Is there any word out on the Rueland visit? Do you think they will wait on him before they do anything at TE from a recruiting standpoint this year?
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:09:11 PM)
I have heard nothing yet. I suspect that they have little choice. Reuland will make his decision when he makes his decision. Cumberland needs to work on his grades. I don't think they ahve any choice but to wait.
OSUBucks22 (Aug 8, 2005 2:09:18 PM)
Hi Duane... Any word on any more in-state O-Liners getting offers?
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:09:45 PM)
Nothing new on the OLs.
freshmanbuck (Aug 8, 2005 2:09:53 PM)
Will OSU be able to receive any commits from California this year?
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:11:04 PM)
I suspect they want Reuland badly. We will see on Schwartz. I will believe Ausberry goes anywhere but USC when the LOI comes through the fax machine.
jsbuckeye (Aug 8, 2005 2:11:14 PM)
Do you think Brian Hartline will be redshirted or will get some time at least on special teams??
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:12:12 PM)
I think he redshirts. There are 4 players there that could play anywhere in the country. He would not see enough reps for it to be worth it.
OSUBucks22 (Aug 8, 2005 2:12:19 PM)
What kind of a shot do we have at Tyler Moeller?
edbuck51 (Aug 8, 2005 2:12:24 PM)
If we don't get T. Gibson, does that concern you considering where we stand with other big name LBs. What about Moeller?
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:13:36 PM)
I think the Buckeyes stand a a good shot. The longer he waits the better. He may feel snubbed because the home school came in late. The longer he waits the more he gets over it.
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:13:59 PM)
Gibson's biggest fight is with grades. I think he comes this way if he is eligible and I expect him to be.
fairbornlawyer (Aug 8, 2005 2:14:05 PM)
With the amazing corps of linebackers OSU currently has it seems odd, but don't the Bucks have to address LBs heavily in recruiting to replenish the quality and depth void that is about to occur?
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:15:00 PM)
I think they have been. Last year with the Mikes and now this year the net is cast long and wide.
highlander133 (Aug 8, 2005 2:15:11 PM)
Duane, care to pick an incoming freshman that will stand out this year? Maybe Jamario?
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:16:03 PM)
Lawrence Wilson. Alex Boone and maybe Maurice Wells.
OSUBucks22 (Aug 8, 2005 2:16:10 PM)
Is Aaron Brown's recruitment as confusing to you as it is to me? Where do you think we stand with him?
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:17:05 PM)
I have always believed Brown would end up in Columbus.
BuckeyeDave (Aug 8, 2005 2:17:23 PM)
One of the posters on the Ask the Insiders board suggested that this year might be a good year for D'Andrea to redshirt. Especially given the amount of LB talent will lose at the end of this season. It looks like there may be an opportunity for D'Andrea to get significant PT next season if he RS this season. Your thoughts?
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:19:02 PM)
Why? What has he done that makes it desirable to have him redshirt. I have seen more out of Hoobler and would rather see Spitler and Laurinatis getting those reps than a 5th year senior.
footballishere (Aug 8, 2005 2:19:30 PM)
Is there any truth to the rumor that against Texas the Bucks will play a lot of 3-4, with the line being Kudla-Pitcock-Carpenter and the LBs being Hawk-Hoobler-D'Andrea-Freeman?
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:21:09 PM)
I have heard nothing like that and think it is premature since they have not had to practice it. There may be a theory out there but until they start practicing it I think it is just talk.
jsbuckeye (Aug 8, 2005 2:21:17 PM)
Which player has the biggest impact a freshman jamario oneill or alex boone?
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:22:25 PM)
Lets see a couple of days on practice first. The only player with a sure chance to step in is Wilson. Maybe Wells.
Kirk (Aug 8, 2005 2:22:45 PM)
edbuck51 asks "Are you amped about Kurt Coleman?"
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:23:37 PM)
Very mcuh so. A really special athlete. I would be even more amped if he were going to play offense.
riverwatchbucknut (Aug 8, 2005 2:23:47 PM)
