Housteau Chat Archive: Oct. 21

Gary Housteau stopped by club chat today to discuss OSU football and recruiting and give his thoughts on some of the top Buckeye recruiting battles. We have a transcript posted below.

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 1:21:18 PM)
Hi guys, sorry I was finishing up a photogallery of the Holy War and I didn't know if I'd lose it or not so I had to stay with it I'm sorry for the delay. Fire away!

pdm (Oct 21, 2005 1:23:53 PM)
Gary, Many are looking for a blowout against IU, I will be very happy to see TO free and a consitent offense in this victory. Your thoughts.

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 1:23:53 PM)
Hi pdm and thanks for sending the first question to get this chat under way...now sure what TO is that you're referring to but I certainly am expecting to see Ohio State come out and take control of this game early. I'll actually be taping the game while I'm at the St. X-Iggy game tomorrow afternoon so that tells you how concerned I am with the outcome! Not! Smile!

MacAuley (Oct 21, 2005 1:27:30 PM)
(Formerly BuckeyeDave) Gary - Thanks for your time today. What is your biggest area of corcern for tomorrow's game? What are the odds that some of the underclassmen get some significant PT?

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 1:27:30 PM)
Hi MacAuley??? My biggest concern is...I don't have one honestly...Ohio State is the better team in all facets of the game and I'm expecting them to display their superiority. Troy Smith needs to be consistent and not produce turnovers and it should be a lopsided victory. I would love to see some of those hardworking underclassmen get rewarded with extended playing time. Thanks for introducing your name change BuckeyeDave, you've been a consistent presence in my chats and I appreciate it.

bucks4fun (Oct 21, 2005 1:31:17 PM)
So you think that JT will meet his offensive goals tomorrow. 200 rush, 250 pass and 30+

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 1:31:17 PM)
Yes buck4fun and everyone will be singing Kumbaya after the win but they better put it in perspective quickly and put it behind them immediately. They should meet their goals anyway.

labsbeabmm (Oct 21, 2005 1:36:11 PM)
I don't know about you but I'm beginning to be nervous about filling out this recruiting class.

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 1:36:11 PM)
Hi labsbeabmm...I haven't typed that name in a while it seems. I have to believe the staff has their master plan and a few guys on our message boards with connections to the staff seem to think they do. If they don't then it's borderline incompetence and I don't see that being the case with JT at the helm. I still think losing Boren, Brown and Thomas is a tremendous blow even though Boren was a Michigan legacy. I can't figure out any plausible strategy with the offensive line situation. I believe that the staff will close hard but it looks they will be aiming OOS for the most part from this point on. Let's not forget about Rose and Small as future members of this class. Possibly Gibson but that's not likely at this point. The staff has their work cut out for them. I'd like to see Derrell Johnson also but he's got work to do as well before an offer materializes.

bucks4fun (Oct 21, 2005 1:42:40 PM)
Gary, Our O-line recruiting is Conner Smith and who? How many do we take and who are they?

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 1:42:40 PM)
I've always believed this class needed 4 and at one time I thought it was the Big Three and maybe Thomas. I actually believed that at one point this spring. It was actually looking very probable if Thomas could be won over...now look at the situation. But it is what it is. I've known that Browning was likely for some time now, hence the cover of Ohio High, but the word was it would be when not if. I don't know how the staff will fill the other one or two slots. They certainly haven't made anyone instate feel special to this point. They must be focusing on someone not on our radar at this point. Maybe Sam Young from Florida is a silent verbal. Not! Smile!

MacAuley (Oct 21, 2005 1:45:25 PM)
Any idea if Steve will be at the Ohio St Alumni Assoc'n Buckeye Bash tomorrow?

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 1:45:25 PM)
Don't know that MacAuley...I was contemplating on going as late as yesterday but the logistics just weren't in my favor. I don't know Steve's Itinerary other than he'll be out there tonight.

robochef (Oct 21, 2005 1:48:23 PM)
Hey Gary, how many yards does Pittman run for? Do we see Schnit or Wells tote the ball as well?

