Plus, he also published his regular Schott In The Arm column for subscribers on the premium Hoops message board.
The latest edition features a chronological look back to the recruiting process of the most recent basketball commitments Mike Conley and Greg Oden. It also talks more about the possible fifth member of the 2006 recruiting class, and who the candidates are. Additionally, we look ahead at future rosters, talk about some prospects sitting in good shape with Ohio State, and also a few that are committed elsewhere that may see some action heating up.
Enjoy the latest Schott in the Arm (keep in mind, this column is loaded on a premium message board).
Here is the archive from Lamb's Chat Tuesday night.
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:11:58 PM)
Let me start by reminding everyone that we have Scout Hoops very own Dave Telep coming in to take your questions about recruiting on August 3rd, a Wednesday
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:12:31 PM)
Secondly, we have another surprise coming up for premium subscribers shortly thereafter which I should have details for by next week that I want everyone to keep their eyes peeled for.
stone cold buckeye (Jul 26, 2005 9:12:58 PM)
The surprise is ice cream....right!!!!
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:13:07 PM)
Some might say it's better than ice cream (haha)
Odequanley (Jul 26, 2005 9:13:21 PM)
kyle, if you had to guess, who will Raymar sign with and when?
Bellbuck (Jul 26, 2005 9:13:24 PM)
Any word on when Morgan will announce?
ODOGG45 (Jul 26, 2005 9:13:25 PM)
Kyle- anything new on Morgan?
stone cold buckeye (Jul 26, 2005 9:13:27 PM)
What is the call on Morgan....Is he putting us off because we put him off???
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:13:40 PM)
Needless to say, let's address the key issue of the evening!
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:14:01 PM)
Morgan's decision will be coming in the next few weeks, and probably (at the latest), the first of September...
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:14:19 PM)
I think he's going to take three official visits in the next couple of weeks to Ohio State, Michigan, and Michigan State, and he will probably call it a day
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:14:44 PM)
Our sources have been varying as to the situation, but let me do my best to give the scoop as I hear it...
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:15:17 PM)
Much speculation has Morgan favoring Michigan State. I think he goes back and forth between MSU and OSU, but my personal opinion is that Ohio State holds a slight edge on most days...
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:15:45 PM)
I do know that he was disappointed it took so long for Ohio State to offer, but I feel he also really likes the chance he has of playing with this recruiting class Ohio State has
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:16:05 PM)
So right now it's pretty close, but information I trust greatly makes me think Ohio State can pull it off
MBuck37 (Jul 26, 2005 9:16:14 PM)
Are there anymore bluechip 5 star signees in our near future(06 class)?
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:17:14 PM)
Other than a small (and lingering) shot at Thaddeus Young, I think Morgan is the realistic possibility left to finish out the class. I get the impression the staff is operating under the veil he will be their great finish. Vernon Macklin seems like he will end up at G-Town, and Lance Thomas is still lingering, but Rutgers, Nova, Duke, and Arizona are the mainstays
GORDONbuckeye (Jul 26, 2005 9:17:18 PM)
Where will Mayo and Walker end up and does Osu have a chance
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:17:54 PM)
Ohio State would love to land Mayo individually I believe, but it won't happen. I see them ending up together (with Keenan Ellis) at West Virginia or Cincinnati.
mike4180 (Jul 26, 2005 9:18:00 PM)
will Tucker receive an offer if the other 3 pf goes elsewhere or is he done with OSU
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:18:27 PM)
He is still listing Ohio State, but A) It's unlikely he gets offered, and B) Even if he were, I think at this point he would opt to go elsewhere
riverwatchbucknut (Jul 26, 2005 9:18:41 PM)
When is the interview with Jay Bilas gonna be finished and up?
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:19:14 PM)
I am going to be calling him tomorrow for the interview, so look for that by the end of the week. You still have a chance tonight to ask any other questions, and I will sort them out before I call as to which ones i'm using.
ODOGG45 (Jul 26, 2005 9:19:20 PM)
Kylw any way Matta brings back midnight mass for the Thad 5?
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:19:47 PM)
I believe Matta has said he's not in favor of that, but given the hype of the incoming class for next season, if he does it, next year would be the perfect chance to do so.
riverwatchbucknut (Jul 26, 2005 9:19:53 PM)
How is Dallas doing this summer haven't heard anything recently?
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:20:29 PM)
He has played well based on reports, but not necessarily spectacular. Between some problems at home, and a few injuries, it's mostly just a case of not being able to play very often.
MBuck37 (Jul 26, 2005 9:20:37 PM)
Just how good is Raymar Morgan..Will he be a Buckeye if he has not already committed somewhere...Thanks again Kyle.
