Here is a chat transcript from our Bucknuts Fan Club chat with Jerry Rudzinski from 4-11.

KirkLarrabee  (Apr 11, 2002 7:50:27 PM)
ok... I think we got it now

george (Apr 11, 2002 7:50:31 PM)

rudzinski (Apr 11, 2002 7:50:36 PM)
kirk, are we all set and in the right spot.

nbuck  (Apr 11, 2002 7:50:51 PM)
hi jerry ain't technology wonderfull?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 7:50:52 PM)
Wilhelm told me tuesday he's ready. it's just precaution.

george (Apr 11, 2002 7:50:54 PM)
will Wilhelm be at 100% for football season?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 7:51:06 PM)
absolutely yes. better than ever

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 7:51:29 PM)
wilhelm is huge. I thought it was vrabes for a second

KirkLarrabee  (Apr 11, 2002 7:51:41 PM)
I saw Matt... couldn't believe how big he was

dragonknight  (Apr 11, 2002 7:52:02 PM)
How's his ankle coming?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 7:52:19 PM)
i hear you. you aren't supposed to be that big and that fast. is ankle is fine.

george (Apr 11, 2002 7:52:11 PM)
I read your article about Krenzel. . . . do you really believe that he can be a leader after not challenging a subpar QB last year?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 7:53:09 PM)
I definitely think krenzel can. All these reps he's getting are great. he's a new player. new leader. solid guy. character goes over into the football field

nbuck  (Apr 11, 2002 7:52:20 PM)
how is qb battle shaping up

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 7:53:50 PM)
it helps having competition behind as well. that is hurting us on the o-line. those guys are relaxed and comfortable as starters. not tailbacks and qb's

dragonknight  (Apr 11, 2002 7:53:45 PM)
How is McMullen looking

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 7:54:51 PM)
McMullen looks decent. He fumbled some snaps today, but that happens. He seems a bit more jittery than krenzel right now. With those two it is back and forth. I still like krenzel in the end.

george (Apr 11, 2002 7:54:17 PM)
we have yet to see Zwick and he is the most competition for krenzel this year right?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 7:55:21 PM)
Zwick is a threat. And clarett makes sure krenzel is reminded of that. ha ha.

nbuck (Apr 11, 2002 7:54:48 PM)
where do you think the freshman lb will fit in?

george  (Apr 11, 2002 7:56:13 PM)
being a former great OSU LB do you have a feeling that we may gotten a great LB or two in this recruiting class?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 7:56:27 PM)
first off, the "cie grant to linebacker" is working great. he was in a yellow today (hurt), but he is running like the hurricane linebackers. he's a low 4.4 guy.

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 7:56:37 PM)
Carpenter is my freshman. Love him.

george  (Apr 11, 2002 7:56:44 PM)
me too

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 7:56:53 PM)
mean, intense, ferocious, and extra mean.

dragonknight  (Apr 11, 2002 7:57:05 PM)
How's Cooper looking?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 7:58:57 PM)
you know what you are getting with cooper. he will take a head off and then take a play off. he was with the 1's today because of grant's injury.

MrBucknuts  (Apr 11, 2002 7:56:51 PM)
Hey Jerry - Any of the walk-ons look like they could contribute?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 7:58:07 PM)
stafford on the o-line, bond at linebacker and special teams. caldwell can help. Although those aren't the new walk-ons...they are proven. They have a bunch of db's out there that are walk-ons, I am still feeling them out. Not sure yet, but some can really play.

rudzinski (Apr 11, 2002 7:59:38 PM)
i am high on Cooper. I had him as my starter opposite reynolds until grant has exploded. I like grants speed.

nbuck  (Apr 11, 2002 7:59:09 PM)
how will the current lb take to mike d andrea coming in i mean with all the hype of the big kat i think you were there then what were your feelings about him and the hype?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:01:20 PM)
It's up to D'Andrea. the older guys will help him unless D'Andrea has an attitude. If he has an attitude, they will exclude him from being on the inside of the core of the team. what I hear is D'andrea wants to learn. they will help him out. Andy wasn't starting until Rodell Dupree failed. Andy kept his mouth shut and worked hard. People looked out for him.

dragonknight (Apr 11, 2002 8:00:15 PM)
Any chance of him becoming an every play player? Is he taking better angles?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:01:43 PM)
Grant and Cooper could be every down players. they are both taking good angles. I wish arden

rudzinski (Apr 11, 2002 8:02:01 PM)
sorry, I hit the wrong button...i wish arden's angles were a bit better.

