All right. Everyone can begin firing the questions away
MJ (Sep 28, 2005 9:10:37 PM)
Where does Diebler rank in his recruiting class?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:10:54 PM)
That really all depends. It varies from one person to another because of the summer he had....
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:11:35 PM)
Most typically, he's considered a 50 to 75 type player although I know some have him lower than that. I would consider him in that range with a high ceiling to be a possible star down the road.
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:12:05 PM)
The bottom line is that wherever you rank him, he will be a solid player for Ohio State with the chance to be a double-digit scorer or better
Juiced (Sep 28, 2005 9:12:08 PM)
whats the latest on Lauderdale, koufos and the 07 scholarship situation?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:13:10 PM)
It looks like the 2007 class will be a four person class. At least that's the working plan. Koufos will probably be a spring or summer decision, and I would be surprised if that changes. Lauderdale is looking real good for the Buckeyes, and I think his recruitment could end anywhere between now and the spring time.
Canton (Sep 28, 2005 9:13:16 PM)
Kyle, any word on where we stand with Juice Williams?F-ball recruit
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:14:20 PM)
Isiah Williams is still a verbal commitment to Illinois last I knew, but he has expressed a lot of interest in visiting Ohio State officially sometime between now and December. I look for him to honor his commitment and stay with Zook, but we'll see how it goes. He does like Ohio State a lot, but I don't think it will be enough
Delphos (Sep 28, 2005 9:14:28 PM)
Any thoughts on who might get the Cincy job?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:15:42 PM)
There's a lot of credible smoke that Skip Prosser is the top candidate for that job. I think he is actually pretty interested in the job. The problem will be money for UC. Not only did they have to buy out Huggins, but they will have to buy out a large contract from Wake Forest and then pay him top salary. If they can figure that all out, he's their first choice...
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:16:18 PM)
Other candidates I hear are Mick Cronin, Pete Gillen, Steve Lavin, and Herb Sendek. Expect many other names to pop up between now and April
sylvesterequalsclutch (Sep 28, 2005 9:16:22 PM)
What is your outlook on how Ohio St. will do in the 05-06 season?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:17:46 PM)
A couple of weeks ago in my last Schott in the Arm column, I broke down the season into projected wins and losses and I arrived at a 21-6 result. I think the 20/21 win barrier is the threshold I most commonly arrive at when looking at this team. I think you're looking at some issues with rebounding, and they need Jamar Butler to take a hold of the PG position. But they will be in the upper half of the Big 10 and should return to the NCAA tournament for the first time in four years.

