Gary - Will you be seeing any games in Youngstown tonight? I'll be at YSU checking out Ursuline.
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 12:08:36 PM)
Good afternoon to all of you Bucknuts. Yeah I was at the Garfield game and I'm still working on my photo gallery...that's the only reason for my silence. I'm ready to speak now if you have any questions.
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 12:10:02 PM)
Tonight I go to Mentor to see the Ted Ginn-less Tarblooders take on the Cardinals. Should be a good game tonight. Tomorrow I join Steve in Cincinnati. I'll drive to C-bus after the game tonight and leave early for Cincy in the morning. Ben Martin plays at 11 am. Duane thinks he's the best DL in the state already and he's a junior. Can't wait to see him play.
slim (Aug 26, 2005 12:14:05 PM)
Hello Gary, i made it to the Garfield game last night and was very disappointed.....you? Garfield's o-line is bad, and their team as a whole had no desire to hustle at all...your thoughts
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 12:14:05 PM)
Hi slim and thanks for kicking off our chat this fine afternoon. I have to concur with your thinking slim. I was disappointed in every sense of the word last night. Sure I saw Chris do a couple of monster things on occasion but he wasn't hurt early in the game and I saw so no spark or no desire at all. For them to look so bad as a team with all the expectations they knew they had by others was quite frankly...never mind.
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 12:15:42 PM)
Everyone knows I think a lot of Wells and the potential to be great is really there and he was punishing tacklers at times. He absolutely knocked 17 into the stars on a goal line play that's been mentioned on our message board. But compared to watching the energy and spark and aggressiveness of a Tyrell Sutton...Wells just didn't show a lot of that last night.
BuckeyeDave (Aug 26, 2005 12:16:55 PM)
Beside Aaron Brown, did anybody at the Princeton - McNicholas game stand out
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 12:16:55 PM)
Hi BuckeyeDave...Steve was in Cincy last night and according to a few phone communications we had last night during the game, he said Brown was looking pretty good. He has a whole bunch of video on Brown I know that. He was isolating on him all game he said. Should be good stuff.
redondo (Aug 26, 2005 12:18:23 PM)
Gary - If you were coach Dantonio would you be having second thoughts on going to Cincy which seems to be in the throes of a "sea change" culturally?
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 12:18:23 PM)
Hi redondo...if you're referring to the Bob Huggins stuff then I guess there is a "sea change" but I'm sure Dantonio don't give a darn about that. He's preparing his team for the new challenge of playing in the Big East now and I'm sure he's excited about that.
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 12:20:35 PM)
By the way...Cortez Jones was the best player on the field last night with all due respect to the sophomore running back from Hoban, Steve Yoak, who stole the show for the Knights. Jones had two INTs, this kids makes plays in every game, and a couple of nice catches early on but he cramped up late in the game and that surely didn't help Garfield's cause. He was number 11 for those who were at the game. He's a fine talent and would be a great pickup for a school like Cincinnati.
buckgrad (Aug 26, 2005 12:21:24 PM)
Afternoon Gary, whats the story on AJ? Just read Steves chat from yesterday, someone was saying AJ hurt himself?
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 12:21:24 PM)
Sorry buckgrad...I have no news or updates on anything of that nature. I read that too and I hope there is nothing to be concerned about.
Ytown fan (Aug 26, 2005 12:24:31 PM)
Gary, I saw the Rayen - Canfield game last night. Rayen has some good young talent. Do you see any of them as potential Bucks?
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 12:24:31 PM)
Hi Ytown fan...my town is Y-town and I'm a proud to admit it. Gary Thornton from Rayen is a bit on the smallish side but he's a sophomore and if he has a growth spurt he could be the next really good player from the Youngstown area. He played as freshman last year and drew raves from everyone. Rayen has a lot of speed and I'm glad to see they played well. I know they thought they really have a chance to do well this year so I'm sure they were disappointed. I don't know their personnel very well yet but I'll look into them more now.
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 12:27:22 PM)
Angelo Babbaro had a fantastic 50-yard TD run. I saw that on our local high lights last night as well. He looked fantastic on the run. Cincinnati should be interested in him too if they're not already. Rayen had a really nice 70-yard punt return for a TD but I didn't catch the name of the young man who did that. Rayen has a lot of talent no question and this is they year they could really challenge Chaney. Chaney is to Y-town what Brookhaven and Glenville are to C-bus and C-town respectivey.

