Hello everyone...breaking news tonight sorry I'm late. I want to thank Duane Long and Steve Helwagen for breaking this story about the Ginn College Prepartory Academy. I just posted it on the front page for those of you who want to catch up. More details will follow. Sorry I'm late.
robochef (Jul 14, 2005 9:27:23 PM)
Hey Gary! Do you think that in the long run the final RB schollie will come down to Ramsey and Freison? In other words which ever one is the comeback POY.
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 9:27:23 PM)
Hi robochef...thanks for the first question of the night. Both Jacob Ramsey and Bruce Frieson will be solid comeback player of the year candidates as you mentioned but I think it will be quite a task for either to get an OSU offer. But you never know. I really look for both of these two young men to have great seasons. Ramsey is really a specimen.
busman64 (Jul 14, 2005 9:28:31 PM)
Gary, Connor Smith is he a buckeye?
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 9:28:31 PM)
Hi busman64...obviously we don't use the 'L' word anymore but from all indications it certainly looks that way. It will be another great addition to this solid class that is under construction.
osubuck1 (Jul 14, 2005 9:30:44 PM)
Royce Adams, how underated is he?
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 9:30:44 PM)
Hi osubuck1...that's a touchy one for me to handle. I saw Adams on more than a couple of occasions last year and he never really stood out in the context of any game. I was aware of him but he never made me say wow and I saw Ed's play quite a few times. I don't think he's underrated by any means.
Guest (Jul 14, 2005 9:32:02 PM)
Gary, I'm looking at preseason polls and we could knock off the 1,2 and 3 teams in the country, that would be a well deserved NC huh?
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 9:32:03 PM)
ikosufan1 asks a national championship question and indeed if all of your premise there should hold up throughout the season than that would definitely make OSU worthy of being a national champion. Sure. Smile!
robochef (Jul 14, 2005 9:33:27 PM)
Great pic of Ginn Gary...LOL
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 9:33:27 PM)
Thanks robochef...this story was developing within an hour of my chat and I had to whip together everything I could in a short amount of time. I have some a real good Ginn Photo I'll add later to the story. It's truly a great story if things work out as intended.
osubuck1 (Jul 14, 2005 9:36:01 PM)
who do you feel commits before the start of the season?
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 9:36:01 PM)
Wow that's a tough question osubuck1 because other than Connor Smith, I don't know if anyone else is really in position to issue a commitment because most of the pending offers are OOS and they're in no hurry. Maybe Rueland from MVHS could be one possibility. I don't see another OL committing until during the season. A few Ohio guys would on the spot but they'll still be waiting on getting an offer.
busman64 (Jul 14, 2005 9:37:07 PM)
good lord with only 400 students, theyd win the state in everything, right
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 9:37:07 PM)
Probably hand-picked by TG Sr. himself. But academics will be a main focus of the school charter. What will it do to Glenville??
Guest (Jul 14, 2005 9:38:50 PM)
We're short defensive tackles for 2006. Any chance of Maupin returning?
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 9:38:50 PM)
Hi Santiago, it's really not fair to the individual to speak in any negative fashion because we don't all of the facts but I will answer your question by saying it doesn't look that way.
robochef (Jul 14, 2005 9:42:52 PM)
Who are some potential FB prospects out there that OSU could take...Also, whatever happenned to Matt Schumaker from last year, did he sign somewhere?
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 9:42:52 PM)
Robochef Shumaker played for the South squad in the NS game from Delphos St. Johns and I'm not sure if he went to a MAC school or what. I haven't really seen any solid candidates at fullback come across my radar yet at least in state.
busman64 (Jul 14, 2005 9:45:28 PM)
Gary, is there an aj hawk type player on osu's radar, that isnt rated very highly but can flat out play.
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 9:45:28 PM)
Sure...I would say Tommy Becker from Wayzata High School in MN. Same school as James Laurinaitis. Becker is actually the crazy man between the two LBs and Laurinaitis dad was one of the Road Warriors. He ran a real slow 40 at OSU's camp but he was nursing an injury. He's a tackling machine and would love to come to Ohio State. He was on Sports Illustrated's regional defense all-star team last week.
robochef (Jul 14, 2005 9:48:21 PM)
How about that Armand Robinson, he looks like a late season offer but seems to be a good one. What is your opinion of him?
