Hi Kyle, What's this about UNC catching OSU's class? Are they really going to equal or surpass our class?
Kyle S. Lamb (Oct 25, 2005 2:05:47 PM)
In my opinion, they have definitely passed Ohio State. They have a really good class now
Kyle S. Lamb (Oct 25, 2005 2:07:57 PM)

Anything you guys want to ask me while we're waiting on Dave, feel free
drderm (Oct 25, 2005 2:10:52 PM)
Kyle, any new news on DL or KK?
Kyle S. Lamb (Oct 25, 2005 2:11:43 PM)
I'm still hearing much the same on Dallas Lauderdale. Everything is being denied publicly, but I believe he will be done with real soon. I keep hearing before practice begins, but at most by the beginning of the season. Koufos is solid for Ohio State, but that still might drag on until spring
Kyle S. Lamb (Oct 25, 2005 2:14:46 PM)
we had posted 2:30 apparently on the front page, but it was supposed to be 2 PM. He's going to be here in a few minutes and we'll get started
Kyle S. Lamb (Oct 25, 2005 2:15:11 PM)
Hey Dave, thanks for joining us! Sorry for the mix-up :)
Dave Telep (Oct 25, 2005 2:15:22 PM)
No problem ... good afternoon
Kyle S. Lamb (Oct 25, 2005 2:15:46 PM)
Ok folks. Dave is here and ready to go. We have his services for about a half hour, so fire your questions away if you haven't done so already!
drderm (Oct 25, 2005 2:15:57 PM)
Dave, have you seen Offutt play and is he a PG or SG?
Dave Telep (Oct 25, 2005 2:16:48 PM)
From what I've seen of him I think he's a shooting guard but he's missed some action because of the injury so I'm not sure where his game presently is. On a SG note, I think the guy should be a big timer. Been really impressed with how he carries himself and his overall talent level ...
Dave Telep (Oct 25, 2005 2:17:29 PM)
I first saw him as an 8th grader if you can believe that and the initial comparison i made was a Ray Allen style player. Strong skill level, good hoop IQ, and feel for the game!
exclusiveclothes (Oct 25, 2005 2:17:40 PM)
dave, do you think the national exposure the ACC gets hurts the big 10 as far as recruiting goes?
Dave Telep (Oct 25, 2005 2:19:13 PM)
Not really ... You know the Big Ten fared quite well this year ... At least three teams will have Top 25 recruiting classes and it's been stronger this year than last plus the region is loaded in the coming seasons. Now, that ACC Fox Package was a big help but Big Ten Basketball stands on its own merits. Right now, the ACC is hot. Back in the day, the Big East was the league. It can be cyclical
Kyle S. Lamb (Oct 25, 2005 2:20:25 PM)
Dave, one of the hot topics in Columbus right now is whether or not Mike Conley and Greg Oden will sign their national letters of intent on signing day starting here in November. What is your feeling on whether or not these guys will sign early or wait until spring?
Dave Telep (Oct 25, 2005 2:22:49 PM)
Well, i haven't posed the question to either of them but my friend Mike DeCourcy made the argument to me this morning that if they are worried about the NCAA then they probably are worried for no reason and that's the only hangup i can imagine. Look, OSU self imposed and you would think the school and the NCAA would have reached some kind of accord on the consequences. I don't see OSU getting surprised by anything and you know OSU is like an open book with Oden right now. He'll have a ton of information to decide whether he wants to sign or not but in the end I would think he'd sign and if something happened they could take steps to get out of the letter provided the school and Oden agree on some stipulations in advance.
SteveH (Oct 25, 2005 2:22:52 PM)
Dave, thanks for taking time from your busy schedule to answer questions for our subscribers, much appreciated.
drderm (Oct 25, 2005 2:23:27 PM)
Dave if you were Matta would you try for another commit for 2006 or bank until 2007. It seems like pickings are slim even before the signing date.
Dave Telep (Oct 25, 2005 2:24:22 PM)
My pleasure Steve. It's an exciting time to be a hoop fan in Columbus these days. Terrific crop of kids and I mean in more ways than one. These are good guys, not just big time players.
