Chat Transcript - Gary Housteau

Gary Housteau stopped by Bucknuts club chat to talk today about recruiting and the OSU Senior Advanced Camp. Read on for a transcript.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 12:06:27 PM)
Hello's the top of the noon hour and I think we have plenty in the chat room right now to get things started. Feel free to start sending any questions my way that you think I might be able to handle.

Mike68 (Jun 29, 2005 12:09:35 PM)
Gary- Do you see Browning or Royce Adams of Glenville getting an offers from OSU and if so, how soon?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 12:09:35 PM)
Hi Mike68...thanks for sending in the first question to get us underway...from some of the people that I've been talking to, I really think there is some genuine interest in both of these two guys from Glenville but I think the evaluations are still ongoing at this time. I've always liked Browning and Adams is a really good two way athlete. He's going to surprise everybody how good he will be on both sides of the ball at Glenville this year. So they're both still in the mix but I don't know what OSU is thinking and when.

edbuck51 (Jun 29, 2005 12:11:47 PM)
Did you get a chance to see Henton at camp? Do you agree he was the best QB there?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 12:11:47 PM)
I just got to see him throwing around the ball some before I had to leave on Saturday. I missed him doing anything meaningful because I was outside with the DBs before they went to lunch. But from talking with some of the people who watched him work out, it seems as though he was one of the best at the camp.

buckgrad (Jun 29, 2005 12:13:31 PM)
Afternoon Gary, is there going to be some more follow up on the new QB commit Henton coming up soon? Did he come out of nowhere, never really heard much of him till recently. Is he a top 25 national QB? Thanks

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 12:13:31 PM)
Hi buckgrad, I'm relatively new to the Henton story myself. As you probably know, I'm an Ohio guy first and foremost and I only start to focus on OOS kids when I know the mutual interest level is very high. I'm anxious to learn much about him just as you are. First impressions of him on Saturday were very favorable however.

Mike68 (Jun 29, 2005 12:16:44 PM)
What do you know about Chichester's situation. Does he have an offer from OSU and how high is he on the Bucks. he's one of the few in-state guys that there seems to be very little news on what his situation is.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 12:16:44 PM)
Mike I talked to Chichester when he first reported to camp on Saturday and he told me he wants to play wide receiver and he still wants to play both sports in college. He really looks great to be honest with you and his potential has to be off the charts. He likes Ohio State of course but I don't believe he has an offer at this time. I didn't ask him though when I spoke to him. Very intriguing prospect I would say.

noscrubstud (Jun 29, 2005 12:21:09 PM)
Conley and Oden are going to be officially ares. Details on who you suspect we fill this class out with. We're 4/5 of the way to having the Thad 5. Who is the fifth guy? And is there a sixth. What can you tell us on the situation with Raymar Morgan, Thad Young, Harangody, and Webster, and is there any others in the picture at the four position?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 12:21:09 PM)
Hi noscrubstud....I'm not ashamed to say that basketball is not my main cup of tea but I'm starting to get into it a whole lot now. I think Kyle and Steve, for the most part on this site do a wonderful job of covering hoops. Steve is in Indiana probably right now awaiting the 2 p.m. presser. When I first heard the term "Thad Five" back during hoop season, Thad Young was the fifth member that I had heard of. Don't know much about him but the name sure fits. I liked Raymar in the state tourney but he was in foul trouble in the semifinals and I didn't see enough of his game. He would be a good fifth guy to round out the team. Don't know much at all about the other two guys you mentioned sorry. But one guy I really like for the following year is Dallas Lauderdale from Solon...and Jon Diebler from Upper Sandusky. I'm starting to really get into HS hoops.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 12:21:28 PM)
The questions are coming in great...keep it up...thanks!

