garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 9:06:47 PM)
Hello everyone...welcome to tonight's chat. I think we're on line and ready to go so fire away. Photo day questions and others are ready to be fielded. Smile!

cincibuck (Aug 11, 2005 9:08:49 PM)
Gary, Are u coming down for skyline chili. crosstown shootout here in cincinnati. Great, time to see Smith, Brown, Chichester,Moeller.

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 9:08:49 PM)
Hi cincibuck...thanks for starting off tonight's chat. I will be at the Crosstown Showdown but only on Saturday. I start the weekend at Hoban to see Crhis Wells take on the Knights, Friday I'm at Mentor to see Glenville take on the Cardinals and then straight down to Cincy... with a stop off in C-bus that night. Great weekend to kick off the high school season.

jcosu23 (Aug 11, 2005 9:10:55 PM)
your thoughts on the qb from ill. I. Williams seems like he starting to warm up to osu. he is scheduling a visit, although commited to ill. YOU think we may take two qbs

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 9:10:55 PM)
Hi jcosu23...I wouldn't get too excited about a guy like Williams. One...Henton would seemed to have filled that athletic mold at quarterback already and two ... he's committed already to Illinois. I would take two but my guy would be a safe pick...Mike Hartline. Ohio State will regret passing on him in a couple of years, IMHO.

BuckInIll (Aug 11, 2005 9:14:11 PM)
Good evening Gary. Thanks for the chat! Any news on Derrell Johnson from Y-town? What position do you see him playing? Seems like that town leans to the Domers, and Warren (my hometown) leans to tsun.

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 9:14:11 PM)
Hi BuckniILL...Y-town is my town and I would definitely say it is not a Notre Dame town. OSU all the way, especially with JT at the helm. I believe Johnson will be a wide receiver at the next level and a very good one. He may play some defense for Fecko this year but his main role at Mooney this year will be at quarterback on offense. I really like this guy and I think his academic status will fit OSU closer than ND's although not by much any more! If he has a good year, and he will, and OSU wants him...Johnson could be a late addition to Ohio State's class.

cincibuck (Aug 11, 2005 9:14:49 PM)
By the way its a 3 day event the crosstown shootout

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 9:14:49 PM)
I know that but I'll only get Saturday's games and last year half of Saturday got rained out. I will miss Brown on Thursday night.

Palmer (Aug 11, 2005 9:15:58 PM)
How much access to camp have you had, and if you have had access, who has stood out to you?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 9:15:58 PM)
Hi Palmer...being from Youngstown...I've had none. That being said....the local guys in Columbus haven't had much more than I have. They've pretty much sealed practices off to the media for the most part.

BuckeyeDave (Aug 11, 2005 9:18:40 PM)
If you were a mid-major or Div 1-AA prospect, which camps would plan on attending?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 9:18:40 PM)
Hi BuckeyeDave...I would go to as many MAC school camps as possible, Ohio State's because there's MAC coaches there as instructors and even YSU's camp. I assume you're asking about being an Ohio kid? That would give you a nice cross section of schools.

Guest (Aug 11, 2005 9:20:48 PM)
who will start at the second corner spot opening game? any chance ginn plays atleast some cb (in the red zone)?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 9:20:48 PM)
Hi OSU drinker... hope you're not nipping on a Thursday night...I say Tyler Everett is the man opposite Youboty. I think Ginn will eventually be a red zone corner and depending on the young talent in camp...and there is some young talent...he may play some corner and Everett could move to nickel. But I think Everett will lock down that spot pretty solidly.

photoday (Aug 11, 2005 9:25:02 PM)
Gary, any reason why D'Andrea hasn't been tried at an outside spot? He has trouble with traffic but can run sideline to sideline. Duane likes him there and he would get more minutes at Terrys position next year by Freeman and Hoobler.

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 9:25:02 PM)
Hi photoday...D'Andrea just needs to get healthy and play that way. Time and time again JT comments on the playmaker that D'Andrea is or can be when he plays healthy. He's got great measureables but he just needs to stay healthy. I talked some to Mike tonight and he's hoping to be 100 percent by the start of the season but he's not there yet. I wish him well. Great kid. I still think if he stays healthy he can be a big playmaker in the middle.

