You seem confident about Diebler. Does this mean that Dante Jackson is out of the picture? Also which player do you like better?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:12:04 PM)
I do not believe it means Jackson is completely out of the picture, but it certainly means Jackson, if not obsolete, will really have to get the job done impressing the coaching staff to find room in their plans if Diebler does in fact commit. I like both kids for different reasons, but I believe Diebler is the better player at this time.
buckmark (Sep 13, 2005 9:12:16 PM)
Kyle, what's the latest on this next class? Who is still a possibility and who do you think we end up with, if anyone?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:13:26 PM)
Raymar Morgan will be in to visit this weekend, and contrary to public opinion, Ohio State is not out of the race yet, and he is a possibility. I believe Ohio State is still heavily eyeing Othello Hunter after Morgan makes a decision, and then JUCO forwards Mike White and Takais Brown could be other options later down the road if there are still openings.
whopperjr (Sep 13, 2005 9:13:32 PM)
Did he back out of his commitment to Valpo? Elaborate for me Kyle
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:14:49 PM)
As of this time, i've been told that up until these last few days, Diebler was still committed to Valparaiso, but he and his family had told the school a few months back they were going to look at a few other options. I expect that Diebler will switch his commitment very soon if it's going to happen.
bw1954 (Sep 13, 2005 9:15:02 PM)
Who are the primary 2007 out of state recruits at this time ?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:16:19 PM)
this list includes (among others) Kevin Love, Solomon Alabi, Josh Southern, Julian Vaughn, Rakim Sanders, Durrell Summers, Dar Tucker, Eric Gordon and E'Twaun Moore
MrLogic (Sep 13, 2005 9:16:26 PM)
Would you still give better than 50-50 on Diebler, Kostas and Lauderdale. Who are we most likely to get or are all 3 possible? Anyone else with high hopes of landing?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:17:49 PM)
I'll be very uncharacteristically bold... I honestly believe all three are high percentages (well above 50) right now, and especially Diebler and Lauderdale I would *almost* characterize their commitments as imminent, barring any unforseen changes. Remember though, recruiting is fluid, so what is true today might not remain so tomorrow. But as of today, they all three are well over 50.
buckmark (Sep 13, 2005 9:17:56 PM)
What do you hear about off season workouts?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:19:03 PM)
As far as the physical shape of players, everyone is in great condition. I hear positive feedback from pick-up games and such as to how certain players have progressed (i.e., Jamar Butler), but until the staff is able to see them in the gym (September 20, after school begins), no one will have a real good idea.
MIKE4180 (Sep 13, 2005 9:19:11 PM)
If Diebler commits does it hurt our chances with Raymar?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:19:34 PM)
My inclination is probably not. Diebler is a 2/3, while Morgan is being recruited as a 3/4.
bobcat84 (Sep 13, 2005 9:19:42 PM)
Chances OSU gets a "Love" visit?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:20:07 PM)
Too early to say. I'll have more on this in the Schott column, but the Love recruitment won't have a lot more going on until spring.
jawnly211 (Sep 13, 2005 9:20:13 PM)
how many ships can we give out to 2007? 2008? thanks
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:21:01 PM)
Right now, the staff reportedly is operating with the mindset of taking about four players in the class of 2007, but I would imagine if it were the right situation, they could take five. I expect four, and then three in the 2008 class.
NYCBuckeye (Sep 13, 2005 9:21:18 PM)
With the Huggins mess in Cincy do see the Bucks with a shot at the Mayo/Walker NCHill combo?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:22:07 PM)
I really don't. I don't believe the Ohio State staff has any interest in them for the most part. Sure, who wouldn't want an O.J. Mayo? But the fact is, they are happy with the direction of players they are getting by way of character, chemistry, and also talent. I just don't see them going that direction.
buckmark (Sep 13, 2005 9:22:19 PM)
what is the status of the NCAA response? When will they hear from them again?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:22:44 PM)
It's unlikely there will be anything significant to report until Ohio State's hearing in December. Around that time, we could hear a final ruling.
MrLogic (Sep 13, 2005 9:22:54 PM)
If they take 4 in 2007 and Diebler, Kostas and Lauderdale are better than 50 percent chance, who would be the 4th (i.e. what position)
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:24:19 PM)
That is probably a fluid issue because of the versaility of all three. For instance, if Ohio State could land a Kevin Love, they would put him at PF and then Lauderdale in the post and Koufos on the wing. If they got a Rakim Sanders, they could slide Koufos up to the four. Likewise, a Solomon Alabi could slide Lauderdale down to the four. It really all depends. So much could change, so I think it's just, "hey let's bring in the best guys we can get, and then sort it out later."
MIKE4180 (Sep 13, 2005 9:24:46 PM)
What kind of interest is Gates showing OSU?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:25:34 PM)
Gates likes Ohio State. It's probably going to be a long time before he really does anything of note. He was in both Ann Arbor and Columbus on Saturday. Michigan and Ohio State are both schools he likes. Cincinnati under Bob Huggins was another major player previously.
bw1954 (Sep 13, 2005 9:25:38 PM)
Give us your top 5 in the Big 10 this year ..
