Housteau Chat: Aug. 4 Archive

Here are excerpts from Gary Housteau's Chat from Thursday night. He conducts these Chat sessions each week for Bucknuts.com subscribers. Steve Helwagen will conduct a Chat at 2 p.m. Friday.

John (Aug 4, 2005 9:17:50 PM)
Is Aaron Brown going to be a Buckeye?? Or are we going for an OOS lineman?

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 9:17:50 PM)
Hi John...It sounds like there is a good chance of that happening but Virginia Tech might have something to say about it before he decides officially on Oct. 8. No Tennesse, no Florida, no Notre Dame. It's down to six schools with OSU and Va. Tech in front. Smile!

OTC (Aug 4, 2005 9:20:40 PM)
Can you compare Small to another player so I can get an idea of how he plays?

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 9:20:41 PM)
Hi OTC thanks for waiting patiently. Small is very fast and athletic. I just Raghib Ismail in Hershey and Small sort of reminds me of him ability wise. I know that's saying a lot but he's talented. And fast. I like his football saavy.

John (Aug 4, 2005 9:22:05 PM)
Out of the Glenville trio (Rose, Small, & Browning), are we going to take all three? If not, where do you see them possibly going?

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 9:22:05 PM)
John I think we can and will get all three if all three are offered. In fact there could be four believe it or not. Two for sure. Possibly three. And maybe even four.

skeelo (Aug 4, 2005 9:22:44 PM)
have you heard any times from testing day

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 9:22:45 PM)
Hi skeelo...no I have not...sorry.

Drew Zwick (Aug 4, 2005 9:24:51 PM)
Hi Gary, I just recently viewed the video footage of Micah Johnson and was really impressed with him as a rb. He looks like the next Earl Campbell! I was shocked at his speed for how big he is. Why is he being pegged as a lb or dlineman? It seems to me he could have a great talent for rb. What are OSU's chances of landing him?

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 9:24:51 PM)
Hi Drew I met Micah Johnson in person down in San Antonio and he just looks like a defensive lineman. He's so big and I'm sure he's going to fill out more and he just struck me as an interior lineman. I haven't seen enough of him to know any better however.

Palmer (Aug 4, 2005 9:28:54 PM)
Gary, I read the article you guys posted when Chris Wells heard about the Connor Smith commitment and when they asked him who he thought had commited, he said Aaron Brown. Is that an indication of sorts that Aaron Brown will end up being a buckeye?

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 9:28:54 PM)
Hi Palmer...well after talking to Aaron's dad, there is no final decision yet so Wells couldn't know anything of the sort. Wells did say Smith mentioned something to him so he had an idea that Smith would commit at some point so maybe he was hoping that OSU would have gotten Brown as well. Brown's are going to start sending in early applications on Sept. 1 and Ohio State is one of the schools that will get an application. Brown will be enrolling in January as a 17 year old. He won't turn 18 until March. He is 6-6 1/4 and 292 pounds right now. OSU seems to be in good position to land Brown but Va. Tech is still in the game as are four other schools. If I had to guess right now...I'd say yes he will be a Buckeye. Just a guess.

skeelo (Aug 4, 2005 9:31:04 PM)
what is your evaluation of darrell johnson?

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 9:31:05 PM)
Skeelo...what a surprise player he will be to everyone this year. Very talented. He'll play QB at Mooney and be even more prolific at the position than Kyle McCarthy was last year. He's a great athlete, has a new lease on life, and could be the sleeper of the entire 2006 recruiting class around the country. I'm very high on Johnson. He was all that last year at Campbell but nobody really knew about him. And grades were a big concern but I do believe he will have a handle on it by February.

OTC (Aug 4, 2005 9:33:44 PM)
How do you see the running back position breaking down for OSU this year?

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 9:33:44 PM)
I see Pittman real strong this year OTC but I got to believe that Haw will have his moments as well. A nice one-two punch there. But Wells will make noise sooner rather than later. I see him getting carries in game one. He'll start out as the third back but the sky will be the limit for him. Both Pittman and Haw have been around so they have the early advantage over Wells...a big advantage I might add. But even Haw hasn't been spanked in a game yet. I like all three guys and even Schnittker getting a few big carries out of the one back set as well.

BuckeyeDave (Aug 4, 2005 9:36:40 PM)
Cinti-Princeton vs. Cleveland -Shaker Hts. Your call?

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 9:36:40 PM)
Hi Buckeye Dave...I don't know enough about either to say how it would go down but I like the Aaron Brown factor of course and I give the edge to Princeton...Do you mean Cleveland Glenville in a hypothetical match? If so I go with the 'Ville. They're really good. I can't wait to see Glenville and St. Ignatius play for the right to go to the state final. That is definitely a semifinal matchup. And if Colerain lives up to their end of the deal...it should be a great state final this time around.

