Housteau Chat Archive - 9/23

Gary Housteau stopped by club chat today for a few minutes to chat about the latest surrounding Buckeye football and recruiting. A transcript is posted below.

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 1:08:08 PM)
Good afternoon to all of you Bucknuts. I'm ready to rock and roll now if you have any questions about our Buckeyes or anything pertaining to recruiting in general, Ohio in particular. My game tonight looks like it's going to be Tallmadge at Copley. I think Tallmadge could win DII when it's all said and done and Copley has Delone Carter, who I think is pretty fantastic. Should be a very good Suburban League contest tonight. Glenville at Harding tomorrow night after the Buckeyes and Iowa in the afternoon.

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 1:09:05 PM)
I'm going with Tallmadge and Glenville in the win column in case you were wondering.

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 1:09:41 PM)
Forget about Ray Small and Rob Rose going to USC.

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 1:11:00 PM)
I've officially named Chris Wells earlier in the week as the best high school running back that I've ever had the privilege of watching or covering in my nearly 20 years of covering high school football.

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 1:11:48 PM)
Can anyone read me because I don't know if I can keep this unilateral chat session going for a whole hour or so in this manner? Smile!

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 1:13:02 PM)
The Bucks continue to struggle on offense but the Buckeyes get the 'W' tomorrow against the Hawkeyes.

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 1:14:09 PM)
Rudy Kirbus of St. Ignatius seems to be having a really good year, but that's not really a surprise. How about it Catfan?

JimC (Sep 23, 2005 1:16:39 PM)
Hi Gary, Will we get any commits this weekend? I'd like to get Dexter L.

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 1:16:39 PM)
Hi JimC, thanks for firing off the first question this week. I meet the big fellow back at OSU's combine this past summer and I really liked him then. I love wrestlers like Tim Anderson and Luke Fickell down in the trenches. I would not expect to get a commitment from Larimore this weekend but I do expect him to come away very, very impressed with OSU. I don't see any one really committing this weekend because of this game. Everything is still very much in a holding pattern.

primetimebuckeye (Sep 23, 2005 1:18:58 PM)
hello gary this is my first chat

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 1:18:58 PM)
Hi primetime...no sweat...we were all virgins at one time as well! Smile!

ToledoBucknutty (Sep 23, 2005 1:20:48 PM)
I don't know about you, but I don't see Hodge teeing off against us like last year without all of those massive guys in front of him eating our O-Line for breakfast!

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 1:20:48 PM)
Hi ToledoBucknutty, I agree but he's certainly a playmaker so maybe he'll be making them 10 yards down the field. For once in a very long while, I'm fairly happy with both the Buckeyes' and the Browns' offensive lines. Maybe this will be the week the Boone takes hold of the left tackle spot and doesn't let go.

jdeeds (Sep 23, 2005 1:23:10 PM)
Hi Gary, have you heard anything about the performance of Iowa's defensive line so far ... is it going to be the weakness talked about so much in the preseason.

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 1:23:10 PM)
Hi jdeeds, it certainly won't be anywhere near the caliber of Roth and the boys from last year so that's a really good thing. But the program is firmly established and this will still be a very aggressive bunch even though as a unit they have to be considered the weak link of their defense. I think, hope, JT will naturally attempt to exploit what should be an OSU advantage in the trenches.

buckeye59 (Sep 23, 2005 1:25:10 PM)
Hi Gary, I know that everyone is downplaying the beating we took last year in Iowa city per Coach T, but don't you get the feeling that the bucks are ready to get this game on?

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 1:25:10 PM)
Hi buckeye59, I don't doubt the intentions are in all the right places with this Buckeye team but I just don't have a tremendous amount of confidence in all things offensively with OSU. I hate to sound like a broken record so I'll just leave it at that. I'm sure the defense will kick butt and take names but I wish I could feel the same way about the offense.

ToledoBucknutty (Sep 23, 2005 1:29:09 PM)
Good afternoon by the way! And thank God for the Buckeyes!! Gary, what do you think is the mentality overall of this team now? Do you think they are still feeling down, or are they more motivated than ever to prove they can be as great as we/they hoped?

