Hello. Please begin with any questions.
pm (Sep 22, 2005 1:07:47 PM)
Give us your prediction?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:08:00 PM)
I am going with 27-16, OSU
JimC (Sep 22, 2005 1:08:35 PM)
Hi Dave, Does Dexter commit this weekend?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:08:50 PM)
I would guess not, but it would be a nice surprise.
JimC (Sep 22, 2005 1:09:15 PM)
How has practice been going this week? Last week, I heard they were pretty flat.
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:09:47 PM)
Tressel seemed very pleased yesterday. He quote was, "It definitely isn't same old, same old," in terms of the tempo and intensity.
pm (Sep 22, 2005 1:10:13 PM)
Do you think JT and staff took a very long look at the Iowa State game films?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:11:00 PM)
Definitely. It's a good blueprint of what to do against Iowa. Of course, that game completely changed after Tate went out, so you can't just look at that film. Iowa State would have won regardless, but Tate being out changed everything.
JimC (Sep 22, 2005 1:11:50 PM)
I hope we establish more of a power run offense this week. What do you think are the keys to beating Iowa?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:12:25 PM)
The running game will be important, but I think establishing a passing game might be more so. I think Tressel has been holding some plays back and this is the week we'll see Holmes and Ginn more involved, especially Ginn.
Hee Haw (Sep 22, 2005 1:13:40 PM)
Do you think Haw will get more carries this game? Say 5-10? IMO I think that would be great. Schnttker is only a short yardage back, Pittman is a scat back and Haw is that in between guy I think that is the missing link in the offense this year.
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:14:36 PM)
Yes, I think we can expect around five carries from Haw this week. I think he's close to winning that #2 RB job. And his style is more suited for a defense like Iowa's. I've been impressed with Mo Wells, but the Bucks need a power tailback and Haw might be it.
mulder (Sep 22, 2005 1:14:45 PM)
Do you see any changes in the pattern of rotation for the OL this week?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:15:13 PM)
I think we'll continue to see more of Boone and less of Datish. I think eventually Rehring will be playing more, but I'm not sure if it will be this week.
Hee Haw (Sep 22, 2005 1:15:34 PM)
What happenned to the slant or fade pass plays we used to give to our WR where if they didn't break it for a long one they would be a shoe string away?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:16:06 PM)
Troy puts good touch on the fade routes (Holmes TD against Texas) and I think we'll see more of those plays in big games like Iowa.
JimC (Sep 22, 2005 1:16:14 PM)
There seems to be a lot of negative karma on the boards this week. Why is everyone so down on Tressel and the Bucks? Are people just venting?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:17:08 PM)
People are just so frustrated with the offense and the SDSU game got a lot of people's blood boiling. But Tressel doesn't care if he finishes 80th in the country in offense -- he's not going to show any of his "good stuff" against lesser opponents. That's just the way he is.
pm (Sep 22, 2005 1:17:18 PM)
Were you surprised to see Louisville jump tOSU in the polls? Are they that good?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:17:56 PM)
I am very impressed with their offense, but I don't think they would want any piece of Ohio State. Maybe the Buckeyes and Cardinals will meet if OSU goes 10-1 and barely misses out on the Rose Bowl.
Hee Haw (Sep 22, 2005 1:18:10 PM)
I didn't get the chance to watch Boone in the SDSU game. Is he turning it on now? Is he a candidate to take over the LT job? Datish is a great back-up...but a starter?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:18:36 PM)
I think all signs point to Boone being the starting LT at some point this season. Maybe there will be a surprise for us this Saturday in fact.
Hee Haw (Sep 22, 2005 1:18:54 PM)
Do you think that the last two seasons and this season are proving that Tressel NEEDS a big power back like J.Wells and MoC to make his offense truly work?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:19:25 PM)
Yes, I think you can make that argument, no question. Tressel can win without one, but his offense needs a power TB to really play well.
mulder (Sep 22, 2005 1:19:33 PM)
Who do you like in Minny and Purdue, a very interesting and significant early season game?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:19:55 PM)
I like the Gophers at home. I think they will be able to run on a good Purdue defense.