John (Aug 4, 2005 9:39:29 PM)
Are we going to get another stud TB this year? If not, is Jordan Mabin going to be our TB in next years class?

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 9:39:29 PM)
John I don't think OSU will get another stud TB although McCoy from Pa isn't afraid of the competition at OSU...I talked to some people at the Big 33 about him...but I don't see him coming to OSU. I would really be happy with Jahmal Brown or even Delone Carter but I don't think OSU will take a chance on either of them. If they get anybody else at RB it might be from OOS. I'm a big Jahmal Brown fan. A true running back IMHO.

Palmer (Aug 4, 2005 9:41:46 PM)
Gary, who do you think our next big commitment will be?

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 9:41:46 PM)
Palmer it's hard to say because Small would be big, no pun intended, and Rose would be big also but they aren't going to commit till their visit possibly. We all take those two for granted. Brown is Oct 8th if he selects Ohio State. I'd like to Wallace after his Texas visit but he's not going to commit until January. It's hard to say right now. Probably no one until after the Texas game for sure.

John (Aug 4, 2005 9:43:15 PM)
Any new news on Thaddeus Gibson out of Euclid? I dont like Iowa sitting there, especially with their LB's getting ready to go to the league next year .

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 9:43:15 PM)
John, I stopped up Euclid when I was in Cleveland on Monday but no one was there. I just took a chance because of my time schedule. I really think if he has his grades where they need to be, and I think he will, Gibson is at OSU. Forget about Iowa or anyone else.

Guest (Aug 4, 2005 9:45:03 PM)
Does ray small's "football" speed and moves even approach ted ginn's, in your opinion?

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 9:45:03 PM)
Hi Drew...that's an easy answer...NO! In Ginn we are privileged to see one of the best that we may ever see roam the 'Shoe. Maybe ever. And remember...he just gets better and better on every stage he performs. He's truly an amazing young person with a tremendous life ahead of him.

Guest (Aug 4, 2005 9:47:49 PM)
Gary, Sorry I just got in correctly. Any word on whether Haw's little incident this summer will keep him off the field?

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 9:47:49 PM)
Hi loopman...Glad you got in. I don't see his transgression causing any loss of playing time other than being beat out for minutes by his competition. But I think he will pay a price in conditioning. I saw Haw at the North-South game and he looked pretty big. A lot bigger than the first time I met him in the summer before his senior season. And he still can run. So go figure. Once he and Pittman and M. Wells for that matter get their confidence this year... look out... give any of them a seam and it's good bye charlie.

osubuckfan (Aug 4, 2005 9:51:43 PM)
good evening gary, do you think either of the freshmen DE's get a real shot to contribute this year. I know probably not early, but by years end?

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 9:51:43 PM)
Hi osubuckfan...I start off by saying that I like Lawrence as a person and a young man as much as any recruit that I've gotten to known. Super kid. I think he has a ways to go until he reaches the potential that he has so I don't see him doing it this year. He hasn't really dominated opponents in HS or in the All star games. He's good but he needs a year or two still. Worthington has some things going on. I saw him play pretty well against Iggy last year so I think he might have a chance to play early if any of the three. I don't know enough about Williams but the program he's from makes him a solid prospect for sure. But I think he redshirts as well. Him and Wilson.

merle j (Aug 4, 2005 9:54:45 PM)
Gary, did it surprise you to hear that Elzy verballed to UNC?

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 9:54:45 PM)
Hi merle j no not really because I think it was just a case of looking what was out there for him combined with the fact that he wanted to concentrate on his senior season and presto...he took the NC ship. I think if he has a tremendous year he might have second thoughts but I think he's comfortable doing what he did. So no I'm not surprised. I think his size and the team's competition level might have a little to do with it. But he's a good one no question. And a fine individual as well. Good kid and good student.

osubuckfan (Aug 4, 2005 9:57:40 PM)
gary, chad hoobler is such a beast. We gotta get him on the field. Thoughts?

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 9:57:40 PM)
I agree Buckfan...when I think of Hoobler he might have actually been one of the best two-way players I ever watched in high school. He could play TE and LB equally well. He's a football player and a beast as you say. PT will be hard to come by though. I hear the staff likes Freeman, D'Andrea and even one of my old favorites Kerr a lot in addition to the top three. I really think you will see all six on the field a lot. Hoobler might have another year of garbage time unfortunately ahead of him but he'll get better and better. BTW TGII was a really good two-way player as well. Really good.

OTC (Aug 4, 2005 10:02:02 PM)
Any camp battles you are really looking at this year other than the Zwick/Smith/Boeckman qb battle?

