Good morning everyone...welcome to today's chat. It will be a shorter session today due to the fact that I'm headed to Cleveland for Glenville's game at 3 o'clock this afternoon. So if you have any questions fire away.
scribeohio (Sep 16, 2005 11:04:54 AM)
Gary, is coach Ginn back on the sidelines?
GaryHousteau (Sep 16, 2005 11:04:54 AM)
Hi scribe...No Ginn is still in the press box and he sort of likes it up there. He's still not back to 100 percent but he's coming around more each week.
GaryHousteau (Sep 16, 2005 11:06:20 AM)
I have a feature story I'm working on of him and his program for the next issue of Ohio High magazine. You can never see too many Glenville games in my opinion so I thought I'd head on out early this afternoon to see them play today.
rbuck (Sep 16, 2005 11:18:55 AM)
Hi Gary, Because of what he has already done to the program, I will never bash JT. Sometimes he just really makes you scratch your head. Every one knows our two most skilled offensive players ar Santonio and TGII, why didn't they get more touches?
GaryHousteau (Sep 16, 2005 11:18:55 AM)
Hi rbuck...I've been closely watching JT's teams for nearly 20 years now and I still have yet to figure out any type of consistent rhyme or reason other than offense is something that is played when the defense or special teams are not on the field. At YSU it was total smashmouth and now I have no idea what Tresselball is all about. But the overall philosophy seems to consistently be to play not to lose. I have no answers or explanations.
RoboticBuckeye (Sep 16, 2005 11:24:51 AM)
Hello Gary, I heard the O-line graded out better in the UT game than the OU game. From what is saw UT D-line gave our QB’s no time to even look at the second receiver. What's your take? Thanks
GaryHousteau (Sep 16, 2005 11:24:51 AM)
Hi robot...considering OSU hardly even went down the field with the ball it's hard to determine if that was the case or not. I guess the numerous QB draws were designed to take advantage of a big rush by the line...considering OSU never runs a screen pass to the running back...obviously Justin was flushed out late in the game when he fumbled the ball. I don't even know if there were second receivers in many patterns...This offense just laid an egg period and that's too bad. I would have rather have seen Ginn in the shot gun running draws if they were so enamored with that play.
RoboticBuckeye (Sep 16, 2005 11:26:33 AM)
After Pittman was injured it seemed he couldn’t make a cut and was not as effective. Do you think JT has little confidence in Schnittker, Haw or Wells and would rather go with a banged up Pittman?
GaryHousteau (Sep 16, 2005 11:26:33 AM)
He obviously doesn't have much confidence in anyone but Pittman at this time. Here's hoping Wells will be the answer. Boy a guy by the name of Tyrell Sutton might look nice in this spread formation. Haw may never get out of the dog house.
Guest (Sep 16, 2005 11:30:47 AM)
Hey Gary, I am from Youngstown. I was just wondering if there are kids being highly recruited by OSU coming out of that area?
GaryHousteau (Sep 16, 2005 11:30:47 AM)
Hi Terno...I too am from Y-town and the only one getting a look this year really would be Derrell Johnson from Cardinal Mooney. I think he's being considered as a wideout/athlete and he plays QB at Mooney this year. He came over from Campbell Memorial last year. In the junior class there's Danny Herron from Harding and there's at least one lineman from Hubbard, Marcus O'Hara and one from West Branch, Sharp, that I'm aware of. Angelo Babbaro of Canfield this year might get a look from Cincinnati or maybe a MAC school...but overall the talent pool is down this season.
mdbuckeye (Sep 16, 2005 11:31:13 AM)
Do you see JT leaving the defense in the game into the 4th quarter to allow us to get a shutout?
GaryHousteau (Sep 16, 2005 11:31:13 AM)
Hi mdbuckeye...he didn't in the Miami game so I would have to say no.
ImBack45 (Sep 16, 2005 11:34:50 AM)
Hi Gary, listening to a michigan radio station this morning and they are just glowing about javon ringer at msu. Did we think the kid was not good enough, or why was he not offered?
GaryHousteau (Sep 16, 2005 11:34:50 AM)
Hi ImBack45...Ohio State has ignored the top running backs in the state of Ohio the past two years in Ray Williams, who granted had his share of problems, and then last year with Ringer and Sutton. I have friends at MSU who absolutely love Ringer. I haven't seen him or Sutton this year but I loved both of them. I am particularly fond of Sutton because I got to know him so well. The only reason why I think they didn't get either, although they were recruiting Ringer and not Sutton, is because they had M. Wells in the bag early and that was the only "small" back they wanted to bring in. I'm glad Sutton and Ringer are in the Big Ten so I'll get to see them play on occasion. Both are great young men. Let's hope Wells has an impact here at OSU similar to both of those two at their respective schools.
mdbuckeye (Sep 16, 2005 11:36:22 AM)
If I were the SDSU QB I wouldn't want to even play this game. You would have to think AJ and Bobby are going to be pretty amped up.
