Kyle Lamb Chat Archive: Nov. 8

Kyle Lamb stopped by Tuesday evening to discuss the latest with Ohio State basketball and recruiting. A transcript is posted below.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:06:18 PM)
hello folks

Ashland (Nov 8, 2005 9:06:51 PM)
Whats up kyle

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:06:57 PM)
Not much, how's it going?

Ashland (Nov 8, 2005 9:07:15 PM)
good, thanks... what do u think our chances for KK and dallas are

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:08:04 PM)
I think Ohio State has a real good chance of getting them in the end. Just gotta be patient on this one. Neither wants to rush it, and both want to give the recruiting process its due

Ashland (Nov 8, 2005 9:08:49 PM)
i have faith in them both, but KK scares me a lil' more... say one of them does decide to go somewhere else... who do we turn our att'n to, love?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:10:28 PM)
Love, Alabi, JaJuan Johnson and Josh Southern will continue to get attention in the meantime. Koufos is every bit as strong as Dallas Lauderdale. Just a matter of giving full attention to the process.

Ashland (Nov 8, 2005 9:10:48 PM)
who would u say love is leaning toward?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:11:04 PM)
Personally, I believe North Carolina. Some say UCLA< but I don't see it

Ashland (Nov 8, 2005 9:11:18 PM)
UNC cant have many schollies for next yr.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:11:37 PM)
They certainly don't have a lot

Ashland (Nov 8, 2005 9:11:50 PM)
who do u see them going after next yr, say if they have 2 spots open...

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:12:05 PM)
Ohio State or North Carolina?

Ashland (Nov 8, 2005 9:12:10 PM)
UNC

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:12:40 PM)
They like Love a lot. I could also see them chasing another 2-guard or Wing player since Ellington and B-Wright might not be there long

Ashland (Nov 8, 2005 9:12:47 PM)
how would u compare our '06 class to theirs?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:13:18 PM)
On paper alone, I think it's better than Ohio State. Not by a lot, but that's a lot of talent at every position.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:13:20 PM)
However,

Ashland (Nov 8, 2005 9:13:41 PM)
we have more 3/4 yr guys tho

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:13:42 PM)
I also think Ohio State has the advantage of chemistry because three of their players have played for four years during AAU season, and have lost like five games TOTAL together

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:14:51 PM)
Cap, long time no see!

Jedaharris (Nov 8, 2005 9:15:38 PM)
Sylvester Mayes looked a little lost on Sunday. What are you hearing about him picking up Matta's system?

uaghetto (Nov 8, 2005 9:15:56 PM)
Kyle, do you think the starting five we saw on Sunday is likely to be that which we'll see by the Big 10 opener - or do you see someone coming on in the first 10 games or so and stepping in?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:16:35 PM)
I think he's just a little slow to catch up to some of the drills (Mayes). It's just a matter of comfort level. Remember, Lewis had a year to pick up the offense and everything. Once he clicks (and I hear there is full confidence he WILL click), look out.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:17:19 PM)
ghetto, I think that starting five is the most likely of what we will see. I could see Butler starting ahead of Foster soon, but that's probably your likely lineup

Jedaharris (Nov 8, 2005 9:17:36 PM)
Hope this hasn't already been asked. Are you worried about losing KK to Louisville?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:18:30 PM)
The only team capable (for now) of grabbing Koufos from Ohio State is probably Maryland. I hear Duke might start showing more interest on KK, but right now, Maryland is about the only other school up there with the Buckeyes. I still think this one will be hard for anyone to beat out Ohio State. It's just a matter of playing the process and giving teams they are considering a "fair" shot.

uaghetto (Nov 8, 2005 9:18:52 PM)
I noticed in the coaches poll, OSU is ranked 27th (second in the "others receiving votes") - do you think that's a fair preseason assessment of our team? More importantly, where do you see us ending up?

cap10buckeyes (Nov 8, 2005 9:18:55 PM)
Hey Kyle, great job!! When the he11 is your review???

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:19:38 PM)
ghetto, I think that's a fair assessment. When it's all said and done, I think they will be a top 20 team this season. But right now, 25 to 30 is about right

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:20:15 PM)
Cap, talk to Steve on that one, LOL. I'm always up for a raise!! Seriously though, through JJ Huddle, Ohio High and Bucknuts, they have found a lot of work for me to do and i'm very grateful.

uaghetto (Nov 8, 2005 9:20:20 PM)
any surprises tomorrow?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:20:49 PM)
Not with Ohio State. With other teams? Probably. But that's par for the course. As far as Ohio State goes... 11:15 is the time for Cook, Conley, Oden and likely Lighty as well.

cap10buckeyes (Nov 8, 2005 9:20:56 PM)
Keep up the great work!! Really enjoying your coverage.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:21:35 PM)
Thanks. We really need the support around here! The industry is changing dramatically, and we're trying to stay ahead of the curve and keep on par with what we feel we need to be doing.