Guest (Aug 11, 2005 9:28:32 PM)
Tressel seems to be talking about opening up the offense, I for one will believe it when I see it. I do believe that we have one of the best O lines since JT has been the head coach. Comments?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 9:28:32 PM)
Hi ilousfan1...there are so many weapons at JT's disposal that it's ridiculous. And with two verteran QB's under center the offense can be as good as JT allows it to be. But there are always those strict tenets of ball control, clock control, field position, defense and special teams that are most important. This has the potential to be a great offense with speed in the backfield and a solid veteran line, Barton looks to be in great shape, that it's almost frightening. We shall see what JT chooses to do with it. If not now....then never.

buck-up tricks (Aug 11, 2005 9:32:59 PM)
This is kind of flying under the radar with all the hype over Vince Young, plus Benson being gone, but I see the Texas O-Line is rated #1 in the nation by several publications (4 NFL caliber guys, 2 first rounders)...considering the play of the Bucks D-Line last year, should we be concerned

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 9:32:59 PM)
Texas has talent no question...but I like OSU's veteran defense a whole lot. A great linebacking corps and secondary and the front wall will be better than they're getting credit for...so bring it on. I'll certainly be happy playing this one at home. A big advantage to OSU. Pitcock and Kudla are as physical as anyone and so is Green and Patterson is a playmaker. If they get anything at all out of Richardson or one of his backups...it's a solid front line no question. Worthington looks really good by the way. And Barrow as filled out some since last year.

cincibuck (Aug 11, 2005 9:34:56 PM)
Hey Gary any new info on Robert Williams CB out of Withrow in Cincinnati, And by the way their are alot of buckeye football fans down here contrary to what is said. You can just look at the players from this area who are at OSU.

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 9:34:56 PM)
cincibuck...I'm going to the Cincinnati area tomorrow and I may try to check out Withrow if I can find it. Email me directions and time of their practice if you know it at h2hsports@zoominternet.net ... I'd appreciate it if you could help me with that one. I'd like to go to Colerain, Princeton, and Withrow if I can find them all.

jcosu23 (Aug 11, 2005 9:38:08 PM)
Hi Gary.. I like Hartline kid aswell but with 2 dropback qbs in Boeckman & Schoenhoft is there room for a third. Also J. Chichcester what type of player is he. (M. Jenkins). I hope.

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 9:38:08 PM)
I think the more competition at quarterback in two years the better jcosu23. Again I really like Schoenhoft as the QB of the future but I'd love to see Boeckman, Schoenhoft, Hartline and Henton and maybe Chris Smith battle it out in '07. I hope to see Chichester play this year but he is very imposing in person. I think the potential is unlimited with his size. He'll be an awesome target if he stays on the outside.

photoday (Aug 11, 2005 9:42:26 PM)
Hey Gary, you are a Youngstown guy and know Tress better than anyone of us. So, were there years at Y-Town where Tress had the talent to open it up, and did he? Should we really believe Tress is gonna open it up and be explosive as Tressel is indicating?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 9:42:26 PM)
He didn't need to photoday. He pounded his way on the ground to all four of his championships and threw the ball when he needed to. Mix in all the other ingredients I mentioned early and it was a successful formula in I-AA when you had a lot of talent. Controlling the game is what wins championships for JT and that's not going to change any time soon. I hope we see a lot of offense this year but we will see enough for OSU to win a lot of games. Bottom line.

skeelo (Aug 11, 2005 9:44:33 PM)
gary did mitchum appear to gained some much needed weight? also did you hear of any results from testing day?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 9:44:34 PM)
Hi skeelo...Mitchum looks pretty good. He's got some more weight on his back side but he's not fat in any way. I spoke to him briefly tonight and he's ready to make a run at one of the starting spots. I personally didn't hear or ask about any times though.

tony2246 (Aug 11, 2005 9:47:39 PM)
Hi Steve.....are any of the veterans impressed with the incoming freshmen?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 9:47:39 PM)
Hi tony2246... no you don't really hear any of the veterans talking up any freshmen because they've all been there before and know how hard it is going to be for them initially. I think they respect the talent of some of the freshmen however. And some of the freshmen I spoke to today talked about how helpful some of the upperclassmen have actually been and they appreciated that as much as anything. I'm Gary by the way! Smile.

BuckeyeDave (Aug 11, 2005 9:49:10 PM)
Who do you think is most likely to become the big passrushing threat that the Buckeyes need?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 9:49:10 PM)
David Patterson. And I still like Alex Barrow a lot but I don't know if he's ready yet or not. He has great innate skills as a pass rusher as does Patterson. And Pitcock is going to get a surge upfield that will distrupt any QB.

osudrinker (Aug 11, 2005 9:52:53 PM)
Everbody is saying that Penn State is our so called "landmine" game. I don't see them giving OSU any trouble even though it is a night game away.

