Hello bigbuck18...I assume this is the first question of the night chat and I thank you for contributing. Every one was high on Javon Ringer at this time a year ago but a combination of his injury around this time a year ago and the uncertainty of his academic situation proved detrimental to Ringer becoming a Buckeye. Jarrod Smith was somewhat of a late arrival to the recruiting scene. He had a nice Akron combine, the first time I really became aware of him, and it seems he took the early offer...wasn't there family ties to Indiana or something?, and went with the Hoosiers. Can't get everybody and sometimes OSU misses on the obvious like Ringer possibly or even Tyrell Sutton, one of my favorites. If there ever was a Jim Tressel recruit it was Tyrell Sutton and OSU never even sniffed him. They went with M. Wells early and never even gave Sutton the time of day. Great kid no doubt!
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 9:16:03 PM)
It's good to know the injury to Derrell Johnson wasn't as bad as it could have been. He's got a fracture in his fibula, the smaller bone in the lower leg, right below the knee but the MRI showed no ligament damage around the knee area so no need for rods and pins and screws or any of that stuff. Whether or not Johnson can be back in time for the playoffs or not is another story to be determined. But at least he now has a shot. Mooney should do well enough to earn a home game in the first round and maybe they won't need him until the second or third round. But he's already proven to be an athletic talent worth keeping an eye on. OSU is interested.
lookouts (Sep 29, 2005 9:20:49 PM)
Hey Gary, quick question for you, if Aaron Brown (Cin. Princeton) commits to another school on Oct. 6, will the Buckeyes give his scholarship offer to Bill Nagy (Hudson HS)6'3'' 295 or Ryan Palmer (Glenoak HS) 6'7'' 290? Both have said they would love to be Buckeeys.
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 9:20:49 PM)
Hi lookouts...either of them are still in the picture even if Brown commits (to OSU). From what I'm hearing from multiple sources, Browning is the next OL on their list. They also like Joe Thomas as have I since I watched him last year many times next to Boone at right guard. I don't think they will turn Thomas around (from his Pitt commit) but you never know. He was at the Iowa game with Nate Oliver from Ed's who I like a whole lot. Oliver could be a top five guy in this talented junior class. I think Nagy and Palmer are still guys to consider but it could depend on if they're able to do anything with Joe Thomas or not.
hammer59 (Sep 29, 2005 9:24:42 PM)
Hey Gary, hope you are well, and wondering what you think about our chances on the Glenville kids. I am hoping for Small & Rose, but what do you think about the chances with the others? Thanx!
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 9:24:42 PM)
Hi hammer59...I don't want to use the word 'lock' for Rose and Small so I'll use every other word but that. If I played my audio tape for everyone from my interviews with Rose and Small, you would know why I'm so optimistic. I don't even paint the picture as good as it really is if you read that update I did on them last week. And then Ginn Sr. and a couple of other guys on the staff are there to confirm everything for me. In addition to Rose and Small, I am hearing that Browning could come on board as well and there is still a chance for Royce Adams also. I would say two for sure, three real probable and four possible. Next year Jamale Hines is a top priority and possibly Kyle Jefferson who is underachieving in a big way this year.
MIKEDOSS (Sep 29, 2005 9:30:00 PM)
have you seen the junior qb smith if so evaluate him and will he be an osu recruit?
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 9:30:00 PM)
Hi MikeDoss nice hit on Reuben Droughns last week...lol. I saw Smith first at the state track meet and watched him throw the discuss, I believe it was, and then I saw him again at the Akron combine where I was really impressed with him physically. He's got good size and is real strong and throws a real strong ball. I haven't seen him in a game but he really seems to have a lot going for him and he has a good solid head on his shoulders. His dad coached him in track and was there with him in Akron so I have to believe he's involved in all aspects of preparing his son for the next level. My first impressions of him have been very favorable. I know Marshall and WVa. are likely to be real strong after him, Tennessee I heard as well, but I don't know yet how hot OSU is on him yet. I hope they're interested.
ervsuperb (Sep 29, 2005 9:32:57 PM)
Gary, hope this isn't a duplicate question. First thanks for the Aaron Brown update. It really seemed to diffuse some of the misinformation and negativity. How's the Ray Small recruting effort going?
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 9:32:57 PM)
Hi ervsuperb...the best way I can put the situation with Small and Rose if they are not Buckeyes this time next year than I will 100 percent shocked and surprised. Small is really Good. He looked really good against Harding and a couple of other games I was at of Glenville's (Mentor and Cleveland East Tech). Small and Rose will both be Buckeyes!
MIKEDOSS (Sep 29, 2005 9:36:22 PM)
im from indiana where football just keeps kids in shape for b-ball. whats the best ne ohio hich school youve seen?
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 9:36:22 PM)
I intend to see Ignatius and Massillon on Saturday so I'll have an even better opinion but right now, hands down, Glenville is the best team I've seen this year in the state let alone NE Ohio. I haven't seen McKinley yet as well but I doubt they're as good as last year, they lost a lot of talent. I can see Glenville and Iggy in the semis this year for the right to play Colerain who is now obviously clicking on all cylinders. St. X didn't do much for me in week one. I haven't seen Ed's yet. I like Fornapple the QB and Edmunds the tailback but I doubt they're as good as they were last year. I say Glenville is the team to beat but them playing Senate league teams from here on out can not help them a great deal.
10 and 1 (Sep 29, 2005 9:40:50 PM)
Has David Patterson grown into a true combo DT/DE or has the coaching staff had him put on extraneous bulk? It seems he lacks the explosiveness off the end that we saw him show in 2003.
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 9:40:50 PM)
Hi 10 and 1...I have heard from a couple of the O lineman that David Patterson is one of the hardest guys to actually block but he hasn't been a major playmaker early on in the season. Kudla seems to be the main playmaker on the line. Green and Pitcock are more than sturdy and solid on the inside and it seems that Wilson is emerging on the outside. That means that Patterson can play inside or out and I think he can be effective at either place as a change of pace defender. I like the D-Line as a group a lot thus far.