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:26:01 PM)
Michigan State, Michigan, Ohio State, Illinois and Wisconsin
Bellbuck (Sep 13, 2005 9:26:14 PM)
I'm not sold on Butler being able to handle the point. If he can't, how effective will Mayes be?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:27:18 PM)
Mayes is cut of the Scoonie Penn mold with great quickness and the ability to score from either spot on the floor. He should be effective whenever he's on the floor, but I think his abilities off the ball better suit him. Don't also discount Ron Lewis who would log some minutes at the point.
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:27:43 PM)
Let me also add, Jamar Butler will be given first crack to hold down the PG position. The staff still has high hopes he will do just that.
UABuckeye (Sep 13, 2005 9:27:53 PM)
Seems like Ohio is having a better than normal run of top BB talent in 2006-2008. Is this just a weird coincidence or do you see this trend continuing? Has there been a better run of talent that you can think of in Ohio?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:29:15 PM)
Someone like Chris Johnson of HoopScoopOnline who has scouted Ohio certainly thinks this is the best run in a long while, so I think that says a lot. To better answer your question, I think it's perhaps just a case of basketball having some better programs in the state, and kids are getting more exposure, and it's having a domino effect.
MrLogic (Sep 13, 2005 9:29:19 PM)
Where is Roe leaning and does OSU have a shot?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:30:40 PM)
Roe loves the Carolina schools, but it's really early for him. I talked to his mother at an event earlier this summer, and she seemed to think playing close to home would be a priority in the long run. Michigan is showing him a lot of attention, but Ohio State hasn't really done much that i'm aware of. The only reason I could think of for that is that he does not have an outside shot yet. We'll see what happens.
whopperjr (Sep 13, 2005 9:30:51 PM)
Kyle thanks for doing this. You are the man! Do you think Ron Lewis is the scoring threat the Buckeyes have desperately needed to be a force in the Big Ten this year and do you think he is capable of being All-Big Ten caliber player?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:31:48 PM)
I'm not sure he's the savior, but he and Mayes will add a much needed boost in the backcourt scoring department. Lewis definitely gives them a guy to get free throws, and I don't think you can accurately measure just how important that will be. I do feel he's an All-Big Ten type of player.
bobcat84 (Sep 13, 2005 9:32:09 PM)
Do you feel TM will schedule some Ohio MAC schools in the future? I hope OSU does not face OU this year in the tourney....OU will be tough.
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:33:13 PM)
It seems Matta is heading that direction. I'm not sure they will do it often, but I think you will see one team a year and rotate similar to how football does it. Matta does seem interested in building up intra-regional rivalries too though (i.e., a Kentucky, Louisville, CIncinnati, or something along those lines).
MrLogic (Sep 13, 2005 9:34:14 PM)
Since Redd left college, we have not had anyone who was quick enough to go one-on-one and get a shot off. Do Mayes and Lewis fall into that category? Conley, Cook or Lighty?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:35:58 PM)
I would say yes to all of them. Mayes seems to be the quickest of all those players you mentioned, and Cook and Lewis are both guys that are really smooth on the dribble and don't wow you with quickness, but they get through the lane rather well. Conley is not so much real quick as he's great with the ball and really smart with it. Plus, having a runner that can be used with either his left or right hand is a big weapon to have.
Oxford (Sep 13, 2005 9:36:26 PM)
Seems like the Bucks have offerred or are recruiting a number 4/5s from the 2007 class. Are they waiting on someone specific or are they going to take the first 1 or 2 that commit?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:37:31 PM)
I'm sure they probably have specific preferences, but the guys they are recruiting are all guys that if they can get, they will take. It will most likely be a handful of guys offered, and then the first ones willing to commit will be accepted. And as I said earlier, that might also be a work in progress depending on who can play what position.
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:38:40 PM)
Another key factor here... is what Raymar Morgan does. Right now, their efforts appear to be focused on him, and so to a certain extent, it doesn't matter where they stand with several of these 2007 players because Morgan could change their approach to many of them.

Allow me to remind everyone of some upcoming Bucknuts chats over the next week...
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:40:02 PM)
Thursday Steve will conduct a chat with subscribers at 1 PM, and then Gary will follow him up on Friday with a chat also at 1 PM.
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:40:39 PM)
Then on Monday, Bucknuts welcomes Scout.com recruiting analyst Chris Pool at 3 PM, and Tuesday evening (time TBD), Dave Biddle will chat.
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:41:04 PM)
Our next basketball chat is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, September 27
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:41:12 PM)
Now, let the questions resume
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:42:23 PM)
drderm asked on the board why Ohio State does not target Chris Wright a little harder...
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:43:12 PM)
my answer to that is probably shooting. I don't think his perimeter game or shot is up to par for what Ohio State is looking for. He's an amazing athlete, and I know a few coaches that love his game. If Wright improves there, you'll see them step up their efforts.
buckmark (Sep 13, 2005 9:43:17 PM)
Kyle, what is the upcoming schedule for the team? Work with coaches, beginning of practice, etc.