Ashland (Nov 8, 2005 9:21:39 PM)
i keep seeing osu ranked 5th in the big ten... what gives?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:22:49 PM)
There's a wide-ranging opinion on Ohio State right now. I've seen them anywhere from first to seventh. I believe the Ohio State coaches think first is way too high for them right now. On the other hand, they will be very disappointed if they finish fifth or below. I think it depends on how much weight you give Lewis and Mayes as to where you rank OSU. I personally see them in the 3-5 range.

uaghetto (Nov 8, 2005 9:22:52 PM)
will Bucknuts have anyone covering the signings?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:23:58 PM)
That will be something we talk about here after this chat. The stock answer is "yes, we will have coverage of some sorts" but it's going to be a matter of how much and in what method. The pressers are going to be very, very short, so we have to weigh where we go and such. But we hope to have stringers at most locations and we'll certainly cover the heck out of it tomorrow overall.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:24:30 PM)
To add to that, i'm thinking of going to Dunbar in the morning, but I can't yet guarantee it. I know there are plans to have a lot of coverage one way or another.

Guest (Nov 8, 2005 9:24:34 PM)
Are they running any sets with JJ at the 4 ala Jason Singleton? Could he play defense against the fours? He certainly could rebound, run the baseline and score as a 4 in our offense.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:25:01 PM)
The question was asked if they are running Sullinger at the four like O'Brien did with Singleton.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:25:41 PM)
They will use Sullinger in that role sometimes. He has gotten quicker and stronger this season, and because of that, he's much more versatile. Sullinger was far and away the most intense player on the court for Ohio State on Sunday.

cap10buckeyes (Nov 8, 2005 9:25:48 PM)
Conflicting reports on Dallas Lauderdale, what is going on with his recruitment?? Pitino also makes me very nervous with KK, because once he hones in on a recruit, he is usually more successfull, than not.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:27:40 PM)
I was talking about this earlier. I don't think there's much to worry about right now from Ohio State's point of view. Both guys are very strong with Ohio State. But both want to enjoy the process and take their time. I know Koufos specifically would love to join Ohio State's 2007 recruiting class, and his mother (who is an OSU grad) wouldn't mind that whatsoever. But here thing has been, 'let's be fair to all the schools we're looking at and at least give them a fair chance.' Sure, you never know if it drags on how things might change, and they could, but right now it's more of a procedural thing.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:28:59 PM)
Cap, about one of the comments you made the other day...

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:29:08 PM)
Yes, Othello Hunter's arms ARE very long haha

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:29:49 PM)
I'm going to turn this moderation off for tonight. Not a big enough crowd to need it

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:30:21 PM)
OK, it's a free-for-all now. Try to keep the questions one at a time, but we'll make this a bit more informal

cap10buckeyes (Nov 8, 2005 9:30:55 PM)
You gotta' like having 2 Ken Johnsons in the lineup next year with Hunter & Oden. I can't wait until teams try to penetrate in the paint!!

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:31:35 PM)
It will be very tough. And what's more...with Jamar Butler, Sylvester Mayes, Mike Conley and Ron Lewis, the perimeter defense is likely to be real solid as well.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:31:57 PM)
Hunter really is the perfect compliment to Oden.

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:31:59 PM)
what about Cook and Lighty

cap10buckeyes (Nov 8, 2005 9:32:12 PM)
geez, and we have not even mentioned Cook or Lighty!!

Jedaharris (Nov 8, 2005 9:32:13 PM)
Any new news on recruiting for 2007? Anything new on Love and OSU?

cap10buckeyes (Nov 8, 2005 9:32:22 PM)
beat me to it bball.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:32:54 PM)
Cook's defense can be real good. I just am not yet sure how good it will be at the college level. He's not always real aggressive on the defensive end about getting in guys' crawls. Lighty is a good defender, but not a real in-your-face kind of guy like the others I mentioned.

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:33:02 PM)
yep, there both real solid defenders

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:33:31 PM)
Oh, no question they are good defenders. But the others are more aggressive.