i filmed the entire game but there just wasnt anything to get excited about. wells looks the part but i sure hope someone lights a fire under his rear soon......
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 12:29:05 PM)
Yeah slim Wells sure does look the part doesn't he! He is truly a specimen.
redondo (Aug 26, 2005 12:32:27 PM)
Hi Gary - Tirico and Tim Brant for the Texas game? I can see it for the Miami game, but Texas, please!!!!
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 12:32:27 PM)
If you're meaning that they're sending the B-team for the Texas game...oh well. Most people around the college game are saying this is one of the best early games if not one of the best of the entire year. It will probably feel like you're watching a Thursday night game if you're at home. This is truly a special football game in so many ways.
BuckeyeDave (Aug 26, 2005 12:32:59 PM)
Is anybody from the GWOC on the radar?
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 12:32:59 PM)
Can you be more specific with your question BuckeyeDave?
grimes (Aug 26, 2005 12:36:27 PM)
Do you think Tress has finally brought balance to the recruiting classes with this last class and has now evened up things so he can concerntrate on who he wants instead fo filling gaps.
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 12:36:28 PM)
One thing I can say grimes is that JT has a rhyme and reason for everything he does. I really believe from my conversations with different people that JT has his recruiting board set so early on and establishes a solid position with most of the players that he wants, especially in state, that he has a lot of success with the players he goes after. And then if gets one or two OOS state kids later thats a bonus. I think the depth chart is so strong in so many areas now that he can really pick and choose and be as selective as he wants to add a piece here or there.
buckgrad (Aug 26, 2005 12:43:42 PM)
Did Chris just not get any blocking last night? He just have a bad night, care to elaborate? Thanks
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 12:43:42 PM)
Yeah buckgrad that's just a bad football team overall. I like Coach Sax a whole lot but it's painfully obvious that he doesn't have much to work with there. Again Chris ran hard...he would wait for any opening and then go for hard...he punished people last night. But I'm sorry to say that Hoban's not really a great football or anything close to it. They're a good solid program no question and they prepared hard in the offseason...but there's no major talent on that team. I think it's fair to say that just about everyone was expecting to see more from Chris Wells then we all saw last night...for whatever reason. What that actually means is...the upside when he gets into a real program...especially when he enrolls early at OSU...could bode really well for his future. Let's all just hope he doesn't really get hurt...if he didn't do that already last night. I have phone calls into everyone and haven't gotten any solid injury update yet on him.
tom (Aug 26, 2005 12:44:42 PM)
How serious is the injury to Jim Cordle?
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 12:44:42 PM)
Hi tom...I don't really know that sorry...but if he's injured for any lenghth of time then I would hope OSU gets by with Datish as the backup center and they redshirt Cordle.
Guest (Aug 26, 2005 12:49:05 PM)
Gary, who is the favorite for the fullback poistion, White or Johnson?
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 12:49:05 PM)
Hi ts...again it depends on serious and how prominent this spread formation is going to be utilized. If they abandon, for the most part, the I-formation, then there's not as much need for Johnson. I think both guys can catch the ball pretty well and White as more game experience so I think we will see White potentially more than Johnson on the field. But if they start slamming away on offense...a la smashmouth style of old - JT will never abandon that...then Johnson will get a lot more work. I'm just not convinced on how unorthodox JT will become with his offense this year. There's something about that leopard and his spots ...!
buckgrad (Aug 26, 2005 12:52:47 PM)
Gary, the Oneal move to safety confuses me a little. Wasnt he brought in as a corner? Is safety just his natural position? Thanks
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 12:52:47 PM)
Hi buckgrad...I'm sure many people will say the move to safety was precipitated by having too many corner prospects at their disposal...well if Jamario was that good a corner prospect you don't move him from the position. I think it was painfully obvious to them once they had him and seen what they had that he's a true safety...something that I've advocated all along. He's fast, he has no fear, and he hits like a ton of bricks. And because he has such good speed he can recover if he too aggressive like he did once or twice in the North-South game. Guys Jamario is a vicious hitter. I've saw it up close and personal many times.
JimC (Aug 26, 2005 12:57:14 PM)
Hi Gary, Any feedback on the ESPN/OSU televised practice? I thought it was very interesting. Wells lower body/legs are huge. He looks like a player. Is that a typical OSU practice?
