Thanks for dropping by tonight. Please begin firing away questions.
WestonBuckeye (Sep 20, 2005 8:10:38 PM)
Whats going on with Diebler?
starBUCKS (Sep 20, 2005 8:12:55 PM)
Do you think Chris Wells starts by big ten opener next year?
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:13:41 PM)
I think Diebler wants to be a Buckeye, but is getting pressure from his family to honor his commitment to Valpo. I think he will be a Buckeye in the end though.
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:14:13 PM)
I do not think Chris Wells will be starting by the Big Ten opener, but he will be playing a lot. Much like Alex Boone this year.
BuckeyeDave (Sep 20, 2005 8:14:21 PM)
How much do you think Coach Tressel is holding back offensively? I'm hoping that he is not going to open it up until he absolutely has to.
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:15:14 PM)
I think he is holding some plays back for the Big Ten season. And you know he will always have some new plays stored away for the Michigan game. I don't think he will open it up this week, but I think we'll definitely see more creativity and deep passes.
WestonBuckeye (Sep 20, 2005 8:15:24 PM)
Concerning the Glenville pipe line, does it have a leak?
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:16:21 PM)
I don't think so. OSU is not going to get every good recruit from that school, even though it's pretty much been that way for the last four years. If you are referring to Small, I still think he will be a Buckeye in the end. But it's hard to pick OSU over USC if you are a receiver. Jarrett is a good example.
BuckeyeDave (Sep 20, 2005 8:17:20 PM)
I'm hoping that Coach Tressel is trying to bait Coach Paterno into concentrating on the 8 - 12 yd passing game, so that the Buckeyes can uncork the long ball against an unprepared Penn St defense. Your thoughts?
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:18:29 PM)
Or maybe that's what he's doing for the Iowa game. I don't see them holding much back this week, just to take Penn State off guard. Iowa is a bigger game IMO because of what happened last year. PSU will still be a tough game to win, on the road at night, but they will do everything they can to knock off Iowa.
starBUCKS (Sep 20, 2005 8:18:40 PM)
Will Arvell Nelson get a shot at an OSU offer? Pool seems to love him...
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:19:11 PM)
I doubt it, but it's possible. I just don't see them taking two QBs in this class.
BuckeyeDave (Sep 20, 2005 8:19:18 PM)
Do you prefer Pittman or Haw (with a little more PT) as the primary TB?
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:19:58 PM)
I still like Pittman. I know he hasn't been overly impressive so far this year, but I think he will turn it on. But it is nice having Haw back to give him a nice kick in the rear.
starBUCKS (Sep 20, 2005 8:21:59 PM)
Is the Aaron Brown family just playing the recruiting game? Too many 10's given, and positive comments across the board. Where do you think Aaron ends up?
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:22:50 PM)
I think that is what they're doing to an extent. Talking up other schools, even though OSU is their favorite. I still think he ends up a Buckeye.
starBUCKS (Sep 20, 2005 8:26:48 PM)
In order, who do you feel are currently the top 5 teams in the Big 10?
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:27:52 PM)
Ohio State, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Purdue, Wisconsin (tie for 5th)
BuckeyeBK (Sep 20, 2005 8:28:12 PM)
Do you think we surprise anyone with our offense on Saturday? Actually throw deep? Involve Ginn and Holmes? Throw to the RB or a screen?
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:28:51 PM)
I think there will be more deep passes this week (there can't be less, can there?). Look for Holmes and Ginn to be more involved like the latter stages of last season.
buckmark (Sep 20, 2005 8:29:15 PM)
have you seen any of the "second tier" OL (Nagy, Browning, etc.) play yet this year and who do you see as worthy of an offer?
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:29:59 PM)
I have not. But I've heard good thing about both Browning and Nagy from our recruiting gurus. I think there will be one more Ohio O-lineman (in addition to Brown if he signs with OSU) in this class.
BuckeyeDave (Sep 20, 2005 8:30:09 PM)
I saw A Brown play against Shaker Hts and it looked like he doesn't have any "nasty" in him. I'm going to the Princeton game this Friday, what should I watch for?
