Housteau Chat: July 28 Archive

Here are excerpts from Gary Housteau's Chat session Thursday evening. He conducts these Chat sessions each week for Bucknuts.com subscribers. Steve Helwagen will conduct one at 3 p.m. Friday.

tj (Jul 28, 2005 9:10:15 PM)
Hi Gary! What is the word on Conner Smith????

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 9:10:15 PM)
Hi tj...I made a phone call just before I came on the chat tonight for a possible update but no one answered the call. I'm hoping for a return call because I need to make plans on making the trek on Monday if they will have something official. No solid word leaking out yet other than speculation.

GORDONbuckeye (Jul 28, 2005 9:11:47 PM)
What is our situation with Konrad Ruelland- Does it look good for us?

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 9:11:48 PM)
Hi again GORDONbuckeye...A while back when OSU was recruiting Ryan Williams I was told that Ohio State had a really good shot at Rueland. I think the birth ties to Ohio State will be a strong factor like they were with Ryan and I will not be surprised at all if he too chooses OSU in the end. Nothing really solid to go on yet though.

CaptainSeegs (Jul 28, 2005 9:14:05 PM)
Gary, What are you hearing about the Big 33... Will this be the last year for an Ohio team to participate or will some kind of compromise (with the date) be worked out???

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 9:14:05 PM)
Hi CaptainSeegs...almost without fail, the people that I was speaking to in Hershey seem to think it will be the last time that Ohio and Pennsylvania hook up at least in the near future in the Big 33. And that is a shame because that's a great thing they have going in Hershey. I'll really miss going there if Ohio pulls out but life will go on. I tend to think that was the last game we may ever see between Ohio and Pa but I hope that I'm wrong about that.

GORDONbuckeye (Jul 28, 2005 9:19:07 PM)
Can you tell us a little more about this terrance kid i have been hearing great things about for 2007. They say he loves OSU

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 9:19:07 PM)
If you're speaking about Devon Torrence and I think you are then I think he's a terrific looking kid and prospect in the future. I've only met him once in person so I don't know him like Bill Greene does but I got to talk to him and J'Keem Waters of Canton South also and both young men are really high on Ohio State. I believe Duane is high on Devon as a RB but I tend to like him more on the defensive side of the ball at the next level from talking with a few of my sources. Great player no question. Great athlete...baseball player and track guy. Duane has him as his number one junior to be I believe. I like him a lot as well. I haven't met his younger brother Devoe yet...another prospect in the sophomore class next year.

jaxbuckeye (Jul 28, 2005 9:21:53 PM)
Gary...Thanks for all the info you provide us hear on Bucknuts. Are the BUCKEYES trying to recruit Jamar Hornsby from Jacksonville, Florida? I thought they might have an in with him since Mo Wells hails from the same school

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 9:21:53 PM)
Hi jaxbuckeye...the last time I spoke with Mo Wells...he seemed to think OSU would at least have a good shot with him and I think they will if he comes here for a visit. I haven't checked his status in a while but if Wells has a good freshman year then I think Hornsby's interest will increase. I believe Michigan was or is high on his list. I haven't tracked him at all yet so I have no first-hand insight but I may look into his situation soon. He's good friends with Wells so that could possibly bode well for OSU in the end.

GORDONbuckeye (Jul 28, 2005 9:24:50 PM)
How does osu look on sept. 9th to land Wallace and brown on there visits?

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 9:24:51 PM)
I talked to Wallace briefly when he was unofficially on campus in June at the N/S game and I talked to some of the players he was hanging with and Wallace enjoyed himself immensely at OSU. SI had him on their All-Star team and I believe he set his official visit to OSU already so I think the Buckeyes have at least a decent shot to land him. A couple of the OSU players he was hanging with spoke very highly of him and also of what he thought of Ohio State.

GORDONbuckeye (Jul 28, 2005 9:26:45 PM)
OSU-TEXAS prediction(use your crystal ball)

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 9:26:45 PM)
OSU will shut Young down and send Texas home with a loss. No Cedric Benson are you kidding me. They won't know what hit them. If Zwick plays well against Miami the week before...it could be a pretty big win in the 'Shoe against Texas.

marksgforce (Jul 28, 2005 9:30:49 PM)
Tressell says Ginn is the fastest football player he has ever seen. How about you? When I think football speed, I think Neon Deion. Is Ginn in that class?

