Thanks for stopping by tonight. Please begin firing away with any questions!

Dave, are you able to see any practices these days? And if so, do the players seem any more intense this year?
dplaw (Aug 30, 2005 8:14:18 PM)
any confirmation on recruiting visitors this weekend?
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:15:09 PM)
I have not see a recruiting list for this weekend.
John (Aug 30, 2005 8:14:26 PM)
What do you think of Datish starting ? Total shock to me.
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:15:40 PM)
Datish starting was also a surprise to me. Says a lot about the hard work he put in this summer, including camp. Tressel confirmed today that both Datish and Rehring will play a lot Saturday.,
MBuck37 (Aug 30, 2005 8:14:28 PM)
I really think we will beat Texas and I don't think it will be a struggle, everyone is saying that Texas has all this Team speed while not giving us credit for the speed we have..What is your opinion on the Game as well as our Team as opposed to that of Texas..Thanks
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:16:41 PM)
The Texas game will not be easy by any means, but I think that the Buckeyes will win by 10 or more points. Ohio State
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:16:59 PM)
Ohio State's defense will make Vince Young try and beat them with the pass and that will be the key to victory.
RochBuck (Aug 30, 2005 8:17:09 PM)
Is Haw really 4th string or just in the dog house? I expected him to be 1a starter this year.
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:17:56 PM)
I think it's a little of both. Haw will definitely factor into the plans this year, but the staff is very pleased with Pittman, Schnittker and Mo Wells right now. Mo Wells has to be one of the top stories of camp in my opinion.
scribeohio (Aug 30, 2005 8:18:07 PM)
Dave, what is Marcel Frost's problems, seems he's always off conditioning for team violations not NCAA stuff?
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:18:56 PM)
We're not privy to exactly what's going on there, but no question Marcel has done something to lose stock with the coaching staff. I know I was guilty of thinking this could be Frost's breakout season, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen.
dplaw (Aug 30, 2005 8:19:47 PM)
Do you think Hunter (Miami's DB with 4.2 speed) has any chance to contain Ginn? That match up will feature the two fastest players in all of college football.....exciting.
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:21:03 PM)
Hunter is 6-1, 206, so if he's a true 4.2 guy will be seeing a lot of him on Sundays in the next few years. I think OSU will line Ginn up all over the field and we'll see several matchups on Saturday.
RochBuck (Aug 30, 2005 8:21:38 PM)
I think back to 2001 and the poor place kicking of both Huston and Nugent. Seems Nugent developed nerves of steel. What are the chances Huston ends up with ice water in his veins. Seems from his quotes that his only concern is being able to focus and block out distractions for game kicks. No doubt of his leg, but our season may rest on his melon. How do you think it will go?
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:22:35 PM)
I think it's all mental with him. And being a 10th-year senior will help in that regard (OK, sixth year). I look for big things from Huston this year. Much like how B.J. Sander stepped up with a big senior season as a punter.
Guest (Aug 30, 2005 8:23:02 PM)
what true frosh do we see on Sat.? I think Jenkins, Wilson, Amos, Wells and O'Neal?
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:23:18 PM)
I also think Alex Boone will see some time.
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:23:28 PM)
Along with the players you mentioned
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:23:51 PM)
Jenkins is another one of the biggest stories to come out of camp. There is a lot of talk that he is the next great corner at OSU. A lot of talk.
scribeohio (Aug 30, 2005 8:24:22 PM)
Dave, what's your outlook for the team - highs/surprises/concerns?
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:25:18 PM)
I have them pegged at 11-1 with a spot in the Rose Bowl. 12-0 is a strong possibility, but I'm being "conservative" for now. My biggest concern is pass rush.
MBuck37 (Aug 30, 2005 8:25:51 PM)
Will Doug Worthington see a lot of action this year? I think he can be very special along with the young man from Akron St.Vincent/St.Marys whose name escapes me(my apologies to him)..Your opinion?