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:21:41 PM)
Morgan is very good, and those who have followed the premium board in the past know that I like him a lot. He is very tough, he can score, especially in the lane, and he is strong and athletic. I think his shot is a work in progress, but he has a meanstreak about him that I think makes him potentially the perfect compliment to the so-called Thad Five
riverwatchbucknut (Jul 26, 2005 9:21:54 PM)
Is Kosta a silent? He sounds like it from the way hes talking
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:23:16 PM)
I'm pretty confident that he's not a silent commitment. However, I will have more on him in the Schott in the Arm which will be out tomorrow (Wednesday). I believe Ohio State is in great position obviously. I just do not believe he is a "silent" verbal to anyone. But you can read into his comments and take a little bit of a psychology lesson, I think
Guest (Jul 26, 2005 9:23:32 PM)
so if not Morgan than who is our 4?
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:23:43 PM)
Stone Cold asks who is the four if not Morgan...
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:24:40 PM)
I think Ohio State would still try for Thomas or Young, but I don't think they feel it's necessary to get a PF in this class if they don't get the right one. After all, Koufos and Lauderdale are in the next class, they have Brayden Bell until then, and Yancey Gates in the class after Lauderdale and Koufos
MBuck37 (Jul 26, 2005 9:24:47 PM)
I think Sylvester Mayes will be the surprise player this year I watched the video clips of him and he looks like a phoenominal scorer what do you think?..ThankAgain
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:26:01 PM)
I absolutely think Mayes is a very smooth and pure scorer. He will be an asset to Ohio State. I really didn't see much weakness in any of his offensive game. He's got great range, he's very quick, and he seems to play under control. His release is so smooth. He's probably not big enough to be an NBA 2-guard, but he's got the type of athleticism and shot to make it if he were
ODOGG45 (Jul 26, 2005 9:26:09 PM)
Kyle- is Mike Conley the best pure point guard in the country?
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:26:27 PM)
I just have not seen the other "top" point guards to really compare, but I'll say this about Conley....
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:26:44 PM)
In my mind, he's really the prototypical point guard a college team could possibly sign...
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:27:35 PM)
He's always in control, he makes terrific decisions with the basketball, and he's great amazing court savvy. My personal opinion is his outside shot isn't good enough yet to expect him to make shots in the clutch, but I would be hard-pressed to believe he won't improve a lot between now and then.
GORDONbuckeye (Jul 26, 2005 9:27:41 PM)
How do you stack our class(with morgan) against the fab 5
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:28:25 PM)
I think the Fab 5 is still a bit better in talent overall. And further, what they did from day one was pretty impressive. However, in terms of a perfect class, I don't think with Morgan in the mix you could ask for any better a combination of five players and how they fit in with one another.
Odequanley (Jul 26, 2005 9:28:35 PM)
What's up with Mayo? Is he really the #1 in the country for his year? I mean he has getting owned in these allstar games the last 3 games....not something you see from a national #1 very often.
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:29:17 PM)
Right now I think he has fallen victim to tougher competition, and he's pressing himself a little more. He has felt the need to make more shots instead of doing what he does best-- drive and dish. That has led to erratic shooting, and it has shown in some of his confidence.
MBuck37 (Jul 26, 2005 9:29:24 PM)
Will Mike Conley,Oden, and Daequan Cook come in and be instant starters next year?
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:30:11 PM)
They are all good enough to do that, and Oden almost assuredly will start, but with Cook and Conley it depends on the guards ahead of them (i.e., Jamar Butler and Sylvester Mayes)
irishbuck (Jul 26, 2005 9:30:16 PM)
Kyle, Who do you thik we end up with in the next class (2007): Lauderdale, Koufas, Rakim Sanders, and maybe Jackson?
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:31:01 PM)
Lauderdale and Koufos are the only two I would feel comfortable enough to speculate could join the fray, but Sanders is one of many possibilities. Jackson I feel will most likely not be at Ohio State
mike4180 (Jul 26, 2005 9:31:12 PM)
Is there any point or combo guards on the radar for 2007 or 2008
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:31:32 PM)
Too early to tell for 2008, but most of the guards Ohio State is chasing for 2007 are pure two guards or wings
MBuck37 (Jul 26, 2005 9:31:45 PM)
Is OSU already looking at prospects for the 2007 class? If so who are they initially targeting since Mayo is out of the question.
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:32:53 PM)
Besides Koufos and Lauderdale, some guys to watch for are Eric Gordon (they are still after him, although it looks bleak), Jon Diebler, Herb Pope, Rakim Sanders, Robbie Hummel, E'Twaun Moore, JuJuan Johnson, and Alex Legion to name a few
MBuck37 (Jul 26, 2005 9:32:58 PM)
Why is Mayo so seemingly anti-OhioState?