Dave Telep (Oct 25, 2005 2:24:25 PM)
Bank for 2007. Next question :)
SteveH (Oct 25, 2005 2:24:35 PM)
Dave, my question is which names outside Ohio in the 2007 class should be watching for. They already have Diebler in that class. Are there some OOS guys that we should watch for?
Kyle S. Lamb (Oct 25, 2005 2:25:58 PM)
Dave, the question from Steve was which names outside of Ohio in 2007 that Ohio State fans should watch for most notably.
Dave Telep (Oct 25, 2005 2:27:03 PM)
wow, you're assuming they'll go out of state ... that's radical when you have the kind of talent in the region ... who would you like to know about?
Dave Telep (Oct 25, 2005 2:29:42 PM)
Alabi ... very early in the deal. Most schools are just laying eyes on him. This is a guy who programs are just starting to do their homework on. I was supposed to fly down to FLA two weeks ago to see him but didn't make the trip. They have taken steps to begin evaluating and recruiting him ... in regards to Love: that one is going to take a long time. With him you go out and see him, keep in touch and try to make the short list. IMO, being mentioned with him is one thing but this is a long time from the date of when a decision will be made. Stay in the hunt, keep in touch but SOLID recruiting info won't come until the spring IMO.
drderm (Oct 25, 2005 2:29:57 PM)
Dave, when you talk to other coaches what have you heard from them regarding the fact Matta has landed recruits out to 2008.
Dave Telep (Oct 25, 2005 2:31:55 PM)
I think most coaches are not surprised because of the area they recruit in and passion that Matta has for recruiting. It's one thing to take commitments from kids out of your area and they are tougher to keep. It's another to lock down the borders and make it happen early in your area. To me, it sends the message that OSU is making it tough for ANYONE to come into Ohio and get a kid.
Seabus (Oct 25, 2005 2:32:00 PM)
Dave, can you talk about Thad Young's decision?? I was shocked he didn't choose UNC.
Dave Telep (Oct 25, 2005 2:33:53 PM)
Not shocked at all. Personally, I think Thad wanted to be a little more influential at a school and at UNC he would have been one of three elite recruits in a great class. At GT he can legitimately get them into the Top 3 of the league plus their academics were huge to him. Frankly, I thought he'd pull a surprise and stay home and play for Memphis in the end so that shows you what I know. Tennessee kids (Vincent Yarbrough, B. Wright) have a history of changing their minds late in the game and I thought Memphis was stronger with Thad but he proved me wrong.
SteveH (Oct 25, 2005 2:33:58 PM)
Koufos has long mentioned Maryland and I understand they had him out for Midnight Madness last week. Do you think Gary W. made some inroads there?
Dave Telep (Oct 25, 2005 2:35:23 PM)
I think he's got a lot of relatives in the area and he has formed a relationship with Coach Williams. To me, it's MD and OSU right now. I think the family ties to the area are what is keeping MD in the mix in a strong way. Having said that, mom is an OSU alum and that helped Washington with Spencer Hawes in the end as his parents couldn't say no to the alumni connections.
drderm (Oct 25, 2005 2:35:44 PM)
Dave, where do you think Mayo and Walker will end up?
Dave Telep (Oct 25, 2005 2:38:00 PM)
Call me crazy but I'm not convinced they play college basketball. Here's my rationale: Mayo is marketable. If anyone is going to get some money and a big endorsement deal, it's him. He's got the street cred to do it. If he goes that route, takes a big shoe deal (and those are tough to come by) he would then have to find some outlets for basketball for the year. That could be individual instruction or maybe overseas competitively ... To me, he's no lock to attend college. NOW, the flipside is if Bob Huggins gets a nice job, they could then piggyback and go with him. I'm just not sold these guys every play collegiately.
Kyle S. Lamb (Oct 25, 2005 2:38:49 PM)
Dave, a follow up to the Huggins situation... what players do you see following Huggins depending on where he lands for next season, i.e., maybe a Jason Bennett
Dave Telep (Oct 25, 2005 2:39:54 PM)
Jason Bennett is a Huggins guy. Xavier landed Adrion Graves who was thought to be a Huggins guys. Outside of those, I'm not sure who would follow. Bennett would be a strong candidate to follow Huggins.