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:27:00 PM)
Worthington will play some. It doesn't look like he'll be redshirted. But Lawrence Wilson (from SVSM) is the player I keep hearing about from players and coaches. He was impressive over the summer and it sounds like he had a good camp and worked his way into the rotation.
gameweek (Aug 30, 2005 8:27:16 PM)
what gives with haw? looks like he's 4th string??
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:27:58 PM)
Haw is fourth-string right now, but I still expect him to have a solid impact this season. The staff is impressed with Schnittker and Wells right now, but I see Haw being in that top 3 by the end of the season.
stone cold buckeye (Aug 30, 2005 8:28:25 PM)
WHo is definitely out due to injury???
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:29:03 PM)
Cordle and Nicol are out until the end of the month.
stone cold buckeye (Aug 30, 2005 8:29:19 PM)
There was a comment by Schlegal that in last years Iowa game they would not allow them to attack Tate. Do you think that was true. I mean he picked us apart and we would not go after him????
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:30:22 PM)
I think that was true to an extent. And even though they somewhat deny it, the Iowa game forced the defense (and offense) to play different for the rest of the season. They began attacking more and it looks like that approch will carry into this season. The players all say that Heacock talks quite a bit about being more aggressive this season.
bigbuck (Aug 30, 2005 8:31:00 PM)
Datish seems very unathletic...Can he REALLY make an impact at LT or is he a stop gap until Boone learns the offense??
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:31:50 PM)
It's a very curious move. Datish's weakness in the past was pass pro. Maybe he's improved quite a bit in that area, but I still think that this is a stopgap until Boone is ready. Or maybe it was a wake up call to Rehring.
stone cold buckeye (Aug 30, 2005 8:32:14 PM)
What will Miami bring to the table this week that worries you the most????Will they pick on our CB away from Youbouty.
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:33:05 PM)
Yes, their passing game led by QB Josh Betts is my biggest concern. They will try and pick on Tyler Everett, but I think he will be up for the challenge. But Betts is very solid. Probably the next NFL QB to come out of that conference.
RochBuck (Aug 30, 2005 8:33:32 PM)
Dave, do you know much about the new coaches, Beckman and Haynes? I'm very curious what their tendencies are and what new wrinkles we might see in the defense. I'm particularly excited about Beckman. I think he's the next big thing for us. I expect him to be a D-I HC within 3-4 years. I think they're our wildcard for UT.
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:34:46 PM)
Beckman's experience as the defensive coordinator at Bowling Green is huge for this defense. And you know he knows some nice secrets about how to attack Miami's spread.
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:35:09 PM)
The players have been impressed with Beckman. Haven't heard too much about Haynes yet.
MBuck37 (Aug 30, 2005 8:35:33 PM)
Will there ever be a time in TGII's career at OSU that he will asume the Chris Gamble role? I know how talented Youboty/Everett/Jenkins are along with Jamario Oneal coming I just think that TGII is that special and that's where his NFL career lies CB not WR am I alone? Thanks again.
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:36:51 PM)
No question about it. And it will happen this season more likely than not. Tressel said before camp that Ginn would play some on D in red zone situations. Ginn says he is not getting any snaps at DB right now, but look for that to change right around the time the Hawkeyes come to town. I think they will ease him in much like Gamble in '02.
stone cold buckeye (Aug 30, 2005 8:36:58 PM)
Dave and Steve head to head chugging.....Who Wins??????
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:37:31 PM)
Well, we were both athletes in our former lives. Now as old men, I'm not sure. But he is chasing three kids around at home, so I will give the nod to him.
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:38:09 PM)
And I know you meant running the 40 and not drinking!
stone cold buckeye (Aug 30, 2005 8:38:36 PM)
Now that everyone will be focusing on Ted Ginn do you think this will really open up everyone else's game? Especially the running game since it seems people will not stack the bax with 8 men.