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 9:48:21 PM)
I watched Robinson real good at the 7-on-7 passing camp at Dublin Coffman High School the morning of the NS game and I liked what I saw of him. Very quick, athletic and aggressive. I haven't seen him with the pads on yet so I can't comment extensively on him but he did pass the first impression look test. Good looking prospect.
Leroy24 (Jul 14, 2005 9:50:46 PM)
Hello Gary. Lets say the buckeyes go undefeated. Would the win over Texas ( if Texas wins 9 or 10 games) get us a spot in the rose bowl in the case of three undefeated teams or more?
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 9:50:46 PM)
Hi Leroy24, welcome to the chat. Steve is really the master mind when it comes to figuring out all of those scenarios but I venture to guess and say yes..in a big way. Ohio State could have a few quality wins on their schedule including trips to Ann Arbor and Penn State that could aid the cause tremendously. Ohio State needs to beat Texas and root for them to win a few games (i.e. Oklahoma).
murphy98 (Jul 14, 2005 9:54:13 PM)
Gary, Last year it appeared that the Bucks were not making great changes during the game (second half Marshall running all over us) on D early in the year. With the September schedule being pretty tough this year with Iowa and Texas. Do you think another change in Dcordinators is going to hurt us again early . I am not saying Fickell is in over his head but its some big time pressure for a first year d cord. to take a team on a national championship run. Your thoughts.
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 9:54:13 PM)
Hi murphy98...I'm a big time believer in this defense that will be spearheaded by Hawk and Carpenter and Salley and Youboty and Pitcock and Kudla and Whitner and Everett and on and on...so I have a lot of faith in their performance no matter who is their leader. I'm sure they'll get the x's and o's right, Jim Heacock is a veteran coach, and the talent will take over. I also heard from "someone who knows" that John Kerr is looking really promising from an effort standpoint right now.
IrishBuck (Jul 14, 2005 9:58:00 PM)
Gary, Sorry if any of these questions are redundant, just joining the chat. Do you think Devon Lyons will choose tOSU despite our logjam at WR, and do you think that either Bill Nagy or Ryan Palmer will get offers. Thanks!
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 9:58:00 PM)
Hi IrishBuck...Yes I do think Wesley Lyons Jr. will choose Ohio State in the end but he is sincerely interested in Miami and even West Virginia. I think a breakout season by Devon Lyons will only help the cause as would another unproductive season hurt the cause. I really don't know how Nagy and Palmer sit with the staff but I think both are worthy of an offer. Nagy, being the more versatile of the two, would seemingly have a better shot than Palmer but Palmer is relatively new to the sport and his better seasons are three and fours years ahead of him.
robochef (Jul 14, 2005 10:02:45 PM)
With yourself beiing a former O-Lineman. What the heck is Bollman trying to do with the O-line. His teaching don't translate to well to OSU games yet when the players are in the NFL they turn out good. What is he doing right/wrong?
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 10:02:45 PM)
Robo I was a career middle guard in a 50 defense in my entire high school and college career...that being said...I watched Bollman instruct the OL at OSU's camp purposely and I have to say I came away very impressed from a logical point of view. He gave tremendous instruction to the kids about technique and expectations of OSU linemen...I was quite impressed. And he's like a big brother to the linemen that he is recruiting. They almost all speak highly of him so he must be well respected by his students. I still believe when you try to block 8 guys with 5 or 6 people than the chances of success are very diminished unless a Maurice Clarett type back is doing the running ... or a veteran Jonathan Wells type back.
buckguy (Jul 14, 2005 10:06:15 PM)
I am new to this so I'm not quite sure what go's on in here...but i'm curious....the texas deal is for 2 years...we're all looking forward to this year....we go there next year right? is there any clue as to why there are so many early verbals for next years texas team?
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 10:06:15 PM)
Hi buckguy welcome to the chat...No one ever said that Mac Brown couldn't recruit. And Texas football is Texas football. It's hard to believe he hasn't won in a big way with all of that talent that has gone thru that program in recent years. Yes the Buckeyes travel to Texas in 2006 on my birthday. And yes I'm really looking forward to the night game this year and even the high school game the night before. What a great weekend. I hope Bucknuts might consider sponsoring some kind of get together with everyone from our website.
robochef (Jul 14, 2005 10:08:44 PM)
At the Ginn Academy will he take stuidents who are already great in the classroom or will he take some "struggling" students who have potential to be both great on and off the field and try to turn them around like a Fred Lenix or Jamario O'Neal.
