Housteau Chat Archive: Nov. 11

Gary Housteau stopped by chat today to talk some football and recruiting. We have a transcript posted below.

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 11:12:58 AM)
Good morning everyone. There's a great week in store for all of Ohio football fans this week. The high school playoffs, Ohio State and Northwestern and then Cleveland and Pittsburgh on Sunday night. That's how it looks from my perspective. I had a great night celebrating Ted Ginn Sr.'s 50th birthday party last night in Cleveland. It was so great to see the Ohio State players speak with such class. What's on your mind this morning. Let's chat shall we?

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 11:15:07 AM)
Shortly after my chat today I'm leaving for Cincinnati to watch Jake Ballard's Springboro team take on Miles Schlichter's Miami Trace team at Princeton High School. Say hello if you see me in my Bucknuts.com shirt. I'll probly have a couple of cameras with me so I'm easy to spot. Where's your game tonight?

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 11:17:14 AM)
Chris Wells will be going to the Tallmadge-Copley rematch tonight and then he will be at the Northwestern game tomorrow, unofficially, to see Northwestern and OSU. Tallmadge handled Copley pretty easily the first game. I was there. They held Delone Carter to 38 yards on the night. Copley is too one-dimensional and it doesn't work against a really good team like Tallmadge. Tallmadge was team at the beginning of the season to win D-II. I'm anxious to see how Springboro compares to them. I'll find out tonight.

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 11:20:01 AM)
Last week I took some grief for two of my state title picks losing and that's all good. But for the record, Benedictine was a preseason pick of mine and I stuck with them all year despite the 4-5 record in the regular season. They played a great scheduled and I thought even though they backed into the post season, they've won 14 of 15 playoffs games in the past three years, so I figured they had a really good chance to do it again if they got there. Lake Catholic has a nice team and they play my Youngstown Liberty team tonight, the undefeated Leopards, and it should be a good game.

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 11:22:40 AM)
Versailles was my D-V pick, and they were beaten by a team with a neat story of their own. The head coach there won the state title with Columbus Grove two seasons agon and he's turned the program around over night. I thought Versailles had a really good team. They lost to Mooney in the finals of D-IV last year and they dropped down a division. I thought they were close to a lock in D-V. Didn't happen.

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 11:24:13 AM)
For the record, I'm still going with Glenville, the best group of talent I've seen maybe ever, Tallmadge, Coldwater over Mooney this year, Derrell Johnson is no longer injured but he's just plain sick (that's a good thing for the older crowd) and Dola Hardin Northern...why not?

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 11:24:36 AM)
Enough with my diatribe...any questions? Fire away!

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 11:25:04 AM)
Am I in the right chat room or am I talking with myself? Smile!

expresblfc (Nov 11, 2005 11:29:33 AM)
hey gary.. have you seen joe morgan.. does he really have a shot at an offer

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 11:29:33 AM)
Hi expressblfc and thanks for the first question today. Yes I've seen Joe Morgan run track and I've seen him on the football field. I would think he didn't have his best game of his career against Massillon because he dropped a few catchable balls in that contest. It's not fair to judge him on that one game however, I don't see Ohio State going at him in the end. In addition to Small and Chichester, I have to keep a ship open for Derrell Johnson in case he gets it done in time academically. Johnson is just flat out too talented. Morgan is a gifted talent but I don't see him at OSU next year.

redondo (Nov 11, 2005 11:31:50 AM)
Hi Gary - Pete Carroll seems to ahve cornered the market on the "we just have fun out there" and "freshmen play early here" markets. What do you think JT et. al. should do to counter that? Or, should they?

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 11:31:50 AM)
Hi redondo...JT is the master of the soft cell approach. He truly believes Ohio State speaks for itself...and it does in a way obviously. That might play with born and bread Ohio kids but I'm not sure theres a lot of national appeal in that approach. I think with ND and Pete Carroll being so aggressive these days, OSU better not rest on their laurels any longer. And I'm not saying they are. They just need to stoke it up just a notch to take on these new players.

expresblfc (Nov 11, 2005 11:32:55 AM)
same with darrel johnson.. any realistic way to get him in this class

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 11:32:55 AM)
I think that's up to Johnson at this point expresblfc. Ray Small and Derrell Johnson are probably the two most exciting players in the state.