Hee Haw (Sep 22, 2005 1:20:59 PM)
Anything on Frost...Hurt, doghouse...grades? He is like Louis Holmes but on schollie.
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:21:27 PM)
I think he's still in the doghouse.
mulder (Sep 22, 2005 1:22:05 PM)
What is your impression of Laurinitis? Is he the real deal?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:22:46 PM)
Yes, I really like what I've seen in limited action, including special teams. And the coaches rave about him. He will play a bigger role than expected the rest of the season with the Freeman situation.
BuckeyeDave (Sep 22, 2005 1:23:28 PM)
How do you see the running plays distributed this Saturday? How many to Pittman? To Wells? To Schnittker? To Haw?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:23:59 PM)
I think they will continue to ride Pittman, so I'll say about 20 for Pittman, 5 for Haw and 2-3 for Wells.
mulder (Sep 22, 2005 1:24:09 PM)
Is there any chance that we will see some of Boeckman in the next few games?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:24:45 PM)
I really doubt it. I think it would take a comfortable lead and I don't see that happening against Iowa or PSU. (But you might see him against IU!)
Hee Haw (Sep 22, 2005 1:25:00 PM)
Any ideas as to when Cordle, Nicol and D'Animal will be back? Any chance that Cordle will redshirt this year due to the injury?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:25:59 PM)
The staff was so impressed with Cordle in the spring, but yes, I think they are reaching the point where they will have to redshirt him. It only makes sense, unless there is an injury to Mangold or something of that nature. Nicol and D'Andrea should both be back for the Penn State game in two weeks after the bye week.
osubuck1 (Sep 22, 2005 1:26:08 PM)
I really think we need a FB in this years class, any thoughts?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:27:14 PM)
I think Welch is in the doghouse for whatever reason. Not sure about Patterson, but it might just be because he is behind some very good safeties.
BuckeyeDave (Sep 22, 2005 1:27:31 PM)
If Pittman, Haw and Wells share about 28 running plays, how many does Smith take?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:28:15 PM)
I think they will tone it down this week, since you know Iowa will be ready for the QB draws. So, I will say there will "only" be about 5-7 called running plays for Smith.
osubuck1 (Sep 22, 2005 1:28:26 PM)
AJ Wallace, do we have a legit shot at him?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:28:44 PM)
I think so. The one time I talked to him it sounded positive.
Hee Haw (Sep 22, 2005 1:29:04 PM)
I was expecting to see Jamario on more than just special teams, whats happenning with him?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:29:55 PM)
I think he's coming along just fine. He's not going to play that much safety with guys like Salley and Whitner in front of him. And with Malcolm Jenkins emerging, we're seeing more and more of Tyler Everett playing safety as well. O'Neal is a player. He'll be fine.
BuckeyeDave (Sep 22, 2005 1:31:02 PM)
Any news on Freddie Lenix?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:31:20 PM)
I've heard rumors that he still might not be able to get through OSU's admissions. Let
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:31:32 PM)
Let's hope those are just rumors and nothing more.
Hee Haw (Sep 22, 2005 1:31:56 PM)
Do you see Jenkins taking the starting job at corner by teh end of the year? I think that would be great until the BIG matchup with TSUN happens.
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:32:37 PM)
Yes, I think he already has taken over as a starting corner. I know it was just because the Bucks opened in a nickel defense last week, but I think Jenkins is now entrenched as a starter.
osubuck1 (Sep 22, 2005 1:34:33 PM)
Still a lot of big boys still left in Ohio, who do you think we lose out on?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:35:13 PM)
This is optimistic, but I think OSU will land most of the in-state recruits that it wants that are still out there. Aaron Brown and Ray Small are the two that could get away, but I think they will be Buckeyes in the end.
pm (Sep 22, 2005 1:35:36 PM)
Is there a reason why D'Andrea would be back this year? He would still have two years left and extra time to rehab the knee?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:36:11 PM)
He would only have one year left regardless. And I think he'll be a nice boost for an already outstanding defense, especially with Freeman out.