GaryHousteau (Sep 16, 2005 11:36:22 AM)
Love our defense still. Our LBs are off the charts. The secondary didn't play particularly well against Texas I thought and I was hoping the D-line had a bigger impact. But the linebackers are solid as a rock. Yeah SDSU just may submit at some point in the game. lol.
mulder (Sep 16, 2005 11:38:58 AM)
You seem to have some optimism about Browning getting an offer. What about Nagy? And what about timing?
GaryHousteau (Sep 16, 2005 11:38:58 AM)
Hi mulder...multiple sources have alerted me about a potential offer coming to Browning so that's why I have optimism for him. I haven't heard the same sentiments about Nagy or Palmer yet but maybe I just haven't spoken to all the right people. I think all three of those guys are still in play...and maybe they can still pursuade Joe Thomas to come for an official visit now that Pitt is off to such a thrilling start. I think once Brown makes his decision official...the dominos will start to fall. Browning has the grades so that's not an issue with him.
buckicrazy (Sep 16, 2005 11:41:05 AM)
Do you see tOSU stretching the field more this week. I can't believe we didn't try to throw the ball deep against Texas.
GaryHousteau (Sep 16, 2005 11:41:05 AM)
Hi buckicrazy...I'm certain OSU will go verticle in a big way, especially early. JT will look like an offensive guru once again and all the problems will be solved in one game. Till Iowa comes to town and the vest gets tightened once again. The bigger the game the more conservative the tendencies usually become. But I forecast a tremendous offensive outburst this week.
mulder (Sep 16, 2005 11:45:28 AM)
What does OSU have to do to be able to punch the ball in when in the red zone?
GaryHousteau (Sep 16, 2005 11:45:28 AM)
Catch the ball in the end zone for one. That was the back-breaking play of the game. But there's a lot of veterans on this line and they should be able to line up and get anything short yardage they need to, in or out of the redzone.
RoboticBuckeye (Sep 16, 2005 11:52:43 AM)
Hello Gary, Zwick came up limping after the fumble to Texas. Do you know if he re-injured his ankle sprain or if he is practicing?
GaryHousteau (Sep 16, 2005 11:52:44 AM)
Robo I don't know if Zwick was injured or not after the Texas game. He didn't seem to be. Again I am one of the few who think JZ deserved more than two series on offense to start the game, especially when his receivers short-circuited his first drive with drop passes. Zwick played admirable in the Alamo Bowl and then had a strong game against Miami and for that he was rewarded with two series to start the game. I am surprised that JT came out so early in the week and named Smith as the starter because again I think JZ should have had the chance to win the job during the week. He could have unequivocally named his starter, be it Smith or Zwick, later in the week. I understand he wanted the perception of the controversy behind him but again I think Zwick deserved better because other than Zwick's fumble and Smith's beautiful TD pass to Holmes, I surely saw nothing that pointed to Smith being named the starter so early in the week. I'm not anti-Smith in any way ...I'm glad there is not a two-headed QB rotation...but I just think Zwick deserves better.
ImBack45 (Sep 16, 2005 11:55:41 AM)
Gary, what do you think the odds are now of Lyons brother coming to OSU? I can't image he was too impressed Saturday. If we can't get a guy like Ginn the ball more than three times he has to wonder what's in store for him correct?
GaryHousteau (Sep 16, 2005 11:55:41 AM)
ImBack45...I frequently touch base with the Lyons family, be it by phone or in person at their tailgate and unless Devon is the best salesman in the world, I see the chances of getting Wes slip away each and every week. And for the longest time, I've been calling Lyons an OSU lean. I don't see that being the case now.
mulder (Sep 16, 2005 11:57:44 AM)
Pittman doesn't look like a guy who will stay healthy as an every down back. They must find a second option. What are your thoughts?
GaryHousteau (Sep 16, 2005 11:57:44 AM)
Pittman is exciting at times, an upgrade over Ross from last year for sure, but he doesn't seem to be the most durable player on the roster. Again that just begs the question of how bad a situation is Erik Haw in to not even sniff the field?
