Lamb Chat Archive - June 12

Kyle Lamb stopped by Sunday evening to talk about the latest basketball news and developments. Read on for a transcript.

bw1954 (Jun 12, 2005 9:09:20 PM)
Kyle , how many schollies will Matta give out for 2006 ? Also . who do you think is our top 2 realistic prospects for the power forward (4 ) position ?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:10:26 PM)
I'm fairly certain you will see about five scholarships in the 2006 recruiting class, but no less than four and as many as six. Realistically, I think as of this moment in time Raymar Morgan and Luke Harangody are still the two most realistic, but I still think there's a long ways to go before guys like Brian Carlwell and Lance Thomas are off the board

cap10buckeyes (Jun 12, 2005 9:11:13 PM)
Buck, why has Bucknuts taken a passive approach to O&C in the past few weeks? Why Bucknuts opt to take this strategy?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:12:53 PM)
This is basically all my call. I feel that you guys know as much as I can possibly tell you at this moment in time, and they just aren't going to say anything more publicly that we haven't reiterated a thousand times already. They are tired of the process, the calls were getting to be a real headache for the Conley family, and I chose to be a part of the solution and not part of the problem. I am very confident that if any news breaks, I'm in a good position to be able to report it to everyone... so that being said, I just wanted to let things fall where they may.

land2088 (Jun 12, 2005 9:13:02 PM)
Can you tell us about how Mullen is progressing. Do you think we offered him to early, or is he coming along as expected?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:14:51 PM)
Mullens was worth the offer, I believe without much question. The kid has a really high ceiling. Right now, he's been having a few rough outings this spring, but he's also had some really good showings too. I think most people have always felt he's still perhaps a little more raw than say Yancey Gates or Delvon Roe, but he has such good size, control, and athleticism (not to mention coordination) for a young kid that he's hard to pass on. Remember, this is a kid that reportedly took it to Terence Dials this past fall in a pick-up game. He will have a few bumps in the road, but nothing to panic about

Kearns to AAA (Jun 12, 2005 9:14:55 PM)
Kyle what do you think of the bigman class for 2007? Especially about Koufos, I hear he is playing very well this summer?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:15:26 PM)
Poor Austin Kearns, a victim of Wily Mo's big return! You can bet the clubhouse in Cinci is not happy about losing Austin, especially after Graves' release...

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:15:37 PM)
haha, now that my baseball fix is out of the way...

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:16:40 PM)
Koufos is a guy that really, really needs to be watched and you hit the nail on the head. The kid is a legit star in the making. At 6-9 or 6-10 he's aggressive, physical, strong, tough, and also a good shooter. He's only a junior-to-be, and he's only getting better. That class with him, Lauderdale, Ellis, and Pogue is very solid.

bw1954 (Jun 12, 2005 9:16:44 PM)
Please give us the teamcamp schedule . Is it open to the public ?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:17:17 PM)
Yes, the Ohio State team camp is open to the public. It's free of admission both Friday and Saturday, and will be held at the Schottenstein Center main gym, practice gym, and St. John Arena....

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:17:33 PM)
I'm in the process of compiling all the schedules... But I can at least tell you Dayton Dunbar's entire schedule...

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:18:23 PM)
Friday at 4:30 PM they play New Castle, Indiana... at 6:30 they play Upper Sandusky, and at 8:30 in the Value City Arena, they play Lawrence North with Mike Conley and Greg Oden...

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:19:00 PM)
Saturday they play Solon and Columbus Brookhaven at I believe 8:30 and 10:30, but allow me to double-check those times before you take that as gospel

cap10buckeyes (Jun 12, 2005 9:19:12 PM)
When and what is the most recent word on O&C recruitment??

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:20:50 PM)
Well, I've been hearing for a couple of weeks that Conley and Oden didn't want to stretch their recruitment into the July recruiting period once the contact period begins, because it was basically down to a couple of teams and they didn't want to lead any teams on if it wasn't necessary. I still think this is a two-horse race: Ohio State and Wake Forest, and I believe it will be coming to a close soon, although we thought that once before. I still think Ohio State has a very solid chance to get their commitments.