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 10:08:44 PM)
Ginn is all about taking struggling students and giving them opportunities. I don't think it will change. Struggling students that can play sports are an even better prospect. Smile! I would hope the students never get behind in the first place when they attend the Ginn Academy. You notice the name...Ginn College Preparatory Academy...emphasis on academics.
osubuck1 (Jul 14, 2005 10:12:44 PM)
Who do you feel we have the best shot at as far as high profile out of state guys?
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 10:12:44 PM)
ousbuck1...I'm one guy who looks at OOS players like a cherry on a hot fudge sundae. You don't necessarily need it to make a good sundae but it really adds something to it if you have one on there. I don't put much stock in OOS guys unless they have some real connection to OSU like a Maurice Wells or Ryan Williams for example. Maybe Ausberry would be a great addition but I just don't see him making the move across country with USC right there. Wes Lyons is a lot better than people are giving him credit for but again he has a brother at OSU. Ohio State needs to work hard in Western Pa. and keep that situation of two years ago going.
osubuck1 (Jul 14, 2005 10:15:51 PM)
Jeff Cumberland, will he receive an offer?
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 10:15:51 PM)
I tried to reach him yesterday for an update to no avail. He's really a freak and he's determined to be a wide receiver. I hope he gets the academics in order because he might be another Ernie Wheelwright type of talent. His speed for his size is incredible. And he doesn't fancy himself as a tightend but many people think he will end up there. If anyone could break the Brookhaven connection to Minnesota, it could be Ohio State but any offer might not come until after the first grading period if at all and by then he might be set on another school. If I had to guess I would say no.
labuck (Jul 14, 2005 10:19:25 PM)
How much recruiting, or maybe the better word is studying, of the juniors to be is being done now? Are they really only being looked at if they are at the same school as a senior recruit? Do the coaches wait mostly to see film of their junior season before looking at them?
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 10:19:25 PM)
Hi labuck...I think a lot of watching juniors to be began at the summer camps all across the country already. First of all, a lot of the top juniors were invited to camps based on their season they turned in a sophomore. Anymore, schools want to be the first one to have an offer to these top young players and stick with them in their junior and senior seasons. It's becoming earlier and earlier now. Pretty soon the soon-to-be-sophomores will be the ones getting all of the early attention. Coaches know the big time players earlier than you might think. That's why it's good to have a good instate network with the HS coaches like JT has for the most part.
Guest (Jul 14, 2005 10:23:15 PM)
Gary who is your breakout player for this season? I say Erik Haw on offense, and Tyler Everett on D
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 10:23:15 PM)
busman64 I would say that Haw almost wins by necessity because he will get a lot of carries by default. I think Pittman might be the one to have the breakout season. What a nice situation to have...two talented backs. I think Devon Lyons could have a breakout season if he gets the opportunities to catch the ball. On defense I think Tyler Everett has already arrived, he's a playmaker, and should really do well at corner. I also like Quinn Pitcock and David Patterson in a big way on defense to have a breakout season.
JohnnyBuckeye (Jul 14, 2005 10:26:44 PM)
Do you think the walk-on FB from Centerville will be a contributor, or do you see Dionte Johnson carrying the load at FB?
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 10:26:44 PM)
Hi JohnnyBuckeye...I believe you may be talking about touchdown Tommy and I don't think we should expect much of him in his first year. It might take some time for him to find his niche but he's a good one to have around. I like him from all that I know and have heard about him. Dionte Johnson is a football player and the staff obviously thought as much about him. Clearly Schnittker is a better runner than he is anythiing else and so I think Johnson could get most of the I-formation action this year at FB. And we will see the I-formation no matter how much everyone thinks Ohio State will be a spread team. Bread and Butter.
Guest (Jul 14, 2005 10:28:27 PM)
How many TE's are needed? Will they take another TE (Reuland?) because Ballard could play other positions and end up somewhere else?
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 10:28:27 PM)
Hi JT...Interesting...If Reuland wants to come on board than I say take him with open arms. I was told a while back by "someone who knows" that OSU would have a great chance with Reuland if they offered him and so I think they have a great chance. I think that Ohio State just might have another Ryan Williams on their hands.