Duane how many national 100 guys do you think there should be in ohio this year
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:25:06 PM)
9 or 10. There could be as many as 12.
homesickbuck (Aug 8, 2005 2:25:16 PM)
If we don't get Aaron Brown, how good are the other O-lineman in Ohio this year?(Browning, Nagy, Palmer, etc.)
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:26:45 PM)
Good enough that I would offer them and all 3 that you mention could get offers anyway. I would be surprised of less than 2 got offered regardless of Brown. I think they are good enough and I don't like the feedback I am hearing from national kids.
Mike68 (Aug 8, 2005 2:26:55 PM)
Are you as concerned as me about the lack of depth at DT that we will be facing this time next year w/ only Cotton, Denlinger and Abdallah returning in '07? I'm surprised that JT & Co haven't made a bigger push for DT's this year.
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:28:27 PM)
I am concerned. No question. There is little here in Ohio and nationally it does not look like a good year let alone a great year. The pickings are slim.
redondo (Aug 8, 2005 2:28:39 PM)
Hi Duane - Really glad to see you in "Chat". Any chnace this could become a regular occurrence throughout the season and on through recruiting? Thanks for all your insights throughout the year!!
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:29:56 PM)
It is going to be happening more often. That has already been determined.
OSUBucks22 (Aug 8, 2005 2:30:06 PM)
Do you think we see any other Tarblooders get offers?
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:31:02 PM)
Browning and Adams are odds-on in my opinion.
freshmanbuck (Aug 8, 2005 2:31:06 PM)
Any Chris Gamle/Santonio Holmes like under rated receivers in Florida looking OSU's way?
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:32:18 PM)
I think Greg Mathews is going to get a hard look. I would not be surprised of he is offered.
Kirk (Aug 8, 2005 2:32:54 PM)
edbuck51 asks "Steve Rehring is fast becoming my favorite player. He is working his tail off. What do you think the future holds for him? Could he end up All-American?"
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:34:10 PM)
I need to see more out of him before I go that far. He played well for a freshman. I liked how he got after it. I think a move to RT would be in his best interest.
fairbornlawyer (Aug 8, 2005 2:34:20 PM)
Are we going to see anything out of Roy Hall this year?
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:35:27 PM)
I think we see Hall but not in a traditional role. I think we will end up trying to come up with a name for his position. He is going to play all over the place.
highlander133 (Aug 8, 2005 2:35:40 PM)
You mentioned Mo Wells as perhaps an impact freshman. Knowing your preference for big backs, has the word been that positive about him?
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:36:50 PM)
It has been. He came here heavier than anticipated but just as fast and stronger. Pound for pound he may be the strongest player on the team.
KENTBUCK (Aug 8, 2005 2:37:00 PM)
I read that carpenter checked in at 260 lbs. Is he going to play at that weight, or will he shed some weight in camp?
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:38:15 PM)
He will lose a few lbs but look for him to play between 250-255 and running under 4.6. I love A.J. Hawk as much as anybody but the unique one is Carpenter.,
OSUBucks22 (Aug 8, 2005 2:38:24 PM)
Will Andre Amos get his first look at CB or will he be a WR?
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:39:34 PM)
The need at corner says he will start off there. He played corner in All-Star games and 99% of the time a player plays his collee position on All-Star games.
homesickbuck (Aug 8, 2005 2:40:00 PM)
Could you compare Justin Boren vs Connor Smith? There is a discrepency with Rivals vs. Scout as to who is the better prospect. What do you think?
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:42:07 PM)
For me it was Brown and Smith. Then there was a dropoff to Boren then another one to Nagy, Tilley and Palmer.
OSUBucks22 (Aug 8, 2005 2:42:11 PM)
Do you think we'll know the reason why Tilley isn't being recruited? I don't buy the mutual disinterest stuff...
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:43:51 PM)
There are some grade issues that have only recently been disclosed. I can tell you this. The staff was never high on him. I am sure of that.

