Chat Transcript - Gary Housteau

We have a transcript of today's club chat with Gary Housteau. Read below to check out what was discussed in today's chat.

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:07:41 PM)
Just got back from Ohio's last practice before the Big 33 game on Saturday. It was a short, crisp walk through in shells and shorts. The offense looks really sharp. If the line can hold their own there could be a lot of offensive fireworks.

grimes (Jul 22, 2005 1:14:14 PM)
Does JT play it close to the vest against the weaker teams like SDSU just to test his teams character? I swear he puts them in a pressure cooker for no reason in these games just so when a big game comes along this is a normal feeling. But man it drives you crazy!

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:14:14 PM)
Hi grimes thanks for the first question of the day. IMHO JT will always play it closer to the vest whenever he has the opportunity to. That's just his coaching style. If he can be beat you through basics because the talent difference is so obvious, then he will do it. That's just his M.O. if you will. Work on the basics whenever possible. Pound the football, control the clock, play defense and have a strong kicking game...that's his bread and butter and always will be.

ohs (Jul 22, 2005 1:15:26 PM)
will connor committ next week?

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:15:26 PM)
Hi guess is yes. August 1 unless something has recently changed.

ohs (Jul 22, 2005 1:16:29 PM)
who is the next b-ball committ and when?

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:16:29 PM)
Can't help you with that one. I would think Raymar Morgan would want to commit yesterday but that doesn't seem to be the case. Kyle and Steve might have more on that than I.

ohs (Jul 22, 2005 1:18:51 PM)
anything new on Smith being out for Texas?

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:18:51 PM)
No but there could be one or many unintentional NCAA violations along any point of the trip. Plus the fact he missed class to attend the camp. I would be surprised if he doesn't get an additional one-game suspension. He will be punished internal for this transgression whether he is suspended or not.

BuckeyeDave (Jul 22, 2005 1:19:42 PM)
Where is Mikens from HH-Wayne going to play college ball? Any idea?

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:19:43 PM)
Hi BuckeyeDave...I'm guessing by the fact that he was in the Cincinnati group picture that I took that he is headed there. At least I think that's where he is going. Smile!

BuckeyeDave (Jul 22, 2005 1:21:54 PM)
Will TS's punishment be handled internally, or might he be suspended from all or a portion of the Texas game?

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:21:55 PM)
Addressed that one above...I don't think JT will keep him out of the Texas game if he's not suspended by the NCAA. Internally he will suffer the consequences. This is definitely preventable. The fault lies totally on Smith and nothing to do with the compliance dept. or the football dept. at OSU.

grimes (Jul 22, 2005 1:25:49 PM)
Does TG have a greater chance of injury on offence or defense? He is valuable wherever, but the will he or wont heon either side of the ball is more of a risk issue with burning him out as much as anything.

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:25:49 PM)
When you have a talent like TGII you play him as much as humanly possible while you have him. He will be gone before we all know it so it makes no sense not to get the maximum use out of him that you can. He works hard, he's in great shape and it's almost impossible to get a solid hit on him when he's running with the ball because he so elusive and fast. Just let him play and the results will speak for themselves on both sides of the ball.

BuckeyeDave (Jul 22, 2005 1:27:28 PM)
can you give some examples of the internal consequences TS might face? Extra drills? Extra 6AM workouts? Running the steps at the 'Shoe?

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:27:28 PM)
When Cochran was here it meant more of everything physical. Riding the stationary bike and extra drills were a part of the equation. It wasn't an easy thing to be injured with Cochran barking orders at you. I don't know how it is now but I'm sure it's similar. It's no picnic to be injured.

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:31:30 PM)
Ohio's four receiver set is Brian Robiskie, Brian Hartline, E.J. Morton-Green and Mario Manningham. Schoenhoft could have a field day if he has time. Both Robiskie and Hartline made really nice grabs at practice this morning. Robiskie looks the ball into his hands as good as any receiver I've seen at this level. Hartline runs hard and crisp patterns on every play. Manningham isn't the practice player that either of the two OSU players are but he will show up in the game. He just does. Morton-Green is a really nice target as well. I actually loved how the passing game looked this morning. Again there will be a few surprises that I'm sworn to secrecy on that could hit for big gainers.

Guest (Jul 22, 2005 1:33:27 PM)
Gary, there is a report on ABC 27 out of Harrisburg that the Big 33 game could move to Pittsburgh's Heinz Field next year? Have you heard anything about that this week, and what would be your thoughts on the game moving to Pittsburgh?