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:39:27 PM)
Yes, and I think Santonio Holmes is the big winner here. He would be drawing double teams if it were not for Ginn, and now he's going to be somewhat of a "forgotten man." I expect a huge year from Holmes if he stays healthy.
bigbuck (Aug 30, 2005 8:39:50 PM)
You know... I don't believe OSU has EVER finished a season as a TRUE Natl Champ in an odd year(ending in an odd number). Do we REALLY expect to see OSU beat UM at the Pig House with everything on the line???
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:40:53 PM)
That is the one game that has me nervous. Everyone is talking about Texas and Iowa, but Michigan might be sitting there at about 7-3 ready to pull the upset that will make their season. I still think OSU wins (and possibly puts Carr into retirement) but it will be a fight as always.
MBuck37 (Aug 30, 2005 8:41:42 PM)
I think that Zwick will have to have a very solid game in order for us to win comfortably, 150-200yds passing and 2td's thru the air. I think we will be able to run effectively. I think that Mo Wells is the wild card and could have a great game. I hear he's having a great camp.
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:42:44 PM)
Zwick will have a tough time putting up big numbers. Tressel said today that Boeckman will play. I think Zwick will start and play well enough to win, but I'm not expecting big numbers.
dbbucks (Aug 30, 2005 8:42:58 PM)
Dave- turning to week two, I think we all feel great about our skill positions. With that said, Texas on paper, is dominant in the trenches compared to us. Given that Tressell loves the boys on the front line, how do you think he will coach around this?
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:43:52 PM)
I wouldn't go so far as to say Texas' lines are dominant compared to OSU's. Texas' lines are definitely better, but with guys like Pitcock and Green in the middle, I don't see Texas' O-line controlling the line of scrimmage.
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:44:32 PM)
Ohio State's offensive line will have it's hands full with a very good Texas D-line, but again, with vets like Mangold and Sims in there, it will be anything but a dominant performance from Texas' line.
tbdbuckeyeitl (Aug 30, 2005 8:44:45 PM)
What are chances with Aaron Brown. Who is te next one to committ to the Buckeyes??
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:45:01 PM)
I think Aaron Brown will be a Buckeye.
tbdbuckeyeitl (Aug 30, 2005 8:45:41 PM)
Dave if Boeckman has a better game than Zwick, does this make Troy Smith our starter week 2?
bigredbuck (Aug 30, 2005 8:45:44 PM)
I just got on...Has anyone asked "What has to happen in the Miami game in order for Troy Smith to start in the Texas Game?
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:47:01 PM)
My guess on what will happen with Days of Our QBs: Zwick will start and play well against Miami, but not great. Boeckman will play and have some first game jitters. For the Texas game, Zwick will start. Troy Smith will be in the game by the end of the first quarter and will be OSU's QB for the rest of the season.
bigbuck (Aug 30, 2005 8:47:31 PM)
It does not appear Everett has the "hips" to pay corner. Any thoughts???
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:48:58 PM)
He's not a natural or he would have been there in the past when there was depth problems at corner. He's played a little bit of corner at OSU, but they obviously viewed him as a safety. That said, I think he will have a solid year. He will get a lot of help from safeties over the top, but I don't think Everett will be a player teams can "pick on" this year.
tbdbuckeyeitl (Aug 30, 2005 8:49:40 PM)
How does a win or loss against texas really count in recruiting???
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:50:16 PM)
I don't think it's that big of a factor. Just being a part of the game and all the exposure will help, but who wins or loses won't be a big factor in recruiting IMO.
MBuck37 (Aug 30, 2005 8:52:23 PM)
Who is Texas main RB this year now that Cedric Benson is with the Bears? I think losing him to graduation is big..What do you think?
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:53:18 PM)
Texas's starting RB is expected to be junior Selvin Young (6-0, 210) or sophomore Ramonce Taylor (5-11, 195). I think Benson is a big loss for them. He carried the ball a lot in big games.
MBuck37 (Aug 30, 2005 8:53:50 PM)
For all the Heisman talk concerning Vincent Young if you make him beat you passing and not scambling all over the place he becomes ordinary, that's a very tough task I know but I think we have the Team speed at LB to contain him. Once again very tough task I know.
