How jacked up are you for this coming season?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:09:42 PM)
I am ready. The players check in Sunday and get to work. The season starts 4 weeks from tomorrow. I'm doing a slow burn (ha ha).
JimC (Aug 5, 2005 2:09:47 PM)
I just wanted to say that it's great that coach Conley is back!!! Kudos to Bucknuts.
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:11:02 PM)
Yes, I think he'll have a hard time matching that first column. I heard him tell that story at a fund raiser and urged him to write it all out. That was great. He has a ton of stories like that and I understand he is self-publishing a book with some of them. Should be great. He'll have another column next Wed. and a Chat on the 15th at 3 p.m.

Will Tyler Moeller be a buckeye? Any chance Smith can convince Mixon to rethink things?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:11:40 PM)
Moeller is probably torn between OSU and Iowa and also hoping for a Tenn. offer. I'd say they have about 33 percent shot. No chance on Mixon. He seems sold on UM.
cderekw (Aug 5, 2005 2:11:43 PM)
Steve, Any word on Haw's punishment other than the extra running, drills, etc?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:12:36 PM)
No word, doesn't sound like he'll miss any playing time. I imagine he will or has done some extra duty with the strength staff.
osubuck1 (Aug 5, 2005 2:12:47 PM)
Seems like there are a few players from Florida that we're in on that aren't ranked nationaly. Has scout not finished the florida rankings yet?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:13:39 PM)
I'm not sure. I think they're going position by position. They may only be 15 or 20 deep at each spot, then will go back and do the next 15 or 20, I imagine. Like Henton, they gave him 3 stars, but he's not in their top 20 QBs. Maybe he'll move up with a big senior year.
edbuck51 (Aug 5, 2005 2:13:43 PM)
USC started practice this week but there first game is the same day as ours. Doesn't it make sense they would both start at the same time?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:15:03 PM)
I'm sure there are rules that apply. OSU, for example, took last week off from conditioning, then used this week as the final week of conditioning, leading into practice next week. Different way to do it. So, although the players are around at USC, it may still just be conditioning. I dunno. NCAA may just say you get so many days and USC is spreading them out, too. Again, I'm not sure exactly how it works.
buckguy (Aug 5, 2005 2:15:12 PM)
just curious if you would know where to get tickets for the ohio vs texas high school game? do we go to columbus crew stadium or what
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:15:41 PM)
Here's the ticket info: Tickets for the McDonald’s Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge will be available to the public beginning August 11 through Ticketmaster and participating National City locations. Tickets are $15 in advance, and $20 the day of the event. A ticket is good for both games. Fans in Tyler may also purchase tickets at the Tyler ISD Athletic Office.