how do u rank the leaders for e gordon from illinois, duke, and osu?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:18:46 PM)
Right now Ohio State really isn't much more than a glint in Gordon's eye. They got involved again in August, but the depth chart is working against them. Illinois is the leader and the program that makes the most sense for what he wants, but Duke, Arizona, and Missouri are three teams I think need watched for him.
Canton (Sep 28, 2005 9:18:59 PM)
Kyle-Do we have any chance with Eric Gordon?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:19:19 PM)
As a follow-up to that last question, I really don't see him picking Ohio State.
bw1954 (Sep 28, 2005 9:19:28 PM)
I believe we need another wing or guard for 07 ! Whats your thoughts ? I f you agree Gordon or Jackson would be my targets since apparently Mayo is a longshot .
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:20:56 PM)
As strictly a numbers game, I think one more wing would really help. But there will already be five players in the backcourt for 2007 even before Kosta Koufos could be counted in if he plays a little at the three. Koufos should have enough offensive skill to play on the wing, but the question is whether or not he will be good enough defensively to guard quicker Big 10 wings. I would say another guard is likely for this class, but whether you consider Koufos a wing or not makes an impact.
Delphos (Sep 28, 2005 9:21:02 PM)
Does Coach Matta want to go national in recruiting or does he think he can do it all regionally?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:22:05 PM)
I think the proof is in the pudding when you look at signing Brayden Bell, heavily recruiting Solomon Alabi and Kevin Love and also Rakim Sanders. He wants the best players for Ohio State that fit his program, regardless of where they are from. If players within the state and region are the best targets available and easiest to recruit, that's what he will do. But he won't stop there.
uaghetto (Sep 28, 2005 9:22:14 PM)
Hey Kyle... I apologize if this has already been asked, but does the Othello Hunter commitment pretty much close the book on Raymar Morgan as a potential member of this class? I'm hoping they are unrelated, but I have a feeling they may not be. Thanks!
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:23:43 PM)
My feeling is yes and no on that. Directly, it does not close the book because Ohio State wanted these two anyways, and they are willing to take six guys. In fact, I almost expect six. But indirectly, I think the verbal at this juncture might signal Morgan could possibly be a lost cause. I wouldn't yet rule Morgan totally out, but I think it could be a strong indicator.
Delphos (Sep 28, 2005 9:23:53 PM)
Are next year's guys all locks to be eligible?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:24:31 PM)
Lighty, Conley and Oden are definitly in with no problems. I'm hearing Cook does have probably a little work to do to make sure he's eligible. I feel Cook will make it from what I know of the situation, but I don't think he's a lock.
Juiced (Sep 28, 2005 9:24:40 PM)
who are the major players for kosta? morgan to msu look like a done deal?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:25:23 PM)
Maryland is the biggest player for Kosta. Michigan is strong for him with Illinois, Akron and perhaps Xavier as smaller factors. Morgan to Michigan State is definitely likely, just not yet definite.
Canton (Sep 28, 2005 9:25:27 PM)
Kyle-Any word on Robbie Hummel (07 recruit)?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:26:22 PM)
Near as I can tell, it seems Ohio State has backed off Hummel with Diebler in the fold. Hummel is a lot like Diebler in many ways, so it seems Hummel probably won't be a part of the fold. He looks like a battle between Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, and Notre Dame.
bw1954 (Sep 28, 2005 9:26:29 PM)
Did TM visit KL last week as reported ? Any news ?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:27:44 PM)
I was told that they did in fact go out to see him play. I'm told by several sources that Ohio State is a real factor with Love along with North Carolina, Arizona, and UCLA. Duke is still lingering, and if the stars align, you never know if Oregon could slip back in the picture down the line. But for now, it seems like they are out unless something drastic happens.
Delphos (Sep 28, 2005 9:27:56 PM)
I know this is not CIncy chat, but I keep thinking about what you said about Prosser. Why would he leave Wake for that job?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:28:42 PM)
They still have a home in Cincinnati, and have many friends there. He did turn his hometown of Pittsburgh down, but his wife likes the Cincinnati area and reportedly she would love for him to stay close. I think he would give it some real thought.

Kyle, will oden cook and conley all sign in Nov?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:30:34 PM)
I believe Cook and Lighty will sign at the very least, and I still lean towards Conley and Oden signing, but it's not a guarantee. With the O'Brien lawsuit being pushed back, the situation wasn't helped any, but it's not about things getting any worse just as much as the Lawrence North camp wants closure before they sign which probably can't happen officially.
sylvesterequalsclutch (Sep 28, 2005 9:30:40 PM)
How long do you see Oden, Conley, Cook, Lightly staying in college? Anyone 1 and dones?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:31:18 PM)
Cook with a great season and Oden could possibly be gone after one year, but I believe the general working idea is that they will probably be there for two seasons. Lighty and Conley are more likely four year players.
MIKEDOSS (Sep 28, 2005 9:31:30 PM)
kyle thanks for time-----i would guess we are almost assured of the top class next year. are the juniors good enough to be rated that high or top 10
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:32:34 PM)
Sure, they are good enough to be that high. A lot of it will depend on the fourth (or possibly fifth if something changes) player. Koufos, Lauderdale and Diebler would be a top 10 class, but with Love or Alabi, you could be talking a top five type of haul.
MJ (Sep 28, 2005 9:32:45 PM)

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:32:52 PM)
Aaron is an offensive lineman

