Chat Transcript - Gary Housteau

Gary Housteau stopped by club chat after taking in OSU's first day of Senior Advanced Camp. Read on for a transcript.

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 7:14:23 PM)
Any questions on the senior camp today or tomorrow possibly and anything on the North Sout game could get us started. Bring it on!

greenbuck (Jun 24, 2005 7:15:48 PM)
Gary, how did the prospects from Beloit West Branch fare at camp today? anyone standout?

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 7:15:48 PM)
Hi Greenbuck...there were two of them there that I notice because of their efforts on the field and then they each were in the top 10 of on of the events and got recognized for it. If you name some names I might be able to pick them out.

BuckFan1 (Jun 24, 2005 7:18:29 PM)
Gary, first, thank you for all of your hard work. I saw on the front page that Conner Smith was there today. Was he by far the best lineman there today?

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 7:18:29 PM)
Hi BuckFan1... By far. Yes Connor Smith was the man today. It made my day seeing him there because we missing a really blue chipper until we spotted him about half way through the day. There was an OOS lineman by the name of Joshua Ogylsby (sp?) from Wisconsin, 6-7 315, that stood out on a physical basis. Tall and long. I think you might hear his name again. But Connor Smith was the main offensive lineman there today.

greenbuck (Jun 24, 2005 7:19:59 PM)
baltputnis, Thomas

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 7:19:59 PM)
Thomas was one of them....not sure about the other.

BuckeyeDave (Jun 24, 2005 7:22:44 PM)
What do you think of Vince Rivers from Cinti-Princeton? Will he get a look?

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 7:22:44 PM)
Sorry Buckeye Dave...I have not come across him as of yet and if he was there today I missed him. I did notice Julian Posey of LaSalle. He looked to be pretty smooth. He told me that Ben Martin is his guy. Martin is a future stud as Duane as already alluded to him.

busman64 (Jun 24, 2005 7:24:20 PM)
Gary any word on how connor smith did today?

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 7:24:20 PM)
Hi busman64... I thought he looked pretty good today. He was moving really well in some of the drills that I watched him in and he looked to be soaking up everything that Jim Bollman was teaching to the OL group. He's a top target of the staff I can assure you of that.

BuckeyeDave (Jun 24, 2005 7:26:47 PM)
When does Conley pull the trigger? With his buddies Cook and Oden committing to Ohio St, doesn't that kind of make any other commitment kind secon best?

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 7:26:47 PM)
My guys, even before today, have told me that they would be both be coming eventually and now it looks as if they sort of made it official. I don't know what the official word on the commitment of both of them is right now...I've been pretty busy today....but I believe it's imminent that both of them will be on board soon if they're not already on. Basketball, however, is not my forte as they say.

buckgrad (Jun 24, 2005 7:30:45 PM)
Im late, if its been said ignore my question, whats the hype so for at camp?

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 7:30:45 PM)
I think Derrell Johnson of Cardinal Mooney is a name that is swiftly moving up the charts. I interviewed him after camp today and he has a wonderful family story that has turned his life around for the better. Going to Cardinal Mooney is a part of that reincarnation. He's the real deal and he would love to play for the Buckeyes. Tom Becker of Wayzata High School in Minnesota was a pretty big name player there today. He was Laurinaitis' teammate and played next to him in the middle. He's actually the crazy one of the two and Laurinaitis father was a member of the Road Warriors. Tomorrow is the big name day.

buckgrad (Jun 24, 2005 7:32:02 PM)
any chance of a package deal to Glenville this year? nelson, rose, small, browning?

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 7:32:02 PM)
Hi bucgrad...I say two of those four are just about in the bag...Browning has a very small chance and I would say that Nelson has no chance.

busman64 (Jun 24, 2005 7:37:19 PM)
Hey Gary, any other O- Lineman from Ohio gonna get an offer besides Smith and Brown, considering Nagy is a probable d-lineman

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 7:37:19 PM)
At this point I would tend to say no right now...if Ohio State gets Brown and Smith. If not then I think they might look at one other from Ohio maybe. There's always the chance that Ballard could eventually move down to play tackle in the future even though he's a tight end now. I think the gap between the top three in state and the next group is pretty large in their eyes. I do find Nagy to be interesting because he can play pretty well on both sides of the ball. Don't really know. I think they might take one OOS guy if they can get one they like.

BuckeyeDave (Jun 24, 2005 7:40:43 PM)
What are the odds that C Smith goes elsewhere? Who was his Dad's position coach and HC at Ohio St?