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:33:47 PM)
true

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:34:01 PM)
Jeda, Not anything new on Love. Ohio State is up there with North Carolina and UCLA. However, that's not going to change a whole lot until Spring.

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:34:10 PM)
we going to be hard to score on next year

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:34:13 PM)
Everything should pick up a lot around February, March or April

cap10buckeyes (Nov 8, 2005 9:34:18 PM)
Any new names popping up on the recruiting radar screen?? It seems anticlimactic with all of the recent success.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:35:12 PM)
LOL, yeah there really hasn't been much to say. There's a few guys out there that have popped up, but when I do some digging, I find out there's just not much to tell you about them. Really, it's the same post guys you've already heard about for 2007 and then a few guards. Rakim Sanders is someone that will probably come back into play by spring

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:35:59 PM)
You never know... if things align properly, Dante Jackson might be a possibility.

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:36:04 PM)
I like Austin Freeman, but don't think we have much of a chance

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:36:15 PM)
I'm hearing he's a strong Maryland lean.

cap10buckeyes (Nov 8, 2005 9:36:28 PM)
Kyle, what can you tell us about Walter Olfutt's (sp) game?? Is he big-time?

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:36:37 PM)
he liked the NCSU visit he took

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:36:45 PM)
and will be visit Notre Dame

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:36:59 PM)
Offut is a big time athlete

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:37:01 PM)
I never got to see Offutt, but when I talk to people that have seen him, I keep hearing he's just an unebelievable leaper that can make plays to cause your jaw to drop.

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:37:15 PM)
been dunking since 6th grade

cap10buckeyes (Nov 8, 2005 9:37:21 PM)
freak!!

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:37:37 PM)
his leaps are legendary

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:37:57 PM)
Yes. The kid will be big time if he recovers fully from his injury. The good thing about the ACL (if there is such a thing), is that it doesn't usually hurt your vertical. It's more about cuts and side to side things.

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:38:04 PM)
hopefully he can get back to 100 percent

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:38:32 PM)
hopefully the same for Lighty too

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:38:49 PM)
bball, You hear anything more on Mullens' new found weight? haha

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:39:03 PM)
i haven't heard anything

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:39:06 PM)
I'm hearing Lighty is fine and then some. I think he's going to have a big time senior season.

cap10buckeyes (Nov 8, 2005 9:39:16 PM)
He must be bigtime if Matta is offering a "guard" this early. Usually you see big men sign, because there are fewer available. Major glut of Guards

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:39:18 PM)
thats hard to imagine though putting on 40 pounds or whatever it was

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:39:34 PM)
Yes, very true.

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:40:00 PM)
Offut is big time, top 15 in his class

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:40:07 PM)
real smooth player

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:40:24 PM)
only real weakness is perimeter shooting and he has alot of time to work on that

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:40:33 PM)
yes, very much so.

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:41:10 PM)
he can pretty much get to anywhere on the court that he wants to

cap10buckeyes (Nov 8, 2005 9:41:13 PM)
What were you first impressions with Sylvester Mayes (aside from being a bit lost)?

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:41:37 PM)
really fast and quick and athletic

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:41:53 PM)
He's definitely quick. Great defender too.

cap10buckeyes (Nov 8, 2005 9:42:01 PM)
biggest asset?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:42:07 PM)
I know he has real good range, although he didn't show it Sunday.

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:42:44 PM)
he is really good at getting in passing lanes

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:42:50 PM)
he had a couple steals

cap10buckeyes (Nov 8, 2005 9:43:08 PM)
any update on the unis for '06?? Kyle, you MUST ask Matta this question or I am coming into C-bus to ask Matta myself!!

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:43:30 PM)
the grey unis are supposed to come back

cap10buckeyes (Nov 8, 2005 9:43:39 PM)
I heard that as well.

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:44:10 PM)
im not sure how often they will wear them or if that would be their new home uni

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:44:22 PM)
lol, Cap I asked about it. I think I made a post about it last week. I heard they are planning to do them, but they are finalizing it.

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:44:51 PM)
isn't Mullens up to 270

Jedaharris (Nov 8, 2005 9:44:53 PM)
Question about developing areas of weakness. With rebounding being so critical (as important as 20 seconds of excellent defense, etc.) and it being a weakness, why is Michigan State so good: recruiting warriors, athletic big men, schemes, amount of time in practice, superior ability to motivate? How much can that be improved in a group of guys if they are not naturally inclined?