MrBucknuts (Apr 11, 2002 8:02:05 PM)
Jerry, have you seen BJ Sander punt this year? Is he making any progress (ie getting more consistent)?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:03:03 PM)
similar to his past years. unless, groom gets hurt, Sanders will not be punting. He can boom them, but he can miss too. It's a matter of Groom's athleticism being on another level.

nbuck  (Apr 11, 2002 8:03:35 PM)
how is luke fickell working out and what are his primary duties?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:04:18 PM)
His main duties are punt team and d-line. he will also be with punt block, ko, and ko return. Punt is his baby though. That is all him.

dragonknight  (Apr 11, 2002 8:05:02 PM)
Any chance Arden goes back to DE when Wilhelm is back in the mix? Duane had confirmed him at DE last chat.

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:07:05 PM)
There is a chance...definately...hasn't happened yet though. He is a big anchor point in the middle. great on iso's. Needs to get outside better. With pagac playing the way he is...he may move. But he is only going to be redshirt frosh. we should be patient. there is no spot waiting at end. I haven't given up on his speed yet, but he is awfully big out there.

buckeye83  (Apr 11, 2002 8:06:09 PM)
most to least concern for the 2002 team...would this be accurate 1)OL 2)CB 3)QB 4)FB?

rudzinski (Apr 11, 2002 8:08:57 PM)
I personally put qb at 4. It is of huge importance, but those are 4th year guys we have. O-line is number one with our lack of depth and the practice they had today. Fox makes me feel better about corner. Joe is unproven at fullback. I go 1.oline 2. cb 3. fullback and 4. qb. This is the first year though that I am thinking we could be okay in all of them

rudzinski (Apr 11, 2002 8:09:39 PM)
chattams was showing some things today, but those top three we have look so good.

george (Apr 11, 2002 8:09:28 PM)
truthfully, do you see pitcock having a chance to be a star this year with the talent we have already?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:10:55 PM)
I am hoping he can, but my mind tells me he can not. Scott, Fraser, Anderson, and the boys. Peterson looks good. Pitcock should get in the rotation, but I don't think he will start.

dragonknight (Apr 11, 2002 8:10:09 PM)
top 3 as Gamble,Vance and Jenkins i'm guessing. Will Bam see the field?

buckeye83  (Apr 11, 2002 8:11:08 PM)
who are the leader s for punt and ko returns

george  (Apr 11, 2002 8:11:43 PM)
by putiing doss back to return kicks are they hoping for a heisman run?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:12:15 PM)
good questions. Ross, Vance, gamble, Hall, and doss will return. but Allen and Fraser are the guys I see as the leaders on those units.

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:12:42 PM)
I think with Doss it was..."what can we do with this guy to keep him at OSU."

buckeye83  (Apr 11, 2002 8:12:46 PM)
why not Bam with his speed and quickness?

rudzinski (Apr 11, 2002 8:13:46 PM)
good point, I left him out. he is electric. I hate to say it though, but those long legs of some of those guys help them run faster. No one can change directions like bam though. He will get some touches on returns.

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:14:25 PM)
By the way, Drew Carter is coming around. He showed some glimpses today of why he is a track superstar.

george  (Apr 11, 2002 8:14:29 PM)
are any of them going to "take it to the house

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:14:37 PM)
I think Hall will.

george (Apr 11, 2002 8:15:00 PM)
we didn't do that much (if at all ) last year

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:15:06 PM)
Hall is having himself a nice spring. He looks a lot thicker

dragonknight  (Apr 11, 2002 8:15:20 PM)
What do you think of Ja Ja staying at RB?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:16:30 PM)
I think he stays there. With all this youth, we don't know how things will shake-out. My guess is he is there until AT LEAST next spring. I think he looks good.

buckeye83 (Apr 11, 2002 8:15:34 PM)
what do you think of the team chemistry so far and is it better or worse then past years. with the talented freshmen class coming in to challenge for playing time does this concern you?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:18:04 PM)
Team chemistry looks good. You can tell the Tressel system has kicked in full gear. The transition is complete in my mind. As far as the freshman, it shouldn't be any concern. Players have enough to worry about with themselves. I can honestly say that players at OSU realize they can get better. People actually want to see others succeed. Players even at the same position help each other out.