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:54:43 PM)
OSU has the blueprint of what not to do against Young. Just pop in the Rose Bowl film. OSU will make him beat them with the pass. He has reportedly worked very hard on his passing skills. We'll see just how much.
buckeyeD (Aug 30, 2005 8:54:56 PM)
How do you see the RB carries being split up?
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:56:10 PM)
I see Pittman being somewhat of a bellcow this year. Not 30 carries per game, but around 20. If he stays healthy, I am expecting 1,000 yards from him this year. After that, I look for Haw and Wells to see the bulk of the load as the season progresses. Schnittker will be used as a big back every now and then, but I still think he will finish a distant fourth in carries.
buckeyeD (Aug 30, 2005 8:57:57 PM)
I dont know if you have touched on this yet? and im sorry if u did... but, Does Troy Smith have a chance to start the Texas Game?
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 8:58:23 PM)
I think Troy will come off the bench against Texas (by the end of the first quarter) and will be the Buckeyes' QB for the rest of the season.
MBuck37 (Aug 30, 2005 8:59:30 PM)
Who at the WR position will have a breakout year? Holmes and Ginn are a given..Could it be Gonzalez/Lyons/Dukes/Hall/or maybe Devin Jordan if he's not hurt...
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:00:19 PM)
I definitely think one of those young guys will have a breakout year. My guess would be Dukes (I won't count Gonzo... his breakout was the last two games of last season).
buckeyeD (Aug 30, 2005 9:00:41 PM)
The Buckeye WR's are, as a whole, second to none... In the nation... With Ginn and Holmes, then TGonzo/Hall 2nd team... Duke/Lyons 3rd team... do u see robiskie and hartline BOTH being redshirted??? what an incredible group..
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:01:13 PM)
Yes, I think Robiske and Hartline will redshirt.
Guest (Aug 30, 2005 9:04:49 PM)
Do you see any committments coming soon? And if you could give a % on each of these prospects coming to tOSU: robert rose, ray small, thaddeus gibson, aaron brown, jeff cumberland, navarro bowman, welsey lyons.
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:05:42 PM)
I think that Rose, Small, Gibson and Brown will all be Buckeyes. Our recruiting gurus seem optimistic about all of them. Cumberland will depend on grades. Not sure about Bowman and Lyons.
urbanabuckeye (Aug 30, 2005 9:06:24 PM)
I expected to hear more about Worthington, but I keep hearing about Wilson. Is Wilson better than billed or does Worthington need a little more adjustment period?
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:07:12 PM)
Well, Worthington might be a DT down the line, whereas Wilson has found his home from day one. But Heacock said he is excited about both of them. If Worthington does not redshirt that will tell you a lot. I would say it's about 50/50 with him right now.
buckeyeD (Aug 30, 2005 9:07:19 PM)
I found it hard to believe Carpenter wasn't a captain... Salley was also a great choice but did you also find it surprising?
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:08:11 PM)
Well, any other years, guys like Carp and Schlegel would have been shoe-ins to be captain. Heck, Schlegel was the first sophomore to ever be a captain at the Air Force Academy. It just says a lot about Hawk and Salley more than anything else.
buckeyeD (Aug 30, 2005 9:09:40 PM)
I had this disucssion with my friend... I love AJ Hawk and think the world of him, but I also think Carpenter is better all-around... What separates the two, and who do you think gets the nod?
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:10:35 PM)
Hawk's instincts are second to none. Both are great athletes. I think everyone expected Carpenter to wow the NFL guys at OSU's pro day last year, but I don't think too many people were expecting to see Hawk bust out a low 4.4 40.
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:11:26 PM)
Hawk would be my choice if I was picking between the two. He will go down with the great LBs at OSU.
buckeyeD (Aug 30, 2005 9:11:51 PM)
Do we see Ted Ginn on the D-side of the ball, at all... Or has Malcom Jenkins' emergence put that discussion to rest... Just how good is this kid?
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:12:40 PM)
Ted Ginn will play defense this year. They are being hush-hush about it right now, but I fully expect to see them ease him in (much like Gamble in '02) when the Big Ten season rolls around.