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 1:48:24 PM)
Hi robochef, I would hope to see him get at least 130 or more. I see a lot of ball control and a few passes mixed in throughout the game. This will be a clinic in Tressel Ball 101. I'm guessing that Wells will get his biggest chance of the season to this point and Schnittker will get a couple more chances as well.

robochef (Oct 21, 2005 1:49:04 PM)
Whats the scoop on Mister Alexander? The Hot news was the first I have read about him. Is he another under the radar stud like Jenkins?

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 1:49:04 PM)
I missed the hot news robochef...fill me in please?

robochef (Oct 21, 2005 1:54:20 PM)
In your opinion. Whos takes over for Salley next season...O'Neal or Mitchell. Pros and Cons of both. I know it is still early and a lot can change between now and then.

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 1:54:20 PM)
I would expect to see O'Neal become firmly ensconced in that position beginning next season. I've been watching J.O. warm up the past couple weeks closely and he seems to be thicker than I've ever seen him. He can be a lethal weapon back there when you consider his physical abilities and his size. I like him a lot and I think he will leap frog a guy like Nick Patterson who I like a whole lot as well. There's some good depth there either way next year. Mitchell is of course the veteran who should still be a factor, like this year, in any nickel or even dime packages. I think J.O. breaks out in a big way next year.

TheeOhioStateFan (Oct 21, 2005 1:55:59 PM)
question...im new to this chat and i've asked 2 questions already and was the first one in the room and have had neither of them answered

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 1:55:59 PM)
Sorry TheeOhioStateFan...welcome to the chat I appreciate your participation. I must have missed your questions because I came on late today due to an photo gallery I was working on. Please reask your questions and I'll do my best to get to them when I come accross them. Thanks again...and smile!

robochef (Oct 21, 2005 1:57:57 PM)
Mister Alexander is a safety prospect from TX with like 4.7 speed, lacks burst but supposedly great insticts. They say he projects at either safety or OLB. He is 6'3" and about 180 or 190 lbs.

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 1:57:57 PM)
There sounds like a lot of projection there. I'm not familiar with him at this time so I can't really comment. Sounds like he can use some weight and work on his 40 time a little.

pdm (Oct 21, 2005 2:02:43 PM)
Gary, Do you think a winning program and national exposure is more important to a recruit rather than the system? I refer to offense and defense philosophy.

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 2:02:43 PM)
First of all, I really think being an Ohio kid and playing for Ohio State means a whole lot to most of the top players in the state that I come across. Not all obviously! The majority of my contacts are with Ohio kids so I can't address that as well nationally. For the most part, the instate kids that don't choose OSU now with Tressel here, there usually is a reason other than they went with the school that was right for them. I think for the OOS kids maybe a winning program and national exposure mean a lot more. I think it will no doubt be harder and harder to get OOS talent on offense to come to Ohio State. On defense...you bet! Why not? That's why losing a guy like Martin to ND if that happens wouldn't be devastating but it would be hard to accept.

labsbeabmm (Oct 21, 2005 2:05:29 PM)
Do we get Wes Lyons?

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 2:05:29 PM)
I'm starting to think Ohio State does not get Lyons. I just don't see the same enthusiasm in his face that I've seen in the past to be honest. His brother being at OSU still means a lot and the fact that he's redshirtting means even more, but he may see the grass being greener elsewhere. His high school team doesn't have a prolific offense either so he should be use to this by now! I'm still holding out hope that OSU will get him...he's so tall and athletic...you can't teach that stuff.

buckgrad (Oct 21, 2005 2:11:25 PM)
Gary, Im late so hopefully this hasnt been asked. Is Small still a a Buckeye gimme or is there some truth to the rumors about him and SC? Thanks