Kearns to AAA (Jun 12, 2005 9:20:57 PM)
Which player would you rather have round out your class, Luke Harangody or Raymar Morgan?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:22:15 PM)
That's really a tough question. I'm one of Morgan's bigger fans, but Harangody is a terrific ball player. I think Ohio State's preference is Harangody, but it all depends on whether or not they bring Morgan in for wing or PF. If in fact they can use the versatility of Harangody as a 4/5, then I would advocate Morgan as the four. I think either would be a good haul.

MJ (Jun 12, 2005 9:22:19 PM)
Any thoughts or comments about the HB0 special with Oden and his mother?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:23:42 PM)
I didn't get to watch it because I was gone Friday, and my VCR didn't do the recording it was supposed to do (darned technology). But in talking to some people that saw it, I would say it was nothing really out of the blue. I know it was done kind of like the family was really excited about the NBA, but I think their advocating his ultimate goal of getting there was kind of blown out of proportion in that they still very much want Greg to go to college first, and I still very much believe he will.

land2088 (Jun 12, 2005 9:23:59 PM)
Where do you see Harris fitting in next year, it seems that if he doesn't develop some toughness inside, he will not be much of a factor.

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:24:54 PM)
It's still all on Ivan. Harris still has as much potential as anyone on the roster in my honest opinion, but he also can be very ordinary if he doesn't have a consistent mean streak. If he rebounds, my hunch is that he will see a lot more time. If not, he may be out of favor to Sylvester and Brayden Bell.

bw1954 (Jun 12, 2005 9:24:58 PM)
What 's the story with Tucker or Young ?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:26:20 PM)
Jamil Tucker is still in the evaluation phase I believe. He's a lot like Harris, which can be good and bad. If Tucker continuously crashes the boards and isn't afraid of contact, he has a high upside. I think the fear would be not to find any "soft" fours. I don't think Tucker is soft, but right now i'm not sure he's what they are looking for...

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:27:05 PM)
As for Thaddeus Young, I think North Carolina is the leader still, but Duke has gotten involved, and Memphis, Kansas, and Ohio State continue to be in the race from everything I hear. Young won't be doing anything until fall, so there's still time with that

land2088 (Jun 12, 2005 9:27:13 PM)
Have you heard any reports if Harris is doing anything different this year to make this part of his game better

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:28:27 PM)
I hear he's working hard, but then again, he worked hard last year too. He got his body fat down to 4.9 percent and was in considerably better shape this year. The problem is, it's really tough for a player to get "tougher" just by working hard. You either get it or you don't. I'm not sure that's something he can really do other than to train his mind to do the dirty work.

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:31:11 PM)
I'm all caught up in questions, if you have any more... but I would like to take this time to remind everyone that the McDonald's Summer League of Worthington begins this Thursday, the 16th...

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:31:42 PM)
Stay with us over the next day or so for more information as we compile the full list of rosters and schedules, but it should be an exciting year to watch basketball

MJ (Jun 12, 2005 9:31:51 PM)
Wake has a lot of good PG recruits interested, any chance they take one of the others before Conley makes his decision?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:32:35 PM)
I think Wake Forest would now take the first PG that wants to commit, but I'm not sure any of the others are going to decide any sooner. Javaris Crittenton and Jeremiah Rivers both could be committing somewhere fairly soon, but it could be weeks or months.

Kearns to AAA (Jun 12, 2005 9:33:03 PM)
do you think Dallas Lauderdale is basically a Syracuse and Ohio State battle?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:34:09 PM)
I do think that, although recent events suggest that perhaps distance is going to possibly be an overwhelming factor in Lauderdale's recruitment and ultimate decision. Ohio State is in great shape with him, but Syracuse and Michigan are both players. Cleveland State seems to be involved, interestingly enough.

bw1954 (Jun 12, 2005 9:34:15 PM)
Is ND the leader for Harangody ? Is his decision imminent ?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:34:50 PM)
I do believe Notre Dame is the leader, but I think Purdue and Ohio State both still have a pulse. I would be kind of surprised if Harangody doesn't decide by the first week or so of July.

