Chat Transcript: Gary Housteau

Gary Housteau stopped by club chat today to talk Buckeye football, recruiting and high school football. We have a transcript posted below.

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 1:07:17 PM)
Hi everyone...I'm officially the only one in the Chat room right now. Smile!

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 1:13:11 PM)
I may go see Bill Nagy tonight. My original plan of seeing Euclid and Strongsville was nixed when Thad Gibson got ejected last week. He'll have to sit out this week as well.

buckmark (Sep 2, 2005 1:15:06 PM)
Hey Gary, any visits tis weekend?

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 1:15:06 PM)
Hi buckmark...thanks for kicking off the chat this week. I don't know about any official visits but I'm sure there will be more than a couple of seniors and juniors at the game. A lot of the big games are actually tomorrow up north any way. Next week is the big week for official and unofficial visits.

mulder (Sep 2, 2005 1:17:48 PM)
Gary, who do you see that is closest to getting a OSU offer? Any rumblings out there?

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 1:17:48 PM)
Hi mulder...I think Ohio State is looking closely at the first two or three game films of the remaining prospects and that just happens to coincide with the Ohio State-Texas game. I think you may see a commitment or two after the big game or before (i.e. Tyler Moeller) and a few immediate offers after the Texas game. If I had to guess...I think Nagy, Browning and Adams are three potential offers. I want to see Hartine and Palmer play tomorrow night if I can make it there and they are both potential offers at some point as well.

Kirk (Sep 2, 2005 1:20:20 PM)
Gary, what did you think of Ben Martin? I was putting the footage together of him just now

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 1:20:20 PM)
Hi Kirk, thank you for your assistance with getting today's chat underway. I really like Martin. I had high expectations of him going in and I think they were exceeded by what I saw of him. Terrific prospect. He has to be right up at the top of the junior class already with guys like Torrence, Nate Oliver, Kyle Jefferson, Jermale Hines and others.

mulder (Sep 2, 2005 1:21:35 PM)
I'm sure you saw a lot of the Miami players in high school. Anyone that impressed you that we should look for?

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 1:21:35 PM)
Good question mulder...one guy I really liked from Ursuline, Marcus Johnson, was a really good high school player. I'm looking forward to seeing him Saturday.

mulder (Sep 2, 2005 1:24:16 PM)
Do you think we could actually see any commits coming out of the Texas visits?

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 1:24:16 PM)
I would like to say A.J. Wallace mulder but I don't see him making any commit until January possibly. I have really good vibes about him. Aaron Brown will be there and I have good vibes about him for his Oct. 6 announcement on ESPN. I really like Hornsby and I'm glad he's coming into town for the game. Wells told me a while back that he thinks OSU will have a good shot if he comes in for a visit and presto ... he's coming next week I believe. I don't see any on the spot commits but I see good things coming out of the Texas visits at some point.

buckmark (Sep 2, 2005 1:29:44 PM)
Do you really see an opened-up offense right out of the gate tomorrow? You have always said that you dont really see Tress changing his style to any great degree, after all he has 5 titles playing his way!

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 1:29:44 PM)
His major Tenets are ball control, time of possession, defense, turnover margin, good special teams...and that formula will never change. Will the wrinkles be a little more wrinkly than usual this year? I sure hope so. Let's not forget OSU has two...not one but two...Elite 11 QBs at their disposal and a stable of top notch receivers to throw to. What does that spell for us lay people. Will it ever be Air Tressel....no duh! But they should do more flying this year than a JT-coached team ever has. I just worry about the backside. Why move Sims and insert Datish there if that's the perssonnel you want in the first place. Leaving Sims at tackle and Datish at guard seems more logical. I just assumed the Sims move was precipitated by the readiness of Rhering and Boone.

mulder (Sep 2, 2005 1:32:15 PM)
Are you going to the Colerain vs. Tyler Lee game? What does Colerain need to do to get its offense going?

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 1:32:15 PM)
You betcha mulder I'll be there. They need to do something offensively and quick. Like revamp it in a big way. There's no Dominic Goodman under center to run that offense...or Mister Simpson. Terrence Sherrer was relatively ineffective at RB for Colerain and I thought he was a nice piece for that offense.