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 9:30:49 PM)
No question marksgforce. Ginn is Deion without the Primetime. Think of a humble Deion Sanders if that's possible. I thought Stevie Breston was the bomb at one point but then I started seeing what TGII was doing at Glenville. For those who still haven't seen his run against Massillon Perry in his senior year at the 'Ville, you haven't truly seen a great run until you see that. That was as flamboyant that I've ever seen TGII. He came off the field chanting..."I'm a dawg. I'm a dawg. Repeatedly." It was as good a run from about 60 yards out as I've ever seen in person in high school. And I've seen a few games over the years.

Guest (Jul 28, 2005 9:34:16 PM)
Gary, Do you think it would be a mistake for the bucks to not offer any of the Ohio QB's this year? I have a bad feeling one of these guys will be lighting us up in a few years.

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 9:34:16 PM)
Hi DuluthBuckeye...it won't be a mistake when you have a guy like Rob Schoenhoft already on the roster who will be ready to assume the position in 2007, but I would like to see Mike Hartline have the chance to compete for the job as well. Otherwise OSU will face Hartline at Wisconsin and he will be all that at the next level. Could you imagine if Mike Hartline was throwing to Brian this past year? My goodness. Mike could be as big a stud as his brother. He's 6-6 with a strong arm, very competitive to a fault almost, and he's a better athlete than OSU is obviously giving him credit for. A mistake not offering Hartline, no but they may regret it nonetheless. But I really like Schoenhoft regardless.

marksgforce (Jul 28, 2005 9:37:23 PM)
How good a chance do we really have with Konrad? What do the coaches have to do on the visit? Any idea who might be hosting him?

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 9:37:24 PM)
From what a was told a while back by someone who knew...Luke Fickell had made a very favorable impression on the whole MV crowd in general, Williams and Reuland in particular. This will be an unofficial visit I'm almost certain unless Steve stated something different in his most recent update so there will be no official host but he will be escorted around campus by Fickell and other OSU staff members and academics I'm certain. I think OSU will sell itself. When it meets up with all of his dreams and expectations, it could be a done deal. Like Williams.

OTC (Jul 28, 2005 9:40:21 PM)
Will Hartline see the field in some capacity this year?

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 9:40:21 PM)
Hi OTC ... that's a tough one for even Hartline to handle. I would hate to see him wasted on special teams only but I think that is certain to happen. He already sat out one year and I think a second one will do him no good for sure. He needs to feel that competition and he may just earn some reps as the fifth or sixth receiver. I wouldn't doubt him that's for sure. He told me in Hershey that he was coming to OSU this week...he may already be there...to begin his assult on evaluating his situation and earning some playing time. He will be very proactive about it I can tell you that.

GORDONbuckeye (Jul 28, 2005 9:44:12 PM)
What are you thought on Todd Boeckman getting some reps this year?

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 9:44:12 PM)
Gordon I have to admit I've heard it from many sources, players and others that Boeckman could be right up there in the mix this year and that's obviously a good thing for him but I don't think it's a good thing for this team. There's still that learning curve to deal with and I firmly believe that you have to be bad like Nugent once was in a high profile/ high pressure position before you can become really good. I think Zwick has certainly gone through a tough stretch and Troy Smith certainly has not. If you survive the school of hard knocks like Nugent did and possibly Zwick, then you have a pretty good chance you will prosper. I just don't think OSU has time to bring Boeckman slowly along and they shouldn't have to with two experienced QB's ahead of him. That's just MHO. Smile. I look forward to Boeckman and Schoenhoft going at it in two years.

ohs (Jul 28, 2005 9:46:52 PM)
will bucks get a PF for basketball team, if so who?

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 9:46:52 PM)
Hi ohs...I would be happy with Raymar Morgan but if they could get a guy like Thad Young to round out the top five then that would be great also. If they would get them both that would even be better. But that's what Kyle Lamb and Steve are for. I would like to get a verbal commitment from Dallas Lauderdale any time who will be a junior next year. I've spoken to him in person and he really likes Ohio State and David Lighty has been in his ear for a while now. Lauderdale is Theeee guy.

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 9:52:45 PM)
Jaxbuckeye asked about Adam Myers-White and I lost his question so I'll just say that AMW seemed very happy with his choice to sign with Tennessee when I seen him in San Antonio so that's good for him. I don't know the real reason but apparently OSU just decided to go in another direction and AMW did go in another direction. BTW... AMW and Brad Jones of Canton McKinley may have been separated at birth. They could pass for twins a year apart.

Guest (Jul 28, 2005 9:53:30 PM)
how many LBs will bucks take this year?

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 9:53:30 PM)
Maybe three I'm guessing. Homan, Gibson and one other for instance.

BuckeyeDave (Jul 28, 2005 9:54:18 PM)
Are you hearing any rumblings from the Brown camp?