BuckDiego (Jun 12, 2005 9:36:47 PM)
Kyle, Any word on how Bell progressed this season? Do you expect him to contribute right away? And could you detail the circumstances surrounding his precipitous national rankings drop?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:38:11 PM)
I think in terms of scoring he could add a little help off the bench, but given the caliber of his team's competition and how they did this year (only 13-11 on the season), it's really tough to judge how he will be able to parlay his talents at the next level. The combination of his injuries last summer and a quiet senior season (by way of his team not doing a lot), has clouded the fact he did average 21 points and 12 rebounds. He should contribute, but it's hard to say how much

lurch (Jun 12, 2005 9:38:19 PM)
Do you think Willie Walker is strictly a fallback option for Conley or would Matta bring him in if he decides he wants to commit along with Conley?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:39:11 PM)
No, I don't believe he's a fallback option. I believe Ohio State is genuinely interested in him regardless. Now, whether or not they are planning to take him even if they get Conley might be a different story, but I don't think they are looking at him as strictly a Plan-B type of guy

MJ (Jun 12, 2005 9:39:15 PM)
Will OSU ever offer Dante Jackson a 'ship?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:40:45 PM)
I think it's 50/50 right now. My guess is that if they are able to end up with someone like Eric Gordon, then probably not. However, they will watch him in Las Vegas this summer if possible, as well as this weekend at the team camp. If he does well when they are watching, he could get one. They do like him a lot as a kid they would love to have in the program from what I hear. Keep an eye on Jackson, as I hear that the Cincinnati Cowboys might no longer be together, so he may jump on with someone else.

bw1954 (Jun 12, 2005 9:40:49 PM)
What's the back up plan if Oden goes straight to the NBA ? We look weak in the post in 2006 !

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:41:38 PM)
They will continue to go after Brian Carlwell and Bryce Webster among others. Remember though, Matt Terwilliger is not yet chopped liver, and Dallas Lauderdale is in the 2007 class. Even if they didn't get Oden (because of Wake or the NBA), they might be just fine in the post.

The Man With The Plan (Jun 12, 2005 9:42:14 PM)
Who is the starting 5 next year?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:43:46 PM)
I would put my money early on Jamar Butler, Sylvester Mayes, J.J. Sullinger, Matt Sylvester, and Terence Dials... but I think you will see 30 minutes out of Ron Lewis, and if he doesn't start, it's only because Sullinger is playing well and Lewis can play any of the three backcourt positions off the bench as a super sub. My hunch is that Lewis will lead the Ohio State club in scoring this year.

MJ (Jun 12, 2005 9:44:10 PM)
Why has Conley dropped so far down on some recruiting list?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:45:48 PM)
I'm really not sure why, exactly. I know the kid is in a tight race with the top three or four PG's in the country (Tywon Lawson, D.J. Augustin, Sherron Collins, Scott Reynolds, and Tory Jackson to name a few), but I think given he's won a couple of MVP's this spring, he's getting dropped unfairly. I wouldn't worry too much about it though, he's played well, he's just not the type of kid that will wow the recruiting hype, and because of that, he loses out the close ratings battles at his position.

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:46:29 PM)
I've got time for about three or four more questions!