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:30:42 PM)
That seems to be the one complaint about him. Very athletic, technically sound, but does not have a nasty streak.
BuckeyeBK (Sep 20, 2005 8:30:49 PM)
Fast forward to next year: Is basketball or football the sport that everyone is looking forward to?
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:31:20 PM)
Football will always be king, but it is going to be exciting around here with the best basketball recruiting class in the country.
ohs (Sep 20, 2005 8:32:34 PM)
will we get gibson and brown?
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:32:43 PM)
Yes. I think Gibson for sure, and most likely Brown
ohs (Sep 20, 2005 8:32:48 PM)
is henton going to be a good qb?
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:33:16 PM)
I've only seen his junior highlight film, so it's tough to say for sure. But if the staff was that impressed with him, I'll say yes.
BuckeyeBK (Sep 20, 2005 8:33:33 PM)
Do you foresee any player breaking out during the Big Ten season that has been relatively quiet so far (Haw? Frost?)
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:33:58 PM)
Haw would be my guess. I don't think he'll win the starting job, but he'll be a solid #2 back and will get some of those tough yards.
BuckeyeBK (Sep 20, 2005 8:35:22 PM)
Will Nate Salley's limited coverage skills come back to haunt us in another big game?
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:36:34 PM)
I thought this was the year -- as a senior captain -- Salley would prove he was decent in pass coverage. It's not happening. So, yes, I think that will be a concern as the season progresses. I've also been less than impressed with Salley's tackling. But there is plenty of time to turn it around. He's a future NFL player and has all kinds of ability.
buckmark (Sep 20, 2005 8:36:50 PM)
what's your take on Tress' comfort level with the QB play?
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:38:00 PM)
I asked Troy Smith tonight if he had the freedom to call audibles at the line of scrimmage if he saw something he didn't like. He basically said no (have to dig up the actual quote). That tells me a lot right there. If Tressel doesn't allow him to call audibles, he can't have too much confidence in his ability to read defenses at the line.
BuckeyeBK (Sep 20, 2005 8:38:23 PM)
I've seen Duane's opinion, Bill Greene's, Gary's, even heard Herbie's opinion, but what is your opinion of our offense and its problems? Did we just overhype based on last year, or is a lack of letting the big guns go?
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:39:18 PM)
I think it all boils down to OSU being too predictable. Not even necessarily too conservative, but too predictable. Opposing players always claim after the games they knew what was coming. Tressel needs to do a better job of mixing things up IMO.
BUCSROCK (Sep 20, 2005 8:39:42 PM)
Look back at Smiths games he had one great and I do mean great game the rest of his games were awfull
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:41:01 PM)
I think this is a misconception. He wasn't allowed to do much after OSU took the big lead against Penn State, wasn't allowed to do much against Indiana; played well against Michigan State; didn't play good against Purdue.
27-6 (Sep 20, 2005 8:41:24 PM)
Do you think Troy with another couple games under his belt we will start seeing the offense flowing better. I thought he really started to find his rythem before he got his 500 rythems alla 4-1 start
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:41:50 PM)
No question about it. Last Saturday was his first start since the Michigan game. He will only get better, as will the offense.
BuckeyeBK (Sep 20, 2005 8:42:02 PM)
That brings me to my next point.. please, please tell me that Coach Tressel knows that it is becoming too predictable.. it's all over the net and the radio (although I know he claims he doesn't pay attention to either).
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:42:53 PM)
I think he does know that he's too predicable at times, but he's a bottom line guy. The five national titles tells him he's doing something right. We see there is room for improvement, but he's not going to drastically change the way he does things when he's been so successful.
BUCSROCK (Sep 20, 2005 8:43:22 PM)
Now Zwick was bad to but I just do not see Troy progressing, and if he has more bad games were do go Boeckman back to Zwick.I
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:43:53 PM)
I think it will take an injury to Smith to see Zwick as the starting QB again. And with all that running, an injury to Smith is a very good possibility at some point this season.
BUCSROCK (Sep 20, 2005 8:47:22 PM)
Next year when we get that bruising every down back I think you will see more production from this offense like the start of 2002 before MC got dinged up this yeam was tough offensivelly after Clarrets injuries the offense was not as capable.