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 9:52:53 PM)
I think they're the "landmind" game as well. Just playing there at night will be a daunting task that might prove to be the equalizer. OSU hasn't done particularly well at night on the road in recent years so it could a dangerous proposition for the Buckeyes. But I do give the talent edge overall to OSU in that matchup.

jcosu23 (Aug 11, 2005 9:54:30 PM)
Gary, Should we worry at all about F. Lenix, I hope he would play this year. Sounds like a good kid. Also any news on W.Lyons, R. Small, and any other talented wrs looking OSU'S way?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 9:54:30 PM)
I just saw him last week at Glenville jsous23. He seems to be doing what he needs to do right now so that's a good sign. And he seems determined to make it to OSU so that's a good sign as well. I too am worried but with the proper guidance, which I think he has, I believe he will get it done. I may take until the spring or the entire first year but eventually it should happen. Cross your fingers.

Guest (Aug 11, 2005 9:56:18 PM)
Who will start opposite of Kudla at DE?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 9:56:18 PM)
I believe it will be Richardson but I haven't looked at any updated depth chart since before camp. And Kudla seems to be healthy so I don't see him not lining up as the starter against Miami to start the season.

buck-up tricks (Aug 11, 2005 10:00:09 PM)
Hate to say it...but no 1,000 yard rusher this season, no BCS bowl bid. Your thoughts?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:00:10 PM)
buckup how did you come to this conclusion. I tend to think you will be pleasantly disappointed in your projections. I think one of the backs, particulary Pittman will do well and have a great chance to get a lot of yards but Wells may also prove to be effective back there if the spread offense is implemented successfully. We shall see. And no BCS bid? Wow...I don't see that happening with this group of talent.

Guest (Aug 11, 2005 10:01:25 PM)
Any tidbits on Maurice Wells camp progress so far??

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:01:25 PM)
Lord Vegas asked about Mo Wells progress in camp... and I can say that he seems to be very confident about his situation at this point. I've heard nothing but good things about Wells thus far from coaches and players alike.

Guest (Aug 11, 2005 10:04:17 PM)
Thanks for the insight Gary...I am still concerned about the DL's ability to ge effective game in and game out....any reason for my concern?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:04:17 PM)
Coach T??? I like the talent assembled along the defensive line. And there's a lot of depth even without the new guys. I thnk they'll use a nice 6-8 man rotation up front and cause their fair share of havoc no question. Even a guy like Tim Schafer could be a player that no one is counting on to produce...but he's a talent no question. I like the D-Line....Richardson could be the key to whole unit. If he plays well....look out.

Guest (Aug 11, 2005 10:07:31 PM)
Out of all our offers (excluding Aaron Brown) who would you want to become a buckeye next.

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:07:31 PM)
Lord Vegas asked another question before he got of line... I don't follow the out of staters enough to know but I would like to see on of the three linemen...Browning, Nagy or Palmer be the next to commit. But they first need an offer of course. I think after a few games into the season an offer will officially be made and you'll see one of these three if not more commit to OSU. Just a hunch. I'll take my chances with Ohio guys any day...and NW Pennsylvania kids also...same type of players there.

Guest (Aug 11, 2005 10:08:31 PM)
Hey Gary, is the current group of LB's the best ever at OSU?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:08:31 PM)
It sure is a good one Coach T. Best ever...why not. I think a lot of these guys will be playing in the NFL in the future. And they're more to come.

Guest (Aug 11, 2005 10:10:57 PM)
was it me or did Ted Ginn pick up some weight? Also, is Troy Smith at 225 a good thing?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:10:58 PM)
Hi buckatborder...TGII look much more solid than last year so that's a good thing. I noticed that as well today. And if Smith can handle the extra weight with no problem than that's a good thing. He's no Michael Vick running with the ball so that's not going to make or break his game with a few more pounds. He just may bounce off a defender or two in the open field with the ball which is a good thing.

Guest (Aug 11, 2005 10:12:49 PM)
Any other names from that awesome Colerain football team going to pop up on us before the recruiting year ends? Moeller came out of nowhere, but appears to be a beast!

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:12:49 PM)
I'm hoping to see Moeller and Smith tomorrow as well as one of their underclassman that Duane has been talking about already...forget his name at this moment ... Can't wait for that game in week three against the Texas team at Crew Stadium.