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 7:40:43 PM)
I feel pretty good about Smith after today! I would guess Woody was his Dad's head coach but I don't know who the line coach was then. I don't have access to a media guide today to look up the years and tell you for certain. Steve would probably know that one right off the top of his head.

busman64 (Jun 24, 2005 7:43:25 PM)
Gary, whats your opinion on Alex Boone possibly getting to start this year, I like Barton, but he shows a ton of inconsistancy, everything I've seen from boone so far shows as if he is much better than Barton.

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 7:43:25 PM)
I don't think it will happen this year but it would be great if it came to be because that would mean that he's all that he's been built up to be and more. I can actually see him benefiting from a redshirt year if it happened, but he just might be ready to get some big time pt. It won't surprise me. He's a great interview that's for sure.

busman64 (Jun 24, 2005 7:52:30 PM)
Gary why hasnt there been much talk about Aaron Browns recruitment he seems to be a top prospect

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 7:52:30 PM)
Because it's hard to get any straight or open answers. They've wanted to create a smokescreen obviously and they have succeeded at it. I think in the end...he will be a Buckeye...so will Smith. Just speculation based on things I've heard...even today.

busman64 (Jun 24, 2005 7:53:10 PM)
One last question here, Who steps in to play Quarterback after Smith and Zwick are gone?

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 7:53:11 PM)
Rob Schoenhoft. I think this kid is a big time winner.

BuckeyeDave (Jun 24, 2005 7:54:10 PM)
How about a Bucknuts article on all of the Heiman hopefuls whose Heisman dreams have dies at the Horseshoe? Rivers from NC St. Gesser from Wazzu. And that QB from Texas Tech all come to mind. There have got to be others!

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 7:54:10 PM)
I'll pass that along too BuckeyeDave, I think Vincent Young's Heisman dream will get squashed this year as well.

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 7:58:23 PM)
Some observations from camp while any other questions come trickling in. I liked what I saw from Smith, Derrell Johnson, Tom Becker, Myles Spearman - RB from NJ, Chris Fox was there but I didn't bet to eyeball him, the staff looked to have some interest in this Joshua Ogylsby kid from Wisconsin and there was a little guy from Middletown name Zack Davis that JT couldn't help bragging about. He's not OSU material but JT was introducing him to Mark Snyder and JD Burkhart (sp?) from Akron and others there. He had the fastest 40-yard dash at 4.39 seconds.

4thand14 (Jun 24, 2005 8:00:49 PM)
Gary, do you think Amos would be better suited to play CB instead of WR? Seems to me that OSU always has excellent receivers. After containing (I know he was injured a little bit) Mario M. in the 2nd half of the North-South Classic, I think WR might not be his best position. I'll see if I can remember most of what I wrote on the previous Q. if I/we have enough time.

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 8:00:49 PM)
Hi 4th and 14...I messed up that other question you sent in...if you could resend it that would be great. But yes I'm thinking that Amos just might be headed for the secondary if his performance in the NS game is any indication. He was the South defensive MVP... nice job he seemingly did on MM after his first two big catches.

buckgrad (Jun 24, 2005 8:02:22 PM)
anything new on rogers and USC?

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 8:02:22 PM)
Do you mean Fred Davis of Toledo Rogers and USC? If that's the one then I would have to say I don't think that will be happening. As much as he might want to...if he does...I think Fred Davis is likely to stay put at USC.

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 8:06:38 PM)
Nate Davis, Rudy Kirbus, and Miles Schlichter led the QB contingent today. Davis is put together pretty well...nice arm. Kirbus looked really good at times I thought. Schlichter is bound to catch someone's eye and get a decent offer. One QB that surprised me a bit was the one from Akron Garfield. His name escapes me right now but he threw the ball well. Garfield might be chucking the ball some in the air even with Chris Wells. Hartline is coming in tomorrow.

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 8:08:51 PM)
Chris Wells is supposed to be in tomorrow. Rose, Small, Browning and Nelson and Adams I believe are suppose to be in tomorrow from Glenville. Jahmal Brown, who I like a lot, is supposed to be in tomorrow. Among others.

