Hi Duane, Thanks for your time today. What are the chances of this next class being a top 5?
rbuck (Oct 31, 2005 2:13:05 PM)
Top 5 Class, that is.
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 2:15:04 PM)
I think that is very much up in the air. We are seeing things change. Academics are becoming a big issue this year. Look at the highly ranked kids that are not going to be a part of this class. Gibson and Cumberland are not going to make it. Both are top 100 players. Gibson always favored the Buckeyes and I think they could have gotten Cumberland. 2 more top 100 kids would definitely have an impact on the ratings.
max1dam (Oct 31, 2005 2:15:10 PM)
Thanks for all your efforts to keep us Buck fans "in the know"! Q - with OSU out for the NC this year, what does it look like next year? Also, who do the Bucks go for in recruiting next year that they have to get, and will? THANKS!
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 2:17:57 PM)
I think youth on defense is going to make or break next year. Fans are talking about the linebackers and seeing things through scarlet and gray colored glasses. You don't replace Hawk and Carpenter easily, and not right away with such unseasoned players. Look how few game reps the short list of replacements have. Offensively the Buckeyes could be the best of the Tressel era, especially of Holmes comes back.
BuckeyeJoe (Oct 31, 2005 2:18:07 PM)
What is your take on the job that Jenkins is doing at DB. Why did the secondary give up so many plays Sat.?
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 2:24:03 PM)
"Omar" is looking like a veteran out there. He is playing the ball and the run with equal aplomb. I would go so far as to say the most impressive freshman corner we have seen since Springs. I think way too much is being made out of Saturday. The defense was geared to stop the run and I agree with that strategy 100%. Cupito has never been as good as he was. I think Youboty's hip pointer played a huge part in what happened. What was different from the possible 1st round draft choice we saw 2 weeks ago and the vulnerable one we saw this past Saturday? He is hurt. I am told hip pointers really hurt. I doubt he plays if Everett is healthy. Underwood is out too. Between Cupito being on his game and Youboty hurt I am not concerned.
BuckDiego (Oct 31, 2005 2:24:10 PM)
Duane, this may seem like a ridiculous question but is it possible that we could see two 800-1000yd backs in the same backfield next year (or the year after)?
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 2:25:47 PM)
It is going to depend on how the coaching staff wants to play it. Are Wells and Pittman going to share time or is Wells going to just relieve Pittman for his first year?
redondo (Oct 31, 2005 2:25:56 PM)
Duane - It seems unusually quiet this year in the recruiting front. Is that a misperception on my part, or have the staff and recruits done a better jonb of keeping information on the "down low"?
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 2:29:02 PM)
I think the staff has been bushwacked with the academics of some of the kids this year. Gibson, Cumberland, Mark Johnson, Greg Mathews, Alex Dekle, Dublin. Just those kids right there would be a major factor in the Buckeyes finishing in the top 10. I think there is always a postseason re-evaluation, where we see some kids appear and others disappear. This year some big time kids went by the wayside because of grades.
ImBack45 (Oct 31, 2005 2:29:10 PM)
Hi Duane, Any new positive news on Thomas (OL), or is it a waste of time? Thx.!
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 2:30:05 PM)
No news is good news. He is going to have to change his mind. Look for a scheduled visit. If he does that I feel good about it.
notstudying (Oct 31, 2005 2:30:15 PM)
Is schwartz the real deal?
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 2:32:42 PM)
Coach Tressel seems to be accumulating legacy players, doesn't he? I think Schwartz is a player. I just don't know why there are going to be 8 safeties on the roster but only 10 OLs. That is something I don't understand. I am told he could grow into an LB. That makes more sense. No position needs bodies more than LB.
(Oct 31, 2005 2:33:07 PM)
More recruiting q's - who are the top 5 players the Bucks will work the hardest to get next year?
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 2:36:14 PM)
I have not seen enough film yet to say for sure but I would say Ben Martin and Devon Torrence are top targets. Next year could be the best year of my time as your "recruiting coordinator." I don't know about working hard for Torrence. He accepts on the spot when offered. You have Brian Gamble out there, Andrew Dailey, Chris Smith, Belton, Morgan Williams. Too early to tell.
paynebuck (Oct 31, 2005 2:36:35 PM)
With the job that Weis has done this yr. and now a 10 yr. contract, how much will will this affect the Bucks?
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 2:38:45 PM)
Unlike previous Notre Dame coaches he has stepped in and started to cause problems right away. He took a couple of good players out of here this year and is causing problems with Martin and Dailey for next year.
pdm (Oct 31, 2005 2:38:56 PM)
This defensive plan looked more like the one @ PSU...it really lacked blizt packages and pressure on the QB. Is there a reason why?