Mike68 (Jun 29, 2005 12:24:49 PM)
Do you think that they will only end up taking Wells this year and wait and take two backs next year when the in-state crop will be especially fertile?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 12:24:49 PM)
Mike I really think OSU is going to net 2 RB's in this class. Depth at that position has been an ongoing situation that needs to be rectified in a big way. Just the flat out number of legitimate candidates to play the position needs to increase. So I do think Ohio State takes two in the end. And the junior to be class is very fertile at the top at running back. I can't decide if I like Danny Herron or Jordan Mabin better. I know Duane likes Torrence, so do I, but I see him more as an DB at the next level. Danny Herron is the name to watch out for. Terrific back who plays really strong competition.

noscrubstud (Jun 29, 2005 12:28:47 PM)
Antonio Henton, is he a 3 star player? As far as rankings are concerned, when they are released entirely, will the rest just be 3 star and down

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 12:28:47 PM)
noscrubstud...I have to admit that I'm not a rankings guys or ratings guy so I really don't know or even care if Henton is 3 star player. I played four years of college football and I watch guys and I just get a feel one way or another if they have what it takes to be special at the next level. The thing that kills me the most about these ratings are that they go up and down based on the offers received or don't have. That's like governing by polls. I think you should rank guys regardless of what offers they get or don't get. That's just my take on it. So I'm not the guy to ask any rankings questions.

edbuck51 (Jun 29, 2005 12:33:14 PM)
With the quality of OSU's early commits, and the names we seem to have a reasonable shot at, do you think this class could turn out as well as the '02 class?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 12:33:14 PM)
ed as I've said before any class that starts with Wells and Homan has a good chance to be a special class. Obviously adding a Smith and a Brown would do wonders. Henton and Coleman certainly help. Ballard will be more valuable at the end of his career than in the beginning. A Reuland will help the class. I think Lyons coming on board would be a good thing. It's got potential to be a really good class. Right now it's too much of a hypothetical to compare to the '02 class with only five pieces assembled but the potential is really good. Thaddeus Young, if he gets his academics in order, will be another nice piece. Rose and Small are even better than they're national rankings indicate. And so on.

buckgrad (Jun 29, 2005 12:35:29 PM)
Gary, do you think that there is a SEC bias over at Rivals and maybe a midwest bias at Scout? Top 100 rankings are really different in comparison.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 12:35:29 PM)
Again buck...I know rankings are what they are but I don't pay enough attention to them to have any opinion on them. I really think they hurt some kids just as much as they help highlight the obvious. Leaving some worthy kid name off of any list because of bias or just because he wasn't evaluated properly makes the whole rankings thing something that I have no interest in.

Palmer (Jun 29, 2005 12:38:56 PM)
connor smith has set a committment date, do you have any idea when that may be?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 12:38:56 PM)
Hi Palmer...I believe it's Aug. 1. Can someone please inform me if that is incorrect. I'm looking forward to that Colerain and Texas game on Sept. 9 at Crew Stadium. Smith could possibly be a Buckeye by that time. That's certainly my take on it. And Steve mentioned that Aaron Brown is a three horse race, but I've been told it's now a two-horse race between OSU and Florida. And in the end...I'm hearing that its' going to be the home team.

rbuck (Jun 29, 2005 12:42:26 PM)
Hi Gary, On Conner Smith, Shouldn't this be a similar situation to Boren @ Michigan? Seems like the OSU ties and being in the state of Ohio should make this a no brainer. What's taking so long? Does his father have any ill feelings to OSU?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 12:42:26 PM)
hi rbuck...from what I've been privy to all along, the dad has been pro OSU the entire time. He's just letting his son have the chance to experience what it's like to be recruited by schools like Ohio and Michigan. All signs, almost the entire time I've been tracking this, have been very positive toward OSU. I think he will confirm as much on Aug. 1. Believe me, I've heard some really positive things this past weekend regarding Connor Smith. It looks really really good.

ncbuckeye (Jun 29, 2005 12:46:12 PM)
Good afternoon Gary. With Henton's verbal do the Buckeye's still go after another QB in this year's class? (my gut says no, but what about Hartline's brother?)