Hee Haw (Sep 22, 2005 1:36:27 PM)
I have been to all the games and haven't watched any on TV...which O-Lineman is the one giving up the sacks or is it great coverage on most.
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:37:11 PM)
I don't think there is one guy that is getting abused in pass pro. Datish is still not playing well IMO, but the coaches obviously see something in him that they like. But again, I think it's a matter of time before Boone wins that job. Maybe this week?
Pastor Jack (Sep 22, 2005 1:38:25 PM)
Regarding Troy Smith: Do you think we need to enroll him in a "RIF" program (Reading Is Fundamental). He seems not to read defenses/coverages past the first progression. Do you think this will change (quickly) or should we get used to seeing him take the snap, and taking off??
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:39:28 PM)
That is the complaint about Smith and will probably always be. He's got a strong arm and can be accurate at times, but he locks in on one receiver and then takes off if he's covered. I think Smith will improve and might be solid in this area by his senior year, but I think he will continue struggling in terms of reading defenses for at least the rest of this season.
JimC (Sep 22, 2005 1:39:49 PM)
How do you see the rest of the 2005 class filling out? Any guys of the radar getting close to getting an offer?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:40:31 PM)
I look for them to get most of the in-state players they are still targeting, along with a couple out of state studs. And there will always be 3-4 players no one is thinking about, and I won't even try and speculate on who those will be.
Folanator (Sep 22, 2005 1:40:44 PM)
Dave how much is this touch with Troy? He just seems to be throwing it hard every time.
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:41:45 PM)
Well, on the fade routes, he puts excellent touch on the ball. But he hasn't figured out how to do that yet with some of the intermediate routes. Remember the pass to Holmes in last year's Michigan game against Marlin Jackson? We know Smith can put touch on the ball, he just doesn't do it often enough.
osufan26 (Sep 22, 2005 1:42:16 PM)
Are there any out of state guys who we haven't heard about yet that may visit osu?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:42:56 PM)
Colin McCarthy (LB from Florida) will be here this weekend and will also be at Penn State for the OSU game on Oct. 8. I'm not sure which other OOS recruits will be in Columbus this weekend.
osubuck1 (Sep 22, 2005 1:43:32 PM)
who do you expect to get an offer soon?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:44:02 PM)
I don't know if I expect it, but Bryant Browning is a possibility. Cumberland also has an offer waiting if he gets the grades/test scores up.
Hee Haw (Sep 22, 2005 1:47:55 PM)
If you had to guess, who will be OSU's MVP for the Iowa game?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:48:10 PM)
Troy Smith. I think this will be his breakout game.
pm (Sep 22, 2005 1:48:30 PM)
One of these two twams will have two losses after 4 games, are you surprised at this scenario?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:48:58 PM)
A little bit, because I didn't expect Iowa to lose to Iowa State. But at the same time, I thought Iowa was overrated coming into the season.
osubuck1 (Sep 22, 2005 1:49:12 PM)
who do you like in the Iowa game, when is our offense going to come together like it did late in 04?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:49:59 PM)
I like OSU, 27-16. The offense will continue to be a work in progress, but I think Smith starts to get it going this week. We won't see the offense peak until late in the year -- that is a Tressel staple.
Pastor Jack (Sep 22, 2005 1:50:06 PM)
Why do you think this will be TS's breakout game?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:50:42 PM)
He now has two games under his belt this season and I just think this is the week he puts it together. I also think OSU has saved some plays for this game, which will help Smith.
Hee Haw (Sep 22, 2005 1:50:47 PM)
By breakout game...a "Tate"-like game from last year?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:51:24 PM)
No, just his breakout game for this season. Not what he did against Michigan last year, but a solid game from start to finish. I think he will have a couple big pass plays and will manage the game and come away with a W.