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 2:11:25 PM)
I don't know any other way to convince anyone, I really don't. A lot of you guys think I get so close to the players that I can't even see the forest...blah, blah, blah. I sat and heard the same things with Whitner, Hiley and TGII and held my position with them and I'm holding it firmly now. True I have a great relationship with all things Glenville, it can't get any better. Coach Ginn is a personal friend of mine and we talk regularly. I know almost the entire staff. I talk face to face with Rose and Small every chance I get. They have both shot USC down to me! It's not a matter of if Small and Rose will commit to OSU, it's only a matter of when. I don't know how else to say it. Now if I tell you things have gone south...then you can worry about it. From everything I know...things have not gone south!

buckgrad (Oct 21, 2005 2:14:19 PM)
Gary, any wavering by Chris Wells? I hear he is going to visit UM and USC, that cant be goood. Thanks

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 2:14:19 PM)
Absolutely none buckgrad! I have a tremendous relationship with Beanie, I think Steve Helwagen can vouch for that, and he's going nowhere but OSU. There is zero chance of him going anywhere else but OSU.

TheeOhioStateFan (Oct 21, 2005 2:18:23 PM)
Chris Wells way better than Clarett? Living in the Ytown area I've had the chance to see Clarett play on many occassions and he was the best high school player I had ever seen. So, I was appalled at hearing this until I saw Wells play. Way better? I don't know, but better. I don't see it, but I believe he should start as a fresh maybe. I've really liked what I've seen in Pittman and he continues to improve but Wells is better than Clarett which def makes him better than Pittman. I know the fact that there wasn't a proven back at the time in Ross and Hall played a big part in his starting but if we want a true nation title-caliber team then the coaches btter think twice before starting Pittman over wells. What's your take?

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 2:18:23 PM)
I couldn't agree with you more TheeOhioStateFan, I'm in Boardman right now as I type this response. I grew up in Youngstown and have watched Reecie back in the junior high. He was definitely the best I had ever seen until Beanie came along. Maybe not way better as you say but better...that's my sentiments exact. He's a powerful runner with better size than Reecie and yet he can take to the house at any minute. And he has a little wiggle to him just as Reecie did. I definitely see him doing well in the spring and getting PT early next season. I like Pittman also so it could be a nice 1-2 punch!

robochef (Oct 21, 2005 2:21:03 PM)
After the visit what are the chances of us landing Wes Lyons? With the recent accuracy of our qbs teh bigger the targets the better...

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 2:21:03 PM)
He should be a priority in my opinion. I see him being more polished as a receiver than Chichester. The two would be an imosing twin-tower tandem! I contemplate this a lot and in the end...although he may want to truly go to West Virginia possibly, I think he will choose OSU. It will be interesting to see if I get invited when he gets set to announce his decision. They did it up for Devon and I'm certain the family will do the same with Wesley.

TheeOhioStateFan (Oct 21, 2005 2:24:21 PM)
There has been talk that Ray Small prefers WR over CB but there have also been rumors that he has given his word to USC over "his equal" OSU even though they have only offered him on the grounds of a CB. Do you think there is a good chance he will go Scarlet & Gray because along with playing CB Ohio State uses a lot of no prototype WR (i.e. Holmes 5'11, Ginn 6'0, Gonzalez 6'0) and he may be able to play a little of both even though he's only 5'11?

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 2:24:21 PM)
I've sort of addressed this a few questions ago but not the offense or defense part of the question. I know for certain that he wants to play on offense at the next level but he would play on defense if he was asked to. IMHO, Small isn't nearly the defensive player that TGII was at Glenville, not even close. I'm not bashing Small on defense, he's a quality defender, but Ginn made huge plays at cornerback by baiting QB's and stealing the ball. Ginn was a QB as a senior at Glenville and he understood the position well. I see no logic at all in bringing Small in a DB especially when he would rather play offense. He's a playmaker on offense that's for sure.

redondo (Oct 21, 2005 2:28:28 PM)
Gary - Is Small doing the Glenville thing, only this time on sigining day it's USC, not OSU?