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:19:08 PM)
that sounds strange, but it is true. Miller and bellisari helped me out. I helped out andy and ott and Courtland and Diggs.

george  (Apr 11, 2002 8:19:15 PM)
are we going to be a top ten team like they are picking us in the early polls or are our question marks too big

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:20:48 PM)
We will flirt with it at some point, but I don't see us finishing there. But, I do think we can win the big ten. Spielman and I talked about some of the big ten is there for the taking.

buckeye83  (Apr 11, 2002 8:19:54 PM)
anything we are going to see out of the offense that we did not last year i.e. screen passes, more passes to the RBs, FBs and TEs?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:22:36 PM)
They screened to death today. That is all I saw at one point. I think the offense will be similar. If we were going to go to the tight ends, last year was the year to do it with Sanders. It will be a part of the offense, but I still think it will be Ross and the boys about half the time, and Jenkins and the boys the other half. I would like to see more first down diversification. It was run, run, run last year.

george (ID=29) (Apr 11, 2002 8:21:42 PM)
will our defense go to a blitzing style with all of the speed that we are showing at every position?

rudzinski (Apr 11, 2002 8:24:08 PM)
We will definitely blitz, but not quite as much as the Pagac years. that was insane. We had the corners and we had an insane coach. Dantonio's eyes light up when he sees Grant's speed though. We will be very, very active on defense, but it is true about the need them out there to send people.

dragonknight (Apr 11, 2002 8:21:51 PM)
Who do you see as the other Big Ten contenders?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:25:38 PM)
Big ten is Michigan, Michigan State, OSU, and I am still feeling out Wisconsin. MSU has receivers and a quarterback. Watch out for them. Some think this gunslinger from Purdue will be special, but I say no defense and no chemistry. Iowa will be very competitive

Kirk L.  (Apr 11, 2002 8:26:44 PM)
I like that Wisconsin offense on paper with Lee Evans and Anthony Davis and isn't Bollinger back for his 60th season?

dragonknight  (Apr 11, 2002 8:26:45 PM)
What do you think for Wisconsin and ill?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:27:55 PM)
Illinois does not have Kittner. He was their Germaine. He moved the chains on third downs. Kirk , that is a good point about Davis. He will be awesome.

buckeye83  (Apr 11, 2002 8:27:37 PM)
Would you describe the differences/similarities between a Coach Tressel and Coach Cooper practice session?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:34:17 PM)
Tressel and Cooper...let's see...Cooper's were always special teams, individuals, inside (9-on-7), 7-on-7 (skeleton), and team. Tressel mixes it up more. Tressel seems to work a bit less on individuals. Tressel's practices seem a bit longer. I like the fact that tressel mixes it up. I am having a tough time on the contact issue. Tressel will do so much against air, but then they will take guys to the ground more often. With Cooper, you would always bang, but a scrimmage was an all out scrimmage. Guys would come ready to bring it when we were gonna scrimmage. It was like a game. I will say that I have seen fewer fights on the field with Tressel. Either good chemistry or less intensity. I know we all want it to good chemistry. I am sicko and don't mind seeing guys lock it up every so often. That just means they want to be good. Toughness is key, and the great Woody teams, Lombardi teams, parcells' teams, etc. has some skirmishes. that sounds odd, but is reality. Coaches can never, ever, ever sa

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:36:05 PM)
got cut off, but I was saying coaches need to discipline guys that fight, but don't let it bother you too much. Flags lose games, but lack of intensity and lack of physical play also loses games. It is a fine line.