BuckeyeDave (Sep 22, 2005 1:51:32 PM)
Wisc vs. mich. Your prediction?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:52:24 PM)
I like Michigan in a close one, but that will be a tough game. Looking forward to seeing that one. It could go either way with Henne. Was his big freshman year due in large part to Braylon Edwards? I think so. But there is no question Henne has a big arm.
Hee Haw (Sep 22, 2005 1:52:32 PM)
After D;Andrea comes back do you see using all 4 LB's with Carpenter playing a DE position a lot?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:53:17 PM)
I think they will ease him in, so I don't envision too much of the 3-4. But D'Andrea will definitely be a nice boost on defense and special teams, if he's truly healthy.
osubuck1 (Sep 22, 2005 1:53:26 PM)
USC, Texas, do either lose this year?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:54:25 PM)
I think USC will run the table, but wouldn't it be nice if they didn't. I'm betting Texas will lose one game, which will make it interesting if OSU goes 10-1. Who gets the other Rose Bowl bid? Do you go with head-to-head, or with the team that was better at the end of the year?
osubuck1 (Sep 22, 2005 1:54:45 PM)
Louisville, how do you feel about them passing us in the polls, pretty ridiculous if you ask me. They almost lost to KENTUCKY. Look at their schedule, its so easy, any chance they play for a NC?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:55:26 PM)
I like Louisville's offense, but I think OSU would win by 10 or more points if they played. I think it's a longshot that the Cardinals will play for the nat'l title, although their schedule will surely help.
osubuck1 (Sep 22, 2005 1:56:28 PM)
Do you find Missy Elliot attractIve?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:56:41 PM)
I do not, but I do like some of her music!
Hee Haw (Sep 22, 2005 1:58:05 PM)
I heard that Michigan has some injuries on there O-Line do you know of any of these? Could they still have them when we play them?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 1:59:25 PM)
Jake Long started as a reshirt freshman last year at tackle and was expected to be their second-best OL this year. He is still out with an ankle, but he will probably be back for OSU. They also just lost their starting safety Mundy for the season, maybe for his career. Mike Hart is also hobbled by a hamstring. Definitely a lot of injuries in Ann Arbor this year.
Guest (Sep 22, 2005 1:59:49 PM)
Sorry, I am late... Dave have you touched on Erik Haw at all?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 2:00:36 PM)
I think he will get about five carries this week, but will continue to be used more and more as the season progresses. I wouldn't be surprised to see him carry it 10 times this week, but I think they will continue riding Pittman for the time being.
osubuck1 (Sep 22, 2005 2:00:45 PM)
Any K/P on the radar in the next couple yeras?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 2:01:22 PM)
Not that I know of. But JT has proven he will go to South Africa to find them! OK, so Pretorius was already in the U.S. but it sounded better the other way.
osubuck1 (Sep 22, 2005 2:01:30 PM)
Does a Grey shirt count as a redshirt, or can a player also redshirt once enrolled?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 2:02:02 PM)
A grayshirt does not count as a redshirt. Todd Boeckman grayshirted, then redshirted and is now a third year freshman.
osubuck1 (Sep 22, 2005 2:03:04 PM)
Alex Boone, does he start next year?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 2:03:20 PM)
I think he will be starting at some point this season.
Pastor Jack (Sep 22, 2005 2:03:33 PM)
Might Todd Boeckman be the best of QB's??
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 2:04:02 PM)
Possibly. But I would probably go with Schoenhoft if I had to guess. Smith for now, Schoenhoft for the future.
Pastor Jack (Sep 22, 2005 2:05:23 PM)
What ever happened to that Basketball recruit that was supposed to announce his choice this past Tuesday? It was on your site, but then no information on the announcement???
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 2:06:07 PM)
Jon Diebler was expected to announce he was committing to OSU, but is getting pressure to honor his committment to Valpo. It looks like it will still be OSU, but he is thinking it over.
Pastor Jack (Sep 22, 2005 2:07:52 PM)
How is Hambone doing??