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 2:28:29 PM)
Redondo...now that Ginn Sr. is the head coach of the East squad for the All-American game in January, I'm of the belief that somehow Small will find his way on the roster, even though they're already set, and will be standing next to Rose as both players pull OSU hats out of the bag on national TV in January. I'm sure we will all know by them because Rose and Small are going to the same school (i.e. Ohio State) and even if Small isn't invited to play in the game I think he will be there with Rose and together they'll pull out OSU hats together. It could be a first in that regard. Now do you think for a minute that Rose or Small would embarrass Ginn Sr. on national TV and pull a USC hat out of the bag? Are you kidding me? Not a chance!

photogbuck (Oct 21, 2005 2:32:15 PM)
Gary, nice to finally meet you. I was there in between the hotel and the arena taking pics next you. I'm late, whatgame are seeing tonight?

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 2:32:15 PM)
Nice to meet you too photogbuck...I'm not such a bad guy am I? It's been my pleasure of the past years to meet so many of you who are members of the websites that i've worked for. I've developed some great friendships with many people that I would have never have had the chance to meet if it wasn't for this type of forum and I'm thankful for it. I haven't yet decided on my game tonight. I could go to see Wesley Lyons play tonight against Penn Hills or I could go see McKinley and Hoover or go see Jordan Mabin. Those are my likely choices. Tomorrow it's X-Iggy and possibley Mentor Lake Catholic tomorrow night. We shall play it by ear.

photogbuck (Oct 21, 2005 2:32:53 PM)
And have you answered the recent chatter about Ray Small and USC?

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 2:32:53 PM)
I have indeed as you will find out when you peruse the chat at a later time! All good IMHO!

JimC (Oct 21, 2005 2:36:58 PM)
Hi Gary, Who fills out our linebackers? Do we get Johnson for Cali?

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 2:36:58 PM)
Don't know that answer JimC but I thought the staff really liked the McCarthy kid who was on an official a few weeks ago...the Iowa game I think. Wallace thinks Ohio State has a legitimate shot at Johnson so i'll have go with that right now. I would love to say it will be Gibson. I talked with him at the Iggy-Ed's game last week, he had an Ohio State stocking cap on by the way, and he has yet to make any official visit plans to Ohio State. I know he's going to Michigan on an official, go figure, but I don't know if it's for the OSU week or not. I didn't ask him. Duh? Gibson likes OSU but I don't know if OSU can get him in or not.

robochef (Oct 21, 2005 2:40:24 PM)
Whats the deal with Ginn and Michigan. Is Carr really that arrogant or is Ginn pushing some buttons that could turn out to bite him?

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 2:40:24 PM)
I can tell you this, Woods is like a son to Ginn, as are many of his guys and it's true that they all think Woods has gotten a raw deal, but that's not the reason. Michigan knows that they're never going to get another top ranked Ohio State kid again and I'm sure they're not taking that out on Woods. But I'm sure that exaserbates (?) the situation. Woods was really Ginn's first legitimate player that took his program over the threshold. TGII is very close with Woods. If JT came one year sooner than Woods would be a Buckeye right now.

Guest (Oct 21, 2005 2:43:01 PM)
There is a post on one of the message boards that hints that TGI and the Glenville pipeline are instrumental in preserving Coach Tressel's job at Ohio St. I don't believe it. I don't think there is any HS coach or other person involved with local HS athletics that holds that kind of influence. (Though I believe a certain Mr. Brown tried to exert some influence.) Additionally, I don't think Coach Tressel needs any help in that vein. Your thoughts?

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 2:43:01 PM)
Not even close to being true MacAuley, that's giving Ginn way too much credit. Ginn has not one thing to do or say about JT being the head coach at Ohio State nor how he coaches nor how he recruits. Nonsense!