Guest (Aug 11, 2005 10:16:57 PM)
In the end, what do you feel happens with Cumberland?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:16:57 PM)
I went to Brookhaven today on my into Columbus and watched about 40 minutes of their practice buckatborder. They were working pretty hard for day on in pads I thought. Doing a lot of grass drills etc. Cumberland looks really good at this time. I just don't see him coming on board ... but that's just my opinion right now. Things could change obviously but I'll leave it at that right now.

yooperbuck (Aug 11, 2005 10:19:05 PM)
Hi Gary. Does Darrell Johnson possibly have a future with the bucks? He has the look of a player, but ,how is his speed and hands etc?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:19:05 PM)
Hi yooperbuck...yes he could have a future with the Bucks and they are aware of him I can tell you this. He needs to take care of things before they show any serious interest but Johnson is working toward that. He will be a commodity by the season's end. Not many people heard of Kyle McCarthy at this time last year, he didn't even play QB at Mooney as a junior, and he's at ND now.

WestonBuckeye (Aug 11, 2005 10:21:10 PM)
I saw the low resolution team picture..my 14 year old is taller than our RBs...are we in trouble?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:21:10 PM)
C'mon WestonBuckeye...I"m surprised at some of the sentiments expressed tonight. I'll have some photos posted of the RB's later tonight and you can let me know if you're feeling change. I think all three guys are capable. And Anderson Russell, if anybody wants to know is working with the DB's at this time. So it looks like a three horse race for playing time in the backfield.

Guest (Aug 11, 2005 10:23:43 PM)
HI Gary; Just got logged on so I hope this wasn't asked already. But, is there a buzz about any particular freshman lighting things up so far.

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:23:44 PM)
oogatz... that was quick...got in late and left early...no there's no real buzz about any one freshman at this time but it's awfully early. I think a guy like Andre Amos might be buzzing around at some point in the near future. I would guess overall that Mo Wells has the best chance of any freshman to have the biggest impact the soonest. He'll make plays as a true freshman.

tennesseebuckeye (Aug 11, 2005 10:27:15 PM)
Gary, sorry if this has been mentioned before. There has been some speculation about Boeckman overtaking Zwick this season. Do you think that is a possibility? What do you expect to see from Justin?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:27:15 PM)
Hi tennesseebuckeye... I just don't see that happening any time soon for Boeckman and that's not a knock on him. OSU has to take advantage of the experience that Zwick and Smith already have under their belts. I have high expectations for JZ this year but again I'll say that I'm glad that OSU has two veteran guys under center no matter who plays more. I think both will get their opportunities. Boeckman probably will get some snaps against Miami in week one.

Guest (Aug 11, 2005 10:30:04 PM)
Gary; are there any players, amongst the holdovers, that look to be surprise contributors this year

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:30:04 PM)
oogatz asks about any surprise contributors... I sure think Vernon Gholston looks terrific physically so he may be ready to contribute on defense. Him or Barrow might add a lot to the depth. Sian Cotton is a really big guy and if he's still an agile one he may help out a lot in the middle as well. There's not a lot of room for surprises on this team. A lot of solid veterans will be getting snaps this year.

Guest (Aug 11, 2005 10:32:35 PM)
will this year defense be better than the 2002 D?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:32:35 PM)
OSUfan 81 asks if this D will be better than 2002 and other than the front four which is nearly impossible to match, it's a pretty good unit. But I would have to say no unless the front guys play lights out. But it will be a good unit overall, very fast and physical.

buck-up tricks (Aug 11, 2005 10:34:08 PM)
Lets put to bed the perception that we were conservative last season...we opened up the playbook for sure...1 back, shot-ginn, 5 wides, etc...we just were not very successful or efficicient...50% completion rate and lack of running game simply killed them

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:34:08 PM)
Until TGII emerged last year...this offense was as bad as it got regardless of what formation it was in.

MBuck37 (Aug 11, 2005 10:38:55 PM)
Gary I'm not sure if this has been asked, but I think TGII is the best CB on the team should'nt we use him the same way we used Chris Gamble?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:38:55 PM)
Hi MBuck37...I think Youboty might have something to say about being the best corner on the team. And I think Everett is going to be a pleasant surprise on the other corner. He'll be good enough that OSU won't need a TGII to have to come over to defense unless in specialty situations or circumstances. Teddy will play wherever they ask him to regardless if he thinks he's a top cornerback...and he does think that by the way. He's just good no matter what position he plays. But I don't think there is that need on defense to move TGII over there for help at this time. Next year may be another story but who knows.