Any updates on potential fullback prospects?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:16:27 PM)
There was a hot news on Hunter Haines, the kid from St. Augustine (Fla.) Nease who was at camp. Maybe he is in the running.
osubuck1 (Aug 5, 2005 2:17:09 PM)
Aaron Brown, what are the odds that we land him?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:18:20 PM)
He has visits with OSU, Auburn, Louisville, Va. Tech and Miami (Fla.). My guess is OSU would have the slightest of edges just by proximity, etc. Probably 30-40 percent at this stage.
redondo (Aug 5, 2005 2:18:32 PM)
Hi Steve - Any further insights on the Scout acquisition? My layperson perspective is that it could be really good for the enterprise providing additional "fire power" and allowing Scout to leave the "Brand X's" in the dust.
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:20:08 PM)
Well, we hope on all counts. My initial feeling is this energizes our product. We will get use of Fox's video technology. Fox also has its Fox Sports Net affiliates. The hope is we will get some oomph on FSN Ohio, maybe with a TV show or promotion during their live events like Reds, Indians, CBJ and Cavs as well as the various OSU programming they'll have. They have a vested interest in promoting it because they own it.
osubuck1 (Aug 5, 2005 2:20:16 PM)
Browning, Palmer, Nagy, do we offer any of these guys? If so who has the best chance?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:20:48 PM)
I think Browning may be the guy. I think Nagy could get a look as a two-way lineman, maybe like a Schafer. Palmer remains a strong candidate as well.
JimC (Aug 5, 2005 2:20:55 PM)
Steve, Are there any Bucknut tailgate parties at home games this year?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:21:21 PM)
We are working on something for Texas, maybe an event that would run 2-7 p.m. When we get more details, we'll let you know.
osubuck1 (Aug 5, 2005 2:21:26 PM)
what coach do you think does the best recruiting job in the big ten?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:21:31 PM)
Great question ...
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:23:12 PM)
Michigan, year in and year out, is at or near the top in the Big Ten rankings and they do it by going outside the state because Michigan is devoid (comparatively speaking) of talent. OSU, obviously, does a great job. Iowa is also in the top three in this category. Maybe you give them the edge because they've found the right mix of guys to crash the party at the top.
osubuck1 (Aug 5, 2005 2:23:18 PM)
Does Schaefer see significant playing time at DT this year?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:25:12 PM)
I thought so. But when they produced the fall two-deep, they had Cotton in his place as a backup. It will come down to who gets the job done in practice and the early games, though.
osubuck1 (Aug 5, 2005 2:25:32 PM)
Seems like we have quite a few receiver prospects again this year, how many do we take?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:29:21 PM)
They have Chichester in the class and have offers to Ausberry, Slaughter, Baskin and Bryan Thomas, Wesley Lyons and Devin Parrish. Plus, Jeff Cumberland may check out at some point. I bet they take up to 3.
TexasBuckeye (Aug 5, 2005 2:29:36 PM)
Just a note and not a question and I always look forward to these sessions and the great job you do with them. The media hype here in Texas is really getting out of hand concerning UT and Vince Young. I expect next to read that the Buckeyes will not be able to tackle VY because he can broad jump from one end zone to the other and on top of that he is invisible when he takes the field. I can't wait for the game so I won't have to hear any more of this biased and nonsensical UT HYPE!! GO BUCKS
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:30:56 PM)
He is 6-5, 230 and runs like a deer (ha ha). This is going to be a tough match-up, no doubt. I just watched some of those Rose Bowl highlights and UM guys just bounced off of him. Nobody got a clean hit. It will take 1-1/2 guys to bring him down.
edbuck51 (Aug 5, 2005 2:31:01 PM)
Is the idea of not broadcasting the Colrain vs. Lee game to encourage people to go to games in person locally versus sitting at home and watching the tube?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:32:57 PM)
Yes, that is what the whole controversy is about. For years, state associations in nearly every state banned live TV broadcasts of prep games on Friday night. The obvious inference is people sitting at home aren't going to their local school and everybody's gate suffers. OHSAA has granted an exception here with this 9 p.m. start. They are gambling that people will still go to their game at 7:30, then get home at 10 to see the end of this one. Texas, of course, is saying no. Keep in mind, the broadcast would start at 8 there, so people may forego their game to watch this one, that has been hyped.
hondo (Aug 5, 2005 2:33:19 PM)
Steve, I asked Duane this on the message board and I never seen a response. My question is can someone from Bucknuts call Navorro Bowman and find out where we are in the mix for him?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:35:22 PM)
From the Hot News at the top of the page: “I just really narrowed it down to about five or six schools: Penn State, Ohio State, North Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, and Virginia Tech." We will be trying to get in touch with him.
ohs (Aug 5, 2005 2:35:35 PM)
Are Brown and Gibson commits a sure thing?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:35:54 PM)
No, I would not say that at all. I think OSU is in great shape with each, though.
rbuck (Aug 5, 2005 2:35:57 PM)
Have you heard the rumor the President Bush will be at the Shoe for the Horns game? Any truth to that?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:36:51 PM)
My experience is the president's schedule is fluid (especially in a time of war). We may get a better feel a week out or so from the game. If he's coming, be prepared for long security lines.
osubuck1 (Aug 5, 2005 2:36:57 PM)
We have only offered 35 players so far, does that seem low? Michigan already has almost 60 offers on the table
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:38:05 PM)
There may be more offers out there than we have listed in the data base. I don't think that number is low. I have no idea how many verbals/scholarships UM has. OSU has room for 20 and has 7 verbals already in. That's just 13 spots. They will certainly offer more players in the months ahead. They'll fill their class, I'm sure.
TexasBuckeye (Aug 5, 2005 2:38:09 PM)
Is there any new information on Reuland, Perez, Ausberry, Wallace, Slaughter or Baskin ?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:39:09 PM)
Reuland is at OSU today (at least that was his sked, then his family will be out for a while). Ausberry still has OSU high on his list, as does Wallace. I'm working on Slaughter to get an update. No idea on Perez or Baskin.

SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:39:46 PM)
It's going to be on ESPNU but very few people have that. No idea if ONN or somebody will try and pick it up.
buckguy (Aug 5, 2005 2:39:58 PM)
any thoughts on who or when the next commitment may be? with camp arriving i dont feel they will be too concerned about recruits for another month or so.....
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:41:39 PM)
No idea who would be next. We usually do see 1-2 verbals around the start of camp.
osubuck1 (Aug 5, 2005 2:41:50 PM)
Hartline seems ilke a lost cause now, any chances we take another qb in this class?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:42:53 PM)
I doubt it. Henton may be the only one. Hartline may wait until he can earn it with a great senior year. We'll see.
osubuck1 (Aug 5, 2005 2:42:56 PM)
Will Chris Wells be our lone running back recruit this year?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:43:15 PM)
No, they need another TB to build up the depth and would also like to have a FB, too.
osubuck1 (Aug 5, 2005 2:43:27 PM)
If you could enter the draft any time as a college player, where do you think Ted Ginn would have gone after his freshman year?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:44:53 PM)
That's hard to say. I think pro scouts would love his measurables, but would also see a guy who is maybe 180 or 185. He needs to be a little stronger to withstand the punishment in the NFL. On his potential as a game breaker, maybe late first already. With every play he makes, he'll inch up toward the top 10, probably.
osubuck1 (Aug 5, 2005 2:44:57 PM)
Have they settled on a starting offensive line yet? If so who are the 5 guys
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:45:43 PM)
The 4 returning guys who finished the year -- LT Sims, LG Downing, C Mangold and RT Barton and Datish comes back in at RG in place of Kne. But probably 7-9 guys will play.
Palmer (Aug 5, 2005 2:45:57 PM)
Steve, if we were to get Aaron Brown along with Smith, how do you see these guys lining up on the field with Alex Boone already there and Steve Rehring as well? Would there be a chance that one of them moves over to play guard?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:46:06 PM)
Sure, they would find a way for the best 5 to play.
redondo (Aug 5, 2005 2:46:16 PM)
Steve - The hype machine on ND recruiting is in high gear. What's your sense of the "yield" particulalrly in Ohio. From reading the boards, it seems like they are getting some nice commitments, but not a tremendous number of difference makers. Your take?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:47:16 PM)
Agreed, they are getting some guys who can be solid college players. We'll see whether Weis can be the one to get the difference makers. Their academic standards, as we've seen for the last 12 years, make it awful hard.
osubuck1 (Aug 5, 2005 2:47:56 PM)
where can we look at the fall 2-deep?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:49:04 PM)
Here's what OSU has in their media guide: SE Holmes-Hall, LT Sims-Rehring, LG Downing-Conroy, C Mangold-Cordle, RG Datish-Tyree, RT Barton-Winner, TE Hamby-Nicol, FL Ginn-Gonzalez, QB Zwick-Smith, TB Pittman-Haw, FB Schnittker-White ...
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:49:24 PM)
About the only surprise was at center, where Winner was the backup. They've moved him to tackle, I guess.
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:50:47 PM)
DE Richardson or Patterson, LT Green-Cotton, RT Pitcock-Penton, DE Kudla-Gholston, WLB Hawk-Terry, MLB Schlegel or D'Andrea, SLB Carpenter-Freeman, CB Youboty-Welch, CB Everett-Lane, FS Salley-Mitchell, SS Whitner-Patterson, K Huston, P Trapasso, LS Norman.
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:51:10 PM)
The surprise here was Cotton instead of Schafer.
osubuck1 (Aug 5, 2005 2:52:06 PM)
Harry Betsey puts us and Georgia Tech as his top two schools. Is he a true quarterback, or more of an athlete type? He didn't have a great 40 time. What are your thoughts on him?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:52:46 PM)
I'm at a loss. I don't know why they would take another QB this year with Boeckman, Schoenhoft and Henton all in the fold.
osubuck1 (Aug 5, 2005 2:52:56 PM)
AJ Wallace, who is the favorite, and where do we stand?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:54:17 PM)
His top schools are Nebraska, Ohio State, Michigan, LSU, Oklahoma, Florida, Florida State and Miami. He visits OSU 9/10 and Oklahoma in Oct. I think he had a good unofficial visit for the all-star game. We'll see how the official one goes.
euphorbia (Aug 5, 2005 2:54:28 PM)
Hi Steve, I know it's easy to get caught up in the Texas game, but what about Miami? What are three keys to a buckeye win? And (say it ain't so) three keys to a Miami victory?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:56:43 PM)
Key to victory against Miami is not self destructing. OSU has the size and athletic ability to beat Miami about 95 times out of 100 if they played. But if the Buckeyes are careless and turn the ball over and commit bad penalties, they will open the door for a veteran MAC team. Three keys to a Miami victory? Establish the run (good luck with that), big plays with Betts at QB (he did throw for 3,500 yards last year ... egads) and create breaks and capitalize on them. I see OSU easing away for a comfortable 31-14 win, something like that. Should be a nice game.
osubuck1 (Aug 5, 2005 2:57:08 PM)
BBALL question. Now with Young off the board, what are the chances we get either Macklin or Morgan?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:57:53 PM)
Macklin says OSU is not among his top 3 or 4 now, either. Looks like it will be Morgan or nothing. That's fine, though, with Lauderdale and Koufos in the next class.
osubuck1 (Aug 5, 2005 2:58:03 PM)
Who is the best high school player in Ohio, you've ever seen in person?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 2:59:07 PM)
Maybe Alex Boone, pretty dominating. I don't think I ever saw Ginn in person. The O'Neal highlight tape is incredible. Covering OSU I don't get to a lot of high school games.
osubuck1 (Aug 5, 2005 2:59:13 PM)
Biggest recruiting mistake by the Tressel camp?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 3:01:52 PM)
Recruiting Derek Morris. I'd say Maurice Clarett, but they did win a national championship with him. Morris had trouble written all over him. I don't think they've had a lot of misses. They would have been villified if they had not signed D'Andrea, and that hasn't turned out that great, either, because of injuries. Hard to believe between these 3 All-USA guys, they have gotten one good useable season (and a whole bunch of heartache).
osubuck1 (Aug 5, 2005 3:02:09 PM)
Seems like Text messages are the new rage, do you see the NCAA putting limitations on this?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 3:03:01 PM)
They might if people think it's being abused. Like Coach Tressel says, abuse brings control.
Palmer (Aug 5, 2005 3:03:06 PM)
How many recruits do you expect to be at the Texas game?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 3:03:28 PM)
Probably 30-40, maybe more. Probably a lot of key underclassmen, too.
buckguy (Aug 5, 2005 3:03:47 PM)

SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 3:05:03 PM)
ESPN2 has Pitt-Ohio U. at 8 p.m. that night and ESPN has Washington State-Nevada at 10 p.m., so unless they replay it in the middle of the night it won't be on either of those channels.

is this the best offensive team we've had since 95, or will next year be better?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 3:05:47 PM)
The 98 offense was real good too with Germaine. 95 was the best I've seen. I'd say closer to 98 than 95. They need to show us first, I guess.
redondo (Aug 5, 2005 3:06:17 PM)
Hi Steve - Given the current commitment list, what position needs the most "shoring up" from a recruiting perspective from this point forward for this upcoming class?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 3:09:43 PM)
Probably DT, FB, maybe 1-2 OL and 1 more TB, 1 great LB. Those are the 3-4 areas that probably need the most help. They seem set at QB, WR, TE, DE, S and CB.
osubuck1 (Aug 5, 2005 3:09:47 PM)

SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 3:10:21 PM)

redondo (Aug 5, 2005 3:11:27 PM)
Hi Steve - What sense do you get of the coaching staff's comfort level with Todd B.? From reading JT's comments earlier this week, it seemed like JT is pretty comfortable with him, given he has no live action experience.
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 3:13:54 PM)
Yep, it sounds like Boeckman will play at some point for Miami. Good for him. He's waited a while for this chance. Would be nice if he gave them a good spark.
TexasBuckeye (Aug 5, 2005 3:14:14 PM)
The ground game has always been integral to success in football and especially so in the history of tOSU. This year, with a bevy of very good receivers, a mobile quarterback potential, and not a group of proven or experienced running backs do you see us going to more of a spread attack and passing sets? What are your thoughts on the ground game potential with the O-line and the RB's we have at this time?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 3:17:08 PM)
No, they need to establish the run. That has been proven time and time again. Purdue lost an outright Big Ten title in 2000 when they could not run the ball on a rainy crappy day at MSU, an MSU team that wasn't any good, too. They know they can run the spread and get the ball to Holmes, Ginn, Gonzalez, Hall, Lyons, Dukes, Hamby and Frost. They NEED to establish Pittman as a 20-carry-a-game guy and Haw (power), Schnittker (power) and Wells (speed) as the change-up backs. They NEED the complete package to win every game on the schedule. A partial package (great at spread, mediocre at run) will not cut it.
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 3:17:40 PM)
Are there any more questions today?
gemcityroth82 (Aug 5, 2005 3:18:18 PM)
how is zwick's confidence?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 3:18:58 PM)
I assume sky high after that bowl game performance. The spring game wasn't much to write home about, but the conditions were terrible. He is the guy -- at least for now. They need him to come through.
grimes (Aug 5, 2005 3:20:21 PM)
Hi, just got in. I was wondering your thoughts on the grass field in the Shoe. I feel it is a recruiting advantage and injury prevention advantage ( although not as much as in the past.). Do you think it might help to point out that their is nothing like reall grass from a safety standpoint?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 3:21:32 PM)
I agree, in this era of fake grass, Ohio State still plays on the real stuff. The fake stuff they are designing now is actually pretty soft. They haven't come up with that many knee problems on it (yet), either, which is good.
itstime (Aug 5, 2005 3:21:38 PM)