Who is the next OSU coach to move on to a head coaching position at another school?
redondo (Aug 8, 2005 2:44:10 PM)
Duane - Do "preferred" walkons get treatment different than non-preferred walkons.
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:45:58 PM)
They are given more reps. The whole point is they are close to a scholarship player and if they perform they will get scholies. That is an unwritten understanding. It comes down to they have a shot. Most walk-ons have to earn even that.
Kirk (Aug 8, 2005 2:46:04 PM)
freshmanbuck asks "Who is the next OSU coach to move on to a head coaching position at another school?"

I Hazel and Beckman are going to get offers no sooner than the season is over.

I saw Jamario O'Neill execute a ridiculous punt return against Mckinley in the regional finals last year. Any chance of him returning punts with Ginn?
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:49:00 PM)
The way Ginn is running back kicks they will want a SirJo Welch is someone else with speed who is a hitter back there with him. Mayeb that will be O'Neal.
muskiebuck (Aug 8, 2005 2:49:21 PM)
Duane, who do you think is most likely to fill out the OL recruiting this year? I have Smith, Brown-keeping my fingers crossed here-and then? Or, are we planning to have our TE verbal switch to OT?
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:51:46 PM)
I think Brown is a Buckeye. After that is going to be Nagy, Browning and Palmer. I think 2 of the 3 if not all 3, unless someone out of state starts saying the right things. From my point of view it is dead out there. That is the bad news. The good news is players like Nagy Browning and Palmer who all would verbal as soon as they are offered.
redondo (Aug 8, 2005 2:52:09 PM)
Hi Duane - How big of an issue are steroids an issue at the HS level? Thank you.
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 2:54:48 PM)
Too big. What really bothers me is the kids would do themselves such a favor by committing that money to hire a Butch Reynolds or to a place like Accel-Ohio and work on speed. At the same time they would be doing wonders for their health. Coaches rarely talk about strength. Look at the combines. the BP is an afterthought. Who ran well is the focus. Speed, speed, speed.
BuckeyeDave (Aug 8, 2005 2:55:10 PM)
Thomas Matthews didn't play much, but seemed to be really well liked and respected by the team, and seemd to be an emotional leader of sorts. Who might fill that kind of role on this seaon's team?

Not with the talent level in Ohio this year, no.

Is JT's recruiting philosophy(or recruiting ability) different for some former OSU head coaches ? Seems the emphasis is more on highly rated young men(in most cases) as opposes to setteling or just being able to get that next tier down player ?
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 3:10:06 PM)
I would say clearly.
VaBuck5 (Aug 8, 2005 3:10:13 PM)

I think only time will tell.
ImBack45 (Aug 8, 2005 3:11:20 PM)
Duane, just curious, you mentioned earlier Beckman will be offered another coaching position as soon as the season is over. Why hire a coach if you there's a strong chance he'd leave after one year? No wonder out of state recruiting is so bad.
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 3:12:29 PM)
You don't. You hire the best coaches. You can't worry about that.
wwt (Aug 8, 2005 3:12:36 PM)
I get the impression that JT is doing a better job of spreading out classes by position than Cooper did. It seemed as if Cooper was always depeted at a position or two and then you ended up not getting the spacing between classes at a position that JT is getting (except at RB). Is this my imagination or do you see this as well?
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 3:13:44 PM)
Cooper was a best athlete available recruiter, and if he had a scholie he was going to use it. There was no balance.
Kirk (Aug 8, 2005 3:15:00 PM)
jsbuckeye asks "Will Roy Hall get reps at WR or TE, he could be that Winslow type at te?"
Duane (Aug 8, 2005 3:16:00 PM)
He will get reps all over the place. Maybe even FB and RB. He is not big enough to be an every down TE like Winslow. That is just wishful thinking.
wwt (Aug 8, 2005 3:16:20 PM)
So you agree that JT is doing a better job of balancing? I see that as a help in that if you only need 1or 2 TEs for example, you can get a top guy without having him worrying about competing for PT with 3-4 guys in his same class.