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 2:40:54 PM)
You don't blitz a stretch team. It is feast or famine. Get there and you get a loss. Miss and you create holes big enough to drive trucks through.
bcs05 (Oct 31, 2005 2:41:06 PM)
duane anything new with gibson?
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 2:43:27 PM)
Let me state once and for all. The chances of Gibson being in a Buckeye uniform in 2006-2007 is slim to none, and slim is out of town. Give up on it, Buckeye fans. There is almost nothing that he can do. It would take a minor miracle.
rbuck (Oct 31, 2005 2:43:41 PM)
In your opinion, what position does Ted Ginn play in the NFL? He just doesn't seem to have what it takes to be a great WR? Am I Crazy?
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 2:47:04 PM)
Teddy Ballgame has not played enough receiver to be a great route runner yet. He is only a sophmore, and came here as a corner. I still hear some fans talk about him as a corner. Why? He is not a physical player as a receiver. How is he going to play defense?
buckmark (Oct 31, 2005 2:47:25 PM)
We seem to always see tOSU get in on a few surprises late in the year and some have turned into great finds. Do you forsee that again this year?
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 2:49:50 PM)
I think that is really something you see with every good recruiting staff. They see players in camps and get a more up close and personal look at players.
pmoss (Oct 31, 2005 2:49:55 PM)
Hey Duane , any news on N. Davis how is his recruitment going?
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 2:50:33 PM)
I spoke to his coach recently. He is getting looks from the MAC.
redondo (Oct 31, 2005 2:50:43 PM)
Hi Duane - Do you think the Buckeyes have cast the nets far and wide enough this year for recruits? Thank you.
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 2:52:54 PM)
Not yet. Look at those players I mentioned earlier in the chat. That is an all-star team. The Buckeyes had a really good shot at landing every one of them, and led for most of them. Add them to what is already on board and you are talking about a sure top 10 and maybe a top 5 class. As it stands right now they can't take them. They had their kids. Now they have to re-group.
ginnpossible (Oct 31, 2005 2:53:07 PM)
Out of all the kids that OSU has received commitments from I feel that Josh Chischester is the one that OSU will benefit from the most in the future(ie Greg Carr FSU). Do you agree or disagree? He is a scary prospect, size and speed!!
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 2:55:11 PM)
Everyone is seeing Chichester as a possible wide receiver. He will only be a wide receiver in certain situations. Like the red zone. He will be a tight end here. I think he will be a good one.
G (Oct 31, 2005 2:55:21 PM)
Duane, what are your thoughts on Walter Dublin? Who would you like to see fill out this class on the line?
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 2:56:13 PM)
I would love to see Dublin in scarlet and gray. It looks like grades will be an issue but unlike Gibson and Cumberland, he still has a shot.
redondo (Oct 31, 2005 2:56:38 PM)
Hi Duane - I'm trying to compose a question that can be reasonably answered by you regarding ND recruiting. I hope this kind of hits the mark. I've read and heard ND has 20 verbals so far constituting a "nice" class. Let's say they can give five or so more and are perceived to have about a 15th or so ranking. How many spots in the rankings can a school (even ND) reasonably expect to climb with five or so slots left at this juncture? Top ten would seem doable, but what about top 5 or better?
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 2:57:29 PM)
I would like to see Rose and McKinney. I would love to get the tackle out of PIttsburgh to change his mind. I can't recall his name off the top of my head.
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 2:58:26 PM)
It depends on the recruits. They land 3-5 top 100 recruits it can push a school into the top 5. Those are difference maker type players. They make a difference in recruiting rankings too.
notstudying (Oct 31, 2005 2:58:33 PM)
I know we all seem to live and die by ratings, but think about our freshman D-ends.. worthington was a five star, and looks like a beast on paper (and in person), but does he even make trips? Conversely.. think of Jenkins.. wilson.. pittman.. Tressel has an eye, and that allows me to sleep at night. It's sad Thad Gibson's five stars aren't going to be apart of the 06 class, but would he have been able to pick up the defense and become an AJ hawk-like, smart/talented, player?
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 3:00:28 PM)
No question in my mind. Gibson is one of those difference makers. He is as good a linebacker prospect as I have seen in Ohio. He would have been that kind of player. Huge loss. Not just for Ohio State but for college football fans. I need to see him on a college football field next year to believe it.
labsbeabmm (Oct 31, 2005 3:00:46 PM)
Isn't amazing how the kids are getting faster. Remember when a 4.5 was blazing. Now Scwartz is 6 ft. 200 and runs a 4.5 and no one is impressed!
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 3:01:43 PM)
It is the nature of things. I remember when 240 lb DTs were the norm.
pmoss (Oct 31, 2005 3:01:49 PM)
Duane, In other years Glenville seem to had better talent than this year squad but this year's team seems to be coach ginn's best chance to win it all. Is this a down year for football in ohio or is the depth at G'ville that much better.
