JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:14:16 PM)

Kirk L. (Apr 18, 2002 8:14:31 PM)
Hello Justin!

Kirk L.  (Apr 18, 2002 8:15:59 PM)
Ready to get started?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:16:08 PM)
Let's do it

OzBuck  (Apr 18, 2002 8:16:31 PM)
Hey, Justin. Glad you could make it tonight.

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:16:43 PM)
Thanks for having me

Kirk L. (Apr 18, 2002 8:16:54 PM)
Ok, I'm going to start with a couple e-mail questions I got. This one is from Walter S:

Kirk L.  (Apr 18, 2002 8:17:02 PM)
"In the fall, you will only get approximately 3 weeks of practice before the first game. How familiar are you with the Ohio State offensive playbook?"

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:18:28 PM)
Well, the coaching staff isn't allowed to send me the whole playbook. However, they are allowed to send me a few pages here and there of what they're doing. I haven't gotten too familiar with it as of right now, but being at practice and talking with my brother Jared, who played for Coach Tressel, I have picked up a little bit

Marysville Buck-I  (Apr 18, 2002 8:16:28 PM)
Justin, has it been determined what # you will were this fall?

JayZ  (Apr 18, 2002 8:19:41 PM)
Not as of right now. The last time we talked about the number situation, I told them either 5 or 9 since 12 isn't available.

Marysville Buck-I (Apr 18, 2002 8:17:20 PM)
Justin, you mentioned once that you wouldn't mind redshirting. Do you still feel that way?

JayZ  (Apr 18, 2002 8:20:51 PM)
I'm just going compete as I have my whole career and see what the Coaches want to do with me. If they want to red shirt me then I will red shirt. Whatever is best for the team.

nbuck (Apr 18, 2002 8:17:54 PM)
justin are you working shaun and devon to the death for ohio state?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:22:18 PM)
You better believe it. Shawn and I have a class together and everytime I see Devin I say something to him. I want to say it's looking pretty good, but you never know.

george  (Apr 18, 2002 8:19:43 PM)
does the fact that our RBs should be good and get alot of carries make you a kittle nervous that we may not pass as much as you would like?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:24:05 PM)
I believe in order to have a good team, you're going to need to run and throw the ball the right amount. Yes, we have a lot of talent at our tailback position, but we are also loaded at the receiver spot . It could be interesting.

dragonknight (Apr 18, 2002 8:22:40 PM)
Any of the WR's you may be throwing to come fall impress you at practice?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:25:18 PM)
They all look like they've matured from last year and it was fun watching them catch the ball.

Marysville Buck-I (Apr 18, 2002 8:24:54 PM)
Justin, did you ever seriously consider Michigan? (Don't worry, if we throw things, we can't hit you.) : ^ )

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:26:48 PM)
Yes, I gave Michigan quite a good look, but with Coach Tressel and his staff, that sealed the deal for Ohio State.

nbuck (Apr 18, 2002 8:24:55 PM)
justin it has been noticed at practice that you have been around big derek what is your impression of him and any news that you can share if he feels he will be able to make it to fall camp?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:28:04 PM)
Derek is amazing, I love his size, and I actually had a chance to workout with him when we were both there for the week. He's a strong kid and I'm happy he's part of our family.

dragonknight  (Apr 18, 2002 8:28:35 PM)
Did he mention anything about quailfying?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:29:14 PM)
No, I believe he went to take the test Saturday morning of that week.

Hubbard (Apr 18, 2002 8:29:11 PM)
family, I like the word you used there. Is that a big part of your decision to come here, becoming apart of a new family with JT?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:30:25 PM)
Yes, my family is always showing me support and I figure the family I'm about to enter will do the same.

OzBuck (Apr 18, 2002 8:28:25 PM)
What are and were your impressions of Coach Tressel? How did he and his staff cinch the deal? I've never heard a negative comment about JT.

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:32:39 PM)
He's a Coach of great morals, character, and someone that I feel comfortable being around. That was the biggest thing for me. Being comfortable with the coaching staff, the people I will be around for the next 4 or 5 years of my life was important to me.

nbuck (Apr 18, 2002 8:29:57 PM)
justin what are your thoughts as of now when you think of running onto the field for the first game?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:34:08 PM)
I almost got a glimpse of it during last season, just walking down the tunnel. Being suited up and running onto the field with my teammates will be something I'll never forget.

Hoosier Buck (Apr 18, 2002 8:32:39 PM)
Justin, I read that Joel Penton will be your roomie....true? I hear he's a real good young man!