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:45:38 PM)
hopefully he will be able to utilize that new found strength and just dominate high school

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:46:08 PM)
jeda, it's a scheme thing. Michigan State recruits the big, strong posts, the big beefy fours and the strong athletic wings. Because of that, they are better rebounding. Matta likes to have athletes that can shoot and penetrate, so he won't necessarily get those same types. However, with the increased athleticism the next couple of years, the rebounding will be much better.

cap10buckeyes (Nov 8, 2005 9:46:28 PM)
What in the heck is going on with Michigan recruiting??? Amaker is really whiffing...no Jackson, Herzog, et al. Only Simms & K'len.

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:46:51 PM)
rebounding might not be much better this year but should be alot better in years to come

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:47:11 PM)
Only Simms lol

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:47:16 PM)
he is pretty good

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:47:22 PM)
Cap, Michigan is going to have a real solid class in 2007 though. They are in great shape for Alex Legion and Kalin Lucas. I think they'll turn it around up there. Jackson was a case they were supposed to have him in March and it kept getting delayed. They were probably tired of waiting.

cap10buckeyes (Nov 8, 2005 9:47:53 PM)
Is Jackson a USC lean?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:48:05 PM)
he committed to Notre Dame a while back

cap10buckeyes (Nov 8, 2005 9:48:40 PM)
Didn't realize this. Doesn't seem like a great fit.

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:48:44 PM)
Michigan is sitting pretty good with Dar Tucker also

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:48:53 PM)
I think he'll fit well with Notre Dame

cap10buckeyes (Nov 8, 2005 9:49:02 PM)
Tells you what the heck I know

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:49:11 PM)
lol

cap10buckeyes (Nov 8, 2005 9:49:37 PM)
Recruiting is getting to cushy in Ohio State land!!!!

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:50:11 PM)
A little too much haha

Jedaharris (Nov 8, 2005 9:51:04 PM)
I talked to one of the summer league players and he said JJ was making all of his foul shots this summer. Have you heard any thing about how the team is doing with this, and have you heard any thing about team chemistry, any problem areas?

cap10buckeyes (Nov 8, 2005 9:51:33 PM)
jeda , I believe he missed a few during the Findlay game

Jedaharris (Nov 8, 2005 9:52:02 PM)
Yes, I saw him miss at least 2.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:52:54 PM)
The chemistry is real good. Foul shooting should be OK this year. I think Lewis and Mayes will be 78 to 82 percent guys from the line (which says a lot since they will get to the line often)

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:53:07 PM)
i don't think he will ever be agood free throw shooter, no form

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:53:13 PM)
Foster and Butler obviously are good from the line. So add it all up, and that will be A-OK

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:53:33 PM)
I agree on Sullinger... but his form looked a lot better the other day. Moreso than last year

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:54:07 PM)
even better than over the summer

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:54:21 PM)
his form is still poor :)

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:54:25 PM)
Very true

cap10buckeyes (Nov 8, 2005 9:54:29 PM)
You mean, it doesn't look like he is throwing a medicine ball??

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:55:09 PM)
i think Mayes and Lewis are going to have more free throw attemps than some teams lol

cap10buckeyes (Nov 8, 2005 9:55:57 PM)
I gotta run guys. Keep up the great work Kyle!!

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:56:03 PM)
man im pumped for tommorow morning

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:56:07 PM)
later cap

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:56:51 PM)
Take Care Cap!

Jedaharris (Nov 8, 2005 9:57:16 PM)
A question about the players and any response to the fans during the game. During the Ashland game the point guard (#10) was torching us in the first half with assists and his points. It started out the same way in the second half, and I started to yell at our guards to pressure him and get him off the ball. They actually seemed to respond immediately to my hollaring and moved up on them. Of course I'm sure the coaches were on them as well!! But my question, can the players hear enough from fans that it affects their play?

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:57:20 PM)
not much of a turnout tonight huh

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 9:58:04 PM)
Dustin Pfiefer is really good, I like him alot, if he was taller he would be playing on just about any D1 team

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:58:06 PM)
I am sure at certain times they can hear the type of reactions they are getting. You're right though, as far as the defensive pressure, that was something that Matta was also hollering about.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 9:58:40 PM)
You saw the results of their pressure. When they stepped it up, they got a lot of points off of it.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 10:00:34 PM)
well folks, I need to be going

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 10:00:42 PM)
later Kyle

bballbucks (Nov 8, 2005 10:00:48 PM)
have a good night man

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 8, 2005 10:01:02 PM)
seeya guys

Jedaharris (Nov 8, 2005 10:01:28 PM)
Take care. Much appreciated!!