Gary any news on how Freddie Lenix is doing these days? Thanks!
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 9:44:28 PM)
I spoke to Freddie at the beginning of the season and he seems to think that he's doing good and he's where he needs to be right now. He thinks he should be good in time for the winter quarter but it could possibly take him until the spring. I can only tell you what I am being told so I have to take him at face value. I was told it's easier to get him in during the winter or spring quarters than it is in the fall. We shall see. He is trying to take care of business though I can tell you that.

Gary, Which Big Ten team has surprised you so far, including disapointments?
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 9:48:13 PM)
No one really. I didn't think Iowa and Michigan were as good as advertised and I think that is accurate. I thought OSU would be strong and that is accurate. I knew Penn State would be better but they haven't played anybody yet. Minny will be a nice test for them to survive. I thought Minny and MSU were going to be solid as is the case with Purdue but the jury is still out on all of those three. I didn't think Wisky would be a major factor but Calhoun makes them a factor. I think it's gone pretty much as I figured with the exception of Purdue losing last week but that's okay since they don't play OSU or Michigan. OSU is in good shape if they take care of business in Happy Valley.
ervsuperb (Sep 29, 2005 9:50:58 PM)
What are the greatest concerns OSU has in their preparations for Penn State?
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 9:50:58 PM)
Speaking of PSU...playing them at night on the road has concerned me from the outset. It will be a hostile environment but if the best team wins that night then OSU should come away with the victory. This was actually the one game I thought OSU would stub their foot on but now that they lost to Texas, they can not lose any others. So I'll stick with OSU's great defense and their much improved offense. Seriously, OSU has the better talent and they should get the victory though it won't be easy.

Gary. Really like the way Pittman ran the ball last week. But he just doesn't seem to be very durable. Takes himself out alot. Is he going to be able to last the whole year?
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 9:55:43 PM)
Arlin asks about Pittman and I have to believe he'll be good enough and durable enough to make the offense work fine. In JT's offense, Troy Smith is the best running back anyway so Pittman is a complementary back. I for one don't like the QB to be the top running back but that's the direction that JT has chosen. I for one, still believe that JZ is the better pure quarterback of the two but TS is a better fit for the team. Sure TS is not a stiff by any means, but he clearly needs a lot of fundamental work at the positon still. But obviously TS is more of a leader and is more charismatic and he fits what JT wants at the position better than JZ. We started talking about running backs and ended talking about quarterbacks. Smile!

GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 9:56:55 PM)
I'm sorry to say that it doesn't seem as if Gibson is as high a priority as he once was for OSU. I don't have the answer to that question right now.
s/lgh;oirewg (Sep 29, 2005 10:00:00 PM)
Who else is OSU looking at as far as interior DL? Larimore from INDY, and who else? Rose end up on the inside? Sorry if this has been asked. The depth needs to be addressed quickly. Do you not think?
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 10:00:00 PM)
I like Larimore a lot from eyeballing him at camp and I also have been an advocate of Rose playing on the inside for quite some time now. I thought he was as good as he was all last season playing on the inside against McKinley in the semifinals. He domininated on the interior for the most part. But he envisions himself on the outside at this time and that's all right. Just get him in the fold and let his talent determine where he will play at the next level. I agree with Green leaving that the interior defensive line needs a nice infusion of talent. I think Larimore will be a nice piece.

GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 10:01:22 PM)
Yes I believe Irizarry will play college football again next year at YSU and he will have two seasons of eligibility remaining. As far as Guilford is concerned...I do not have an answer there.
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 10:02:44 PM)
I'm talking with Chris Wells right now...hold on.
AnotherBuck (Sep 29, 2005 10:09:18 PM)
Gary, so is Chris Wells going to be suspended this week? What exactly did he do?
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 10:09:18 PM)
Wells is fine...I just spoke with him on the phone. He probably won't start this week but he will play. Cortez Jones was involved in a separate incident that had nothing to do with Wells. Jones will not start, either. Wells was more frustrated than anything during the Ellet game. He will play this week and the remainder of the season. He just told me he thinks his official visit to OSU will be against Michigan State.

What's up with the Morgan Williams kid. Is he legit? Quite confident to say the least.
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 10:10:43 PM)
He's legit but he's no Tyrell Sutton, he's no Chris Wells, he's no Ryan Brinson. He's just a good back for McKinley and Joe Morgan is a real nice receiver.

GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 10:12:16 PM)
Close but not quite. And Brian Hoyer is his back up who I like a lot as well. Good for Stanton that he's been able to overcome his injury situation from a season ago. I like him a lot.

Gary, do you think USC goes down? Hey, by losing to Texas these other games are more fun to watch
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 10:15:44 PM)
I really don't think anyone can beat USC and it's just a matter if Texas stumbles or not. They could. I'm still hoping for a USC-OSU Rose Bowl but I really doubt it now. I just want to continue watching OSU play defense this year and let everything else fall where it may. I want to just enjoy watching A.J. Hawk and Bobby Carpenter play while they're still Buckeyes. No offense to anyone else on defense but I really think these two guys are out of this world players.
s/lgh;oirewg (Sep 29, 2005 10:17:32 PM)
Also, do you feel OSU will be able to rattle PSU's QB? Are their Frosh wr's all that they are advertised as? Or do we even know going by the teams they have played so far...I love my moniker.
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 10:17:33 PM)
Yes I think OSU's defense is good enough to shut PSU down period, quarterback and all. And yes I do think the two freshman are as good as advertised. But they will learn a few things against the Buckeyes. PSU will have their hands full this week with Minnesota I'm certain. They're living in a bubble right now.
Guest (Sep 29, 2005 10:20:19 PM)
Jenkins has gotten lucky each game with safeties bailing him out when he's bitten on plays or just gotten burned off the line. He's definitely learning on the job. Would he have played so much if not for the good to great play of Salley/Whitner to date?
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 10:20:19 PM)
I think Jenkins has legitmate talent and will only get better with each rep. Getting burnt is a part of learning and it actually speeds up the process. I think his talent is the main reason why he's already on the field so much at this time. If you noticed later in the game against Iowa in their regular defense, Everett was still playing corner when they weren't in the nickel package...so I don't know if Jenkins has completely won over that position yet. Good veteran experience is hard to beat.
ToledoBucknutty (Sep 29, 2005 10:22:31 PM)
What do you think needs to happen to get TGII going? Or is it just that they're keying on him....and freeing up AG and others?
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 10:22:31 PM)
Just get him the ball. Or find him the ways to get him the ball. But that would be playing outside of the box in this system. As much as I hate to say it, JT neutralizes a talent like Ginn more than any defense could possibly hope or even dream to. JT's offensive box expands only so much no matter who the players are in the box.
marksgforce (Sep 29, 2005 10:23:58 PM)
Do you think the Bucks run out of the Power-I at least as much as they did against Iowa? More?

GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 10:26:20 PM)
I'm guessing it's tough on him and his entire family. It's ironic really when you consider that his brother Jared was in a similar position as the backup quarterback in his final two years at YSU after their national championship quarterback graduated. Wow!

GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 10:28:29 PM)
I highly doubt it. I would think OSU fans should be really happy and satisfied if A.J. nabs the Butkus award.