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:35:30 PM)
He's awesome. I had a chance to go to Van Wert and stay with Joel, we seem to get along very well and have the same philosophies towards football and life.

dragonknight (Apr 18, 2002 8:31:25 PM)
What's your plans in the off season before you head to OSU?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:36:17 PM)
As of now, I'm just working out four days a week getting myself prepared as much as I can.

Marysville Buck-I  (Apr 18, 2002 8:30:26 PM)
Justin, if you had to rate your biggest strength and the area where you hope to improve the most, what would they be?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:37:18 PM)
My greatest strength is knowing that I still need to improve in all areas.

OzBuck (Apr 18, 2002 8:32:04 PM)
We kept hearing how you took on a leadership role in talking with possible recruits. Did you enjoy your recruiting experience?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:38:50 PM)
Yes I did. At first it was weird calling guys, not knowing if they'd know who I was or not. After a while it just felt normal and I had no problem doing it at all. It was nice getting to know all of the guys over the phone and then meeting them in person.

nbuck (Apr 18, 2002 8:35:11 PM)
except for all star games will you be down in columbus early to live with your brother and participate in summer workouts?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:40:12 PM)
Well, I can't participate in summer workouts that the coaches are at. I can only go to the things that the players run themselves. I will be doing that as much as possible though.

Marysville Buck-I  (Apr 18, 2002 8:37:57 PM)
Justin, how much surfing do you do on OSU boards/sites?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:41:03 PM)
None, my dad does enough for the entire family.

dragonknight (Apr 18, 2002 8:38:03 PM)
Have you had the chance to get to know any of your older teammates?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:42:11 PM)
Yes, that's what I try to do when I'm down there. I just want to be around and start relationships with those guys so when I get down there I'll already know them.

Kirk L. (Apr 18, 2002 8:42:44 PM)
george had a question but I lost it... he wanted to know with all the hype, what do you do to keep a level head?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:43:44 PM)
My family has done a great job teaching me how to deal with things, and I realize that it's a team effort in anything you do in life.

Kirk L. (Apr 18, 2002 8:44:33 PM)
armybuck asks "Justin, Have you been able to form a good relationship with Craig or Scott?"

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:45:33 PM)
I sit in meetings with them and have had a chance to talk with them but not too much off the football field.

Kirk L. (Apr 18, 2002 8:45:43 PM)
I knew Mr. Bucknuts would ask this one...

MrBucknuts  (Apr 18, 2002 8:42:30 PM)
JZ: My only question - Buster Davis thought "rooming with you" was cool. What did you think of 'ol Buster?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:46:56 PM)
Buster was a different kind of guy. I had a lot of fun with him on our visit and we kept in contact after that was all said and done. I was really surprised how things turned out with him but I always told him whatever was best for him he should do.

Hoosier Buck (Apr 18, 2002 8:38:58 PM)
Justin, In Massillon's offense, what was the max number of receivers that might be involved in a play?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:48:11 PM)
At times we would have up to 5 receivers but in our base offense we had 3.

OzBuck (ID=32) (Apr 18, 2002 8:38:24 PM)
What pass play do you enjoy connecting on the most?

dragonknight (Apr 18, 2002 8:45:16 PM)
From what you've seen, how different is the OSU offense from the one you're use to running?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:49:30 PM)
It's a little more play action in OSU offense than Massillon's.

nbuck (Apr 18, 2002 8:45:22 PM)
justin do you think it is kinda weird i mean alot of us are much older than you and here we are sooo happy to have you here at osu, does that kinda amuse you that us older folks are so darn giddy when you commited?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:50:47 PM)
When I sit back and think about it, it is kind of crazy, but I know how the die hard Buckeye fans are, and i'm just as excited about it.

Marysville Buck-I (Apr 18, 2002 8:44:19 PM)
Justin, who are some of the ex-Buckeyes or NFL QB's that you really like(d).

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:52:21 PM)
I was a big fan of Joe Germaine, and Bobby Hoying when they were playing. I actually had a chance to meet Bobby when I was there for spring practice, which was pretty neat.

Marysville Buck-I (Apr 18, 2002 8:49:01 PM)
Justin, are you up on Ohio State traditions? If so, do you a favorite tradition?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:53:35 PM)
As of now the only tradition I'm really aware of is the Alma Mater singing after each game.

george (Apr 18, 2002 8:49:18 PM)
Justin, do you believe that you could come in if you had to and lead our team to victory in a backup role or are you a starter all the way and need to have that rhythum that you get from taking a snap every play?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:54:37 PM)
I"ll do whatever is asked of me, and at all times i will strive for victory.

nbuck  (Apr 18, 2002 8:53:26 PM)
justin what are your current stats hgt ? weight?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:55:22 PM)
right now i'm about 6'4'' 220

dragonknight (Apr 18, 2002 8:55:23 PM)
How would you rate your running ability?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:56:44 PM)
It's better than what people give me credit for. I can scramble around if i need to.