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 2:08:26 PM)
Ryan Hamby? I think he's still a little down to be honest with you. He needs a big play to break him out of it. Getting a couple more drops last week didn't help.
osubuck1 (Sep 22, 2005 2:09:20 PM)
Who is the best buckeye player of all time?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 2:09:29 PM)
I think that has to be Archie.
Pastor Jack (Sep 22, 2005 2:09:50 PM)
How short of a leash will JT give TS? If things do not go well, will we see JZ, or has the die been cast??
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 2:10:25 PM)
I think it's Smith's job for the rest of the year, barring injury. Now, if he has a couple terrible games back to back, maybe that will change. But I don't see that happening.
osubuck1 (Sep 22, 2005 2:10:35 PM)
even though he didnt make it as a pro?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 2:11:07 PM)
Well, are we talking about the best Ohio State football player of all time, or the best pro to come out of OSU? If we're talking about the best OSU football player, I think it's Archie.
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 2:12:03 PM)
If you're looking at both pro and college careers, I think guys like Chris Spielman and Jim Parker need to be on the short list. They were excellent on both levels.
osubuck1 (Sep 22, 2005 2:12:29 PM)
Did Brandon Smith play TE in HS?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 2:12:38 PM)
He played a little bit, but not much.
Pastor Jack (Sep 22, 2005 2:12:47 PM)
what is the Over/Under on the number of 'touches' Teddy gets Saturday?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 2:13:00 PM)
Including special teams, I am going with 12.
osubuck1 (Sep 22, 2005 2:13:17 PM)
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 2:13:44 PM)
If he played his final year at OSU I would put him up there. But not as it stands. As just a pro player, he might have been the best.
osubuck1 (Sep 22, 2005 2:13:58 PM)
Will Ginn ever play defense?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 2:14:41 PM)
I think so. Malcolm Jenkins playing so well doesn't make it a necessity right now, but I think we will see Ginn at corner late in the season.
robobuck (Sep 22, 2005 2:14:54 PM)
Hello Dave, Do youi think we will see Carpenter at DE like the SDSU game or will we go with a more standard 4-3 package since Iowa plans to try to run more?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 2:15:33 PM)
I think they will mix it up. Carp brings so much versatility to the table and I think they plan on using it. Look for him to basically split his time at OLB and DE.
osubuck1 (Sep 22, 2005 2:15:42 PM)
better to watch on espn late at night, football reruns or poker?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 2:15:59 PM)
I'll go with football reruns. I like a good game of poker, but don't care to watch it on TV.
osubuck1 (Sep 22, 2005 2:16:51 PM)
Do you think anyone we have recruited so far, besides wells will see playing time next year?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 2:17:10 PM)
Maybe Connor Smith, but I think it will take time for him to learn pass pro. Colerain runs that triple-option.
osubuck1 (Sep 22, 2005 2:17:39 PM)
Moeller S or LB?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 2:18:04 PM)
Could go either way, but I think he'll be an OLB. He seems to have a frame where he could add 15-20 pounds and not lose his speed and quickness.
osubuck1 (Sep 22, 2005 2:18:30 PM)
Lot of debate about us not offering Sutton, better player Mo Wells, or sutton?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 2:18:53 PM)
Ouch. Hate to say it, but Sutton. I was impressed with him at the North-South game and have been impressed ever since.
osubuck1 (Sep 22, 2005 2:19:41 PM)
what do you think our b-ball record will be?
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 2:20:03 PM)
I expect big things. I think OSU will be about 25-7 heading into the tournament.
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 2:20:45 PM)
Guys, gotta run pretty soon. Any final questions before we wrap it up?
osubuck1 (Sep 22, 2005 2:21:21 PM)
nope, have a good one...
robobuck (Sep 22, 2005 2:21:22 PM)
Pastor Jack (Sep 22, 2005 2:21:37 PM)
DaveBiddle (Sep 22, 2005 2:21:41 PM)