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:34:38 PM)
I really don't think Mayo is the one that seems to be a little upset at Ohio State. That seems to be coming from Walker. I really don't think it's any one thing, but my hunch is that Ohio State wasnt really showing Walker much love (at least, compared to what colleges were recruiting either he or Mayo), and that may have made him a little upset. Who knows, really
Guest (Jul 26, 2005 9:34:44 PM)
what happened with eric gordon? he was talking up OSU as his leader for a while and now he doesn't even mention us.
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:34:59 PM)
osumack asks why Gordon is no longer listing Ohio State...
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:35:19 PM)
Has mostly to do with playing time, and other teams convinced him he would have a hard time getting on the floor with the guards Ohio State will have
mike4180 (Jul 26, 2005 9:35:23 PM)
How is David Lightly coming along
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:35:45 PM)
He is doing very well. He's jogging now, and having no pain. He should be recovered earlier than expected.
Bellbuck (Jul 26, 2005 9:35:54 PM)
Where does the NCAA investigation stand? I thought OSU was supposed to respond by now, including recommending penalties.
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:36:57 PM)
Today was actually the day that the NCAA wanted a response from Ohio State about their findings, but they granted a 3-day extension to the 29th (Friday) because of the legal suit of Jim O'Brien asking they make all the documents public in their case. I don't know where O'Brien's case ties in to the extention, but I know that was the reason for the delay
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:37:11 PM)
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:37:20 PM)
(Sorry for the typo)
MJ (Jul 26, 2005 9:37:31 PM)
Why is OSU all of sudden the hottest thing in college basketball?
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:37:53 PM)
Matta is just one of those rare coaches that can really connect with people, and it's carrying over.
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:38:17 PM)
Plus, any time a school gets a verbal commitment from a player of Greg Oden's caliber, it tempts many players to want to get to play with a guy like his magnitude
mike4180 (Jul 26, 2005 9:38:27 PM)
Has any of the 4 recruits pass their test scores yet
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:39:47 PM)
Oden and Conley are pretty much 4.0 students, and Lighty is a (I believe) 3.5 student, so the results of those three will be pretty much irrelevant. Cook's GPA is in pretty good standing, but I believe his test score is the only thing he needs to bring up. I think he will be eligible with no problems, however
Odequanley (Jul 26, 2005 9:39:56 PM)
Kyle, who starts at the by the middle of the Big 10 season of Conley's freshman year at PG....Conley or Butler?
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:40:14 PM)
Really just too early to say. I think it will be easier to answer that when we see how Butler rebounds this sophomore season
osumack (Jul 26, 2005 9:40:35 PM)
what can you tell me about delvon roe, his game, and his interest in OSU, and vice versa?
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:41:41 PM)
He likes Ohio State, but I don't believe he's a big fan by any means. I know he's really a big ACC fan, and likes North Carolina and Duke right now. He's a tough player with a lot of skill inside the paint, but his perimeter skills will have to develop some more. He's a lefty, very strong, pretty athletic.
irishbuck (Jul 26, 2005 9:41:50 PM)
Kyle, Do you expect Josh Chichester to contribute at all as a walk-on at some point (while he is on a football scholarship)?
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:42:46 PM)
I really don't see Chichester contributing much to the basketball team at Ohio State as long as he's a 2-way player. He is a tremendous prospect, and has a lot of potential, but he's a kid that's still somewhat raw in comparison to the better players in the country, and without that devotion and time to improve, I don't think he will be able to crack the rotation
MJ (Jul 26, 2005 9:42:56 PM)
Top 5 teams in the Big 10 next season?
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:43:42 PM)
Illinios, Michigan State, Ohio State, Michigan, and Wisconsin is my personal top five. Minnesota, Iowa, and Indiana all right there in a second tier.
Odequanley (Jul 26, 2005 9:43:48 PM)
Kyle, look deep into your Crystal Ball....is Matta here to stay or is this a stepping stone for him?
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:44:33 PM)
If he continues at the pace he's on, there would be very little reason for him to leave any time in the near or even distant future. College coaching longevity is just so small these days that it's really tough to look too far down the road, but my guess is that he will be at Ohio State a good while
M1LL10N (Jul 26, 2005 9:44:53 PM)
What kind of player is Sanders? I know he's a wing, but what current or recent college player has a comparable game to that of Rakim?
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:45:11 PM)
I guess I just can't think of a good comparison for Rakim to anyone, but I can describe his game a little...
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:46:27 PM)
He's a decent athlete. He's pretty smooth in the lane and on the drive. He's a scorer, but also has nice passing instincts and is very unselfish. Good shooter with a nice release. I would like to see him crash the boards more often from what I saw in Teaneck, but he wasn't exactly soft. I didn't find him to be a great defender, but he was pretty intense even on defense
irishbuck (Jul 26, 2005 9:46:36 PM)
Kyle, If too many great players come for one or two years, won't that play havoc with the new NCAA rating system based on garduation rates and grades, etc?