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 9:54:18 PM)
Hi Buckeye Dave...last I heard it would be between OSU and Florida and I tend to think OSU has a really good shot with him. They need to get Smith first on Monday.

Pastor Jack (Jul 28, 2005 9:55:46 PM)
Any way to get video up on the website of the TGII run??

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 9:55:46 PM)
Hi Pastor Jack...I know it's been on TV a couple of times with Adelphia in the Cleveland area. That game was televised that night so that's a good thing. They replayed it about two weeks ago. I'm sure Senior still has a copy of it laying around. I can check with him.

Guest (Jul 28, 2005 9:57:20 PM)
how much will TG play CB?

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 9:57:20 PM)
ohs asks about TGII at CB and I think he could play a lot in the red zone early on in the season ... I would think that OSU would want his speed on the field against Vincent Young in the Texas game. I think as the season wears on we will see TGII in on defense more and more. I still think that will be his ultimate position in the NFL.

BuckeyeDave (Jul 28, 2005 9:58:17 PM)
What positions do Hornsby and Wallace play?

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 9:58:17 PM)
Wallace is big cornerback that could play safety and Hornsby is a receiver and defensive back.

MERLE J (Jul 28, 2005 10:02:13 PM)
Hey there, Gary! I noticed a Housteau is listed on the Youngstown Ursuline roster. Any relation? Will he be a tOSU recruit someday?

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 10:02:13 PM)
Hi Merle J...that's my nephew. My brother's son but not the brother that was on the Amazing Race earlier this year. He'll be a senior lineman but this will probably be his last year of football. Speaking of Youngstown Ursuline... Jerome Jones, better known as J.J., will not likely be on the field this year due to him being an academic casualty. His situation is still being looked into but it's not looking very good for him at this time. He may still practice with the team for a certain period of time until there is a final determination but from I've been told ... it's not promising for him at this time. Too bad! It really is.

Guest (Jul 28, 2005 10:04:17 PM)
will we take browning for OL from Gville?

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 10:04:17 PM)
ohs asked about Browning and it's possible but I don't think nothing will happen till after Smith and Brown make their intentions known either to the coaching staff in person or publically. I think Browning, Palmer and Nagy are three guys still in the mix for one more potential opening.

DuluthBuckeye (Jul 28, 2005 10:08:06 PM)
Gary, Compared to previous years, how good was the overall talent at the "33" this year?

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 10:08:06 PM)
Boy every year it's getting better and better there it seems on the Ohio side especially since the Dave Patterson and Ray Edwards year that started this three game streak. And I think it reflective witht he talent on the OSU roster right now. Really there has been some unbeliveable talent on the Ohio team over the past three years in particular. No question. I don't think overeall this year was as good as the last two years but with guys like Schoenhoft and Hartline and Robiskie and Wilson and Amos...you have some top level potential in my book.

marksgforce (Jul 28, 2005 10:10:28 PM)
Have you ever seen this much depth at OSU? (In the scholarship-limits era, of course.) Outside of RB, which should be "fixed" by next year, I can't remember this much competition for and at the two-deep.

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 10:10:28 PM)
This question kind of goes hand in hand with the last one...the Big 33 and the N/S game have had some talented players going to OSU in them recently and I know we all are looking to see how some of that depth pans out this year. But guys like Kudla and Zwick and A.J. Hawk all played in the game as well and their leadership is invaluable this year.

marksgforce (Jul 28, 2005 10:13:54 PM)
What got into JT to have a 40-minute press conference? With Big 10 media days next week, this could be something close to a miracle. Is he bored? Are all his sweater vests already ironed and laid out for each Saturday of the season?

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 10:13:54 PM)
I think it was more or less to get the word out so they won't have to deal with the Troy Smith questions in Chicago. Remember JT always has a purpose in everything he does whether we see the rhyme or reason to it or not. But I'm sure some reporter from Iowa or Wisconsin for instance will bring it up anyway. Hopfully the OSU media will do a good enough job getting the word out there.

IrishBuck (Jul 28, 2005 10:17:56 PM)
Gary, Just joining so I apologise if asked earlier, do you think tOSU offers O-Linemen Ryan Palmer, Bryant Browning, and/or Bill Nagy? Who would you favor?

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 10:17:56 PM)
Hi IrishBuck sort of touched on that question just a few minutes ago... I think all three have an outside chance...better than no chance... of getting an offer. I'm sure that Palmer and Browning would love to get an offer but I don't know Nagy nearly as well. Nagy I believe just wants to take the best offer given to him be it Ohio State or some other. I would tend to favor Nagy because he can play both sides of the ball well but I really like Palmer and Browning personally. I think Palmer as the most upside potential because he has a lot more development physically ahead of him at 6-7. You just cant teach size. Browning is as big as he's going to get and may lose weight over the years so his upside is there as well. Nagy might be the best of the three physically right now.