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 12:46:12 PM)
Hi ncbuckeye...I have a good reason to think that Ohio State will not offer an Ohio quarterback this year to go along with Henton but I still think that Hartline could be a late addition to the class depending on how the rest of it fills out. I know that he will try to be patient until told otherwise by OSU so the longer Hartline doesn't commit to anybody, the better his chances are of getting an OSU offer. Becuase if he knows that there will be no offer, and they won't or can't string him along, then he will be comfortable accepting another offer. I heard from ND people yesterday that they wouldn't be surprised if he gets an offer today. And they already have a top guy from Mechanicsburg Pa. in the fold. We will see.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 12:46:55 PM)
The number of questions in que are really overwhelming ... please be patient with me.

Guest (Jun 29, 2005 12:49:55 PM)
Give us the names of some players who left camp last weekend who are close to committing.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 12:49:55 PM)
Buckeye2005 asks about some players that are close to committing after camp. That's hard to answer because the ones who have an offer and know they'll be coming on board are going to wait and take all their visits and some of the guys who would commit on the spot like a Ryan Palmer for instance, he loves the Buckeyes, have to be patient and wait for an offer that may never come. I don't see any commitment being imminent at this point.

buckgrad (Jun 29, 2005 12:52:00 PM)
Do you think UM is still the team to beat for Mixon? They just verbaled another LB, think they are hurting their chances?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 12:52:00 PM)
I haven't seen enough of Mixon to get excited about him. I'm not saying that he's not worthy of an OSU or Michigan offer, I just haven't had a good enough feel on him to comment either way. I would guess that Michigan is still the team to beat...don't know.

ToledoBucknutty (Jun 29, 2005 12:55:03 PM)
Sounds like Rose had a great weekend....What do you sense about him? Any other commits coming up soon in your estimation? I am excited about Henton....

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 12:55:03 PM)
Well unofficially OSU has seven commitments when you count Rose and Small. Both guys are top notch young men and both guys continue to perform well at camps and both guys will take three or four official visits and both guys will be Buckeyes next February! About Henton, I'm excited after seeing him as well. No other ones coming down the pike that I'm aware of or expecting at this time.

buckeyenole (Jun 29, 2005 12:59:34 PM)
What LB's fill out this class? And which LB's looked good at camp? Also, how much longer do we wait on Aaron Brown with the good showing by the other OL at camp?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 12:59:34 PM)
Hi Buckeyenole...Edds didn't get an offer and I don't believe that Becker got an offer either and those were two of the biggest names at LB in camp for both days. I was really surprised about the lack of studs at linebacker in camp. Of course Homan was there but I'm not counting him. I saw a lot of good looking DB's and a couple of D linemen as well but not many really good looking LBs. I'm sure the OSU staff will continue to be patient with Brown but I'm sure they'd like to get a yes or no from him out of the sooner rather than later. I also would bet that they would have loved to have seen him work out at camp like Smith did. Smith just made me more interested than ever in him after watching him work out at camp.

Guest (Jun 29, 2005 1:02:27 PM)
Paris Edwards, does he have a good shot at an ohio state offer? At the safety spot.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 1:02:27 PM)
noscrubstud asks about Peris Edwards and I didn't see or meet him at camp if he was there. I would think that he would have wanted to be there but I don't know if he was or not. I would think he is a guy that the staff knows about but I don't have any idea of their level of interest in him. I'm sure Coach Rios is doing his part to make sure Edwards gets consideration from the OSU staff. But he's a common name that comes up in the recruiting circles.