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 1:29:09 PM)
Toledo, now that the Big Ten season is upon us, I hope they're motivated to tear the Hawkeyes a new, er, you know what. This is a veteran group of guys for the most part and it's now or never this week. The revenge factor shouldn't be the primary motivator however. The defense deserves a better performance by the offense. More consistent and more prolific. They deserve that!

Guest (Sep 23, 2005 1:31:04 PM)
do we have any more big time recruits lined up for visits like hornsby

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 1:31:04 PM)
Primetimebuckeye asks about recruits lined up...I think Ausburry and Johnson are pretty big recruits if they indeed make it in tomorrow. I haven't went over the final list of who is all coming an who isn't yet.

JimC (Sep 23, 2005 1:31:54 PM)
Will Cordle get a redshirt this year?

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 1:31:54 PM)
I'm starting to hope that he does JimC. Unless, God forbid, an injury of some sort to Nick Mangold.

Guest (Sep 23, 2005 1:35:17 PM)
will jaqmario oneal be playing more or has he slipped on the depth chary?

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 1:35:17 PM)
Primetime asked about Jamario as well before he left the chat. O'Neal will be fine. I think Everett is likely to hold on to the nickel back position with the emergence of Jenkins at the corner. What a nice luxury to have a big, strong, fast corner with long arms locked into one cornerback position for the next three or four years. O'Neal needs to be patient and his time at safety will come.

redondo (Sep 23, 2005 1:39:05 PM)
Hi Gary - On the radio out here in L.A. this week, the an Iowa analyst said that every year since Ferentz has been at Iowa, the Hawkeys have opened the Big Ten season on the road. He said that Iowa is miffed by this. Does it really matter that much whether you open at home or on the road in the Big 10? Don't all teams get the same number of home & road games? Thank you.

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 1:39:05 PM)
Cry me a river! The schedule is what it is redondo. Obviously it helps playing at home any time of the year. I really don't have any legitimate answer to that.

ToledoBucknutty (Sep 23, 2005 1:43:49 PM)
Personal opinion.....Do we run the Big 10 table?

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 1:43:49 PM)
When you play 'Not to lose' in big BigTen games it's hard to feel confident that OSU can run the table, especially with Penn State at night and Michigan on the road. But since I have nothing but the greatest of respect for A.J. Hawk, Bobby Carpenter and just abou the entire defense, I have to say that it is certainly something that Ohio State should be capable of doing...one way or another.

redondo (Sep 23, 2005 1:49:13 PM)
Hi Gary - How frustrated do you think Coach Treseel was by last week's offensive performance? Do you think this past week is the last week the "party line" can be "Troy is shaking off the rust"?

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 1:49:13 PM)
I'm not a party line guy when it comes to this topic and I continue to believe that Justin Zwick is the better choice for this offense. I continue to equate Troy Smith to Glenville's current quarterback, Arvell Nelson, in the fact that both guys can throw beautiful balls and look very impressive at times, but other times they look completely...well you can figure it out. Nelson is not the athlete that Smith is, by the way, and he can't run but that's another topic for another time. My point is, I'm not sure why JT is willing to so easily accept the numerous bad plays that Smith clearly has a penchant for making since he took over the reins. Sure he deserves all the accolades possible for the Michigan game last year...but one game does not and should not give you a free pass. I hope I didn't get too far off on a tangent on that answer.

ToledoBucknutty (Sep 23, 2005 1:54:01 PM)
Everyone keeps saying that we are holding back our offense and will show more starting this week. If that was true for SDSU, then it was also true in the Texas game. Pardon my French, but what in the *%&# was the coaching staff thinking? How could we seriously throw, I believe, no more than two vertical passes the whole game with those guys out there? I guess my question is....Do you think that our lack of offensive production is as much related to ultra-conservative play calling as it is to poor execution? Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Tressel fan, but boy is it frustrating sometimes!!!