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 12:57:14 PM)
Hi JimC...other then seeing the highlight segment on ESPN I didn't see it aired so I don't know the full content of it. It's been a busy week for high school football preparation and with the limitations on practice I've had to rely on people that I know who have attended practice for information. Maurice Wells does have a compact body and he should make his presence known this year in one form or another. Was it a typical practice? I'm sure JT showed the nation everything he wanted to show...no more and no less. JT is the master of his realm...always remember that. And that's a good thing if you're a Buckeye fan.
madman (Aug 26, 2005 12:58:12 PM)
Any news on A.J. and a possible injury?
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 12:58:13 PM)
Hi madman...no news from this corner on A.J. I'm like you..hoping that this isn't anything serious.
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 12:59:42 PM)
I'm low on questions so if you have anything on your mind you can send it now.
JimC (Aug 26, 2005 1:02:18 PM)
Any tailgates for BN members besides Texas? I'm going to the SDSU game and Iowa.
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 1:02:18 PM)
HI JimC...I'm always ready for a good tailgate with the good people of Bucknuts. Normally when I go to the Shoe on game day...I stop by my two or three tailgate spots and say hello and then head over to St. John Arena and wait for the team to arrive. More and more people are showing up at St. John every time so that's becoming a truly special event. But if you want to tailgate...let's tailgate. I just know that we have the Texas tailgate right now.
bucks4fun (Aug 26, 2005 1:05:55 PM)
With teams trying to punt away from T. Ginn, do you see them putting a second returner, possibly Holmes or Youboty back there also?
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 1:05:55 PM)
Of course bucks4fun...didn't OSU normally have Holmes and Ginn back there last year anyway. And Youboty is also a tremendous return guy...I believe he had a couple of nice returns in a spring game or jersey scrimmage a while back. But I think you couldn't do any better than having Holmes and Ginn back. Remember last year Holmes had his return for TD agains NW and then was it the following week at home that Ginn had his first return for TD against Wisconsin? Pick your poison or kick it out of bounds. I don't see anyone opting for the former.
JimC (Aug 26, 2005 1:09:12 PM)
Will the Bucknuts TV continue? Great addition!! Is it possible to get some old game clips or interviews of coaches/players? I think that would be a nice addition to the web page as well.
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 1:09:12 PM)
Yeah JimC...video is one of Steve's new pets while still photography is mine. I'm sure Steve will have a ton of great video this weekend. I'll join him on Saturday and we'll just try to blow everyone out of the house with video interviews. I'm still learning how to be a photographer...I'm trying hard but haven't come close to master the skill. We as Buckeye fans all know who has excellent OSU photographs, I tell him every time I see him at games that he's the best, and someday I hope to be as good as him. But I'm working hard at it.
bucks4fun (Aug 26, 2005 1:12:47 PM)
Do you think JT will play pretty vanilla against Miami to keep Texas guessing?
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 1:12:47 PM)
That's a pretty safe assumption bucks4fun...he'll be as vanilla as he can get away with. But he'll automatically have a new dimension against Texas when Troy Smith comes back. Again I could be wrong but I think JZ can be just as effective as Craig Krenzel running the ball and that formula worked pretty effective. But Smith will give Texas a lot more to practice for anyway. And again, unless JZ stinks up the joint against Miami then I don't see how you don't start him against Texas. Then you can ease TS into the game. That's just the way I see it.
labsbeabmm (Aug 26, 2005 1:16:21 PM)
any new word on lyons? I live in Pittsburgh and every time he is quoted, he refers to the receiver glut at OSU. Is his brother lobbying for us? I think he is leaning toward Miami.
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 1:16:22 PM)
Hi labsbeabmm...I talked to Devon about this at Media day and even he's not really certain with what his brother is thinking but in the end he too thinks OSU is in good shape. I'm sure Wes is seriously looking at these other schools and thinking about how he could fit in at Miami and now at West Virginia...but OSU is like his extended home. He's close with his big brother and I think in the end that bodes well for OSU's chances with him. That's how I've felt all along. He's going to face competition everywhere he goes so we shall see.
madman (Aug 26, 2005 1:18:39 PM)
is it me or are we seeing fewer and fewer offers on the table this year as compared to past years rate? I know they will wait to see a couple of game films for those that they are unsure of...what position are they targeting the most?