JohnnyBuckeye (Nov 11, 2005 11:36:20 AM)
Who do you see getting on the field first for OSU? Homan or Lenix? And if Lenix, at what position?

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 11:36:20 AM)
Hi JohnnyBuckeye...Wow...I think Homan is a great tackler first and foremost. That may be the only edge, and it's a slight one, for Homan. Both are ball hawking LBs. I'm guessing Lenix may have a slight edge in speed. Do you prefer filet mignon or a big fat porter house? I was in the company of many Glenville people last night, no players, and nothing seems to have changed with Freddie's status. He's trying to get it done academically at this time to become eligible. No good or bad reports as it currently stands. I will give him a call this coming week.

expresblfc (Nov 11, 2005 11:37:29 AM)
have you heard anything regarding from your Glenville connections regarding whether Lenix has any shot at getting in the winter?

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 11:37:29 AM)
See above question. Everyone seems to believe he just needs to take care of his academics and at some point, either the winter or spring, they are expecting to see him become eligible.

redondo (Nov 11, 2005 11:39:53 AM)
Hi Gary - Now that the private jets have been outlawed for recruiting, how are the travel arrangements made for recruits. Do the schools make all the arrangements and mail airline tix where a flight comes into play?

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 11:39:53 AM)
From what I know, the school pays for the flight for just the player. I'm sure everything is done electronically with the tickets these days. For instance when Wells went to USC, his ticket was on their dime, but if his mom or dad went, they had to pay their own way there. George Brown, when he was taking Aaron everywhere, was paid for the mileage on each of his sons trips.

osufan26 (Nov 11, 2005 11:42:18 AM)
Gary, any new updates on Thad Gibson, jeff cumberland and fred lenix?

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 11:42:18 AM)
All academic concerns. Nothing new to report.

Snod24 (Nov 11, 2005 11:44:15 AM)
Sorry if been asked what is the % of AJ Wallace wearing S&G next season ? Love the work you guys do

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 11:44:16 AM)
Hi snod24...I sure had the impression early on that Ohio State would be the team. I think his unofficial visit to OSU this summer left an indelibel impression on him. Time will only tell us if that's the case. I would have to say there's good chance but I haven't followed up on him in a while. Better than half I would say but that's a conservative estimate.

osufan26 (Nov 11, 2005 11:46:40 AM)
Do you think ohio state has legit interest in morgan williams at RB?

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 11:46:40 AM)
Sure he has to be considered top RB prospect next year with Danny Herron, Jordan Mabin and Hosea Simpson. I even like William Johnson a lot as a sleeper. Mabin was really impressive in person but doesn't have the ideal physical dimensions. Neither does Herron.

ToledoBucknutty (Nov 11, 2005 11:49:07 AM)
What's up Gary? You're the man, thanks! Do you think eventually we just overpower and overcome NW with our better athleticism?

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 11:49:07 AM)
You got it ToledoBucknutty. If there's a rout on later in the game I plan to sneak away to go to the Glenville game at Cleveland Browns stadium. But I'm not counting on it. I'm looking forward to OSU playing really well on Senior Day and I'm looking forward to seeing Tyrell Sutton before the game. I'll take a victory, even if it's by a point but after watching them play Michigan a few weeks ago...I don't think OSU will have any problem with them. If the game is close I will remain in Ohio Stadium no question.

osufan26 (Nov 11, 2005 11:54:06 AM)
I know your close with Ted Ginn Sr...What juniors should we look for next year at G-ville? I hear Jermale Hinds is favoring florida right now.. Is that true also?

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 11:54:06 AM)
Jermale Hines is one of my top juniors for next year already. He's a ridiculously talented kid who could actually be their QB next year. There's a lot of good juniors this year and he's one of them. Could play safety or LB but when he's done growing he'll likely be a linebacker at the next level. Kyle Jefferson as a ton of speed and great size as a wideout and even a big cornerback or defensive back, but he's had an underachieving season. He's picked it up some toward the end of the year but he can be dominant with hard work. Those are the two main guys right now. They have some good young talent and of course you never know just who may transfer in after this year. Jermale Hines might like florida but what can I say. They have OSU on the brain at Glenville. If OSU wants him, and they will, they will get him.

osufan26 (Nov 11, 2005 11:54:32 AM)
Is Mark Johnson gonna ever set up an official to osu?