Guest (Aug 11, 2005 10:39:05 PM)
Gary; is Darius Hiley gone forever as far as OSU is concerned?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:39:05 PM)

Guest (Aug 11, 2005 10:40:27 PM)
Just joined the chat... What is the latest on Louis I?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:40:27 PM)
From what I hear db...not first hand...he may go to YSU just to work on his academics and not play any football again this year. If I hear something different Ill pass it along.

pdm (Aug 11, 2005 10:41:31 PM)
Gary, My wife is a Penn state grad, she tells me I should be worried about the game in Happy Valley, could she be right?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:41:31 PM)
Sure pdm...and tell her that Lion noise is the worst sound in college football, next to "hail to the victors" of course...lol.

MBuck37 (Aug 11, 2005 10:43:40 PM)
Will Freeman,Hoobler, and Terry get playing time this year at LB? My friend said he saw and spoke to Curtis Terry recently and said he looks like a monster! Said he looks to be in great shape.

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:43:40 PM)
That's a great unit behind the starters. D'Andrea is still in the mix and there's a guy named John Kerr that is still on the team. But yes the three you mentioned will all get some valuable pt this year...Freeman in particular.

Guest (Aug 11, 2005 10:44:56 PM)
Is marcel Frost ready to play and make contributions this year. There have been rumors of a suspension, but it seems that he has real ability to give defenses fits if JT uses the tight end like they did in 2003.

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:44:56 PM)
Marcel looks great oogatz ... he told me tonight that this was going to be his big year. I believe him. I do not know anything about a suspension however.

j (Aug 11, 2005 10:47:28 PM)
Gary, what about John Kerrs brother that signed with Miami as an OL, did he transfer to OSU?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:47:29 PM)
Hi j I didn't have any encounter with another Kerr other than John today. I didn't check for his name on the roster and didn't notice him so I can not comment on that at this time other than to say I've heard those rumors before.

buck-up tricks (Aug 11, 2005 10:48:12 PM)
Oh I have a tempered optimism in the running game this year, I was just saying we need to have a 1,000 yard guy to be an elite BCS team...no doomsaying prediction here :)

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:48:12 PM)
I think Pittman stands a good chance, barring injury, to be the next 1,000 yard rusher at OSU.

yooperbuck (Aug 11, 2005 10:50:36 PM)
Who worries about Iowa? We pass the test if we win that one although Happy Valley at night and ann arbor anytime can be sweaty.

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:50:36 PM)
I don't worry about Iowa as much as everyone else does. Iowa is still Iowa in the grand scheme of things and they have to come into Ohio Stadium this year. Besides the Buckeyes have a loss to avenge with them from last year.

MBuck37 (Aug 11, 2005 10:51:47 PM)
Is David Ausberry just giving us smoke signals by constantly saying we are in his top 4? Or is he just playing the recruiting game with us like Rico McCoy and Jason Gwaltney did.

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:51:47 PM)
Hi MBuck37...I don't know enough to comment on Ausburry's status but I tend to think like Duane does on this...if he goes to anywhere other than USC that will be big news.

buck-up tricks (Aug 11, 2005 10:52:37 PM)
Any predictions on this years' captains? With JT's penchant for seniors, I'm going with Hawk, Carpenter, Salley and Mangold.

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:52:38 PM)
Throw Rob Sims in there somewhere. Maybe five?

Guest (Aug 11, 2005 10:53:54 PM)
I know you probably havent heard anything, but any word on the Walker Ashley front? There are rumors he is considering enrolling here instead due to the grades thing.

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:53:54 PM)
You're right bucatborder I haven't heard anything about Walker Ashley. I did see James Laurinaitis tonight and I thought he looked really good.

j (Aug 11, 2005 10:54:56 PM)
Gary, your predictions for this year?

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:54:56 PM)
My brain says 10-1! But my heart says 11-0 in the Rose Bowl against USC.

MBuck37 (Aug 11, 2005 10:56:48 PM)
I appreciate your response Gary Thank You, but why is there such hesitation to use this young man(TGII) in the same mold as Chris Gamble? Chris Gamble started as a WR but he's making his living as a starting CB for the Carolina Panthers...Isn't TGII just as talented? Thanks again Gary.

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:56:48 PM)
I think Ginn will also make a living in the NFL as a CB but that will come in time. He obviously has a chance to be more prolific on offense right now at OSU so that's where he will stay. And unless Everett flops, and I don't think he will, OSU doesn't need Ginn on defense.

garyhousteau (Aug 11, 2005 10:59:29 PM)
That's it for tonight guys...I appreciate all the questions and there are still some in que at this time but I have to get back to work on my photo gallery I want to post tonight before i go home.