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 10:02:02 PM)
Running back of course. We'll know if there will be a QB battle after the Miami game or not. Again put me in the camp that thinks Zwick will be much improved over where he was one year ago. Smith definitely hurt himself but he'll be battling right there for playing time in week two. Zwick could really have the upper hand if he plays well against Miami however. I like Boeckman too but I don't see him being thrown in there in meaningful minutes until later in the year when he's had a chance to maybe mop up a game or two. I like CB battle and think Everett will be a great piece there. But a lot of the other positions are mostly accounted for already.

jeff (Aug 4, 2005 10:05:44 PM)
How does Brian Hartline deal with the fact that his brother won't be offered a schlorship when he seems to be such a good QB, especially when he sees another brother combo in the Jordans (from OOS) get offered? Any hard feelings that will affect him at OSU?

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 10:05:44 PM)
Hi Jeff...I chatted with Brian some in Hershey and we talked about that and he thinks Mike will be fine with whatever decision he makes and so will Brian. Of course Brian believes in his brother and would love to see him go to OSU but it's not in the cards right now. If I were Brian I would wait as long as I could to make a decision and see what his senior season brings him. But Brian will show up at Ohio State regardless..you can count on that.

Drew Zwick (Aug 4, 2005 10:08:41 PM)
Gary, I agree with you 100% on zwick -- have you talked with him recently or gotten any inside info on how he's preparing for what a lot of fans have called his "last big shot at OSU?"

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 10:08:41 PM)
No I haven't spoken with him recently. I knew Justin pretty well before he went to Ohio State and I respect him tremendously but I'll wait to talk to him at media day next week. I might check with a few sources who know him well before then but I've keep it at arms length with him for a while now. I'm just glad to know that OSU has two experienced QB's at their disposal this year. That's a good thing.

jeff (Aug 4, 2005 10:09:49 PM)
Oops, on my last question, I meant Devon Lyons and Wes Lyons (at least I think that is their last names).....

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 10:09:49 PM)
I understand where you were coming from and if Mike was a wide receiver that might change it a little bit but no Brian will be ready to go no matter where his brother or Devon's brother goes after next year.

BigDBuckeye (Aug 4, 2005 10:13:37 PM)
Evening Gary. Injuries aside, how many O-Linemen do you see getting serious playing time this year. Seems like we're deep enough to rotate 10 or more in throughout each game.

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 10:13:38 PM)
Hi BigDBuckeye...I believe OSU will take three or possibly even four this year. Let's just say OSU could land Smith, Brown and Browning...that's all they would need. Smith could play guard, Brown tackle and Browning could play center or guard. I don't put much stock in getting a guy like Walton in the end but I guess OSU is obviously very interested in him. I think they take three at a minimum.

Drew Zwick (Aug 4, 2005 10:16:43 PM)
Staying on the subject of zwick Tressel seemed to have a lot of confidence in zwick's arm early on last year. Even in the cincinatti game we had a lot of shotgun and 3 wr sets. Now with an experienced zwick do you think we will see a lot of passing setting up the run in the miami game?

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 10:16:43 PM)
The team was night and day from what Zwick had to work with in the beginning of the year, with the team that he led at the Alamo Bowl. The ironic thing is if Zwick didn't get that chance to shine in the Bowl game, thanks to Smith, it would be a non-issue at this time. Smith only has himself to thank for the situation being what it is today. But I thought Zwick acquitted himself tremendously with a new team at his disposal. And that pass to Santonio Holmes against Marshall was pretty special no matter what the circumstances. Again I'm glad OSU has two veteran QBs to choose from this year and next.

tony2246 (Aug 4, 2005 10:19:35 PM)
Hi Gary, What have you heard about Nick Patterson. He was a player that seemed like a great kid when they recruited him last year.

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 10:19:35 PM)
Hi tony2246...I like Nick Patterson a lot and I think he might see some PT this year as a redshirt freshman. With Everett moving out to corner, that puts Patterson in play sooner than even he was probably expecting. I think this year could set him up well for next season when Salley is no longer on board. He's a name we will hear some from this year.

skeelo (Aug 4, 2005 10:21:49 PM)
gary i am hearing that beokman will be given every oppourtunity to start the miami game.

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 10:21:49 PM)
I hear you skeelo...I hear it from some people who are very close to the situation as well. But again...unless Zwick totally flops in camp or against Miami, whith Smith coming back in week two...I just think it's senseless to have him go through the inevitable growing pains with this championship caliber team. Wait for another year or two and then battle Schoenhoft for the job. That's a good battle there. But Boeckman should be given every opportunity to start against Miami. No question.

grimes (Aug 4, 2005 10:25:09 PM)
Hi Gary, Is it my imagination or does recruiting seem to be more selective and a bit less speculative and hectic as compared to years past? For example less Fred Davis-Derrick Morrris-Buster Davis type " drama".