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:47:13 PM)
It could, but that's just such an unknown commodity for now, it's tough to say. I do know that coaches are really trying to get the NCAA to chance the scale in regards to players leaving early for the NBA and how it effects their ratings.
irishbuck (Jul 26, 2005 9:47:20 PM)
Kyle, Is Robbie Hummel from Indiana a realistic possibility or is he mostly looking elsewhere (re 2007 class)?
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:47:39 PM)
I believe he's a realistic possibility, but he's a kid with several options and staying home will be one of them.
mike4180 (Jul 26, 2005 9:47:58 PM)
The pick and roll is so important in Matta offense. Do you think that Morgan can hit the 3 point shot and do you think he can rebound in traffic. The two games I have seen on T.V. he seem more like a 3 man to me.
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:49:01 PM)
Ironically, Conley and Oden have the pick and roll down pat. Very astute observation, because the incoming recruits are very good for that offense. I think Morgan can hit it, but he's got to do it more often. Rebounding is not a problem for him in my book, I think he will do that just fine.
mike4180 (Jul 26, 2005 9:49:14 PM)
What kind of summer has Cook had?
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:49:54 PM)
For most of the summer, Cook has been great. He hasn't scored as much this summer, but he also hasn't needed to, and he has really shown some amazing passing skills. His all-around game has been on.
irishbuck (Jul 26, 2005 9:50:04 PM)
Kyle, I really want us to get Morgan to finish off this class. In your opinion, will I be happy or sad come fall?
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:50:24 PM)
Could go either way, but there's some reason to be optimistic
antosu (Jul 26, 2005 9:50:40 PM)
When Oden, Conley, Cook, Lighty and whoever else are freshman, it is possible that we won't come out of the gates flying. Will we be better this coming season than we will be in the thad5's freshman season?
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:51:52 PM)
That really depends on Lewis and Mayes. If they are really as good as they can be, and I think they will be, you give those guys Oden and the rest of the freshmen, and I think there will be enough talent to overcome the freshmen mistakes. Of course, Butler could help matters by solidifying the PG position, so they don't have to count on Conley right away.
GORDONbuckeye (Jul 26, 2005 9:52:01 PM)
whats the odd on OSU winning tourney this year
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:52:31 PM)
Big Ten tournament is a realistic possibility, but the NCAA tournament isn't really a realistic goal until 2006-2007.
Odequanley (Jul 26, 2005 9:52:44 PM)
Kyle, do you or does Bucknuts have any input to the Scout BBall top100 list?
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:53:09 PM)
No, that is completely done by Telep and the rest of the Scout Hoops staff (Jeff Goodman, Greg Hicks, Tracy Pierson, etc)
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:53:44 PM)
We have time for about 5 minutes more of questions
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:54:46 PM)
As I mentioned earlier, I would like to remind everyone that the Schott in the Arm will be out sometime Wednesday, so you will want to be watching for that. I'll be wrapping up the Bilas interview, and the recruiting chart is almost formatted once again.
MBuck37 (Jul 26, 2005 9:54:51 PM)
---Is Greg Oden the only sure Lottery pick of who we have coming in
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:55:17 PM)
Yes, Oden is the only lottery pick as of now. Cook has that potential, but I see him as a late first rounder ultimately.
GORDONbuckeye (Jul 26, 2005 9:55:30 PM)
When ca we expect to see a recruiting tv show for the midwest(similar to the one for the sout)
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:55:56 PM)
I think Scout is doing a good job heading in that direction, but right now I don't know of anything planned. We will always continue to make suggestions and see what we can pull off.
UABuck (Jul 26, 2005 9:56:01 PM)
If we miss on Morgan and Young, what do you think happens with our 2006 PF recruiting?
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:56:29 PM)
My personal opinion is that they will sink or swim with the remaining prospects, and if they don't get them, ride it out for a year with maybe taking a JUCO or something along those lines
Odequanley (Jul 26, 2005 9:56:38 PM)
Kyle, Oden 1 and done?
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:56:51 PM)
Possibly, but I think two years is a realistic expectation too
irishbuck (Jul 26, 2005 9:57:00 PM)
Kyle, Not a question, just thanks for your really outstanding coverage! Please keep it up! GO BUCKS!
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:57:11 PM)
That's much appreciated. We definitely plan to keep it up!
Kyle S. Lamb (Jul 26, 2005 9:57:53 PM)
With that note, I shall bid everyone a fond adieu I believe for the evening. Remember, Telep's chat on the 3rd is the next one we have coming, but there's a special surprise in a few weeks and I promise you will really like it
MBuck37 (Jul 26, 2005 9:57:59 PM)