BuckInIll (Jun 12, 2005 9:47:24 PM)
Speaking of Mayes, what can we expect out of him this year? What style of play?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:49:19 PM)
You will see with Mayes a great shooter that has a very good college physique. He will play tough defense, make big shots, be a solid passer, and a good scorer. I think he will average around double-digits and shoot over 40 percent from behind the arc. He has NBA type of range, and really hits about everything when he catches fire. I think Ohio State fans will like him a lot. I believe he will be more polished in his first year at Ohio State than any guard since Scoonie Penn joined the team in 1999.

bw1954 (Jun 12, 2005 9:49:23 PM)
Does Oden and Conley declare for the same school ?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:49:35 PM)
I would be very surprised if they didn't.

labuck (Jun 12, 2005 9:49:51 PM)
Is Morgan waiting to see what happens with the 5-five star players before he commits or do you think he would actually come along with Thad five if it happens?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:51:36 PM)
I don't think Morgan will care what's happening one way or another... or let me rephrase that... if Ohio State wants him to come in as a member of the 2006 recruiting class, if Ohio State is the school he chooses, he would have absolutely no problems whatsoever joining a loaded class. I think he could even possibly be a sixth member to that type of class.

MJ (Jun 12, 2005 9:51:38 PM)
Lighty and Cook McDonalds All-Americans?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:52:31 PM)
Cook, barring any injury or something bizarre between now and next spring is a sure-fire McDonald's All-American at this point in the game most likely. Lighty is hard to say simply because of the injury. However, if Lighty has a big senior season, I expect that he will be as well.

ToMac (Jun 12, 2005 9:53:18 PM)
Several times during AAU sason you have given Jon Diebler bad reviews. What's the problem? Is he forcing his individual game at the expense of team?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:54:49 PM)
He's been taking off-balanced shots all spring, which I believe is a product of having quite a few of his shots deflected or blocked earlier in the spring. Additionally, too many times he's taking some quick shots. I don't think he's been a bad "team player" per se, but he's just forcing things too much. If he settles down, and lets the game come to him a little more, he would be fine. I still love his quick release, his range, and his quickness continues to improve... he just has to settle down and take his game to the next level against better competition.

bucksno1fan (Jun 12, 2005 9:54:56 PM)
I apologize for the late arrival. Can anyone give me a Cliff's Notes version of what has transpired so far?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:56:46 PM)
In short, I think Conley and Oden could probably choose to wind down their recruitment before the heat of the July period; Dunbar plays New Castle, Indiana, Upper Sandusky, and Lawrence North at 4:30, 6:30, and 8:30 on Friday night... all games at the team camp are open to the public and free of admission. The Lawrence North game is at the Schott/ Value City Arena; Harangody and Morgan are still the most likely PF options, but Thomas and Carlwell are possible... those are the highlights... a chat transcript should be up tomorrow

labuck (Jun 12, 2005 9:56:48 PM)
If Oden commits does Harangody (sp) go elsewhere or are we not afraid to use a schollie on him since Oden will be a 1 or 2 year player tops?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:57:45 PM)
Ohio State would still love to land a Harangody with or without Oden, but I think their chances would be much better to get him without. Naturally if you're Ohio State, you don't mind losing him if it means a Greg Oden committed, but they would love to land both of them.

bucksno1fan (Jun 12, 2005 9:58:46 PM)
Will there be any games on Saturday? I'm definitely going to come down if I can catch Oden/Conley/Cook or any other Buckeye notables. Thanks for the re-cap, Kyle.

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 9:59:52 PM)
Yes, there will be games in the morning and the tournament will be in the afternoon. Unfortunately I do not have the tournament times, so people will have to play it by ear... but the last of the pool games will be roughly at 8:30 and 10:30 in the morning on Saturday. Dunbar particularly plays Solon and Brookhaven that morning. I will have the preview tomorrow or Tuesday once I find out a handful of other teams that will be there.

bucksno1fan (Jun 12, 2005 10:00:01 PM)
So, is Harangody still a realistic shot for the Bucks? I was beginning to think that ship had sailed.

