Housteau Chat Archive: Oct. 7

Gary Housteau stopped by club chat today to discuss the upcoming OSU/PSU game, some recruiting, and some high school football. Read on for a free transcript.

Good morning...

buckaroo (Oct 7, 2005 11:14:27 AM)
Hey Gary, do you know the "inside story to the whole AB situation?

GaryHousteau (Oct 7, 2005 11:15:29 AM)
Hi Buckaroo...thanks for the opening question this morning...Aaron Brown....where do I start?

GaryHousteau (Oct 7, 2005 11:20:15 AM)
Obviously I don't know the whole story if you've been reading the message boards this week. Aaron thinks he has a better chance to play early at Virginia Tech than anywhere else and he decided to go there. I wish him luck. The only thing that matters with recruiting is that the player is happy because he has to make the decision. I just think egos may have clashed and the bottom line it's hard to let a 6-6 athletic lineman leave the state. I believe he has a great upside and time will tell if that's the case. I do know it would be better to ride the pine at OSU for a few years than it would be at VT since he's only an hour and a half away. And obviously the Brown family missed out on the part that OSU people and players, for the most part, take care of their own! They must have missed that memo.

buckaroo (Oct 7, 2005 11:15:45 AM)
Which position are you most concerned about with this recruiting class?

GaryHousteau (Oct 7, 2005 11:22:32 AM)
Buckroo...I think both the offensive line, particularly at tackle, and the defensive line positions are a big concern as I see it. Maybe the staff feels confident a guy like Jake Ballard can and will play tackle or maybe even Doug Worthington could come over there but OSU needs a few more OT in the pipeline.

GaryHousteau (Oct 7, 2005 11:27:11 AM)
I'm still deciding on my game for tonight between Mooney and Benedictine or traveling farther west to see Avon Lake tonight. I wish Derrell Johnson was playing for Mooney but I do want to get another look at Jahmal Brown for Bene. As far as Avon is concerned, they graduated a ton of talent and are still right back in the thick of things. If I go to Mooney I'll have a chance to visit with Johnson I'm sure. I'm going to see Glenville play at 3 this afternoon. Why not? It's an early game so it gives me another chance to see them play and talk to the players again.

Guest (Oct 7, 2005 11:30:45 AM)
Gary, I see Robinson making 1-2 key mistakes (fumble, int), do you foresee this happening as well, and what outcome do you see tomorrow night?

GaryHousteau (Oct 7, 2005 11:30:46 AM)
Canalfultonbuckeye asks about Robinson and the outcome and I have to admit this will be one game where I will love to see Tresselball in it's full glory. Control the ball, control the clock, keep the ball away from PSU potentially explosive offense...they haven't played against D any where near like OSU's...and get 3 or 6 points any chance you get. The worse the weather, the worse the chance the PSU has in the game. I like OSU's chances in this game but it will be a great GameDay atmosphere no question.

Guest (Oct 7, 2005 11:31:49 AM)
Gary, what will the score be tomorrow?

GaryHousteau (Oct 7, 2005 11:31:49 AM)
Canal asks about the score and I would say 24-13...OSU!

buckaroo (Oct 7, 2005 11:36:00 AM)
I also have a question regarding the Bucknut staff. Has there been any consideration of adding someone to the staff to cover with more detail the South and the Southwest area of Ohio? It seems like the NE gets plenty of coverage. I, for one, would love to see more pieces on kids from the Cincy, Dayton, and parts north (Coldwater). One look at the roster and you will see that this area has contributed many Bucks to the program. Just curious?

GaryHousteau (Oct 7, 2005 11:36:00 AM)
Buckaroo I don't know about any of those types of decisions, Steve is the guy to ask about that. As far as myself is concerned, I live in NE Ohio and have a full-time job outside of what I do here at Bucknuts. If I was able to do more I would. I do intend to attend the Coldwater game next Friday since you mentioned that school. I agree there is a lot of talent in that part of the state and I try to get to couple of games in that area but time doesn't usually make that possible for me. There's just not enough of it in a week for me.

jcfiesta (Oct 7, 2005 11:43:57 AM)
What is the typical meal served to a recruit on an official visit and how does it compare the grub we fed George and AB? : )

GaryHousteau (Oct 7, 2005 11:43:57 AM)
Hi jcfiesta...that's a whole other can of worms in the George Brown/Aaron Brown fiasco. I believe, typically, a recruit on a visit gets to attend the team meal/breakfast and eat with his position players if it's an afternoon game. After the game the kid meets up with his host and they do the town...get food...whatever. With Brown's case they played a game in Shaker Heights on Saturday afternoon and didn't make it to Columbus until after 7 p.m. for an 8 o'clock game. Being they had five weeks to make five visits, OSU was the only school they could slot in that week and still make it to a game. That's what I was told. Why the firm Oct. 6 deadline? I'm not sure other than they did want to start all the paperwork for early enrollment and have the decision behind them. That's according to the Brown side. Obviously there are stories to the contrary but I certainly didn't the fax from the OSU side that others in the know did. I'm certain that wasn't the deciding factor in eliminating OSU but it just was another factor.