Buckeye2005 (Jun 29, 2005 1:08:11 PM)
Does the signing (or at least getting the verbal) of Henton over a guy like Hartline signal a permanant change of offensive philosophy for OSU? We all expected the "Shot-Ginn" offense this season and next with Troy SMith at QB, but by signing Henton it looks like we are going with this type of offense for good.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 1:08:11 PM)
The only permanent philosophy over the next two years is Ted Ginn Jr. I guess people have already forgotten how horrible this offense was, the subject of ridicule on national TV, until TGII got more involved. Ginn makes Holmes better, Gonzolez better, he would make the TE's better if they were ever thrown to, and he certainly made Troy Smith a better quarterback. Ginn made the offense better period. Expect continued greatness and diversity from this offense in the next two years minimum. No guarantees beyond that.

DaytonDunbarBuckeye (Jun 29, 2005 1:10:48 PM)
What do you think about the Scout ratings for Ohioans? There's 13 guys in the top 100 and that's not including Rose.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 1:10:48 PM)
Hi DaytonDunbarBuckeye...thanks for sending Cook to Ohio State. No disrespect intended but I give a hill of beans about any rankings. I know how good Chris Wells is because I've seen him play numerous times...I don't need any rankings to tell me that. (I also felt that same way about Sutton and still do). I know it's a big thing for both Scout and even our site with Ohio High magazine so it is what it is. Take for whatever you take it for. You still got to perform on the field no matter where you're ranked.

edbuck51 (Jun 29, 2005 1:15:41 PM)
What are your thoughts on RB? Wells = Awesome. What about another? Would you only look at another blue chip, or go with a role player? I'm sure they have to be a little careful as to who they pursue. If they get another stud, will C.Wells take it the right way? He seems like a team player.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 1:15:41 PM)
ed I don't think you could ever get an Aldridge or a McCoy when you already have a Wells on board so I'll go right to my comfort zone and take another solid back that is going to get overlooked for whatever reason and bring him on board. Guys like DeLone Carter, Anthony Elzy and my favorite of them all, Jahmal Brown should all get a serious look because all three of these guys are pure running backs that aren't going to go bigtime because of their size. But they all can play. Brown is my Tyrell Sutton of this year. I'm going to beat on his drum for as long and as loud as I possibly can because this kid is a football player...period. Carter had a really large game against Garfield and Wells in the playoff last year and Elzy had two 400 plus yard games last year. I like Lance Smith a lot but he has some academic work to do and I don't think OSU will go hard after him. Keep an eye on Jahmal Brown.

mjw1200 (Jun 29, 2005 1:17:48 PM)
does Henton change Hartlines offer situation?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 1:17:48 PM)
Hi mjw1200...I would say no that because OSU wasn't looking to offer an instate kid from the options they had prior to Henton's commitment. My gut feeling is that Hartline may be added late to the class if he chooses to hold on that long. He's going to have a huge season so that will bode well for him if any school is still considering him. If Hartline is patient, he could get an OSU down the line.

Palmer (Jun 29, 2005 1:20:29 PM)
I noticed when you look at a players profile that you guys have added a players strengths and weaknesses, I just wanted to commend you guys on that, I think thats great

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 1:20:29 PM)
Palmer thanks to Steve's tireless effort, this is the only site that any Buckeye fan needs to go. I can't speak for any other site, but we do our best to cover it all. I think it's pretty obvious where the serious Ohio State fan needs to be dialed in to. Smile!

Guest (Jun 29, 2005 1:25:49 PM)
If you were Ohio state, what in state players would you take at this point? Name em all...

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 1:25:50 PM) instate list might look like this...Rose, Small, Browning, Parris (no shot at), Cumberland, Gibson, Smith, Brown, Thomas or Palmer, Chichester, Williams, Nagy, Hartline. And then I'd offer Ben Martin, Danny Herron and Devon Torrence early for next year. And then wait to see how the rest of the clas this year fills out.