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 10:25:09 PM)
More selective no doubt. I think it's pretty amazing that the early offers came and left and we're all still waiting on the second round of offers...at least in state. I guess they're content until they see how some of the OOS guys pan out now. It was good to see Moeller get an offer so maybe things will start to pickup now that the season is here. Can't wait. I'm one who would rather have guys that really want to be Buckeyes instead of waiting on the OOS state crowd...unless they have strong ties to Ohio State.

BigDBuckeye (Aug 4, 2005 10:28:25 PM)
I was actually referring to our current team - did you get my question mixed up with another?

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 10:28:25 PM)
I'm sorry I must of gotten it mixed up with a recruiting question..my bad. I think we will see Sims, Downing, Mangold, Datish and Barton of course....Kyle Mitchum, Rhering, Person, Skinner, Cordle and Boone all get some PT as well. Again sorry about that BigDBuckeye.

BigDBuckeye (Aug 4, 2005 10:29:34 PM)
Any chance Henton (or any other QB we take this year) will go the grayshirt route for more separation from Boeckman and Schoenhoft?

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 10:29:34 PM)
I haven't heard that at all BigDBuckeye.

jeff (Aug 4, 2005 10:32:23 PM)
When do you think we will hear about Mike D'Andrea getting or even wanting an extra year for the medical redshirt? I sure would like to have him next year assuming he can stay healthy.

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 10:32:23 PM)
Jeff...unless he has an unbelieveable season and I don't think he can because Schlegel is going to play a lot as well, then he just might want and need another year to play. I'm sure he's disappointed in his career up to this point but he still has time to turn the ship around and be a hot NFL commodity at some point. He still has that legendary work ethic and has a burning desire to succeed so we shall see about that fifth year after he this year. But yes he has to stay healthy.

Drew Zwick (Aug 4, 2005 10:35:33 PM)
Are the coaches at this point really expecting Everett to take over the cb spot or do you think that O'neal was a real legitimate chance to take the spot?

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 10:35:33 PM)
I think O'Neal has a shot but when they see him hitting people with pads on like Mike Doss did as a freshman, they may change their thinking. Everett could be a big play maker at corner and solidify the secondary without having to rely on any freshmen. Sirjo Welch and Shaun Lane are also possibilities there if Everett doesn't pan out there. I think he will.

BigDBuckeye (Aug 4, 2005 10:36:29 PM)
Speaking of our linebacking corps, how often do you think we'll se a four LB look?

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 10:36:29 PM)
More than people think...and the potential rotation of the players might be surprising too if what my sources are telling me should come to fruition.

Drew Zwick (Aug 4, 2005 10:38:50 PM)
I'm puzzled by the offer at this point to Henton. Wouldn't the glenville qb provide the same type of "troy smith" ability AND more size?

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 10:38:50 PM)
Zwick...I hate to be a downer but Nelson isn't that kind of player. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if Bryant Milligan and even Gino Sturdivant get there fair share of reps at Glenville this year. Milligan is a two-way stud pick up for the Tarblooders from University School in Cleveland. Free Saftey and receiver but he could also play some at QB...wait until you see this kid play.

BigDBuckeye (Aug 4, 2005 10:41:14 PM)
What would be your strategy to slow down a guy like V. Young. Will a LB or two spy him all game?

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 10:41:14 PM)
I think a few early shots from Kudla and Pitcock might do it. I'm certain that it won't be Vincent Young on the ground that beats Ohio State if they do. That's why I don't see it happening. OSU will shut him down with great play up front and even better linebacking play.

tony2246 (Aug 4, 2005 10:43:35 PM)
Are we still looking at taking another quarterback? It looks like we still have an offer on the table for Betsy (I might be wrong on the spelling).

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 10:43:35 PM)
I give up on the QB position. I too don't understand the early offer to Henton but I don't question their strategy. I would keep one eye on Hartline however this year incase he plays really big.

Palmer (Aug 4, 2005 10:46:17 PM)
Gary, I have a kind of out of the box question....Everyone talks about how intense the University of Miami (FL) training program is. If you can, compare OSU's to Miami's

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 10:46:18 PM)
I can't speak to Miami's program but I know how it was at YSU when JT was there and I have few people there at OSU now that know what the program is all about. OSU's training year round doesn't take a back seat to anyone's I have to believe.

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 10:49:04 PM)
With that we will call it a night. Thanks for the participation by all of you night owls tonight. I'm glad to spend quality time with you trying to answer your questions. And thanks also to everyone for reading through the chat at a later time. The next time we chat OSU will be in camp and so will high school football players across the state. Good night and God bless.

Guest (Aug 4, 2005 10:50:00 PM)
Gary, I have to believe that with the size and strength that Mangold has put on and the experience he got from playin against Miami in the championship game that he should be the best center in the country! If he could handle that Miami front than there isnt many others that he cant handle

GaryHousteau (Aug 4, 2005 10:50:00 PM)
Great observation Palmer...I'll have to agree with you. Good night.