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 3:03:24 PM)
I think Ginn has a bunch of kids that are immersed in his system. I think this class is the first one with him as head coach that the majority of the kids were in his program their entire high school career. I also think Nelson is the best pure QB he has had.
BuckDiego (Oct 31, 2005 3:03:33 PM)
Have you heard anything recently on the status of Lenix? Is he doing the work necessary to get into school?
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 3:04:08 PM)
I have heard nothing about Lenix. Next time I speak to Sr I will ask him.
pdm (Oct 31, 2005 3:04:16 PM)
With rumblings of transfers and such, what is your best guess on how large the class of 2006 will be?
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 3:04:33 PM)
At least 20.
G (Oct 31, 2005 3:04:47 PM)
Duane, the past two classes in Ohio have been Dynamite. How do the upcoming classes stack up in your opinion? Any special guys like Wells or Ginn?
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 3:05:48 PM)
There are alot of bigtime players in the next class. It is just a matter of ranking them. I put their names out there earlier in the chat.
aspenbuck (Oct 31, 2005 3:06:02 PM)
Any word on who RB #2 will be in this recruiting class. Seems like we aren't really in on anyone in the second tier, so to speak. Any interest by the Bucks in Mohone or Schmidts?
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 3:07:10 PM)
Another thing I want to put to rest once and for all. There is no indication the staff is taking another back in this class.
lostmywalletinelsagundo (Oct 31, 2005 3:07:23 PM)
What are the chances OSU gets the running back from Texas next year? I forget his name already. Supposedly has ohio connections. Any thoughts?
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 3:08:40 PM)
I have heard the name. I know who you are talking about. He never leaves Texas. Lots of good backs in Ohio next year and with Wells onboard it will not be a high priority.
G (Oct 31, 2005 3:08:59 PM)
The key to the 02 defense was the D-line with Smith, Scott, Peterson, Anderson. As a whole unit we have not been getting it done this year and why we are overrated defensively. Yet individually I would stack up Pitcock and Patterson with 02 DT's. Is that a fair assessment or our we worse across the board? Our DE's get worse next year with no Kudla, he is playing ball. When do we get our line play back to 02?
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 3:10:26 PM)
I am going to have a hard time answering your question because there is no evidence the defensive line is not playing as well. This is the #1 defense in the country against the run and has more sacks than last year.
aspenbuck (Oct 31, 2005 3:10:35 PM)
What is the story with Grant? Seems to have come out of thin air...another Anderson Russel type (good student, good guy, new position in the denfensive backfield). This dude doesn't even have his picture on scout.
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 3:11:50 PM)
I really don't know. That is California. Maybe they were looking at him as a QB so they overlooked him as a safety.
notstudying (Oct 31, 2005 3:11:56 PM)
i see marques slow-SCUM is part of the UofM class (again).. what's going on with freddy lenix, and will he join our two solid LB verbals this year? If he does.. man we are gunna have another NASTY group in a couple years.
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 3:14:10 PM)
I just answered this question.
aspenbuck (Oct 31, 2005 3:14:21 PM)
No indication of another back? That reeks of stupidity...we have one RB in the doghouse one who may be an electric 3rd downer, and one solid RB. Add Wells to the mix and that is a decent stable...still, though, I rally think some depth there would really be great. Seems that we are moving in the direction of the I-form and I don't want to get stuck like Iowa was 2-3 years ago when thye had walk-ons starting. Thoughts?
Kirk (Oct 31, 2005 3:15:28 PM)
A couple of people have asked to contact Duane. The best thing is to either send him an ezinbox or you can e-mail him at OhiosFutureStars@columbus.rr.com
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 3:16:02 PM)
Why would another back worthy of a scholarship come this way with Wells onboard? To me that is an indicator the staff has no plans to go after another back. If they wanted another they would have told Wells to hold off in his verbal.
G (Oct 31, 2005 3:16:07 PM)
Is Purdue the most surprising team in college football? Phil Steele had them # 3 nationally coming in. In a situation like that where all your starters return on defense yet you are 100th something nationally, ho do you explain it? Coaching, or what, it defies logic.
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 3:17:36 PM)
I never was excited about Purdue. I think they were rated that high because of schedule, and they had so many players back from a good defense. Do you know a skill player from Purdue by name? We have in recent years but not this year. Overrated from the start.
pmoss (Oct 31, 2005 3:17:39 PM)
How big of a "impact" player is Small?
Duane (Oct 31, 2005 3:19:36 PM)
He is a sure impact player. I think he is a bit underrated. Unlike Ginn, Hiley and Whitner he has not touched the ball as much and while he is plenty fast he is not the stop watch breaker those players were.