JimC (Jun 29, 2005 1:26:27 PM)
Hi Gary, Any updates on bringing back Conley. I miss his insight, especially during recruiting.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 1:26:27 PM)
Hi JimC...I think Steve says he may be back sometime in August for another round of contributions.

g0d1am (Jun 29, 2005 1:29:00 PM)
Gary, Have you had a chance to see Antonio in person? If so, Is he better than the big 3 QB's from Ohio?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 1:29:00 PM)
Hi g0d1am...met him for the first time on Saturday and he passed the look test no problem. Nothing imposing in any way but nothing scrawny looking about him either. You have to remember that these kids just finished their junior year so they have some physical maturing yet to do. I just saw him throwing the ball around a little but nothing competitve so I can't compare him to the three instate QB's. It looks like Hartline is really the only one in Ohio that's going to get any major major offers at this point.

edbuck51 (Jun 29, 2005 1:32:51 PM)
On the subject of rankings, Scout has Tilley ranked ahead of Brown. Do you know enough about both of them to comment? Is Tilley just not a possibility at OSU? It doesn't sound like these camps have much in common.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 1:32:51 PM)
ed...Tilley is not even in the realm of OSU's world so that's a moot discussion. To be honest with you, the thing that I liked most about Tilley is that he's 6-7 with a long reach and plays basketball and he's a left tackle. But he's involved in mostly a passing situation and I'm not sure he's the road-grader type OSU might be looking for. Again with these rankings I don't know how to comment. I really need to see a guy in person before I'm willing to comment on him. I haven't seen either of these two guys in person.

Buckeye2005 (Jun 29, 2005 1:35:20 PM)
Speaking of Lyons, I'm hearing that given the choice he'd rather go to Miami because of our depth at WR. What are you hearing?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 1:35:21 PM)
Wes is one of the recruits that I know pretty well and that may be true but only because he knows the real depth at receiver at OSU so well. In the end...I see him going to school where his big brother is unless Devon is totally a non option at receiver this coming year. I like Devon a lot so I don't see that happening but if it does, it could send Wes to Miaimi. In the end I say OSU wins out.

Guest (Jun 29, 2005 1:37:43 PM)
Do you think, based on his play in the N/S game, that Lawrence Wilson will be the game changing, off-edge DE this defense is missing?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 1:37:44 PM)
Buckeyenole asks about Wilson and I still say that he has no idea how good he can actually be yet on defensive. He has so many natural tools and they're starting to come to the surface only now. He has the potential skills to dominate on the outside. He has ridiculous speed and quickness to play his position but he's still learning. His upside is sky high. I look for him or Worthington, I hope not both, to get into the rotation at end this year...sooner rather than later.

labsbeabmm (Jun 29, 2005 1:40:30 PM)
I think that Lyons is Miami bound despite his brother being at OSU. He has commented several times on his desire to play early and about the depth chart at receiver at OSU.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 1:40:30 PM)
You know labsbeabmn...if I only read some of those same comments as you have I too might formulate that opinion, but I've talk to Wes and his dad so many times informally and off the record, that I tend to think it's not as bad as you might perceive it to be. Ideally Wes might really love to go Miami, but realistically, I think he'll end up at Ohio State. If the tone of the conversations change in the future...I'll surely indicate that like they have in the past with guys like Rico McCoy and Justin Boren for instance. But right now I say Ohio State.

Buckeye2005 (Jun 29, 2005 1:41:40 PM)
Where Does OSU stand with Micah Johnson?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 1:41:40 PM)
I saw Micah Johnson in San Antonio at that combine in January and I was really impressed. I really don't see Ohio State with a legit shot. But I have no inside knowledge of that being so.

redondo (Jun 29, 2005 1:44:14 PM)
Hi Gary - I thought Plamer was to hear from ND by today. Any word?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 1:44:14 PM)
Hi redondo...I was told that Hartline would hear from ND today and this person who is connected well to ND told me he wouldn't be surprised if Hartline got an offer from ND from what he was hearing. Palmer on the other, I put a call into him and Hartline this morning and neither have called me back so I'm guessing they're working out somewhere, it might be Wisconsin. I talked to Palmer's parents at OSU's camp and I'm rooting for Palmer even more than I ever have now. But if he doesn't get an OSU offer, he'll have some school that will be more than happy to get him.