Kyle-Any word on Chris Wright (2007 Wing recruit)?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:33:32 PM)
He appears to be a lean to Michigan with Dayton hanging close. Ohio State has recruited him moderately, but I don't get the impression it will get any more serious.
uaghetto (Sep 28, 2005 9:33:45 PM)
With regard to the 2007 class, with Diebler in the fold and things looking good for Lauderdale and Koufas, what are the chances of Dante Jackson being offered? What does he need to show Matta and his staff to improve his chances? Personally, I'm rooting for the kid...
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:35:47 PM)
Better ball-handling and shooting are the two things he needs to do better to get an offer. As of now the chances seem to be slim with him being offered, but this is a long process, and you just never know. They definitely like the kid as much as anyone does from an attitude and personality stand point, and they think he's a good player. I don't think he did himself any favors by staying on the Cowboys for as long as he did. If he had gotten a little more exposure, perhaps they could have seen more of him and maybe gotten an offer by now. We'll see. Nothing is over with just yet. Doesn't look promising for him, but you never know.
Delphos (Sep 28, 2005 9:35:54 PM)
Who's the next Big Ten coach to get canned or move off to another job?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:37:16 PM)
Really, really tough to say. I personally think Mike Davis will be on the hot seat if he underachieves in any capacity this season. Losing Oden didn't help him at all. Tommy Amaker is the only other guy that could be in trouble, but that's only if for some odd reason they don't make the NCAA tournament. And honestly, Michigan should have a good team and I just don't see that.

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:39:03 PM)
I assume you mean Brandan Wright, of Brentwood, Tenn? I believe Brandan is a Kentucky lean slightly ahead of Duke and North Carolina. As of two weeks ago, there are a few people that thought he was UK bound. We'll see how that turns out.

sylvesterequalsclutch (Sep 28, 2005 9:39:49 PM)
Any players who are flying under the radar for the '06 class that could jump onto the national scene during their senior season?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:41:14 PM)
Adrion Graves is a really good one right here in Ohio. Whoever ends up with Graves will be really happy if he keeps his head in the books and works hard. He's the one that really jumps out. Also, I haven't tracked his progress through the summer, but the David Thompson kid out of Grand Rapids, Mich. that I saw this spring was only 5-10, but that kid could really be a big time scorer some place.

The only other guy about that big on Spiece was Josh McRoberts, but that was last season. He is at Duke now.

i live in indiana and mike davis is on very thin ice. people will want alford, but matta will also get a call. what are the odds he listens?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:43:36 PM)
In 10 years from now, if the Indiana job is open, I think Matta may listen. But right now, he's not crazy. He is not going to leave a program with all the momentum in the world and unlimited potential. Indiana could have had Matta if they had made the decision to terminate Davis last spring.

I have not even been paying attention to their lists recently because they don't mean a whole heck of a lot. They are a package deal most likely, but where there list should more likely read....
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:46:12 PM)
wherever Huggins goes, wherever Dwain Barnes is, whatever is best for them for one year, or wherever they can go out and play with little resistance.
bw1954 (Sep 28, 2005 9:46:36 PM)
The Diebler commitment is awesome .His peformance at the State Tourney is one of the best I've seen since Kellog . I believe he is the real deal while others say it was afluke . Whats your thoughts ?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:47:57 PM)
I don't really think it was a fluke necessarily. I mean the kid destroyed St. Vincent/ St. Mary, Dunbar, and then Wooster Triway in the biggest three games of the year. That's impressive and you can't call that a fluke. But i'm not convinced he's consistent enough you can expect those performances from him all the time. We'll see how he does without Jake and without Micheali up there in Upper Sandusky.
MIKEDOSS (Sep 28, 2005 9:48:06 PM)