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:33:27 PM)
Hi Buster Douglas, nice screen name you have. I have not heard that and it would be a shame to move the game out of Hershey whether Ohio plays in it next year or not. This is such a great atmosphere here and the players are treated great. I will make a point to ask about that at the presser this afternoon. I'm sure reporters will have a lot of questions about the future of the Big 33 game. Keep it in Hershey.

BuckeyeDave (Jul 22, 2005 1:34:46 PM)
Any idea what happens when a kid on a full ride suffers a career-ending injury?

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:34:46 PM)
Medical waiver I believe. He keeps his scholarship and gets an education and the football team gets to dole out his ship to another player. Steve is the man who know the legal issues better than I.

Guest (Jul 22, 2005 1:37:14 PM)
Gary, since the Big 33 is moving its game to June next year (either in Hershey or Pittsburgh) and Ohio is loyal to the North-South game (also in June) what are the chances that Ohio will drop out of the game next year? Hopefully Ohio will move the North-South game to spring, but some people feel that the coaches will not be willing to do that. I just do not want to see us throw away our affiliation with the Big 33.

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:37:14 PM)
Buster Douglas wants to know more about the future of the Big 33 and I hope to have some of those answers after the press conference this afternoon. Nobody really knows what is going to happen at this time. Maybe we will know more tonight. I would like to see Ohio continue to be in the Big 33 but not at the expense of the North-South game.

ohs (Jul 22, 2005 1:39:01 PM)
When will the NCAA decide for sure that OSU b-ball is clear? I'm still somewhat nervous Oden, etc. will look elsewhere if we get hit with some penalty.

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:39:02 PM)
Don't know that answer although I think Steve said they moved the date back a couple of days in his Buckeye Grove column...I think I read it there. But I'm sorry I don't know the anticipated date.

ohs (Jul 22, 2005 1:39:59 PM)
and is NCAA done with OHS football totally after Clarett or could some penalty still come?

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:40:00 PM)
Unfortunately this latest episode with TS keeps any pending investigations open.

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:41:42 PM)
Any questions you might away.

SteveHelwagen (Jul 22, 2005 1:41:44 PM)
Gary, you may want to check on this tonight or tomorrow, but there are rumblings that the Big 33 may move to Pittsburgh. Maybe this is a concession to the Ohio coaches, perhaps.

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:42:22 PM)
I will check on that at the presser Steve.

buckgrad (Jul 22, 2005 1:44:22 PM)
Afternoon Gary, how many Glenville players do expect to ink with OSU in this class?

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:44:23 PM)
It looks like just two although Browning and Adams are potentials as well. And there could be a Curtis Terry, late addition, to the class but I don't see it. Small and Rose will sign LOI in February and that might be it for this year. Browning would jump if an offer came his way.

Buster Douglas (Jul 22, 2005 1:45:44 PM)
Gary, what is your favorite Hershey chocolate product? (and I hope you are getting some free samples for your hard work!)

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:45:45 PM)
Buster I have to go with the Mr. Goodbar. Awesome. The Hershey bar with almonds is right there as well. Yesterday at the afternoon practice you could just smell the chocolate blowing across the practice field from the nearby Hershey smoke stacks. It was awesome.

BuckeyeDave (Jul 22, 2005 1:46:12 PM)
There was a Chris Wells quote on the other board. something about seeing how investigations go and seeing how this year's running game pans out. Should we be concerned? (I had a nightmare that he decommitted and then committed to tsun.)

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:46:12 PM)

dully (Jul 22, 2005 1:48:15 PM)
Any new scoop on the scheduling of future opponents (Louisville, etc.)?

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:48:15 PM)
No although I'm still hoping for an unpopular chance for Youngstown State to appear on a future OSU schedule...just one time. I just don't see how JT could not make it happen it because he was on that other side of the fence before. I say that JT has to make it happen even it's just one time. I will be completely shocked if he doesn't make it happen at some point.

Ptownfan (Jul 22, 2005 1:51:11 PM)
Gary, Greetings! Do you see a balanced offense tomorrow at Hershey, or do you think it will be mostly pass given Ohio's WR talent? Will we see much of Ringer and Simpson? Also, do you know why Stross isn't playing?