GaryHousteau (Oct 7, 2005 11:49:43 AM)
If you have any other questions feel free to send them in at any time. Again the reason for the early chat today is so that I can leave early to attend a 3 o'clock game today. And the only reason why I would go see Glenville play another Senate league team today is because I can because of the time. I'm of the persuasion that you can't ever see too many Glenville games since the school is obviously a major supplier of D-I talent. And for those of you who may have missed it, Lindsey Witten, another of Donte Whitner's brothers gave a verbal commitment to Toledo this week. I watched him closely at the Glenville Harding game and he actually had a better game than Rob Rose against the Raiders. I'm not saying he's a better prospect, but he's real tall and skinny, 6-4, 190, but he can play some solid defensive end.

Guest (Oct 7, 2005 11:55:26 AM)
Do you think that Tressel doesn't feel that Troy can throw the long ball well? It seems like we have abandoned a vertical passing game. I think we really need to attempt some bombs to back up the secondary and help our running game.

GaryHousteau (Oct 7, 2005 11:55:26 AM)
Hi jimT...I just am positive that we will never see a prolific vertical passing game undre JT's guidance. It's not a knock, it's just a fact. It doesn't fit his coaching philosophy. The vertical game, for the most part, is either used a surprise or it's not really used at all. It just doesn't fit the M.O. It's a "let's take a shot with it now" play.

TerryGordfish1 (Oct 7, 2005 11:59:02 AM)
Good morning, Gary. First-time chatter, long-time fan. I apologize if this has already been asked, but is there any truth to the rumors that JoePa has disinvited all recruits to the game tomorrow night? If so, I think this has an adverse effect on the Buckeyes recruiting as well since guys like McCarthy, J.B. Walton, Hebron and others were supposed to be in attendance. Thoughts?

GaryHousteau (Oct 7, 2005 11:59:02 AM)
Hi Terry welcome to the chat...to be honest with you I've only read what you have read about that and I think there is no real logical explanation for a ridiculous maneuver like that. Obviously he must be trying to stress the importance of this game to his team but that just cutting off your nose to spite your face. I hear the OSU staff really likes McCarthy and he was happy with his visit so that won't change anything for him. Not sure about how that might effect the other two guys you mentioned. I'm sure it would have been nice for them to see OSU play well in Happy Valley.

The same scenario that has played out over the last two seasons in reguards to our first road game is in place. Night game, after a bye week. Do you think the fact that we already have a loss will be a factor in us being more focused and ready for the challenge of the road?

GaryHousteau (Oct 7, 2005 12:02:23 PM)
jimT1972 if OSU should lose this week in a night game after a bye week then a negative trend is really beginning to be established no question But just the fact that Penn State is 6-0 and OSU is at their place for a night game should be more than enough motivation without worrying about a night game after a bye week. OSU needs to win this game to win a Big Ten title and this is the last time that Hawk, Capenter Kudla , et al, will have this chance. So I see the Buckeyes playing well in an adverse situation.

jimT1972 (Oct 7, 2005 12:05:15 PM)
Is a n.c. still on the teams "to do " list? If so, I think that we not only need to win out, but look impressive in those wins to sway voters. We all know that JT is the most conservative man on the planet. Will he change his philosophy at all and realize that it isn't a bad thing to actually score points?

GaryHousteau (Oct 7, 2005 12:05:15 PM)
Mike Kudla is one guy still searching for another national championship and I'm sure there are many others on the team as well. All's the players need to worry about is win one at a time. The bigger the game, the tighter the vest usually so that part of the equation is not likely to change and nor should it in a big wet road game like the one this weekend.

GaryHousteau (Oct 7, 2005 12:05:41 PM)
Any other questions on your mind?

jimT1972 (Oct 7, 2005 12:08:42 PM)
Will our d-line put pressure on Robinson? I'm hearing that their offense line might be a little suspect. If that's the case, can we count on him giving us the ball two or three times?

GaryHousteau (Oct 7, 2005 12:08:42 PM)
I really like the progress of the defensive line, they're making this defense more formidable than expected. I don't think you can count on anything like that but I think it's possible sure.

jimT1972 (Oct 7, 2005 12:10:46 PM)
Jumping ahead a week or two, when D'Andrea comes back, do we still see Carpenter at DE, or will they be using Mike instead?

GaryHousteau (Oct 7, 2005 12:10:46 PM)
I don't know that answer but my guess is that he would be weaned back into action at middle linebacker in maybe a 3-4 look. I sort of like the way they use Carpenter in certain situations and I wouldn't want that to change much if at all. Carpenter and Kudla really makes things interesting on the outside.

GaryHousteau (Oct 7, 2005 12:11:57 PM)
I think we will be seeing more of TGII with the ball in his hands this week so that is obviously a good thing.

GaryHousteau (Oct 7, 2005 12:14:12 PM)
I like OSU 24-13 in this one...if PSU scores that much. I figure a TD and two FGs is generous. Remember PSU has a very good defense of their own so it will not be an easy day for the Bucks on offense but I think TGII might help things out a bit this week.

GaryHousteau (Oct 7, 2005 12:16:13 PM)
That's it for today. Try to stay dry if you're going to a high school game this weekend.