OSUBucks22 (Sep 2, 2005 1:36:31 PM)
Hi Gary... you going to be at Brookhaven/Glenville?

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 1:36:31 PM)
You're killing me OSUBucks22...Ohio State starts at 12 and that game kicksoff at 1. I can't be in two places at one time but I would really love to be. I even considered missing the OSU game for about a second before I came to my senses. I have great expectations for that game. I think Glenville wins in a big way. If there is a better football team in Ohio this year than they're a very good one. And I have a ton of respect for Iggy. But after what I witnessed last week...Glenville looked to be in mid season form as far as executing their spread offense. And on defense they're sick. Brookhaven could hang for a while like Mentor if Glenville allows it but it's only a matter of time. They are seriously strong. Now if Bhaven should win...I guess I don't know what I'm talking about. But I was enormously impressed with Glenville last week.

buckmark (Sep 2, 2005 1:40:14 PM)
Do you see many more commits between now and the end of the season? Isnt the season the time for visits typically with a flurry of activity next in early December?

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 1:40:14 PM)
Well if Palmer gets an offer he might commit on the spot. It might take a day or two before Browning would commint. Same with Adams. He would almost surely wait until after the Iowa game. Browning doesn't have an Iowa offer I believe. I would still keep my eye on Joe Thomas if I were OSU and I think they are. He and Connor Smith at guard would be a great pair. But I think Thomas is pretty set on Pitt. I think we will see some movement on some of these Ohio guys in the coming weeks ahead. As I said I may go see Nagy tonight and I'm curious to get a read on him. I was almost going to go see Woodland Hills and Gateway tonight but that's too much driving in a short period of time.

OSUBucks22 (Sep 2, 2005 1:41:59 PM)
Compare Eric Thomas and Ben Martin... do we want to get both?

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 1:42:00 PM)
Yes! Thomas will be another top 10 member of the 2007 class. How about Jahmal Brown from Benedictine...the most underrated player in the state without question. He's a terrific player. Benedictine plays Mentor Lake Catholic on Saturday night...should be a good game.

Mike (Sep 2, 2005 1:45:36 PM)
Hi Gary...Just a comment on Ginn, Jr. I have watched all of the clips and highlights from last year and I am impressed (of course) with everything he does, but as a former CC runner at OSU, I am most impressed with his finishing of a play. He runs through the goal line, full speed, in perfect sprinters fashion...just as he should run across the finish line. No early celebration, no slowing down. He fully inserts that dagger into the other team.

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 1:45:36 PM)
Nice analysis or observation Mike. I think that track background has and will continue to be very beneficial as a football player. Quick story on Ginn last week. There were four ball boys at Mentor last week on Glenville's sideline and I was talking to them throughout the game about good Glenville game. At halftime Ginn and the OSU players showed up and came on the sideline for the second half. When I told the four young boys that was Ted Ginn and pointed at him...they couldn't believe. Teddy was good enough to shake their hands and be cordial to him. Every once in a while I heard them ask Mr. Ginn (Teddy) a question while he was watching the game. I was awesome. They were beside themselves from meeting TGII. Smile!

marksgforce (Sep 2, 2005 1:48:40 PM)
Will Tyler Everett be able to hold off Malcom Jenkins as starting CB all year?

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 1:48:40 PM)
No question markgforce...Tyler Everett is a football player. He'll continue to make big plays as he has through out his career as a Buckeye. The corner positions are in good hands. And the depth will be there in time of need. Never discount that veteran presence that Everett brings to the table. I think he'll do wonderful this year at corner. Jenkins will obviously be a player in his own time. Him and Amos could be the corners of the future and that's a good thing.

OSUBucks22 (Sep 2, 2005 1:52:43 PM)
Will Tyler Moeller have committed before the Texas game? or is that one that we can expect after or during?

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 1:52:44 PM)
I hope it's before OSUBucks22. He or Smith were in no mood to chat after their loss to St. X last week but I hope we're able to hear something from him next week. He's a football player no doubt. Not sure if he's an Big Ten LB but you never know. He might be more of a Jim Leonard type of Wisconsin safety who makes plays. But it would be a great time for him to commit this week if he is indeed going to. And why not? Ohio State or Iowa...Are you kidding me? No offense to the Hawkeyes but this should be a no-brainer.

robochef (Sep 2, 2005 1:54:13 PM)
Hey Gary, Whats the word on Lawrence Wilson? I heard he's a little banged up.

