces himself to make a decision that he will stick to that decision and put it behind him. He's probably already preparing himself for the backlash he will feel from whichever team he doesn't choose. So please be easy on him Ohio State fans. Wish him well and move past it.

nybuck (May 12, 2005 2:43:12 PM)
Gary, I really liked Cordle at center & Mangold at RG in the Spring game. Cordle looked like he has been around for years. Do you see the staff using this lineup in the Fall? Also, how about Carpenter at MLB along with Hawk & Freeman on the sides if they are to play the three best LB's this makes the most sense to me!

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 2:43:12 PM)
Hi nybuck...some good comments. I will say this about Cordle, he actually looked a lot smaller that I thought he would look both on the practice field and in the spring game. But I think he's a football player and he will give OSU some flexibility in the two deep. That is a likely scenario to see Mangold at guard but I think would only come if the options at guard aren't as appealing. I think Mitchum will be the answer at one guard when he's healthy and maybe Sims at the other if not Datish. To start the season anyway. I love Freeman. Great athlete and football player. He's freakish in his own right. Sure I personally would love to see Hawk, Carpenter and Freeman in together... a lot. But I'm still a big Mike D'Andrea guy. And if Schlegel is the guy in the middle then I'm okay with that too. Freeman has to play though.

Guest (May 12, 2005 2:44:33 PM)
Don't you think the Iowa game is a much bigger worry than the Texas game?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 2:44:34 PM)
Could be indeed...but with Texas and Iowa both being at home Ohio State is just too solid overall not to get a 'W' in both instances.

Guest (May 12, 2005 2:46:03 PM)
Switching to basketball..Aren't Oden and Conley supposed to commit soon? Today or tomorrow, or am I way off base?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 2:46:03 PM)
Buckeye Dave asks about Oden and Conley...I believe that if the NBA collective bargaining issues don't have any impact on Oden and Conley then both will be Buckeyes. That will give us four of the 'Thad Five' in place.

bucknut24 (May 12, 2005 2:47:40 PM)
Gary, How is Maurice Wells doing? What is his attitude like and how is track season going for him?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 2:47:40 PM)
Wells is working out everyday with another kid from kid that's going to a smaller D-1 program. He is coming to Ohio State sometime in May to begin preparations for Ohio State. He is expecting to make an impact when he gets here.

nybuck (May 12, 2005 2:49:31 PM)
Gary, Speaking of O-line rotations, what is Ben Person up to? He was a leader within his class, then sort of fell off the earth.

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 2:49:31 PM)
I don't know specifically the status of Person right now but his dad has commented on occasion on the message board that his son is doing well and is basically biding his time right now. I can't say for certain but I'm sure he'll be somewhere solidly positioned in the two-deep...probably at guard.

BuckeyeJoe (May 12, 2005 2:50:37 PM)
Will the kicker Skeete (sp?) problem cause him any long term problems with the team if he keeps his nose clean in the future?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 2:50:37 PM)
Hi BuckeyeJoe...I think the legal ramifications will have to sort itself first before anything else can be dealt with in regards ot his future with the team. We will have to wait and see.

flbuck (May 12, 2005 2:51:40 PM)
Gary, how is J ONeal and lenix on qualifying academically?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 2:51:40 PM)
Hi flbuck...we've already addressed that question earlier if you can scroll through the chat at a later time. But thanks for asking anyway. Both should eventually okay from what I'm hearing.

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2005 2:55:19 PM)
That will do it for today. It's been a fast moving and hopefully an informative chat session today. I want to thank Kirk as always for his help to set up the chat and then post it later on. He's the unsung hero of this organization for the tireless work he does. Thanks to all of you who have participated in the chat and thanks as well to everyone for taking the time to read through the chat at a later time. I'm going to a couple of league track meets on Friday so I'm looking forward to seeing a lot of talent of which some will be headed to Ohio State in the future. See ya next time. Have a great day and weekend. Go Bucks!