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:48:27 PM)
A power running game is the staple of a Tressel offense and he hasn't had a power back in three years. Chris Wells might be exactly what the doctor ordered, but there's been a lot of freshman that were supposed to come in and start right away, and didn't. I think Wells will be a big boost to this offense though.
27-6 (Sep 20, 2005 8:48:51 PM)
I dont undestand how you can bulid a rock solid defence and not build a solid offence. I must say this Vince Young did get up slow a few times.
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:50:15 PM)
I think a lot of OSU fans struggle with this. Why the emphasis on defense and special teams, and not much emphasis on offense? Tressel just has a different viewpoint than a lot of coaches. He wants a mistake-free offense and he thinks that leads to victories. He doesn't mind finishing 80th in the country in total offense.
buckmark (Sep 20, 2005 8:50:31 PM)
what has prevented our QB's from progressing the way you might think two elite 11 fourth year juniors could have. many are saying that one of them should have developed into a star type player by now.
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:51:30 PM)
For Smith, it's simply a lack of game action. This will be, what, his 7th career start? If at the end of this season he is still struggling, then it will be an issue. But I think with (almost) a full season as the starter, he will be fine.
ohs (Sep 20, 2005 8:51:46 PM)
are we going to lose small to USC?
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:52:35 PM)
That is the very strong rumor, but I would guess he still ends up at OSU. Ginn Sr. just needs to talk some sense into him! (but, again, you can't really blame a WR for picking USC's offense over OSU's)
BuckeyeBK (Sep 20, 2005 8:52:55 PM)
Does the defense come out and play 100% better than last year against Iowa?
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:53:53 PM)
The defense will definitely play better. But last year's game was only 10-0 at halftime. Then the Buckeyes fumbled away the ball on the opening drive, gave Iowa the short field and it was over. Yes, the defense played bad last year, but the offense was even worse IMO
ohs (Sep 20, 2005 8:54:26 PM)
did Jon Diebler committ to osu today for hoops or stay with valpo?
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:54:36 PM)
He's still weighing his options.
ohs (Sep 20, 2005 8:54:57 PM)
do you see anything wrong with O'neil or is Jenkins a better DB at this stage?
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:55:41 PM)
They're playing diffferent positions. Jenkins is a corner and O'Neal is a safety. I think Buckeye fans should be excited about both of these young players, especially Jenkins. O'Neal is getting a lot of time on special teams as well and looks good.
BuckeyeBK (Sep 20, 2005 8:55:58 PM)
Is Michigan State for real, or do they have enough defense?
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:56:38 PM)
Typical Michigan State team. Look like world-beaters one week, could be upset at any time. I really like their offense, but, no, I do not think they have enough defense to be a Big Ten title contender.
BUCSROCK (Sep 20, 2005 8:56:54 PM)
This Defense is much better than last years version and Iowa has lost a lot on D and to be honest this Offense is really better than last years at this time
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:57:35 PM)
Agree on all points. The biggest difference in Iowa this year is its defensive line. Last year, the Hawkeyes had an excellent D-line. This year, it's below average at best.
BUCSROCK (Sep 20, 2005 8:58:34 PM)
Tate is the wild card but I remember a QB from Penn ST who looked great against Ohio State in 2001 and played great but once the league saw him the secound time around he was not the phenom everyone thought
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 8:59:16 PM)
Zack Mills. Turns in a solid redshirt freshman season, then never does much for the rest of his career. But Tate is much better than Mills ever was. Mills had a bit of a lucky game in that 2001 game in Happy Valley.
BUCSROCK (Sep 20, 2005 9:02:25 PM)
Mills had a decent remainder of the year and I could be wrong but I think Tate can be contained do you compare Tate to VY hardly in my opinion and Iowa does not help themselves playing Div 2 programs when there first Conf game is against the Bucs
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 9:03:18 PM)
Some of OSU's players compared Tate to Vince Young today, but I'm not buying it. Tate is very good; Young is an All-American. Tate is a good college QB; Young is a future NFL star.
buckguy05 (Sep 20, 2005 9:05:31 PM)
..just got in ..not sure if this has been asked but i'll go ahead. with the way ginn has been playing...what do you think he needs to do to get back to where he left off last year? do you think he's trying too hard to live up to the hype and he just needs to calm his nerves?