Dave Telep (Oct 25, 2005 2:40:45 PM)
Bennett is basically waiting until the spring to see if Huggins gets a job. That's loyalty.
Kyle S. Lamb (Oct 25, 2005 2:41:04 PM)
Dave, i've heard rumblings of Ohio State being mentioned with Maryland's Austin Freeman, a 2007 guard. Anything to the interest for both parties with Freeman and Ohio State?
Dave Telep (Oct 25, 2005 2:42:26 PM)
My gut tells me he'll stay closer to home ... Worth the try but there are a ton of schools in the area that are on him hard.
Kyle S. Lamb (Oct 25, 2005 2:42:32 PM)
Folks, we have maybe 10 more minutes with Dave at most, so if you have any other questions you would like to ask, now is the time to get them in!
Seabus (Oct 25, 2005 2:42:55 PM)
With your Mayo scenario, what than happens with Ellis and Billy Walker?? I thought it would be a package deal to Cincy for a year or two. How good would that rivalry be if they played Ohio State??
Kyle S. Lamb (Oct 25, 2005 2:46:10 PM)
OK Dave, I have to put you on the spot. This is a popular debate that i've been asked recently (and probably will continue to be asked in the future)... a few people who couldn't attend wanted your opinion: The 2008 frontcourt guys, Delvon Roe, Yancy Gates and B.J. Mullens. How do you personally stack them up against one another?
Dave Telep (Oct 25, 2005 2:46:14 PM)
Walker is a Mayo guy for what it's worth. They'll stay together. Ellis is still developing and not on that level yet but should be a good HM player in the end
Dave Telep (Oct 25, 2005 2:48:29 PM)
In order right now: Gates, Mullens, Roe ... However, some are different positions. Roe is the PF/SF (and a good pitcher as you know) ....
Dave Telep (Oct 25, 2005 2:51:30 PM)
Roe is the energy guy who you would like to see grow. Gates is a potential beast with a strong skill set, size and athletic ability. Mullens, i've seen less of, but has been strong in his outings nationally. Takes time to sort them all out and you need to see how Roe develops but they are certainly priority guys and might be able to play together depending on development
Kyle S. Lamb (Oct 25, 2005 2:52:15 PM)
OK, final question from Seabus, and then we shall bid you a fond adieu. Thanks Dave for joining us and everyone stay tuned for more chats (as i'm sure Steve can fill you in) from Bucknuts this week and beyond...
Seabus (Oct 25, 2005 2:52:17 PM)
Dave, what do you expect from the Buckeyes this season?? Where in the Big Ten and do they get an NCAA bid? Thanks for joining!!
Dave Telep (Oct 25, 2005 2:55:52 PM)
Tough question. I think they'll be right there. If Mayes is as good as advertised ... Look, this is a program going in the right direction ... the logical next step is the NCAAs and all you can ask for as a fan is to have a chance to earn that bid. They'll do that this year and the next season is the window with Oden (since he'll probably just be there one year) to make it happen and cut down the nets.
Dave Telep (Oct 25, 2005 2:55:54 PM)
It's not too much to ask this of this current team to go dancing.
Kyle S. Lamb (Oct 25, 2005 2:56:17 PM)
Thanks Dave for joining us today
Kyle S. Lamb (Oct 25, 2005 2:56:34 PM)
It has been a pleasure, as always
SteveH (Oct 25, 2005 2:56:57 PM)
Thanks again Dave for stopping by.
Dave Telep (Oct 25, 2005 2:57:24 PM)
Thanks for having me. Anytime you have questions, please post them on the national recruiting board or gather them up, send them to Kyle and I'll be swift with my responses. Again, this is an exciting time for your program and I wish them the best of luck. This is what college basketball is all about: recruting the kids, coaching them up and strapping on the seat belt for the wild March ride!
Kyle S. Lamb (Oct 25, 2005 2:57:45 PM)
Thank you Dave, take care and we'll see you again soon i'm sure!
Kyle S. Lamb (Oct 25, 2005 2:59:53 PM)
Have a great day everyone.