JimC (Oct 21, 2005 2:46:25 PM)
After Troy amd Justin graduate, who do you feel will be the next starting QB?

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 2:46:25 PM)
It's not fair to say this right now but I have a gut feeling that Rob Schoenhoft is really going to be special. That being said I'm sure Boeckman will be right there in the mix.

TheeOhioStateFan (Oct 21, 2005 2:51:09 PM)
all you hear about is Sutton and Ringer but Mario Manningham at Michigan kills me because i've been watching him since he was a soph and knew he was special when he burnt the (rivals.com) #2 DB in the nation in J O'neal all game long for i think 2 or 3 TD's and some sound receiving yards when he was manned up with him in the 04 Glenville/Harding game

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 2:51:09 PM)
I saw MM breakout game against Massillon in his sophomore year when he scored four TDs, two receiveing and two on punt returns in his first real game. I absolutely loved the kid on the gridiron. I watched him catch the winning TD against St. Eds when Harding snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. I knew that he, like I knew Sutton, would be a no-brainer. Loved them both. I liked Ringer a lot too but I didn't know him like I knew MM and Sutton. That being said. MM only burned O'Neal for one TD before he went back to the position he was better equipped for...safety. And O'Neal was probably just too aggressive against MM to man up on him. O'Neal is a punishing safety. But again I hear you loud and clear and I concur with your thoughts.

JimC (Oct 21, 2005 2:51:20 PM)
Can Illinois beat PSU? That would be nice!! I'm surprised it's the late game!!

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 2:51:20 PM)

photogbuck (Oct 21, 2005 2:57:58 PM)
Gary, two things. First off, I thought you somehow got some of my photos and posted them from the MSU walk from the hotel. I was going to SUE!! :) But if you could give me the run down of the best running backs in Ohio next year and where they are leaning. I know there are many, can't keep them str8.

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 2:57:58 PM)
Great question photogbuck. Danny Herron and Jordan Mabin are two of the better ones that come to my mind right off the bat. Both could be Big 10 caliber talents IMHO. Everyone talks about Devon Torrence but I think he's more of defensive guy from talking with some guys who follow recruiting closely. Torrence will be an OSU guy. Hosea Simpson Winton Woods is coming on strong and you can't ignore him. Morgan Williams of McKinley is making people forget Ryan Brinson rather quickly. Mark Wooldridge of Walsh Jesuit is nice little runner. Those are some of the more prominent names I can think of right now. Ohio State will definitely need one or two next year.

buckgrad (Oct 21, 2005 3:00:37 PM)
Gary, can you give me 5-6 players you feel about 90% confident will end up committing when its all said and done.

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 3:00:37 PM)
I probably can't buckgrad... the three kids from Glenville I'm 99 percent sure on and that's about it.

BuckeyePavs (Oct 21, 2005 3:06:42 PM)
Hey Gary...good to be chatting with you today. During the broadcast of last Saturday's game, Brent Musberger said that he asked JT why he missed out on Tyrell Sutton. Musberger said that JT's response was "we got in on him a little late." Do you feel that was JT covering up the fact that he blew recruiting him? Why would he say that? Or did OSU truly try to recruit him in the end. Do you feel Sutton would have been a Buckeye if we had offered him? Thanks in advance Gary...

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 3:06:42 PM)
I know Sutton's version very well and if "never" means "we got in on him a little late" then JT was answering candidly. I talked extensively with Sutton through out his junior and senior seasons and OSU never showed him any love. Never! They know they blew it on Sutton. I couldn't have screamed any louder than I did about him for two years to no avail. And the worst part of it all is that Sutton would have certainly listened to anything that JT or his staff would have had to say. He commited early early to NW to concentrate on his senior season more than anything but he also did it to protect his pride! But you bet he would have strongly considered any thing OSU would have said. I still communicate with Sutton now and I couldn't be happier for him! Sutton and Beanie are close and Sutton and Pittman are close. I think the two may evens be cousins if my memory serves me well.