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:44:50 PM)
Next week, the coaches will begin to be allowed to have individual workouts and some workouts here and there with the players. As of now, they aren't permitted to do so until class begins. Official practice time begins on October 14 this year at 7 PM, as opposed to the traditional "Midnight Madness". No word as of yet on whether Ohio State will practice at 7:00, or wait until midnight and do some sort of fan event.
MrLogic (Sep 13, 2005 9:44:58 PM)
What is the timeframe for the 3(Kostas, Lauderdale, Diebler) to make a commitment?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:45:50 PM)
Diebler within days or weeks. Lauderdale could be in a couple of weeks, couple of months, or could still be next spring. I think it will be sooner rather than later, but it's not set in stone. Koufos is most likely going to wait until spring, but he could possibly surprise people out of the blue.
whopperjr (Sep 13, 2005 9:46:12 PM)
Kyle, Do you know of any sophomore's to be that are showing great interest in the Buckeyes besides B.J. Mullens?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:47:01 PM)
Yancy Gates is about the only one right now, but Ohio State also hasn't really focused that far down the line yet. They are busy with the 2006 and 2007 players, and I think you'll see more names pop up by March.
MIKE4180 (Sep 13, 2005 9:47:10 PM)
What the staff think of Ivan improvements this summer? I think he would be the perfect fit for the 2006 class if he improves his handles and rebounding
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:47:57 PM)
That question won't really be able to be answered until October. Once they can see him in practice and see how his mentality has changed (if at all), they can make an assesment. As similar to most of the others, he worked hard conditioning, but we'll see what else he did.
buckmark (Sep 13, 2005 9:48:02 PM)
Are there any more visits on the horizon? When do you expect Morgan to announce?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:48:40 PM)
Morgan will be the only official visit (most likely) for a while, but some other unofficials could come up. I do know that 6-9 Josh Southern from Saginaw, Mich. plans to take a trip to Ohio State in the next few weeks.
whopperjr (Sep 13, 2005 9:48:50 PM)
Do we know who tOSU is playing in this years Big Ten ACC Shootout?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:49:18 PM)
Virginia Tech. That's on the 29th of November...a Monday.
dials (Sep 13, 2005 9:49:38 PM)
KYle, just got here so don't know if its been asked. But, I hear we are in on some new guys-never heard of them but Dispatch said someone might commit? If they commit, what about Morgan, do we have enough schollies because of reduction, and are these or this new guy any good?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:50:25 PM)
That article referred to 6-9 JUCO PF, Othello Hunter. He really loved his visit to Ohio State a week and a half ago. I think he could commit to Ohio State, but first they will try to get Raymar Morgan and worry about Hunter after that.
bobcat84 (Sep 13, 2005 9:50:30 PM)
Kyle, do you plan on doing a follow-up interview on the Thad4 visitors to the Texas game? Interested in their thoughts on the atmosphere and feeling towards being Buckeyes. Sorry if you did one and I missed it,,,,thanks again and keep up the good work.
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:51:27 PM)
There has already been an interview with David Lighty finished up last night, it's just a matter of when we get the chance to get it posted. I've been working on getting a hold of Greg Oden, but last night I couldn't reach him. Stay tuned though, i'm working on more interviews.
bballbucks (Sep 13, 2005 9:51:52 PM)
will they take Hunter and Morgan or just one, do you think its possible to get them both and what would that do to lauderdale and Koufas
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:52:29 PM)
I think the working plan is to take six players, but they will probably figure out their focus for the last position after Morgan makes up his mind.
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:53:13 PM)
We've got about 10 more minutes if anyone has any last questions!
buckmark (Sep 13, 2005 9:53:59 PM)
I might have missed it, but when does Morgan anticipate a decision?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:54:39 PM)
He plans to make his decision at the end of the month. If he takes a Michigan State visit, it's likely to be the first week of October, and he will decide shortly after that. So bottom line here: next three weeks or so.
dials (Sep 13, 2005 9:54:46 PM)
Kyle, do you get the sense that Morgans mom wants him to go to Ohio State?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:54:58 PM)
I believe her preference is Michigan State.
dials (Sep 13, 2005 9:56:17 PM)
Where does Kyle Lamb see Morgan ending up when its all said and done?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:56:51 PM)
Right now Michigan State is the safe bet, but do not count out Michigan or Ohio State here. I truly don't believe his mind is made up, and the visits could sway things.
buckmark (Sep 13, 2005 9:57:10 PM)
thanks for the chat Kyle. I love the stepped up focus on basketball that Bucknuts is giving us. looking forward to more great info and opinion.
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:57:33 PM)
And thanks to all those who have shown the interested and given a reason to make this a fun place to be. Certainly it has been fun, and should only get better.
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:58:55 PM)
I will use this as a segue to bid a fond adieu for the rest of the evening, but as I said earlier in the chat, stay tuned for a Schott in the Arm coming out late tonight, or tomorrow sometime. It will deal a lot more with these recruits (Morgan, Diebler, Hunter, Lauderdale, Koufos, Love, and many more), as well as thoughts on the schedule and much, much more. Stay tuned for that
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 13, 2005 9:59:12 PM)