buckgrad (Jun 29, 2005 1:46:36 PM)
Gary, is it your feeling that Haw is not going to miss any game time due to his run in with the law?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 1:46:36 PM)
Well I have a source who told me that will be the case but I guess we will have to find that out. It's going to be an internal situation and Haw might even dress for the first game and not be allowed to play. But I would tend to think he'll get his punishment internally, and pay in a physical way, but he'll get some reps at Miami. He has to really. He has to be game ready for Texas. Haw doesn't have the game experience that Pittman has.

redondo (Jun 29, 2005 1:48:44 PM)
Hi Gary - Where is your worry meter over Henton pulling a Bemoll later on and leaving the Buckeyes high and dry in the QB sweepstakes?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 1:48:44 PM)
Negative...don't see it happening. His high school coach was quite honest with Steve and I on Saturday. He said Georgia had their guy, Auburn already had their guy and when OSU showed an interest in him, he showed a sincere interest back. Enough to get to the point where it is today. And then talking with a few players who chatted with's all good for Ohio State. No cold feet with Henton. No runaway quarterbacks here.

Guest (Jun 29, 2005 1:50:02 PM)
Do you believe programs recruit a guy one year that is a marginal big time talent with the hope that a underclassman that is super will follow.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 1:50:02 PM)
From Buck35...never! Ships are too valuable to gamble them away like that. Never!

Buckeye2005 (Jun 29, 2005 1:52:37 PM)
Gary, I find it ahrd to believe that OSU offers Hartline. That would give them 6 QB's on scholarship for the 2006 season. I just can't believe ANY school would waste 6 scholarships on quaterbacks. Not to mention the QB Chris Smith, who I believe will be a junior this season, is said to already be the best QB in Ohio and OSU will certainly be after him for the class of '07.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 1:52:37 PM)
You're probably right and I've already said that I have very good inside reason to believe that will be the case. But when Hartline has a monster season this year, fans are going to clamoring 'why didn't we offer Hartline in the first place.' That's just my humble opinion. The chances are pretty good that he's going to light it up this year. So we will see.

BuckeyeDave (Jun 29, 2005 1:54:22 PM)
Gary - where did you play football in college?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 1:54:22 PM)
Adrian College, Division III, middle guard. I truly played football for the love of the game or I would have went to OSU and been the editor of Bucknuts instead of Steve right now...I'm older than he is! Smile!

Guest (Jun 29, 2005 1:55:56 PM)
Gary, what are you hearing about Jerome Jones?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 1:55:56 PM)
hooterz asks about Jerome Jones of Youngstown Ursuline. All that I can say is he has some work to do academically but he's a major talent at LB and or Tight end.

Guest (Jun 29, 2005 1:57:05 PM)
Who is going to have a great senior year and suprise everyone wiht an OSU offer?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 1:57:06 PM)
noscrubstud ask this question...maybe a guy like Royce Adams at Glenville via St. Edward. His name is coming up more and more. He was working with the DB's in camp and was being shown a lot of attention along with Coleman.

mjw1200 (Jun 29, 2005 1:59:53 PM)
with four D-Lineman last year and a couple the year before, and a good feeling about rose this year, how many more d-lineman do you think they go for, and do you think they will only go after that elite type national recruit, or do you think later we see nagy or some other ohio recruit get an offer

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 1:59:53 PM)
Hi really want to see Nagy in person this year mjw. I think he could be that defensive tackle wildcard that can play offensive line also. I'm into rose in a big way at defensive tackle but he fancies himself as an end. He can play inside. No fat at all on this guy. I liked the Dexter Larimore kid, the wrestler from Aldridge's school. He shook my hand on Saturday and almost broke it. Smile!