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 1:54:14 PM)
I read that as well robochef and made a phone call to see what I could find out but had no luck tracking down anything. I hope he's just a little banged up and nothing more serious.

mulder (Sep 2, 2005 1:57:21 PM)
We don't hear much about FBs but we need one in this class. Is there any kid in Ohio that is worth an offer as a FB?

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 1:57:21 PM)
The elusive fullback question appears once again. I still haven't put my hat on any one answer or applicant to that question. I saw a good bit of football last week and really didn't run across anything appealing. But I'll keep looking.

Mike (Sep 2, 2005 1:58:13 PM)
Gary, Any reports on how Donald Washington is doing? He's from my area and I'd love any news!!

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 1:58:13 PM)
Sorry Mike I've heard nothing out of the ordinary about Washington. Guys like O'Neal and Jenkins and Amos are the freshmen DBs being talked about the most right now.

marksgforce (Sep 2, 2005 2:02:39 PM)
Have you ever heard the phrase "national champions" uttered by more OSU players in any other year of the Tressel era? Do you feel that this is showing extra focus and resolve? Any concerns?

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 2:02:39 PM)
I thinks it's a statement of confidence more than anything. This defense is as good as it's going to get this year and the window for a NC is open wide right now. When you have guys like Hawk and Carpenter and Salley as seniors, I hope they're talking about championships. These are great football players and it's their last time around. When your head coach has already won five national titles and there are players on the team that have already won one for themselves, this aren't just hollow words these guys are spewing around. They kind of know what they're talking about.

robochef (Sep 2, 2005 2:05:23 PM)
How physical is Miami's defense? I know about there athleticism, but MAC teams are usually all about the offense and not so much about the defense. Couldn't we possibly just out physical them up front and with our newest big back Schnittker?

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 2:05:23 PM)
Ohio State should be able to do anything they want with Miami on both sides of the ball. Who are we kidding? If OSU expects to do anything this year...they need to dispose of Miami in a quick and neat fashion. Ohio State needed a late field goal to beat Marshall last year and that game turned into an accurate barometer of the season. A big win against Miami should be a good sign of things to come for this year.

robochef (Sep 2, 2005 2:08:02 PM)
Are all the seats at the Colerain vs Tyler game general admission? Or is there and assigned seating?

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 2:08:03 PM)
I'm sure Steve would know the answer to that question right off the bat robochef...but I'm sorry I don't know the necessary knowledge to field that one. I'm also looking forward to the first game next Friday as well. I know South has a couple of intriguing prospects on their team in the senior and junior class. I would guess that the seats are all general admission and the Westerville folks will be there early to bag most of the good ones. That's just a guess.

OSUBucks22 (Sep 2, 2005 2:10:45 PM)
You still think we get Wesley Lyons in the end?

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 2:10:45 PM)
I'm sure I'll talk to him and the father on Saturday so I'll have a better read. He might really be serious about early playing time and therefore West Virginia might be his best option. I just don't see it. In the end...I think he's a Buckeye. I'll tell you if I feel any differently after tomorrow. I'll stop by the Lyon tailgate party. I'm sure they'll be on the road all night after their game against Gateway.

bigdbuckeye (Sep 2, 2005 2:16:04 PM)
I was a little shocked to see that O'Neal is the starting nickel back and backup strong safety this early in the season. I figured even with his natural athletic ability that it would take him some time to learn the defense well enough to see significant playing time. Do you think he was able to start learning the defensive scheme early due to the fact that his "big brother" is already on the team?

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 2:16:04 PM)
Hi bigdbuckeye...O'Neal told me last week at the Glenville game that he was going to run with the first unit as a nickel back. It's a good start for him because he doesn't have to understand the entire defense to fill the nickel back role. Just give him an assignment and let him play football. He's got a ton of speed and he hits like a freight train. I'm sure he won't have to cover anyone better than their third best receiver or a tight end on any play and O'Neal should have the upper hand in that matchup anywhere on the field.

robochef (Sep 2, 2005 2:18:02 PM)
Any new word on how Beanie Wells' injury is. I hope it is nothing serious in that it could be a recurring/ nagging injury.

