In Ohio High magazine, Duane Long has Steve Schott of Massillon as the top kicker in the class of 2008. Schott (5-11, 140) just might be the top kicker in Ohio regardless of class.
At Ohio High, Duane Long isn't fond of ranking kickers so he's pretty much given me that task. In an attempt to learn what the scouts are looking for, I spent some time with Akron head coach J.D. Brookhart at one of his camps. Brookhart was evaluating six of the top kickers in an attempt to recruit one for the Zips.
Brookhart, a former assistant for the Denver Broncos where he coached Jason Elam among others, put these kickers through many drills, testing their mental and physical capabilities.
As I watched these seniors go through the drills, I couldn't help but wish Steve Schott was there to compete with them. He would have done fine. I saw Steve win the kicking contest at the east-west all star game at Fawcett Stadium earlier. With a winning kick of 48 yards, Schott outlasted future Buckeye Jonathan Thoma.
For someone so young, Schott demonstrated the mental toughness needed to be a great kicker. Having the ability to kick field goals from 50 yards proves he has the leg strength.
Schott was the regular kicker at Massillon as a freshman. His kickoffs regularly reached the 5-yard line and many went into the end zone. Schott was 6 for 13 on the season in field goals with a long of 35 yards. He was automatic on extra points.
For someone this young to be this good is quite impressive. Schott does not
have a kicking coach nor has he attended many camps. His father has taught him
how to kick, but they are now looking to hire a personal coach for Steve. Schott
also plans to attend the Ohio State kicking camp next summer. He knows he needs
to get stronger to compete at the highest level.
"I work out with the team lifting weights and running," said Schott. "I know I need to get bigger and stronger. My idol is Adam Vinateri of the Patriots because he's so good under pressure. As far as college goes, I really am interested in Ohio State right now."
After seeing how valuable Mike Nugent was to Ohio State's recent success, Schott is a kicker we will follow very closely at Ohio High the next three years. It will be interesting to see how good he can become as he matures and develops further.