4thand14 (Jun 24, 2005 8:12:33 PM)
In the Q. you hit the wrong button on on your answer, I was upset that Ty Sutton never got an OSU offer and how I thought, from what I've seen of him in person (I went to the N-S Classic last Sat. at Crew Stadium) and on video and TV highlights, I thought he was one of the best HS football players at the RB position in Ohio HS history. I asked if you thought that Mo Wells, the only small back that OSU offered in the class of 2005, was better than Sutton? I don't think he is. I also wrote about how it was a shame that MM and Sutton will be playing their college ball elsewhere. I know OSU never had a prayer, similar to Woodson, with Mario M. I think Sutton is a cross between Barry Sanders and Carlos Snow with his running style--thick, powerful legs that keep driving and he is hard to bring down. I also wrote how Boone was awesome in the N-S game as well and could play very early at OSU, and that Jammin' Jamario O'Neal should start out at safety and work his way to corner in his Buck career. He got burnt in the

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 8:12:33 PM)
There it is. I too was upset about Sutton not getting an offer but I was over that a long time ago. The thing that really made me mad is that they never even sniffed his direction. What more could he do. He wants to prove them wrong now. Good for him. He's a great looking running back. I would say he's right up there with Reecie and Ray Williams in my book, as far as the best high school running backs that I've had the pleasure of seeing in person. Danny Herron could be the next one after Chris Wells this year. Wells is a stud as we all know.

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 8:13:56 PM)
Funny story then I'll get back to the question....there was a coach in WHAC today that came up to me asked me who the top player in Ohio was this year....I thought for a moment because I figured he was testing me and then I said ... Chris Wells. He laughed and said ...I guess that was a dumb question. Then we discussed other players.

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 8:17:05 PM)
I too think MM is a great talent. He's a game day talent and that might not wash even at Michigan. He needs to refine his skills but his abilities are obvious. The way he made Stubbs miss him on the first touchdown is a typical MM play. He's one of the best with the ball in the open field after the catch. His ability to make you miss is uncanny. I like Boone a whole lot but I truly wouldn't mind seeing him redshirt. But he may be good enough to start by midseason. He's awesome. J.O. is a big time talent in the secondary as well. I still think he's a safety but I'll just be happy seeing him on the field next year. It's really shaping up to be a really good recruiting class.

Mo Wells (Jun 24, 2005 8:17:36 PM)
Hi everyone

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 8:17:36 PM)
Hi back!

4thand14 (Jun 24, 2005 8:21:57 PM)
With all of the great players Matta is, and will be, bringing in, do you think OSU has a shot at O.J. and B. Walker? Their best friend, K. Ellis, says all three want to go to the same college together and doesn't list OSU on the schools he is interested in?

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 8:21:57 PM)
I'm not a big basketball guy because I'm so involved with football, but I think Mayo would have definitely have been a goner to the NBA without college. Now I guess he has to go somewhere for a year if I heard the ruling correctly. Why not go to OSU? I like all three of those guys. I really do. Saw them in the state tourney. I'm sure Matta will work hard on them. I want Dallas Lauderdale and he likes the Buckeyes. I spoke to him at his high school recently and he plays with Lighty on his AAU team. I'll barrow him for a year. He'll only be a junior next year like Mayo and those guys.

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 8:25:21 PM)
Any thing else. I was up and on the road early today so I could be down in Columbus in time. I'm going to go see the end of the Columbus Clippers game tonight and then be back at the WHAC early in the morning tomorrow. I have a graduation to go to back home so I'll only catch about a half of the session tomorrow. But I'll have photos put up of today and tomorrow probably tomorrow night. We have to work out the kinks here at the Columbus office for me to download pictures and put them on our web site. I can't seem to get my laptop to work here and I've tried to play around some with every time I'm down here.

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 8:27:24 PM)
So look for a couple of photo gallerys tomorrow night some time. Better late than never. I want to thank you guys that participated in the chat tonight and thank the people for reading the chat at a later time. I'm really looking forward to seeing some big time talent at the WHAC on Saturday. Have a great weekend. I just love this weather. Better than the cold any day.

4thand14 (Jun 24, 2005 8:30:01 PM)
What time is the N-S Classic replay tomorrow on Fox Ohio? Also, Schoenhoft, who didn't have the best game in the N-S game, has struggled throughout his career with his completion %. Do you think he'll pan out for OSU? I don't see why he was highly recruited. Also, do you think Ray Williams will ever see the field for the Tol. Rockets?

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 8:30:01 PM)
I don't know what time. I really like Rob Schoenhoft and Ray Williams is in school because he has to be. He was mandated by the court to be in school and maintain some average or go to jail...if I'm not mistaken. I don't know if anybody will ever see him play again on the college level. But Toledo would be good for him if they let him play. I think OSU couldn't touch him if they wanted to.

garyhousteau (Jun 24, 2005 8:30:16 PM)
Thanks again ...I'm out!