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 2:18:02 PM)
Robochef...I'll probably give Beanie a call tonight or during the day tomorrow to check on his status and hopefully we'll have something on the message board about him before their game with GlenOak tomorrow night. I intend to head to that game after the OSU game whether Wells plays or not. I want to get a good early look at Hartline and Palmer who are coming off a loss to Hudson in week one.

marksgforce (Sep 2, 2005 2:20:08 PM)
Has anyone talked to Chris Wells subsequent to his first game? Any word on how much time he might miss? Is he discouraged after the game?

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 2:20:08 PM)
I sort of answered that one last question. I talked to Chris on Friday or Saturday last week and he said he thought he would play in the game this week but he did have stitches for an wound on his leg and I don't think those would be ready to come out already. If there is no stress fracture than I'm guessing they will wrap his leg up good and he will play. I'll try to find out more before he plays tomorrow night.

OSUBucks22 (Sep 2, 2005 2:24:07 PM)
Gary... do you know anything about Brandon Stephens from Strongsville? he is supposedly visiting for the game tomorrow...

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 2:24:07 PM)
I met Brandon down in San Antonio as he participated in the Army All-American Combine in January. He and Chris Lewis from Strongsville are both pretty solid and very athletic defensive back prospects. They were both down in San Antonio. I was planning on going to their game tonight before the incident with Gibson happened last week. I'm guessing they both might be in Columbus tomorrow as may Gibson.

OSUBucks22 (Sep 2, 2005 2:25:04 PM)
FYI... Coach Beckman said today that Lawrence has been cleared and is/will be running around again just fine

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 2:25:04 PM)
Thanks for the 411...10-4...22! Smile! Good news...glad to hear.

rbuck (Sep 2, 2005 2:27:58 PM)
Gary, Is TGII full time corner and receiver next year?

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 2:27:58 PM)
I don't think he needs to be rbuck. His niche at the college level is obviously as a receiver and that was a needs-based determination in the beginning. Now we may never see him on that side of the ball in college. But I know he still believes he's a cornerback at heart. Can you imagine that...he thinks that's his best position. I have to side with TGII on that one. I think we might see him at corner in the NFL but after another spectacular year or two on offense in college...everyone might just forget about him as a defensive player.

marksgforce (Sep 2, 2005 2:30:02 PM)
Do you think we'll really see one of the young receivers -- Robiskie or Hartline -- with the already crowded stable of Ginn, Holmes, Gonzales, Hall, Lyons, Dukes ...

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 2:30:02 PM)
I wouldn't put it past seeing Hartline out there this year but I would certainly redshirt Robiskie. He's young in age and there's no need to rush him along with all the talent stacked ahead of him right now. I would really like to see Hartline redshirt too but he's already missed one full year of football and I know it's driving him crazy. But I see no reason to use Robiskie this year.

robochef (Sep 2, 2005 2:32:45 PM)
Hey Gary, are there any new updates for the OSU/UT tailgate? Do you know where it will be at? Who also might be there also?

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 2:32:45 PM)
I honestly have no knowledge of that myself at this time. You know how screwed up I am...if Bucknuts wasn't having this tailgate party...I probably would go see Princeton play Shaker Heights in Cleveland and come back down for the Buckeye game. Talking to Mr. Brown last week, they're going up Friday to watch Glenville play next week...I think that's what he told me..and then they play early Saturday and then him and Aaron will go to the OSU Texas game at night on their way home from Shaker Heights. But I'll be at the tailgate...I just don't know where it is.

Mike (Sep 2, 2005 2:36:05 PM)
Gary, Any news on Haw?? In your opinion, is he really the 4th string back or is Pittman the clear starter with 2 other situational (Schnittker-power, Wells-3rd down type) and Haw then as a more every down back? I think all 4 need some time against Miami for some experience.

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 2:36:05 PM)
If Haw is your fourth-string tailback then OSU finally has the kind of depth that we've been clamoring for. I too would hope to see all four but I do think Pittman will get the Lyons share of the carries so he can establish some sort of flow at the position before he goes against Texas. I think we may see Wells as the second TB in the game. But I would completely shocked if Haw does not get any carries. You need to have him game ready every week. He could end up being the guy at any time if injuries strike. Pittman hasn't exactly been injury free in his career.

robochef (Sep 2, 2005 2:37:41 PM)
It seems to me that JT is really hyping up the runningbacks. Is this a good or bad thing To me it could be putting to much pressure on these young guys to perform and that they may try to do "to much" and make mistakes.