The junior lineman from Cincinnati -- Ben ??? -- what are the Buckeyes chances? Will he get an offer the day after NLOID?
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 10:31:29 PM)
Ben Martin from LaSalle is a great looking prospect. I would say 50-50 right now and I would think he would get an offer on LOI day if not sooner. He's a great looking prospect at defensive end. Another top five, top three, prospect in the state in his class no question.

Who has the better stiffarm, Beanie or Clarett and who is more of a power break tackles kind of back
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 10:36:06 PM)
great question carmenohio...both have/had great stiff arms. Reecie devoted his entire senior season to developing his stiff arm. That was the last piece to his puzzle of being a complete running back. And he mastered it. Beenie, like Reecie, has a great stiff arm and it's longer and stronger than Reecie's. That's the major difference. Reecie was more compact and tacklers bounced off of him, where as Beanie draws a bead on a tackler and goes directly for him and as a result misses on a cut here or there. I watched film with him and Coach Sax in Garfield's locker room last week before the Army AA presentation and we watched Beanie do just that. He missed a cut back to the inside because he went directly after a DB that flashed in his way. I think They're both extremely talented.

I don't know if this is accurate or not but I'll throw it out there any way since this is an informal chat. I didn't read this myself but someone told me it was in the Youngstown Vindicator that Miles is back at YSU along with Irizarry and he could possibly be playing for the Penquins next year. I'll check on that and confirm it but I was told that to be a fact. Since you asked I thought I would throw that out there. I will try to confirm the validity of that statement.

enough joking, sorry about that Gary, I respect what you do for us. No doubt. Any talent in the Columbus area coming down the pipe in the near future? Or just preferred walk-on types?
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 10:42:57 PM)
I have a feeling if it's not Cumberland or even Mark Jackson, which it probably will not, there may not ever be another player from Central Ohio to ever get a scholarship to OSU! Lol! But the preferred walk ons from that area do rather well. Minnesota keeps getting the best talent in Columbus and for the most part they are guys that OSU wasn't after anyway. Even Gary Russell, the other guy to Erik Haw, wasn't really coveted by OSU. Alex Daniels was obviously so we will see how he indeed turns out in the future. But for the most part those were B-list players...no offense. I'm waiting for the next Big Kat!

oh (Sep 29, 2005 10:47:33 PM)
Gary, after this year of course we lose Hawk and Carpenter but beyond that not too much esle. With Freeman and Hoobler to fill that void, could we actually be better next year?
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 10:47:33 PM)
Hi oh...sure OSU loses some great LB's, three of them, and Mike Kudla and Nate Salley and Tyler Everett and Marcus Green but next year's defense will be right there once again. And I think Heacock has a lot to do with me making that statement. I love his fire and enthusiasm with his troops down on the sideline when they come off the field. He's such a solid veteran coach and has really seemed to have found his niche. The depth all over on defense is lights out so next year's unit should pick up right where this year's leaves off.
AnotherBuck (Sep 29, 2005 10:48:25 PM)
Gary, AJ Hawk might not have enough numbers to win it. He is averaging about 10 tackles per game. That PSU LB last week had 24 tackles. It pays to play with weak teammates.
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 10:48:25 PM)
Yeah but he had a great game on national TV against Texas, the only game in town that night. That will go a long way in people's minds alone.
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 10:50:53 PM)
Anything else? It's been a quick hour and half or so with the exception of that short pause to talk to Chris Wells. If you missed it, Wells was simply frustrated last week, as a result of losing to an inferior team no doubt, but he will not be suspended this week or any game in the future. He did not have any run in with the police as some have reported elsewhere. He's just really disappointed in his senior season...he wanted very much to go deep into the playoffs but the talent around him is obviously lacking.
GaryHousteau (Sep 29, 2005 10:54:20 PM)
With that I'll call it a night. Thanks to everyone who participated in the chat. I'm surprised by the lack of Aaron Brown questions tonight but there's really nothing to report. He will visit Purdue this weekend, Notre Dame will likely put one last strong push oh him while he's out there, I hope OSU doesn't just sit tight. If I have to guess right now I will say OSU but it could be any of the four honestly...OSU, Va. Tech, ND or Purdue. Distance alone could be the final determining factor. Good night everyone! Enjoy your bye weekend. I am planning on seeing Iggy and Massillon on Saturday so I'm looking forward to that. Go Bucks!