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:48:52 PM)
Gates is high on Ohio State. He was really high on Cincinnati too before the Huggins firing. Right now Ohio State is in a real good position with him, but he may opt to go somewhere else if the frontcourt fills up in front of him.
BUCKEYESS (Sep 28, 2005 9:48:59 PM)
Kyle who are our starting guard by the end of the year?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:49:57 PM)
Butler, Lewis and Sullinger with Foster and Mayes both logging a lot of minutes. It's possible you could see five guys with around 25 minutes apiece.
uaghetto (Sep 28, 2005 9:50:14 PM)
Where do we stand with Rakim Sanders? I really think we need another guard in the 2007 class and he'd certainly fit the bill.
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:51:17 PM)
Ohio State is one of the three or four schools in with Sanders along with Providence, Boston College and Syracuse. Check back in about a month from now, and his recruitment might start taking a little more shape. This was going to be the month they let coaches come in, and at the end of the month, they wanted to narrow it down to about four or five schools and go through the season with just those four or five teams. Ohio State is expected to be one of them.
BUCKEYESS (Sep 28, 2005 9:51:22 PM)
What's your opinon on Dwain Barnes Kyle?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:52:42 PM)
I think he's a guy that cares for O.J. and Bill, but he's not stupid, he knows the net worth of the situation. He makes decisions that will best help put them in a situation we all can only dream of. I think he's a little too competitive at times, and I don't agree with a lot that he says or does, but in the end, I think he ultimately means well.
MIKEDOSS (Sep 28, 2005 9:53:05 PM)
have you seen much of the new kids mayes, bell and the brookhaven player---sorry name escapes me. how will they fit into the current rotation
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:54:02 PM)
I have seen Lewis a lot more because I saw him a lot when he played for Brookhaven, but I saw enough of Mayes and Bell in the summer league to at least understand their abilities. My feeling is that Lewis will be the leading scorer. I think he will get a lot of FT attempts and he looks like he has really improved.....
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:54:47 PM)
Mayes will be a guy that can score in bunches. He's lightning quick and can beat you off the dribble, but he has pro range and a quick release on his shot. He can take over a game and will do just that. Bell won't score a lot this year, I don't think, but he should be good enough to come off the bench and play some minutes if needed.
tarbuck (Sep 28, 2005 9:54:56 PM)

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:55:56 PM)
I've heard a lot of rumors and talks but nothing concrete. Two names i've heard whispers about is Cincinnati and Florida. Also, Ohio State is confirmed for next season's Wooden Tradition in Indianapolis (opponent unknown although it should be a big name).
Delphos (Sep 28, 2005 9:56:07 PM)
Speaking of 2007 guards, I would think OSU would have a decent shot at Alex Legion. He doesn't even list OSU, I believe.
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:56:42 PM)
He's a guy they have looked at, and I think they like Durrell Summers even more. Neither seems to be very interested with the current depth chart they would be walking into.
sylvesterequalsclutch (Sep 28, 2005 9:56:58 PM)
Have you seen Illinois recruit Richard Semrau play, and if so what do you think of him?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:58:11 PM)
Last spring I liked him a lot. He was running the floor, hitting shots from the outside, and was mixing it up in the paint for loose balls and rebounds. This year, he was missing everything, he didn't look any stronger (and actually looked like he regressed), and hung around the outside too much. Still a high ceiling, but right now i'm lukewarm.
MJ (Sep 28, 2005 9:58:18 PM)
Just how tall is Twig 6-7 or 6-8?
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:58:44 PM)
He's 6-9 in my estimation. He's a little taller than Terence Dials, who is probably about 6-8 realistically.
BUCKEYESS (Sep 28, 2005 9:59:00 PM)
Kyle, I worry alot about our lack of rebounding. Are Bell and Terwilliger's games advanced enough to be able to help Dials out on the boards or do you see them riding the pine mosly.
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 9:59:36 PM)
They definitely won't ride the pine, or at least, Terwilliger won't. He will have to be the back up in the post for Dials this year (they are going to start with Bell playing the four)....
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 10:00:30 PM)
but you're very correct, rebounding will be the biggest concern going into the season. I don't see anyone that can be a consistent answer on the boards outside of Dials and Sullinger, but I think Bell will help in stretches if he is productive enough offensively and (especially) defensively to get minutes.

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 10:05:35 PM)
Ohio State isn't yet guaranteed of being No. 1. North Carolina could still sneak in there if they finish perfectly. Those two will be one and two though. Louisville has a real nice class, Duke has a real nice class, and Memphis, Texas, Connecticut and Georgetown are all coming up with some real nice hauls
Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 28, 2005 10:06:58 PM)
Memphis could end up with Willie Kemp and Thaddeus Young (Kemp just committed today). Carolina has Tywon Lawson and Wayne Ellington, and they have a real good shot at Spencer Hawes and Alex Stepheson (and maybe still Thaddeus). Texas nabbed Kevin Durant and is still hoping for Durrell Arthur.