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 10:00:27 PM)
Realistic? Perhaps. But they are definitely on the losing end of the stick right now to Notre Dame.

labuck (Jun 12, 2005 10:01:06 PM)
What is your gut feeling with Josh Chichester? Will he be a Buck or will football take him elsewhere?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 10:01:46 PM)
Wherever he goes, it will probably be for football with an outside chance of playing basketball as well. So in other words, if he is going to be at Ohio State... it's in the hands of Jim Tressel.

bballbucks (Jun 12, 2005 10:01:48 PM)
is terwilliger on a summer league team?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 10:02:39 PM)
I'm told every Ohio State player and incoming recruit (Bell, Mayes, and Lewis), will be in action. The team each player plays on this year will be up to the individual OSU player... Matta has not assigned the holdovers as O'Brien had done in the past.

bucksno1fan (Jun 12, 2005 10:03:07 PM)
Kyle, in your opinion, has the Matta Express lost any momentum due to the Notice of Allegations levied against the program by the NCAA a couple weeks ago? At one time, it seemed that we were on the minds of almost every high-major prospect out there, but that seems to have cooled. Is Matta still working his rear off out there?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 10:05:50 PM)
He can't do quite as much right now as he can't call most of the junior recruits until next month, and he can't go out and watch any events during the quiet period. So for now, it's up to letters and the recruits that call the hotline at Ohio State to stay in touch. That being said, to answer your direction question, the NCAA issues have not been a real big factor for a while because most people that are educated on the situation realize that there is no precedent for a 3-year postseason ban, and all of the NCAA's findings in the letter sent to Ohio State were already dug up by the investigation by the university. So in other words, Ohio State knew this was coming and Matta had people prepared in talking to coaches, players, and families.

labuck (Jun 12, 2005 10:05:56 PM)
If Bill Walker goes to college, is he a package deal with his high school teammates (obviously if Mayo goes to school as well) or is he on his own, unlike Conely and Oden?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 10:07:14 PM)
If by some chance he and Mayo both go to college, chances are they would end up at the same school, although the package deal scenario is definitely rare to end up actually working out. Conley and Oden are definitely a rare exception if it does come to fruition.

MJ (Jun 12, 2005 10:07:19 PM)
Any interviews coming up soon with Conley or Oden?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 10:07:59 PM)
I will talk to them again if a decision is about to break or does break. If at this time next month there's still nothing new, I might go ahead and do an interview. I'll keep everyone posted though regardless.

labuck (Jun 12, 2005 10:08:12 PM)
Do you feel that Conely and Oden have been encouraged to make a decision by either OSU or Wake Forest soon so if they are the school who loses out they can begin to work in another direction with plan B?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 10:09:23 PM)
I think Wake Forest has done their best to expedite the process, but neither Wake or Ohio State have used the "commit or else" tactic. However, that being said, Wake has already made it clear they won't hold a scholarship for him any longer if they can get another PG.

bucksno1fan (Jun 12, 2005 10:10:23 PM)
Kyle, to the best of your ability to prognosticate, will Conley and Oden commit to Ohio State by this time next month?

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 10:11:55 PM)
I think they will be committed somewhere by that time... and I don't really see any other possible destinations other than Ohio State and Wake Forest. I said this a month ago, and I still feel the same... if I had a chance to be in Thad Matta's shoes or Skip Prosser's shoes, I would rather be in Matta's position with these two right now.

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 10:13:16 PM)
Okay folks, I need to get going, but thanks everyone for coming. Be sure to stay tuned for more team camp information, as well as more on the McDonald's Summer League. The team camp is open to the public free of admission to wander on in Friday evening or Saturday. Most of the action will be at the Schottenstein Center, but some will be there as well at St. John Arena. I'll be there for most of it, but i'm going to be on hand for the Dunbar-Lawrence North game on Friday at 8:30. Thanks for coming!

labuck (Jun 12, 2005 10:13:41 PM)
Thanks for the chat, Kyle! Go Bucks!!!

MJ (Jun 12, 2005 10:13:56 PM)
Nice Job!

Kyle S. Lamb (Jun 12, 2005 10:14:12 PM)
Thanks guys. Chat transcript will probably be up tomorrow by afternoon or evening at the latest. Take Care!