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:51:11 PM)
They will be passing from the moment they step out of the locker room. And I really love their offensive coordinator. I'm not a real big fan of the one-back offense for an entire game...I like the I-formation...but with only two real running backs on the roster and a boat load of talent at wide receiver, it's inevitable that it will be a passing fest for the Ohio offense. Simpson will start and Ringer will get some carries but they will test the air early and often. Stross is not in Hershey and I don't know why. I didn't ask.

Buster Douglas (Jul 22, 2005 1:53:26 PM)
Is Cincinnati getting their QB of the future in Goodman? I know he can run, but can he be a D-I college QB in terms of passing?

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:53:26 PM)
I could see Goodman eventually becoming a wideout. He has talent no question but I think he's better suited to play wideout than QB. He can pass but he's more effective as a runner at QB. Who knows maybe Schoenhoft will even find him on the other end of one of his passes in the Big 33 game???

BuckeyeDave (Jul 22, 2005 1:55:51 PM)
Besides YSU, what 3 or 4 opponents would like to see at Ohio Stadium? What is your favorite place to see an away game. I've always been partial to Purdue and Indiana. Absolutely hate Wisconsin!

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:55:51 PM)
I like beating Penn State in Beaver Stadium. That's a good place to play. They have a big stadium, built in sections, but it's nothing compared to Ohio Stadium. I have only been to Penn State and Michigan on the road. This year, tentatively, I'll be at every game but the one at Minnesota.

Buster Douglas (Jul 22, 2005 1:58:16 PM)
Gary, Has Ohio head coach Steve Channell found a new HS job yet? Or is he out of coaching this year? I bet Channell prepared extra hard for this game if it's his only coaching apperance of the year.

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 1:58:16 PM)
Channell has been very outgoing and friendly to me this week. He has somewhat of a dry sense of humor so he's hard to read some times but he and his staff have been great to be around this week. I haven't asked him about his future but yes he has been working hard on even the small details and situations at practice. And the coaches in general have said that they've been spending countless hours every day in preparation for the game.

grimes (Jul 22, 2005 2:00:58 PM)
Do you think this team will "evolve" as much as last years team or even some from years past? Or does JT finally have his system in place to have a gradual growth, instead of the ups and downs from last year?

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 2:00:58 PM)
The gradual growth last year was attributed to the talents of Ted Ginn Jr. The system you are referring to is the one that hasn't been really productive, statistically, in his first four years at the helm. Slow and steady, with a few big plays from TGII mixed in, wins the race when JT is driving.

Ptownfan (Jul 22, 2005 2:04:09 PM)
Gary any unsung players at Big 33 that could have a surprisingly good showing like the Humphreys (I think that was his name) kid did in N/S with the 2 TDs?

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 2:04:09 PM)
Hi Ptownfan...Donte Love could have an unexpected impact in the game. But I think most of the big production will come from the big name players on offense...if the offensive line can do the job. Again Robiskie and Hartline are both very impressive in practice.

Guest (Jul 22, 2005 2:05:18 PM)
What OOC opponents would you like to added to the Ohio St schedule? What teams that we might not otherwise play?

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 2:05:18 PM)
I would love to play ND more often then once every generation...maybe Gene Smith can help to make this possible in the future.

Guest (Jul 22, 2005 2:06:43 PM)
The weekend has finally arrived for me! Thanks for the chat! BTW- -It sounds like Robiskie and Hartline might make us forget about MM. Your thoughts?

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 2:06:43 PM)
No BuckeyeDave...Manningham is the real deal no matter how you slice it. I give MM the business all the time but I respect him for the results he produces on the gridiron. He's a good kid although a bit misguided

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 2:07:09 PM)
Any more questions???

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 2:10:22 PM)
There's a 4:15 media confernece with Raghib Ismail at the Hershey Lodge and then some of the coaches like JT and Joe Pa and others might say a few words before the big banquet tonight. Tomorrow is an open day until going over to Hershey Park Stadium about 5 o'clock. I'll hit the Chocolate World at the Park again tomorrow.

GaryHousteau (Jul 22, 2005 2:12:50 PM)
It was a bit of slow day today so we'll wrap it up for now. Austin Spitler and Lawrence Wilson have had a great week of practice to name of couple names on defense. The unit should be strong against the Pa. team tomorrow night. On offense look for the fireworks to come at any time during the game. I think the offense could have a big showing if practice is any indication. Hope to see you here in Hershey.