george (Apr 18, 2002 8:55:52 PM)
is there a QB somewhere (college or pro) that you would compare your playing style to?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:57:43 PM)
No, I've always tried to copy the work ethic of a Peyton Manning, but i wouldn't say my style of play is like his.

dragonknight (Apr 18, 2002 8:52:43 PM)
Have you really had some contact with Peyton Manning?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 8:58:41 PM)
He sent me a film of drills he does at the beginning of my junior year.

george (Apr 18, 2002 8:58:53 PM)
have you met Troy Smith? what are your opinions about his as a possible QB that you will be competeing with?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 9:01:08 PM)
I had a chance to go to the Elite 11 with Troy. He's a great QB and i look forward to working with him if that's what they decide they want him playing.

Marysville Buck-I  (Apr 18, 2002 8:58:03 PM)
Justin, what WR would you compare Devon Jordan to?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 9:02:17 PM)
that's a tough question. Devin is a guy that can take the game over. He's such a smart receiver he knows where the openings are and what to do with them. He's a guy that QBs everywhere would want to throw to.

nbuck  (Apr 18, 2002 8:57:31 PM)
how far can or have you thrown a ball in the air from a snap and dropback?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 9:03:02 PM)
in our preseason scrimmage against Mentor my senior year. I hooked up with Devin for a bomb that went 70 in the air.

dragonknight (Apr 18, 2002 9:00:18 PM)
What are you interests away from football?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 9:04:05 PM)
I just like to hang out with the guys. Play some euchre, and PS2.

OzBuck (Apr 18, 2002 9:02:01 PM)
Do you feel comfortable throwing all types of passes? What type of routes do you feel are your strength to throw to and which ones do you need to work on?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 9:05:03 PM)
I just like to throw the ball, no matter what type of pass it is.

nbuck  (Apr 18, 2002 9:03:36 PM)
speaking of the elite 11 do you think it was fair that some gurus downgraded you skills vs. other qb there i understand that your hamstring was bothering you,do you regret going?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 9:07:21 PM)
No I don't regret going. It was a great time. Yes i was just coming off injury, but really those people that downgraded me don't bother me. I know my abilities and what i'm able to do with a football.

Kirk L. (Apr 18, 2002 9:07:56 PM)
Just a few more minutes everyone... get us your final questions and we'll try and get as many in as possible. I'll hang around for a few min after to chat a bit more...

Marysville Buck-I (Apr 18, 2002 9:07:07 PM)
Can you tell us anything about the play of some of your teammates in the 2002 class? Did you see many of them play?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 9:09:19 PM)
I had the chance to play against Tyler Everett and Maurice Clarett in a scrimmage, but other then that I didn't have a chance to get to any others.

Riptide (Apr 18, 2002 9:08:15 PM)
Justin, is OSU planning on implementing more spread offense during the next 2-3 seasons?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 9:10:05 PM)
I'm hoping that we do. I know we have the athletes to do it, it's just a matter of getting everyone on the same page.

armybuck (Apr 18, 2002 9:08:59 PM)
From watching the spring practice, what stands out as the greatest difference from HS football?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 9:11:10 PM)
I think just the speed of everything is the biggest difference. In college everyone is fast there isn't a weak point in too many peoples defenses.

Marysville Buck-I  (Apr 18, 2002 9:11:39 PM)
Justin, who has impressed you the most in spring practice?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 9:12:23 PM)
I enjoyed watching everyone, especially Maurice since I know him so well and he is in my class.

OzBuck (Apr 18, 2002 9:10:06 PM)
Do you relish being in such a limelight, being the Ohio bred "QB savior". With the mishaps at QB the last few years at OSU and the fans' reactions, do you feel any apprehension at the expectations?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 9:13:46 PM)
I know there is going to be plenty of expectations, I am just going to try and not pay attention to those and just play my game. Do the things that I've always done.

Kirk L.  (Apr 18, 2002 9:12:41 PM)
Ok, we'll close with the next question...

Riptide (Apr 18, 2002 9:12:55 PM)
Justin, is Devon Jordan coming to OSU?

JayZ (Apr 18, 2002 9:13:58 PM)
I'd have to say things with Devin are looking good.

Kirk L. (Apr 18, 2002 9:14:43 PM)
Ok, we want to definitely thank Justin for stopping by and chatting with us tonight. It was our pleasure! Justin, on behalf of, thank you and best of luck, and we will be cheering for you!

Hubbard (Apr 18, 2002 9:14:37 PM)
Take care, and I am looking forward to the battle you are going to bring this fall

OzBuck  (Apr 18, 2002 9:15:08 PM)