IrishBuck (Jul 14, 2005 10:34:51 PM)
Gary, Are you hearing any buzz on any under the radar or new in state prospects for the Bucks? Anybody you have seen play that you think might get an offer that is not already widely publicized? What about that DT, I think his name is something like Torrence Nicholson?
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 10:34:51 PM)
Good question IrishBuck...First off I've never seen Torrence Nicholson either in person or on film so I can't comment on him. I have heard about him obviously. It's amazing how poor the defensive tackle prospects seem to be instate this year. That's why I like Rob Rose a lot inside. I also think Nagy could get in because of his defensive prowess. Tony Reed is another DT from Warren G. Harding who had great potential as a youngster but seems to be falling short of expectations. I don't think Jahmal Brown will get an offer but I think he's terrific. I really do. I saw Cody Blevins at the 7on7 passing camp and don't think he'll get an offer. Maybe the kid with the fast 40 time at camp Price from Hilliard is his name I think..he'll get a look now just from that performance. But most kids waiting on offers are already well known for the most part I believe. I think Cortez Jones of Akron Garfield is tremendous and I only seen him play two games last year before he got hurt. I don't see him getting an OSU offer.
murphy98 (Jul 14, 2005 10:37:43 PM)
Gary , what is your opinion of what ND is doing so far with the new staff ? I looked at there site and it doesn't look like the are coming after all the same kids. Any word on the street about what the Ohio kids are thinking of ND these days ?
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 10:37:43 PM)
Notre Dame is going parochial, literally. I don't care if John Ryan and Robby Parris every play a down at ND, what a great thing the coaches have done at St. Ignatius. BTW, I think Parris is a tremendous prospect and well deserving of a scholarship to Michigan and ND. I think OSU missed the boat on him. ND should go hard after the catholic school kids at big schools and really harvest that talent. From talking with some of the kids being recruited by ND, I think they're doing a tremendous job. And the results thus far speak for itself.
buckguy (Jul 14, 2005 10:40:08 PM)
with the big 33 game next week...how many signees are playing, how many will get signifigant time....and will they produce?
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 10:40:08 PM)
Hi Buckguy...I will be heading to Hershey midweek next week to give all the lates updates and photos that OSU fans want to hear about. I don't know the final talley of which players exactly but there will be a strong contingent there. I'm anxious to see how Brian Hartline does for one. OSU players always do well for the most part in the Big 33 game. Steve might even go to Hershey this year with me.
robochef (Jul 14, 2005 10:40:28 PM)
Whats with Lee Tilley. Does he just not have any intrests in OSU, or does OSU not have intrest in him or both.
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 10:40:28 PM)
I believe the feelings are mutual. No interest.
IrishBuck (Jul 14, 2005 10:43:48 PM)
Gary, we seem to be in on a lot of LBs: Gibson, Navarro Bowman, Gbadyu, Becker, Hunter, et al to go with Ross Homan. How many do you think we can reasonably take? I have heard people predict 4 or 5 at times, but it doesn't seem like we need more than three, which after Homan and Gibson leaves one slot open. Who is your best guess, and is Mixon still in the mix? Thanks!
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 10:43:48 PM)
Irish I'm tired of chasing after top OOS state LB's only to get burned in the end. I almost swore, I did, that James Bryant was headed to OSU from all the conversations that we had and Rico McCoy was big time OSU at one point before he visited Tennessee. I'll take Homan, Gibson when he qualifies, and a guy like a Tommy Becker or an A.J. Edds who would love to get an offer from OSU or would have loved in Edds case. I think OSU could just take three this year but I think they might nab four.
robochef (Jul 14, 2005 10:45:23 PM)
Sometime you will need to explain what exactly a "middle guard" is on the line...I guess I am showing my age.
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 10:45:23 PM)
Plays over the center in a 50 defense or in my case somewhere in the middle of the defensive line. I moved aorund and stunted a lot because I was quick and not very big in lineman standards. Some call them nose tackles or nosemen etc.
labuck (Jul 14, 2005 10:48:14 PM)
I look at this roster from top to bottom and I can't believe how loaded this team is. I thought the team that came out here to Pasedena and beat Ariz St. was the deepest team I ever saw at OSU, even deeper than the Nat. Championship team, but this really might be the best group of talent. Your thoughts?