JimC (Oct 21, 2005 3:07:23 PM)
Do you think Thomas will dump Pitt for OSU?

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 3:07:23 PM)
No! Call me gullible, call me naive...but that's my take on it.

TheeOhioStateFan (Oct 21, 2005 3:10:57 PM)
ya i saw that Harding/Massillon game as well...and just as he saved that game from going sour we will pretend it never happened just as he won the michigan psu game for them...and just hope that Warren, OHIO kids stop going to MICHIGAN

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 3:10:57 PM)
Maybe Danny Herron can start a new trend! By the way, I've heard reports that he can't catch the ball out of the backfield very well and I have to disagree with that a ton. Herron, like a lot of Harding backs, has made a career out of catching screen passes and running a ton with them. But that's just my perspective. As a Harding fan I'm sure you will concur TheeOhioStateFan! They have a really good junior class at Harding so maybe one them could find their way to Columbus.

BuckeyePavs (Oct 21, 2005 3:16:39 PM)
Hey Gary..I too saw the breakout game for MM against Massillon. Rick Shepas continuing to kick the ball to MM when the game should have been won....another huge coaching blunder for the books. I remember sitting last year eating dinner at the same table with Mario's mother. She was introduced to me through a mutual friend and she looked directly at my OSU shirt....she didn't say a thing. I had the opportunity right there to put in a plug for OSU, but froze. I am still disappointed to this day that I didn't say something to her. Anyhow, do you think Burgess was the reason that MM went to Michigan? Do you see Clarrett as the reason we are losing kids from Harding outside of the Steve Arnold? Also, MM burned O'Neal for two TD's...not to argue with you of course..but if I remember correctly, the first was a slant across the middle which O'Neal mis-tackled him and MM took off on..and the other was a deep fly pattern...they then moved O'Neal back to safety. I also remember that after watching O'Neal and MM

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 3:16:40 PM)
I've had conversations with MM in the recent past and he attributed his decision of going to the school up north to the offensive opportunities at that school as opposed to OSU. Ask some of the OSU players who played with him in Hershey and I'm certain they will tell you that is true...privately. Mario's grandfather, as I was told, absolutely loved JT and Ohio State but MM chose the school where he thought he would have the better opportunity to excel and it. True the Wolvererine connection and presence at Harding is somewhat ubiquitous but don't give it that much credit. True Burgess and Clarett didn't like each other and that may ultimately what happened there...but their alum isn't bashful about preaching maize and blue to their guys at Harding.

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 3:18:11 PM)
I'd have to check the video before I agree with that last statement on O'Neal and MM but I do know the Glenville staff gave J.O. a tounge lashing at halftime. Either way I always though safety was the more natural position for J.O.

redondo (Oct 21, 2005 3:19:41 PM)
Hi Gary - JT seems so scattered on offense from recruiting drop back passers and athletic passers to his play calling on game day. are we going to live like that forever? For such a detail oriented guy, the whole offense from penalties, to turnovers to playcalling just seems very out of character to me.

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 3:19:41 PM)
The penalties and turnovers are out of character for the most part taking all 20 years of his head coaching tenure into account but what you see offensively is what you're always going to get. The punt is the most important play in football, definitely not the forward pass! Smile!

GaryHousteau (Oct 21, 2005 3:22:57 PM)
That's it for today guys. I have to get going if I want to go to any game tonight. Thanks a bunch to all of you who participated in the chat. Sorrry for being late today but I had a good reason. Again I look for the Bucks to win big tomorrow. I also have been having a problem with my ezin box since June or July and I get frequent messages there that turn out to be garbled. So if you have received a response, that is why. Try emailing me at h2hsports@zoominternet.net instead. I'm sorry if you think I've ignored your questions or comments. Anyone know how I can get it fixed. Anyway enjoy a high school game tonight if you can and ... Go Bucks! Smile!