IrishBuck (Jul 28, 2005 10:18:45 PM)
Gary, Do you think there is any doubt about Ray Small or Robert Rose becoming Buckeyes? Is this (hopefully) a "winkable" situation? GO BUCKS!

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 10:18:45 PM)
No doubt in my eyes. Wink...Wink! It's just a matter of time.

marksgforce (Jul 28, 2005 10:22:33 PM)
Any chance that Moeller is the best linebacker from Collerain? Any betting odds on whether he'll be a Buckeye? And I hate to ask too dumb of a question, so I'll just say I'm assuming no relationship to Gary ....

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 10:22:33 PM)
I can't really comment on that because I haven't seen enough of either him or Mixon to say but I tend to think Moeller could potentially be the better of the two all around. He may even find a home in the secondary at safety at the next level but he obviously has a nose for the ball. I also assume there is no relationship to Gary Moeller or the other Moeller on the staff. I don't know that answer though and if it's already public knowledge forgive me. Hopefully I'll get to meet him if Connor Smith has any press conference on Monday to announce for OSU.

GORDONbuckeye (Jul 28, 2005 10:26:18 PM)
What is your top 5 OSU has a 90%0r better chance to land in this class?

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 10:26:18 PM)
I'm going to go out on a limb and say Rose, Small, Reuland, Wallace and Brown. That's taking the assumption that Connor Smith is already in the bag.

Guest (Jul 28, 2005 10:32:28 PM)
Hey Gary, this is my first time on. My question is, other than T. Gibson, what other LB are they looking at and how many do you see them taking?

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 10:32:28 PM)
Buckirik asks about the linebackers. I hear the Hunter from Pa. is interested but OSU may have cooled on him it sounds like. I met a good source over in Pa who tracks a lot of those guys over there. I've about given up on OOS LBs after James Bryant and Rico McCoy the past two years. I wasn't a big fan of the Erie Prep LB that went to Tennessee once I saw Ursuline run all over them last year...Andre Mathis...and he might not even be eligible someone said. I don't know anything about getting OOS guys anymore unless they're from Glades Central. I'll take that receiver they have...Thompson I think is his name. Micah Johnson looked more like a DT to me than a LB... I wouldn't get too excited about him. I saw him in San Antonio. I would take him but I don't think OSU stands a great chance with him when it comes down to it. I don't know who they might get really.

Palmer (Jul 28, 2005 10:36:18 PM)
Gary, are we still in good position with the 3 or 4 glenville kids?

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 10:36:18 PM)
I'm sure OSU would be good with about 7 or 8 Tarblooders if they had room for them. I really like Daven Jones going to Wisconsin...he's the Curtis Smith version of this year's team at Glenville but he doesn't have the burning desire to go to OSU like Smith did. I've even heard from someone who saw them in 7-on-7 this past weekend that Milligan, the safety transfer in, looks really good. This same person told me Small was just off the charts as a receiver. He evaluates Ohio players and he thinks Small might be number one in the state. Browning, Adams, Frieson, Nelson...and others would all love to come to OSU make no mistake about that.

Guest (Jul 28, 2005 10:39:54 PM)
I asked Kyle this the other day. I would like your opinion. When will the midwest have a recruiting TV show like the sout and the southwest. We need one bad. I think you guys from Bucknuts should run it

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 10:39:54 PM)
I'm all for anything that would make Bucknuts a better product for all the Bucknuts out there. I would do this 24/7 if my schedule would allow it. Unfortunately I have to work for a living in addition to what I do at Bucknuts. I've met some truly great people and players and coaches doing what I do over the years and it's just a great thing to be involved with. The more we can do the better.

Guest (Jul 28, 2005 10:44:05 PM)
If Jones is indeed ineligible for his senior year, I would have to presume OSU will not pursue him. If they cannot land Reuland, who else stands to get an offer at TE?

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 10:44:05 PM)
Merle that is a question that I really do not have an answer for at this time. People want to say Jeff Cumberland but I really don't see him as a tight end. Especially not an OSU type of tight end. I think Ballard is almost certain to evolve into an offensive lineman eventually and I don't know enough about Huffman from Massillon Washington to comment so we shall have to wait and see who else is in their sights at OSU as the recruiting season evolves.

Guest (Jul 28, 2005 10:45:16 PM)
What position do you feel Small wouid play at OSU?