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:13:50 PM)
He had a tremendous camp according to Tressel. White played a lot last year before getting banged up. We'll still see a lot of Dionte this year.
spielmanforpres (Aug 30, 2005 9:14:47 PM)
Sorry if this has been addressed earlier, as I am late..... but will the O-Line open holes this year? It seems ages since we've had a dominating offensive line - thx....
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:15:51 PM)
I don't see them being a great run blocking line, but it will definitely be the best of the Tressel era. What I really like here is the depth. You have the top four in Mangold, Sims, Downing and Barton, then another solid 3-4 guys that can come in and get the job done.
buckeyeD (Aug 30, 2005 9:16:31 PM)
Tell me a little bit about these guys... Should we expect big things from any of them in the future? Austin Spitler/Jamer Laurenitis, Aaron Pettrey, Jim Cordle... and tell me something about this kid (wrestler from texas) that walked on at RB.. Does he have a chance to play?
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:16:42 PM)
I wasn't all that impressed with Spitler over the summer, but he has plenty of time.
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:17:12 PM)
Laurenitis, I haven't see play much since practices are closed, but it sounds like they are thinking of using him on special teams this year so he must be doing well.
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:17:40 PM)
Pettrey, haven't seen him kick yet. He was held out of the kick scrimmage last week.
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:18:30 PM)
Cordle: Everyone seems impressed with this kid. He was definitely going to be in the two-deep before the ankle injury. Now, they might redshirt him, but he's someone to get excited about. Definitely the center of the future, starting next year.
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:19:02 PM)
Aston, the wrestler from Texas, will be scout team fodder this year. That
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:19:08 PM)
That's all I know about him right now.
buckeyeD (Aug 30, 2005 9:19:51 PM)
Does Erik Haw take the job from Pittman?
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:19:53 PM)
buckeyeD (Aug 30, 2005 9:20:32 PM)
When does Chris Wells start at RB, what yr?
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:20:53 PM)
Very good question. It will depend on how well Pittman plays this year and how hard Beanie works.
buckeyeD (Aug 30, 2005 9:21:29 PM)
Who is the QB of the future... Boeckman, Robby S., or Henton? Who would the staff prefer step up and take the job outright?
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:21:51 PM)
I'll go with Schoenhoft here. He was impressive over the summer and everyone raved about his arm during camp.
buckeyeD (Aug 30, 2005 9:22:38 PM)
Do you think Pitcock, Holmes, Whitner, or Youboty leave early?
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:22:52 PM)
Holmes and Youboty will be gone. Pitcock and Whitner will stay.
buckeyeD (Aug 30, 2005 9:24:59 PM)
Can you remember this much depth, it seems, almost at every position? And, do you think this team can be better then '02?
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:25:57 PM)
The '98 team comes to mind, but no, this is the most depth I can remember from an OSU team. Statistically, I think this team can be better than the '02 team, but no one is ever topping 14-0.
buckeyeD (Aug 30, 2005 9:27:22 PM)
In order, who ends up the most productive in this group... Worthington, Barrow, Wilson, Gholston, Terry, RWilliams?
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:27:51 PM)
Wilson, Gholston, Worthington, Barrow, Ryan Williams, Terry
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:31:00 PM)
I think Freeman would. Gonzalez, maybe not quite that high, but close. But there's a lot of teams out there with two good WRs.
buckeyeD (Aug 30, 2005 9:31:52 PM)
Who settles into the starting tackle job, by week 4 against Iowa... Steve Rehring or Alex Boone?
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:32:42 PM)
I would have said Rehring for sure before the depth chart was released. Now, I'm not so sure, but I will still go with Rehring. I think being listed as a backup was somewhat of a wake-up call for him.
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:34:13 PM)
Any final questions before we call it a night?
DaveBiddle (Aug 30, 2005 9:36:17 PM)
Thanks to everyone for stopping by... and thanks for the great questions! Always nice talking some Buckeye football.