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 11:54:32 AM)
Not tracking him at all sorry osufan26.

txBuckeye (Nov 11, 2005 11:58:41 AM)
Just ignore if it has already been asked, since I'm late to the chat. What's your feeling on Ben Martin? Top 5 player next year? It looks like we will be in a dog fight with ND for his services. Have you talked with him and if so does OSU have a good shot?

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 11:58:41 AM)
Hi txBuckeye, Ben Martin may indeed my top senior next year. Stud. He was at the game last week against Illinois and that's at least the second game I've seen him and spoken briefly with him...to say hi etc. Yeah I do seeing it being a two-horse race at this time although he's not ruling out any other suitors at this time. He likes both schools, I can tell you that. I've made an effort to get to know Ben Martin and I hope to stay in touch with him on a regular basis. 50-50 is a legimate ratio right now.

Guest (Nov 11, 2005 12:01:06 PM)
Hey Gary, any word on how we're doing recruiting PA this year? Specifically, Wes Lyons?

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 12:01:06 PM)
nomorecoop asks about Lyons and other PA recruits...I do know the staff still is interested in Wes Lyons and he still is interested in OSU. I'm not as optimistic as I once was with Lyons but I think they still have a shot with him. How is Chichester, Small, Wes Lyons and Derrell Johnson as a receiving corps. Ridiculous! Nothing else to report on any other PA recruits at this time.

MacAuley (Nov 11, 2005 12:03:14 PM)
Any chance of landing Joe Thomas? What is the cuurent plan for O-Linemen?

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 12:03:14 PM)
Hi MacAuley...I just don't see it happening with Joe T. but OSU is still working on it. I do not know the plan for the O-line at this time. They must still think they can turn Thomas around. That would be a major acquisition in my opinion.

osufan26 (Nov 11, 2005 12:04:37 PM)
Who is the fastest rising prospect in the junior class?

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 12:04:37 PM)
I would have to say Morgan Williams possibly or the two kids from down at Dover who play pitch and catch together. Can someone help me with their names? Big, huge numbers. I think they're juniors. Correct me if I'm wrong.

osufan26 (Nov 11, 2005 12:06:18 PM)
Thanks Gary...Your always up for answering all my questions..I have two more questions..What ever happen to Steve Hight at Mckinley and Jakeem waters at canton south..They both have dissapeared...

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 12:06:18 PM)
Hi osufan26, I'm not a stark county expert like Bill but I do believe both had academic issues for this year and they both may be ineligible? I'm not certain of that but I believe that to be the case. I really like Waters a lot when I saw him in person. I hope he recovers.

mulder (Nov 11, 2005 12:08:38 PM)
Who do you like in the Colerain vs. St. X game?

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 12:08:38 PM)
Colerain. In fact, Colerain might beat them by a couple TDs. Do you know anybody else who would make such a bold statement like that? I've said all season long that Colerain and Glenville are the two most talented teams in the state and I expect to see them play in week 15. And yes I know X beat Colerain in week one. I was at the game. And if you haven't heard me say this before...Glenville is really good!

Beavercreek58Buck (Nov 11, 2005 12:10:16 PM)
Hi Gary! Any updates on the Fla kids? Sorry if you just haven't got to it earlier but I have a feeling I'm sendin my ?s somewhere into cyber space!

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 12:10:16 PM)
Not my expertise Beavercreek58Buck....I ususally just read about them on this site like you do. Thanks for your question, I appreciate it. There's just a handful of them that I haven't gotten to yet. Keep them coming! Smile!

osufan26 (Nov 11, 2005 12:10:53 PM)
I believe your thinking of Dan Ifft and Percy Gardner at Dover...

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 12:10:53 PM)
Bingo...thanks osufan26!

Snod24 (Nov 11, 2005 12:14:05 PM)
Gary, What are your thoughts on Chris Smith Jr QB from south point legit? My high school team plays them next season cannot wait to see this kid play

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 12:14:05 PM)
I like Chris Smith a lot. Him, Gardner, the kid at Northmont and Charles Baab are four guys in Ohio that I'm excited about at this time. Smith is a bigger, stronger kid with a nice arm is pretty mobile for his size. I watched him throw at a combine in Akron and I liked him a lot. I like all four of these guys who are a bit unique in their own way. But Smith is definitely a guy to keep an eye on.