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 1:18:39 PM)
madman...like I said earlier...JT is so prepared for recruiting and has his ducks all in a row that he can be as selective and patient as he wants to be. I do think they are waiting on some game film now to complement all the data from camps and interviews that they have on the kids they're still considering. And if some of these kids truly want to be Buckeyes or have the chance to be...they need to be patient.
ilosufan1 (Aug 26, 2005 1:23:07 PM)
Hi Gary, I am joining late so I hope this isn't a duplicate but is there anymore word on Marcel Frost's progress. I understand he is a gifted athlete and he seems big enough and quick enough to be a great option at TE especially in the spread. Seems like a great fit but now they've tried Capenter and Smith at TE, what's up?
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 1:23:07 PM)
Hi ilosufan1...with Nicol out for an extended period of time I think that is the reason for seeing Smith being moved there and Carpenter being looked at there, more than anything. Besides Smith is a good athlete and he's big and there is a logjam at LB so the move is a good opportunity for him. Frost is freakishly good but he has been able to prove it on the field when it really counts yet. He can really be a solid second tight end with Hamby who can do all the dirty work that JT wants out of his TE. Frost can be the matchup problem guy if they're able to use him or find a way to use him in the offense. Remember...the TE has never been much more than a glorified blocker in JT's offense...with the small exception of Hartsock a couple of years ago.
buckgrad (Aug 26, 2005 1:27:25 PM)
Do you think Schoenoft can push for the 2nd qb spot this year, maybe burn his redshirt? He sounds more impressive than Boeckman.
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 1:27:25 PM)
Hi buckgrad...I've always been high on Schoenhoft and I'm more impressed every time I see him. He's a true gamer and he's good some big time ability. I can easily see Schoenhoft as being a three-year starter at the position after JZ and TS are gone.
ilosufan1 (Aug 26, 2005 1:31:49 PM)
I really hope that we can get substantial leads in "easier" games this year to get some experiance on the defensive side of the ball. I am concerned that Tressel ball won't allow for this. What are some of the games where you think we can get big leads and playing time for inexperianced players?
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 1:31:49 PM)
The easier the game the more conservative the offense can become to run the clock and move the changes etc, etc. Big wins aren't really a major part of the playbook. The "jugular" in JT's offensive world is time of possession and no turnovers. It's certainly not throwing the ball into the endzone right after getting a turnover from the other team.
redondo (Aug 26, 2005 1:34:57 PM)
Hi Gary - will the 2nd QB get meaningful snaps in, say, the 2nd quarter against Miami?
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 1:34:57 PM)
I would hope to see Boeckman get a good amount of work in the Miami...Let's not forget he should be rewarded for sitting out that bowl game when JZ blew out his hammy and they put TGII in the game at QB. I think if JZ's healthy he gets the start and Boeckman should see action in the 3rd or 4th series...depending on how the game is going. He needs some game experience now under his belt. Schoenhoft should certainly redshirt this season for his benefit.
redondo (Aug 26, 2005 1:38:26 PM)
Hi Gary - If you were the bookmaker in Vegas what would you make the spread versus Miami and what would you make the over and under on Buckeye wins this season, including the Bowl?
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 1:38:26 PM)
I'm not a big line-maker guy like some one like Steve is...but I would have to say it would have to be about 9 1/2 minimum. I honestly don't know what the line is...someone said it's dropping on Steve's chat I think but I would 9 is a good point to entice the money to go to Miami. And 10 should be the over and under for victories I would think.
ilosufan1 (Aug 26, 2005 1:40:37 PM)
Gary, your comments on Schoenhoft suprise me. Last year I heard a lot of folks raving about Boeckman. Is this a case of the one that isn't out there is the next great one or is Beockman good but Schoenhoft is great?
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 1:40:37 PM)
I've seen more of Schoenhoft and he's left me with a favorable impression...what can I say. I don't dislike Boeckman. In fact I've clearly stated I'm looking forward to the competion two years from now with Boeckman, Schoenhoft and Henton. I would add Hartline into that mix.
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 1:44:36 PM)
Guys thanks for the questions...there's still a fue more in que but I have work to do before I leave for the Glenville game. I have to finish up my photo spread of the Garfield game. I look for G-ville to have too much for Mentor tonight even without Ted Ginn Sr. By the way...I think you'll see Jermale Hines on offense for Glenville tonight. He's sort of their secret weapon...so don't tell anyone I told you. Enjoy a high school football game tonight if you can...I sure will. Again...I think Derrell Johnson of Cardinal Mooney will be a player that OSU will be seriously interested in by the end of the season...he's that good. Next week it's Ohio State football at the 'Shoe. Hope to see you there. Go Bucks.
GaryHousteau (Aug 26, 2005 1:47:50 PM)