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 10:45:16 PM)
Buckirik asked about Small and I would think he would be another Tony Gonzalez type slot receiver.

labuck (Jul 28, 2005 10:50:12 PM)
In your years covering the Bucks, is there a time you can remember when you turned out to be off in your evaution of the type of player they eventually became; both a player that you thought was a can't miss who never lived up to the hype as well as a player you thought was average that surprised you by the player he developed into?

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 10:50:12 PM)
Good question labuck and it requires a lot of thought... but quickly I can think of LeShun Daniels who I covered at Warren G. Harding when I wasn't covering the Buckeyes who turned out to better than I ever imagined he would be. I just thought he was a nice throw in with my main man Korey Stringer, God rest his soul, and he turned into a solid lineman in his own right at OSU. Looking at it in the other direction...I think the linebacker from Walsh Jesuit...Pat O'Neil...never panned out. He came in with Wilhelm and Pagac and he was never more than a special teamer before he left with a year of eligibility still I believe. Hows that for two quick answers.

Pastor Jack (Jul 28, 2005 10:52:22 PM)
If you were from OOS (Out Of State) and could make it to only ONE Home game this year, besides the Texas game, which one would you want to attend??

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 10:52:23 PM)
Another great question ... I guess I would Iowa unless I knew that Tyrell Sutton would be starting for Northwestern by the end of the year then I would want to be at that game. But the Texas game is one that every Buckeye fan in the country should come to...even if it takes a shoe horn to get everyone in.

IrishBuck (Jul 28, 2005 10:55:53 PM)
Gary, Will you be at Conner's press conference if he has one?

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 10:55:53 PM)
I intend to if I am certain that there is a need for me to be there and if I know when and what time ahead of time so I can make plans. If anyone knows for certain please give my e-mail to the family ...h2hsports@zoominternet.net...so someone there can make me aware of it.

labuck (Jul 28, 2005 10:57:52 PM)
What makes you think we have a 90% chance of landing Reuland? I think the schools out here beleive he is going to stay in Los Angeles either at USC with Sanchez or go to UCLA with Chane Moline.

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 10:57:52 PM)
That was my limb part of the answer...I just think he will follow the path the Williams took because he too is a lifelong Buckeye fan born in Ohio. Again please dismiss this as pure speculation on my part. I'm sure the Williams family will be recruiting him hard as they did with Bemol.

Guest (Jul 28, 2005 11:02:51 PM)
Is our "O" in your opinion going to be as explosive as we all believe including myself? Or we all blinded by fanaticism. Because really our QB play and offense as a whole stunk except for 2.5 games not including the Marshall game. On paper it does look good but man I have been saying that every year since JT has been there. Even 2002 was not an offensive juggernaut. I don't want fun and gun, just want to be able to breath easier a few more games this year.

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 11:02:51 PM)
Ohio State people are sure to get annoyed when I say something like "offensive juggernaut" is an oxy moron with JT at the helm but if it usually looks like a duck and quacks like a duck...then it's likely to be a duck. I'm a big fan of JT, he's a wonderful person and a great coach, but he's going to win football games, and a lot of them, his way. If big plays happen then they'll happen, but they're not going to be game planned into the game. OSU has enough talent however to turn the five yard hitch into a TD and an off-tackle "Dave" call into a big gainer. That's the extent of the offensive juggernaut...for the most part. Smile! Now if he starts to ever use the TE consistently then you know the offense is changing. But for the most part the TE is and always will be a blocker.

gary which games will you be going to in the first and second weeks? ...highschool

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 11:05:38 PM)
Right now slim... week one I have Garfield vs Hoban on Thursday...Glenville at Mentor on Friday and the Skyline Chili Showdown on Saturday. Join me? The second week with Glenville and Brookhaven at the same time as OSU and Miami I can't make it there but I might see Garfield and GlenOak that night. On that Friday in week two I don't know yet. I haven't planned it out yet. I will have a tentative schedule posted when I firm it up. A lot of Garfield and Glenville and St. Ignatius no question.

also any word on how tony pittman is doing this summer? i saw him play in high school....he has such great feet

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 11:06:18 PM)
Slim I hear Pittman is coming along fine but Mo Wells may be the wildcard. I think we all will be seeing a lot of him.

GaryHousteau (Jul 28, 2005 11:09:01 PM)
Guys it's at the two hour mark and I appreciate all of the questions that came my way. There are still more in queue but I have to call it a night. Thank you to those of you who participated in the chat and another big thanks to those of you who took the time to read the chat at a later time. I'm looking forward to OSU media day and then the start of the season. I can't wait. I'm about to hit the high schools while they go through their double sessions soon. So football season is officially upon us. See you here next week. Good night and Go Bucks!