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 1:54:01 PM)
Breathe deeply Toledo. It's Tresselball. There's no other explanation. You win with defense, special teams and you control every other aspect of the game as is humanly possible. On offense it's all about field position and controlling the clock. These priorities will never change. I've never waivered since I wrote my first article on JT when he was hired. It's not pretty but it's effective. I won't be surprised if JT throws deep on the very first play of the game and then never goes back to it the rest of the time. These unexplained things happen over the course of the season on offense.

JimC (Sep 23, 2005 1:57:32 PM)
Is the I-Formation gone? It would be nice to grind out some yards and first downs on the ground.

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 1:57:33 PM)
It sure might be now JimC but I sure hope it's back next year, and I'm sure it will, when C. Wells is dotting the 'I' for the Buckeyes. It's going to be like YSU football in the '90s all over again once Wells comes on board. Smashmouth football will return in a big way. You think Clarett was something? Wait till you see this kid. And he has wonderful parents and a great family as well. I'm really excited about Chris Wells incase you can't tell! Smile!

Diebler (Sep 23, 2005 2:01:18 PM)
Gary, whats up with Devon Lyons? I thought he was gonna get some time this year after he had that monster performance in a scrimmage.

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 2:01:18 PM)
Diebler? Any relation to the basketball Diebler who I would love to see in a Buckeye uniform. Can you break any scoop here for us? That aside...Things aren't looking good for Lyons and at this point I would hope the injury he had last week could get him a medical redshirt for this year. I don't know the status of the injury exactly, but he had the foot problem in the preseason and now is it an ankle problem...let's get the doctor working on that and give him a redshirt. He told me he was all right last week. Maybe I'll ask his brother or his dad if I see either of them this week.

Diebler (Sep 23, 2005 2:05:53 PM)
Gary, we all know during Tressels tenure we have struggled blowing out inferior teams. Was this the same at Youngstown State?

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 2:05:53 PM)
Not at all other than his 3-8 in '95 which came off of back-to-back national championships, Tressel ball was very solid week after week. Very rarely, if ever, did JT's teams have problems beating the teams handily that they should have beaten.

buckeye59 (Sep 23, 2005 2:06:31 PM)
Per Kyle Lamb and the Daily Chief Union, Jon Diebler is OSU bound.

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 2:06:32 PM)
Great news buckeye59! Hurray!

redondo (Sep 23, 2005 2:07:58 PM)
Hi Gary - Seriously, how hard is it to find a defensive weakness with the receivers this offense has? Not everyone can be double-covered, can they? Are the defenses doing that great a job of disguising coverages? Thank you.

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 2:07:58 PM)
I can not explain anything about the offense. I just hope every week that Ohio State has enough points on the board to support their superior defense. I think that's what JT hopes for too!

Diebler (Sep 23, 2005 2:10:17 PM)
LOl, no relation Gary. Check the front page, Diebler is a buck! And I am pumped

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 2:10:17 PM)
Appreciate your response on that. Ohio State needs Dallas Lauderdale to commit next and everything will be fine in Matta land. Check that...Raymar Morgan then Lauderdale.

buckeye59 (Sep 23, 2005 2:11:40 PM)
Speaking of Lyons, when you talk to little bro, how do you feel we stand?

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 2:11:40 PM)
Put it this way, at one time I was firmly in the corner that little Wes would be a Buckeye when it was all said and done but I do not feel nearly as strongly about that as I once did.

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 2:12:28 PM)
Is there anything else on your mind? If not I will call it a wrap for today?

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 2:16:04 PM)
Have a great weekend everybody. I think that Benedictine and Watterson game should be a good one as will Hudson and Solon and my game as well Tallmadge at Copley. I was going to drive out to Coldwater to see Homan against St. Henry but the weather put a damper on those plans. I'll just stay in NE Ohio and then drive down to Columbus tonight. See you all at the Buckeye game! Have a great weekend and God bless the people in Texas and Louisianna again with Hurrican Rita. How lucky we here in Ohio truly are.

buckeye59 (Sep 23, 2005 2:16:47 PM)
Thanks Gary

GaryHousteau (Sep 23, 2005 2:16:47 PM)