ImBack45 (Sep 16, 2005 11:59:32 AM)
Gary, regarding Zwick & Smith, do you think JT may have just named Smith the starter to give him the chance to go out this week and show what he can do versus what JZ did against Miami and then reevaluate and go with the best man starting the Big 10?
GaryHousteau (Sep 16, 2005 11:59:32 AM)
I think the early decision to Smith was made to ellivate all of the QB controversy questions during the week. If it was named on merit alone than I must have missed something on Saturday night. Why not have Smith and Zwick battle hard for the job during the week?
bucks4fun (Sep 16, 2005 12:01:06 PM)
Hi Gary, why don't we see any swing passes to the tb. Seems like the perfect play with the 4 wr set, quick dunk and go
GaryHousteau (Sep 16, 2005 12:01:06 PM)
It's beyond me as well. Again it's a philosophy that I fully don't understand.
mdbuckeye (Sep 16, 2005 12:03:26 PM)
Gary have fun tonight. I wish I could be back home in Ohio to see some decent highschool football on Friday night's.
GaryHousteau (Sep 16, 2005 12:03:26 PM)
Thanks MD...people say I'm crazy and can't believe I do what I do sometimes...but Bucknuts is the best for a reason and Steve has set such a high standard for the rest of us to try and live up to. We hope that you all enjoy and appreciate our effort.
buckicrazy (Sep 16, 2005 12:04:08 PM)
I think JZ has the potential to be a good QB for the bucks but it seems that TS just brings that extra spark to the offense. The players just seem to be behind TS more than JZ. Who ever may start Tressle just needs to stick to that guy.
GaryHousteau (Sep 16, 2005 12:04:08 PM)
I can not argue or disagree with that sentiment.
Guest (Sep 16, 2005 12:05:53 PM)
Gary, any word on how things are going with Gibson? Is Iowa really a player in his recruitment, or is he a Buckeye and we are just waiting on how his grades check out?
GaryHousteau (Sep 16, 2005 12:05:53 PM)
ImBack...the last time I spoke to Gibson in person was a week or so before the season and he gave me the impression it was Iowa or Ohio State. I think his academic situation is a factor but in the end...if things are taken care of...he will be a Buckeye.
rbuck (Sep 16, 2005 12:08:23 PM)
Gary, I couldn't agree more on JZ. I think he did nothing to be pulled after the two series, but then again, I was surprised to see him back in the game to start the second half. I know that if Hamby catches that ball we probably win the game, but I think JT lost this game. If he sticks with one quarterback in the second half, we win the game. Don't get me wrong I still love JT and hope he is the head coach for another 20 years.
GaryHousteau (Sep 16, 2005 12:08:23 PM)
Being that Smith was coming off a suspension, that was his own fault, I thought he should have sat the entire first half if not at least the first quarter. But I concur with your entire statement.
marksgforce (Sep 16, 2005 12:09:45 PM)
Will Kirk schedule HS teams from all over the country for his deal at Crew Stadium each year? Is it set for next year? I talk to our HS coach at Jenks (Tulsa, OK) tonite which is quite a powerhouse. We always have one major out of state game per year. Tonight is Springdale, AR with a top 3 QB and #15 national ranking (we're low this year at #22). Any ideas on how I could help make contact? I think it's a GREAT SHOWCASE FOR HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL!
GaryHousteau (Sep 16, 2005 12:09:45 PM)
Next year I believe it is already St. Edward and Mission Viejo at the Kirk Herbstreit Challenge. I assume Kirk will look for quality matchups every year in his Ohio vs. USA challenge.
marksgforce (Sep 16, 2005 12:11:26 PM)
Any word on Boone's development? Will we see him in a significant role this year? Does he need a year of seasoning? I would prefer the latter on principle, but if he's too good to keep down, hope it's sooner rather than later!
GaryHousteau (Sep 16, 2005 12:11:26 PM)
With Datish at left tackle...I can only assume that both Rehring and Boone are not coming along as fast as they thought. Datish is a valuable player, no question, so it's good that they him to fall back on, but I would guess that neither Boone nor Rehring is where they need to be. I too hope it's soon rather than later with Boone.
GaryHousteau (Sep 16, 2005 12:14:07 PM)
I need to run now guys... sorry for such a short chat...it seems we were just getting on a roll and I have to end it now. Sorry for the calls in que still. I appreciate those of you who took the time to send in questions and follow along with the chat as well as those of you who check it out at a later time. Have a great football weekend. Go Bucks!