osufan26 (Jun 29, 2005 2:04:01 PM)
Sorry I'm late Gary....based on the osu camp this past week, who has impressed the coaches into earning a scholarship.. I heard the names of three OL who maybe be on their radar now.. Bill Nagy, Bryant Browning and Joe Thomas.. What are their chances?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 2:04:01 PM)
good question osufan 26...All three guys did well for themselves as did Palmer from what I was told. Nagy is the wildcard guy cause he can play both sides of the ball well. I think he could end up with an OSU offer as fast as any of the others. If I have to give a list of first to last of who is likely to get an offer...and I have my reasons...I'll go with Nagy, Browning, Palmer and Thomas in that order. Keep in mind I've liked Thomas as long or longer than most people have, he just has some work to do in the classroom yet. But he's really solid out there.

Gary, I'm shocked that Jeff Cumberland and Josh Chichester both made it into the top 100..Especially Chichester..Do you think OSU will end up with one or both of these guys?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 2:05:24 PM)
I think they've both made it on physical potential. Both have freakish qualities to them. I really like Cumberland a whole lot, but I tend to think for one reason or another, that Chichester has a better shot than Cumberland.

Do you think we lose Conner Smith to Michigan? I hope not.. He has a huge upside..

Gary, Is Devon Torrence gonna be looked at as a DB or RB.. I saw him once last year and I think he might be a better suited to play RB or WR in college..

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 2:08:14 PM)
Some birdie, whos opinion I respect immensely, who saw him at OSU's camp, told me that Torrence is likely going to be a defensive back at the next level. I've heard great things from Duane and Bill about Torrence as an RB, I liked him in person, but I've never seen him play live to formulate my own opinion. I think he can play many different positions so its yet to be determined.

What is the word on Taylor Price? I guess he ran a sub 4.3 at camp.. That is blazing!

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 2:09:40 PM)
4.29...I was there. I guarantee his name is on many more boards than previously. The coaches form all teams that were there were talking about Price and Zach Davis of Middletown who ran a 4.39.

Gary, how much access do you actually have with Tressel and the staff? DO you get a chance to talk with them often? When and if you do, do they talk openly about potential recruits or is that something they are not allowed to do?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 2:14:21 PM)
I can't really answer that because they would probably have to shoot me. But remember that I am the only reporter/writer/now photographer that goes back with Jim Tressel for many years prior to OSU. But hypothetically speaking if I were to have a conversation with someone like a Jim Tressel there would be open discussion back and forth about recruits in general and in specific. But I would never tell if there is/was. Smile!

Palmer (Jun 29, 2005 2:15:27 PM)
I saw O'neal in the Ohio classic and his closing speed is insane! also I talked to a friend of mine close to the team and they say that in 7 on 7 drills he plays with a nastiness and is hard to get away from. I think that he has a legitimate shot at starting, what do you think

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 2:15:27 PM)
I don't think he will start, especially right out of the gate, but he will play because he's special. Even Ginn didn't find his niche until the Wisky game and beyond.

Mike68 (Jun 29, 2005 2:16:03 PM)
Gary- Do you have any news on Fred Davis and a) if he will be leaving USC, b) is he serious about OSU if he does leave and c) Would Tress be seriously intrested in him

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 2:16:04 PM)
I don't see it happening from what I know.

Buckeye4Life25 (Jun 29, 2005 2:17:05 PM)
Hello everyone!! This is my first time on this chat! If it hasn't been discussed already, Conley & Oden have now officially given their verbal to OSU. I am hoping for big things.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 2:17:05 PM)
Welcome Buckeye4Life25...great news thanks for bringing it to the chat. I'm hoping for big things as well.

Are you surprised at the lack of offers for Ohio's top quarterbacks? Harline; Schlister; Davis; etal. Were they overrated?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 2:19:31 PM)
hi I don't think they're overrated at all. I am a bit surprised but it's still early in one sense when school have pecking orders to wait on especially at the QB position.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2005 2:21:50 PM)