Kirk L. (Apr 11, 2002 8:31:08 PM)
Jerry, gotta put you on the spot here... I know you like to never predict a Buckeye loss, but what is your early estimate on the Buckeye record this year?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:37:13 PM)
Kirk, as far as record. I will say 11-3, 10-4. Let me see how Krenzel ends up looking. He better look good after the article I just wrote.

dragonknight  (Apr 11, 2002 8:37:35 PM)
Does TT or WSU scare you?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:37:42 PM)
sorry if my answers are long. this is new to me.

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:38:16 PM)
yes, absolutely, without question. if TT was away, I would be petrified. We should win that though at home.

george  (Apr 11, 2002 8:38:54 PM)
I thought the players last year were more conservative with their antics than in the cooper era, less celebration and more "proper" in their conduct is that a tressel trait?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:39:27 PM)
I'd say tressel really emphasizes that. Absolutely.

Kirk L. (Apr 11, 2002 8:38:30 PM)
Jerry, who are your sleeper players to really emerge and make a name for themselves this year?

rudzinski (Apr 11, 2002 8:40:25 PM)
gamble should break out. Smith may end up being an all-american before it is over. Fox will be a crowd favorite. Grant is my break out guy though. He seems to be at home at LB.

Kirk L.  (Apr 11, 2002 8:40:32 PM)
Well guys it's almost 8:30... any final questions for Jerry? Also I will stick around after and chat for a few minutes if you'd like to

buckeye83  (Apr 11, 2002 8:40:37 PM)
who needs to step it up or face dropping down the depth chart in the fall

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:42:14 PM)
That is tough. Wow. Defensively, it is true with everyone across the board, but at the two deep. O-line doesn't have any depth so that is not an issue. Maybe Ross, because Hall came to play. Ross is still my guy though, but Hall is not backing down.

dragonknight  (Apr 11, 2002 8:41:02 PM)
is our FG kicking game gonna be significantly improved

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:42:26 PM)
FG should be much improved. You have my word on it.

george  (Apr 11, 2002 8:42:05 PM)
will we be a low scoring team that wins with our defense or can we put points on the board and take some pressure off of our D

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:43:26 PM)
we will win games the way we did against Michigan. Our defense should be better than last year. You win with defense. Our offense should have better big play capabilities due to the confidence of the receivers. They are not faster, just more confident

dragonknight  (Apr 11, 2002 8:43:22 PM)
What are Clarett's chances of playing this year?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:44:10 PM)
Clarett will be in there. He will be used. Honestly, it is too early to tell how much, but I can tell you he will be a weapon.

george (Apr 11, 2002 8:43:39 PM)
who is the best QB in the Big Ten? kid from MSU?

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:44:51 PM)
Kirk, you may know better than I . I like the kid from MSU, but my sleeper is Orton at Purdue.

Kirk L. (ID=34) (Apr 11, 2002 8:45:10 PM)
After that PSU game, we can't forget Zach Mills too.

rudzinski (ID=28) (Apr 11, 2002 8:45:16 PM)
Good point.

rudzinski (ID=28) (Apr 11, 2002 8:45:30 PM)
Bollinger is just Bollinger.

dragonknight (ID=26) (Apr 11, 2002 8:44:46 PM)
Will we beat Michigan? :)

rudzinski (Apr 11, 2002 8:45:05 PM)
You better believe it. I think we got in their minds.

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:45:10 PM)
I sure hope so.

george (Apr 11, 2002 8:45:47 PM)
is the Big Ten on the rise or is it staying where its at

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:46:18 PM)
The big ten is staying where it is. We are a year out in my mind.

rudzinski  (Apr 11, 2002 8:47:07 PM)
Fella's, I need to spend some time with my Valentine. Thanks for the conversation. Talk to you soon.

buckeye83  (Apr 11, 2002 8:47:12 PM)
Very good and informative answers. Thanks Jerry!

dragonknight  (Apr 11, 2002 8:47:21 PM)
thanks Mr. Rudzinski

Kirk L.  (Apr 11, 2002 8:47:27 PM)
Thank you for joining us Jerry! It was a lot of fun. Talk to you soon! :D

george  (Apr 11, 2002 8:47:31 PM)
thanks Jerry