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 10:48:14 PM)
A lot of talent with quality depth and two veteran QB's at their disposal gives OSU a great chance to have a lot of success this year. I like the overall potential not only this year but next as well. There is definitely a two year window at Ohio State to make things happen.
robochef (Jul 14, 2005 10:49:04 PM)
Ginn Sr. I gain more and more respect for the guy everytime I read something about him, Much the same as when I read about Woody.
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 10:49:04 PM)
That's a bit of a stretch robo but your sentiments are appreciated by many I'm sure.
osufan26 (Jul 14, 2005 10:50:42 PM)
Gary.. sorry I'm late..what is the deal with Javon Ringer? I heard a rumor that he might be ineligable..
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 10:50:42 PM)
Rumorville...Mr. Bucknuts seems to have put a kabosh to that rumor and Ringer should be content to join the Spartans now if all the academic issued are now cleared up as indicated. I wish him well and can't wait to watch him at the Big 33 game next week. I'm a big fan of both Ringer and Sutton.
Guest (Jul 14, 2005 10:53:32 PM)
Do you think we take another RB or do we wait for guys like Mabin, Herron, Torrence and Morgan Williams the following year.
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 10:53:32 PM)
Ohio State could wait another year but RB depth has been an ongoing concern so I would certainly consider taking another. But OSU does not seem to be too high on any other instate runner and who knows what the OOS guys will do. I like Herron as much as any back next year and I like Mabin as well. Torrence is also a stud but he may be on the defensive ball in college. Morgan Williams has a very long way to go when being compared to these three studs. But he's a definite player.
Guest (Jul 14, 2005 10:56:05 PM)
With the recent developements with Ted Ginn Sr. what do you think happens to the Glenville pipeline to Ohio State when he leaves?
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 10:56:05 PM)
osufan26, I think the pipeline instantly moves from Glenville to the Ginn College Preparatory Academy. No distruption in the flow of talent at all. But the OHSAA has to come on board that's for sure or else they will become like a traveling all-star team.
osudrummer (Jul 14, 2005 10:58:26 PM)
hi Gary, have you heard anything about Bani Gdadyu? More specifically where he stands with tOSU?
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 10:58:26 PM)
God bless you! Now what player were you asking about osudrummer? No seriously...I couldn't have been more higher about Rico McCoy coming to OSU last year and look where he ended up so I don't put much stock into any of those kinds of guys anymore.
robochef (Jul 14, 2005 11:00:26 PM)
What do you think of that Faulkner kid from Indy. Do you think he will get offered?
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 11:00:26 PM)
I spotted him at OSU's camp and I thought he looked pretty decents when I was watching him. Just being there was a good sign but I'm not sure where he stands right now. He would be a good guy to contact soon. I liked the young O-lineman from Wisconsin, Oglesby or whatever his name was 6-7 330 pounds.
IrishBuck (Jul 14, 2005 11:03:57 PM)
Gary, You probably won't have time to get to this but have you heard how interested the Bucks are in legacy S Chris Fox from MA?
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 11:03:57 PM)
Haven't followed up on him at all after camp and I wanted to. It seemed if I remember he had a genuine interest in Boston College. Also I think ND was really into him, don't know if they offered. I'm sure my main ND guy will call me or email me after he reads this. I would think OSU would naturally have a shot with him but I've never heard anyone say they thought it was going to happen.
robochef (Jul 14, 2005 11:04:21 PM)
With the schools that ND is attcking recruiting wise this year, if they stick with the same schools every year who will it affect more in recruiting. OSU or Michigan?
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 11:04:21 PM)
Good question... I would say OSU.
robochef (Jul 14, 2005 11:05:03 PM)
Will any young Glenville stars transfer over or will they be stuck in the aftermath. ie. The young Whitners.
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 11:05:03 PM)
All of them.
GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2005 11:07:49 PM)
Guys I have to call it night. Thanks for hanging strong for almost two hours tonight. Sorry we got started late but the breaking Ginn story was worth the wait I hope. Thank you all for participating in the chat tonight and thanks as well go to everyone who took the time to read the chat at a later time. I may be talking to you from Hershey Pa. next week. Maybe a real late Thursday night chat because my days will be long once I get there. Have a great night and good weekend. God Bless and Go Bucks!