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 9:06:37 PM)
I don't think it's nerves. I think it's due to lack of opportunities and being the focal point of every defense that OSU faces. Once teams start to realize that Santonio Holmes is really the most dangerous player on OSU's offense, it will open it up a little more for Ginn.
27-6 (Sep 20, 2005 9:07:04 PM)
I believe not just for revenge but I cant see OSU being flat for this game i think they are going to reveerse the score to osu 33-7 iowa Look at Iowa last two games 42-21 aginst N Iowa
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 9:07:25 PM)
How about 56-7 by halftime like the 1995 game? OK, probably not. I'll go with 27-16 Buckeyes.
BUCSROCK (Sep 20, 2005 9:09:11 PM)
Dave what do you thinkabout Ginn pressing a little to much to make every touch a home run a little to much shake and not enough just letting the game come to him
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 9:09:46 PM)
I don't think he's pressing too much. I just think he's seeing better prepared defense this year. Everyone comes into the game thinking, "We need to stop #7, then go from there."
27-6 (Sep 20, 2005 9:10:51 PM)
I hate saying this so you dont have to put it on the screen but man if MC was a senior now could you imagine the possiblites
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 9:11:47 PM)
If Clarett had the right people in his ear, OSU would have been repeat national champs in 2003 IMO. But he would have been out the door after 2004 no matter what. But yes, I think you're not alone in wondering "What if?" in terms of Clarett. What a tragic ending.
27-6 (Sep 20, 2005 9:14:03 PM)
Did you think we were the better team aginst Texas but a couple of mistakes cost us
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 9:15:12 PM)
Definitely. The better team did not win that game. I just hate thinking that Mack Brown might have outcoached Jim Tressel. But you can't blame Tress for dropped passes, blown defensive assignments, stupid penalties, etc...
27-6 (Sep 20, 2005 9:15:35 PM)
What a dream to play Texas in the Rose Bowl again
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 9:15:52 PM)
Wouldn't that be nice? I don't think it will happen, but it would be nice.
buckguy05 (Sep 20, 2005 9:16:22 PM)
what do you think about the texas osu rematch in the fiesta bowl prediction...? i saw that on CFN ...so i was just curious on the probability on that
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 9:17:32 PM)
I don't think USC will lose a game (due in part to their cupcake schedule) so they will be in. If OSU and Texas each have one loss, I think Texas will be in the Rose Bowl. Maybe OSU jumps them, but the tiebreaker should be a head-to-head matchup.
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 9:19:31 PM)
The good news for OSU is that it is the highest ranked team with one-loss. Win out and there is still a decent chance the Bucks could be playing for the title. But really, an outright Big Ten title would make the season. Hasn't happened since 1984.
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 9:20:11 PM)
Any final questions before we call it a night?
27-6 (Sep 20, 2005 9:20:53 PM)
MI or Wisc Give me a score I think Wisc 24-20
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 9:21:13 PM)
I'll go with 31-27 Michigan
buckguy05 (Sep 20, 2005 9:21:29 PM)
wow...kinda slow tonight...but anyways next question....how about the defensive players in the heisman race? a.j hawk was there didnt see him there after last weekend...but hes gotta be a contender if there are any defensive players on heisman...right?
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 9:21:45 PM)
I don't think Hawk is a realistic Heisman contender. But he will bring home the Butkus.
buckguy05 (Sep 20, 2005 9:22:24 PM)
alright thats it from me...thanks dave
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 9:22:47 PM)
Thanks to everyone for stopping by!
27-6 (Sep 20, 2005 9:23:11 PM)
Do you think in a little more time Jt can build a team like YSU was even thou were at a d1
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 9:23:54 PM)
I think he can. Four national titles might be a stretch, but he's already a fourth of the way home. I've said it before: Jim Tressel will go down as one of the legendary coaches in college football.
DaveBiddle (Sep 20, 2005 9:24:34 PM)
Good night everyone. Thanks for the great questions.