Barton, Boone and Cordle seem good bets for 07. Beyond them maybe Mitchum, Connor Smith, Person. I dunno.
skryp (Aug 5, 2005 3:23:33 PM)
How much of a field position advantage do we get everytime someone punts the ball out of bounds or kicks it short in order to avoid Ginn and Holmes? Will we see something like a 10-15 yard advantage for us? Of course it is better than Ginn and Holmes taking it to the house--from the opponent's perspective.
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 3:24:13 PM)
Yep, it means a lot. I'm sure some teams will stubbornly kick to them anyway. But it should mean a lot over the course of a game or a year if they get an added 10-15 yards per punt.
osubuck1 (Aug 5, 2005 3:24:16 PM)

Both new, I believe. The kicker is definitely lightly used, not sure about the punter.

jowags32 (Aug 5, 2005 3:27:57 PM)
How do you feel Ty Everett will do at cb?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 3:29:29 PM)
I think he'll be fine. He has good to great football instincts and a ton of experience at safety and as the nickel, which is a lot of times like a third corner. I think he'll do fine there. Again, it's the boundary corner. He'll be afforded some help. He just needs to read and react like Fox did and, above all, make tackles before plays slip out the gate.

That's about it this year.

Are you concerned about the constant shuffling of safeties to CBs?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 3:34:29 PM)
No, not if it helps them win. The Fox move worked well. He never gave up a TD in a game they lost in his last 3 years.

Do you think the coaches are gameplanning for texas or are they concentrating soley on miami. I know they and the players say miami, but do you think the coaches have been taking a sneaky peak at texas as well?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 3:36:45 PM)
Over the course of the off-season, they do film study on all of their opponents. They have to have some of that work done, then tweak it based on what they see on this year's tape. So the coaches and players have been privy to Texas tape. Their focus starting Monday will be on themselves and fundamentals and preseason camp. Then it will gradually turn to game planning for Miami about 10 days out. They need to beat Miami first. I agree with the line from Jerry Rudzinski: The best way to prepare for Texas is to prepare for Miami and play well and beat Miami.

That's 90 minutes. Anything else???

Last year there was a lot of talk about the number of recruits that actually came for visits. It seems like this year is shaping up the same way. Should we expect this trend to continue from JT? Was this his mode of operation at YSU? It seems to drive many B'nuts crazy but seems to be working.
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 3:39:51 PM)
I have no idea why they switched their focus as they did. The complaints were they weren't in on as many kids as they needed to be late in the process. Maybe the tradeoff is they can give the kids they spotlight much more attention and have a better shot at them. But it is a new strategy. One year isn't enough of a sample. It is strange that the offer list is not all that long. But they only have 13 more spots to fill.

Starting QB versus Texas IYHO?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 3:41:33 PM)
It will be Justin Zwick. Barring something unforseen, of course. If he gets dinged against Miami, Coach Tressel will do the best thing for the group and go with Troy Smith. But if Zwick is upright and does anything positive at all against Miami, he gets the nod. That's for a lot of reasons -- sending the right message, loyalty for Zwick, etc.

End of the game QB versus Texas IYHO?
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 3:42:37 PM)
But make no mistake, Smith will play. Whoever is most effective will finish the game and start from that point on.

Who are LB in a 3 - 4 alignment this year ? Will speed dictate faster LB
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 3:44:16 PM)
If they go 3-4, D'Andrea would certainly be in there. Freeman will also get some plays.
grimes (Aug 5, 2005 3:45:04 PM)
I was thinking Schleigel is out in that alaignment
SteveHelwagen (Aug 5, 2005 3:45:24 PM)
With 4 LBs in the game? They'll play the best 4, I would think. He's in that group.