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 2:37:41 PM)
I just think he feels pretty good about the guys that will be toting the pigskin for Ohio State this year and that's a good thing. It's time to stop talking about pressure because they game is here and they are expected to perform regardless of there being any pressure or not.

bigdbuckeye (Sep 2, 2005 2:40:13 PM)
I'm a Grove City alum who has been out of state for several years now. I haven't heard much about their football program since Coach Cross left. Any word on the state of the program since his departure?

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 2:40:13 PM)
Haven't heard a whole lot out that program since the Derek Comb days and the highly-touted LB that played there with him. Cross on the other hand got McKinley back to the finals last year so he's doing pretty well I guess.

bigdbuckeye (Sep 2, 2005 2:44:03 PM)
I know you're not big on rankings, but did Wells' first week performance drop him from his lofty #1 RB status in your mind?

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 2:44:03 PM)
In a way bigdbuckeye...I think Wells performed quite well under the circumstances. Clearly Garfield doesn't have much to go with him but he ran very hard, punishing at times, when he carried the ball. He just never got things started. I know the fact that he walked around a lot and didn't do much when he didn't get the ball rubbed some people the wrong way but Wells is truly a competitor I can assure you of that. He is what he is ability wise, regardless of the rankings, and that is still a very impressive thing to witness. He'll be back I'm sure.

rbuck (Sep 2, 2005 2:46:26 PM)
Gary, Do you think we'll put MU away by the Half?

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 2:46:26 PM)
That would be nice. But in all my years...I haven't really seen JT's teams put many teams away by half with the possible exception of a few D-II schools when he was at YSU. "Put away" is a relative term here but OSU should be in a good position by the half I would guess.

marksgforce (Sep 2, 2005 2:49:22 PM)
Do you and other bucknuts staff sit press box in Ohio Stadium? Have you ever tried to give Bruce Hooley a wedgie?

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 2:49:22 PM)
Bruce is a radio guy now so I don't know what his status will be in the press box now. Steve and Dave are usually the guys in the box and I'm down on the field. I watch all my games down on the field, high school included. You just get a different feel and perspective of the game and the players down there that you just don't get from being in the press box or watching the game on a video.

Guest (Sep 2, 2005 2:51:44 PM)
Gary, what's the story with the big TE from Ursuline? is he out for the year because of his grades?

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 2:51:44 PM)
OSUBucks22 is asking about Jerome Jones from Ursuline I'm guessing and yes he is an academic casualty and may become eligible again in time for the 8th or 9th game of the season if he gets his grades in order. I think he's a nice prospect at tight end and linebacker. He's got good size and a frame to put much more weight on. If Ursuline should make the playoffs this year then Jones should be ready to go by then. They play Mentor at Mentor tonight.

rbuck (Sep 2, 2005 2:55:19 PM)
I heard an interview with Coach T, it sounds like Haw might not see the field much tomorrow. Would you venture a guess on how many carries each back get? I promise I will not hold you to it.

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 2:55:19 PM)
I wouldn't venture to guess here. This may be a final punishment for his indescetion or transgression and possibly he won't see the field at all in week one. I just think at some point, Haw needs to have a couple of carries under his belt to get an idea if he's someone the offense can count on or not. If he doesn't play one play then I think it's a consequence of his situation he got himself into off the field. I think Pittman gets the most and Schnittker and Wells both have an equal chance at a few carries as well. Maybe Haw will get zero this week.

GaryHousteau (Sep 2, 2005 2:58:22 PM)
Thanks everyone that will do it for today. I have things to do still before my football weeked gets underway. I really appreciate all of the questions today and I want to thank everyone for participating in the chat and also for reading it at a later time. It's great to talk to Buckeye fans any chance I get. If you see me at a high school game with Bucknuts.com across my back...please say hello. Or you can also e-mail me anytime at h2hsports@zoominternet.net with any comments or questions. Tomorrow is almost here. Can't wait! Have a great weekend. Go Bucks!