Snod24 (Nov 11, 2005 12:15:11 PM)
Any D Ausberry updates feel it will be hard to lure him to the Midwest but would be a great get

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 12:15:11 PM)
It would be great Snod indeed but I just dont have a real good feel about him at this time.

Guest (Nov 11, 2005 12:18:29 PM)
Gary, So much was made of Kyle Mitchum can you give the room an insight to his progression and will he be able to crack the starting lineup next season ? Also any update on how D Hiley is dong?

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 12:18:29 PM)
Snod 24 asks about Kyle Mitchum and all that I can say about that is that I'm really glad OSU has a player like him in the pipeline. Give him time and you will see him playing on Saturdays in Ohio Stadium. Ohio State may be getting to the point, talentwise on the line, that unless you're a Boone type you may have to sit two or three years before you get your chance. That's good for the team but not as good for the individual. I will say however, Ihave extremely high expectations for Connor Smith at OSU. Nothing new to report on Superman. To think that Ginn Sr. was higher on Hiley than any of his players at one time is just so disappointing that he couldn't get it done at OSU.

Beavercreek58Buck (Nov 11, 2005 12:20:43 PM)
Hi Gary! I got in late but I was wondering if you have any news on the Fla kids? Also, does OSU ever recruit kids that they think in the back of their minds the kid might only play special teams for OSU but will be great at it. (Sorry if this went through earlier)

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 12:20:43 PM)
I will say this Beavercreek58...I was pretty impressed with McCarthy when I saw him at Ohio State. I'm sure Florida kids may play a big part in filling up this 2006 recruiting class when it's all said and done because there just doesn't seem to be too many Ohio guys out there with a legitimate shot.

osufan26 (Nov 11, 2005 12:23:13 PM)
Are there any 0-linemen emerging for next year yet?

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 12:23:13 PM)
Yes, watch for the name Nick Schepis, I first noticed him at the Garfield Walsh game and it was good to see him at the Illinois game. He and his dad have been to games before but this was his first time there on an unofficial vist. He can be a good one.

Beavercreek58Buck (Nov 11, 2005 12:27:21 PM)
Considering nothing is guarenteed about OL recruiting, how does the OLs in OH look next year and how interested are the ones u know about in OSU?

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 12:27:21 PM)
I just mentioned Schepis and he's very interested in Ohio State. I'm keeping my eye on a kid at Hubbard by the name of Marcus O'hara and they all love OSU at that school. Nathan Sharp from West Branch is another guy to keep an eye on early. I liked Garrett Celek at La Salle when I saw him early in the season. Those are some early names I'll be looking at. There are others I'm sure but that's some of the names that come to mind right now.

osufan26 (Nov 11, 2005 12:29:22 PM)
Any new guys popping up on osu's radar right now?

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 12:29:22 PM)
Bryan Wright isn't exactly a new name, the kicker from Salem, but he did attend OSU's game last week and he will be going to the Michigan game on Saturday against Indiana. He has an offer from Bowling Green already and he just got one from Cincinnati this week. He's got a big leg but I don't think OSU is looking for another kicker.

Snod24 (Nov 11, 2005 12:33:39 PM)
Any news on Louis I or Ira G any chance they make it back to Ohio State or has that decision been made because of their poor decisons ?

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 12:33:40 PM)
Louis is at YSU and I have no knowledge of Ira Guilford at this time. I just hope Louis can make things happen in his two years at YSU on the gridiron ahead of him. I haven't spoken with him in a while. YSU has a chance to make the playoffs for the first time since JT left if they can beat Western Kentucky at home this week. The game, in effect, is a playoff game cause if they win they likely get in at 8-3. The program has dropped off so much since JT left! JT is a winner! Bottom line. And his team's, for the most part, always peak in November and we're seeing that with this OSU team in front of our eyes. I just wish they wouldn't take so long to get there some times.

GaryHousteau (Nov 11, 2005 12:35:58 PM)
That will do it for me for today. I'll be traveling down I-71 soon to see Springboro and Miami Trace. I'm really looking forward to it. I'm a big fan of Miles Schlichter and I'm glad I get to see him play in high school. Schlichter is a great kid. I'm looking forward to seeing big Jake Ballard tonight as well. Should be a great weekend of football. Go Bucks!
