Conley Chat: Nov. 21 Archive

Here are excerpts from Bill Conley's Chat session for subscribers on Monday. Coach Conley looked back at OSU's win over Michigan and discussed possible bowl match-ups and how things look at various spots for 2006. Click here for more.

TheMinnesotaBuckeye (Nov 21, 2005 1:08:04 PM)
The o-line play seemed very crisp Saturday. What did you observe?

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:09:16 PM)
I think the offensive line play has improved tremendously, probably starting with the Minnesota game. I really liked the play of Alex Boone and the tight end play of Marcel Frost the last few games. Those guys should help them a lot next year. Also, Nick Mangold has taken his game up to the next level.

redondo (Nov 21, 2005 1:09:26 PM)
Hi Coach Conley - Does this win over UM and the run Cosch Treesel has put together in the series with Michigan provide any meaningful impetus to recruiting for this year, or next? Thank you.

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:10:14 PM)
I think it's very important in the Midwest in terms of recruiting since OSU and Michigan go head to head for so many of the great players in the area. It's a huge plus for the Buckeyes -- if the staff follows up on it.

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:10:19 PM)
A reminder ...

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:10:43 PM)
This is a moderated Chat. All of the questions come to us and we post them as we get to them (that's why you don't see them live.)

ToledoBucknutty (Nov 21, 2005 1:10:51 PM)
Good afternoon Bill!!

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:11:06 PM)
It's a great Monday morning for all Buckeyes!!

buckeye59 (Nov 21, 2005 1:11:09 PM)
Bill, Thanks for chatting. You had to love the block by Stan White Jr. yesterday. It was really great to see a kid that busts his butt come through in the clutch.

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:12:32 PM)
Stan White Jr., like Stan White Sr., is a tough, gritty football player. He's going to give great effort every play and he's not going to make mental mistakes. To see him level two Michigan defenders on that play will go down as one of the best blocks in history in the Ohio State-Michigan series.

Ox (Nov 21, 2005 1:12:42 PM)
Bill, what is the story behind what happened with Nick Goings at OSU? He has turned out a decent NFL career.

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:14:10 PM)
He found himself in a depth chart situation with Michael Wiley and Pepe Pearson. He was kind of a 'tweener in relation with being a tailback or fullback. If he had a little more patience, he could have had a great career. Even when he went to Pittsburgh, he found himself getting limited playing time and then got hurt. But Nicky Goings is an outstanding talent. It does not surprise me he is having an outstanding NFL career.

boulderbuck1 (Nov 21, 2005 1:14:23 PM)
coach, ND was first to offer ben martin, what are our chances?

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:15:45 PM)
I think Notre Dame because of their success this season and a renewed emphasis on Midwest recruiting as opposed to the West Coast recruiting under Willingham will make them an equal if not more dangerous recruiting opponent. Right now it is a definite toss-up with the Martin kid.

redondo (Nov 21, 2005 1:15:53 PM)
Hi Coach Conley - I understand your book is coming out. For those of us in remote locations (out of state), where can we go to find it?

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:16:24 PM)
The book has been out for just over a week. Sales have been super. Just go to my web site, or Atlas Books to order.

TheMinnesotaBuckeye (Nov 21, 2005 1:16:38 PM)
Here's something I've always been curious about. The players who don't travel for a road game; for a game like UM, do they gather together somewhere to watch it? (Is making the traveling squad a big motivator, especially for younger guys?)

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:17:31 PM)
To go without saying, making the traveling squad is huge. The guys who don't make the travel squad do not have one certain site. They cluster in small groups, often by position, at one of the player's homes or apartments to watch the road games.

ToledoBucknutty (Nov 21, 2005 1:17:44 PM)
Coach.....Was it a surprise at all to you that J.L. was the one to replace Bobby? I have heard nothing but great things about the kid, but.......

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:18:54 PM)
The second half of the season, Laurinaitis has really earned the spot. With the injury to Marcus Freeman and the limited play of Mike D'Andrea, it was apparent that Laurinaitis was going to be the replacement for Bobby. It seemed like he did an admirable job.

ToledoBucknutty (Nov 21, 2005 1:19:01 PM)
Speaking of that, is there any word on Bobby's ankle yet?

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:19:27 PM)
The initial report was a broken fibula and he'll probably miss the bowl game.

redondo (Nov 21, 2005 1:19:40 PM)
Hi Coach Conley - Could you outline for us please the what transpires in recruiting between now and the bowl game? Also, is text messaging a key tool used by the staff these days in recruiting? Thank you.

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:21:45 PM)
To answer the latter part, text messenging is indeed used a lot today. You are limited in that you can't use instant messenger at will. It counts as a phone call, which is limited to 1 a week up until Dec. 1. Right now, the coaches, this week, will be planning their strategy for the first home visits, which will take place in a couple of weeks because they are limited to 7 coaches on the road at 1 time. ...

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:22:08 PM)
The staff is also trying to lock in official visits for the first 2 weekends in December, if they haven't done that already.

Fiesta or Bust (Nov 21, 2005 1:22:55 PM)
Bill - Should I book my tickets to the Fiesta Bowl now?

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:23:24 PM)
I would say about a 65 percent chance be an Ohio State-Notre Dame match-up. If that doesn't happen, plan on spending the New Years' in Florida.

TheMinnesotaBuckeye (Nov 21, 2005 1:23:36 PM)
What does the staff want to accomplish in the next month or so, in terms of recruiting, player development for next year, and for bowl preparation?

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:25:01 PM)
All of the above. It is a scheduling nightmare trying to accomplish all 3 of those tasks. You have to set recruiting travels. You have to make bowl practice plans. Players have to make sure they do a good job on their finals. They have to decide which players are going to make the trip with next year in mind as you make all of these preparations.

Fiesta or Bust (Nov 21, 2005 1:25:38 PM)
What are your thoughts on Joe Thomas? Do we still have a chance. I heard that he dominated Robert Rose in the playoff game.

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:26:18 PM)
I think Joe Thomas will get a second look by the Buckeyes. He had a very good senior year. I don't know how much contact they have had with him, however. But the Michigan game had to at least draw his attention.

buckeye eddie (Nov 21, 2005 1:26:28 PM)
Bill why haven't we seen Eric Haw get "any" carries?how do you think Laurinitis did Saturday?

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:27:40 PM)
Right now, Haw is third at tailback. In the Michigan game, you're lucky to play if you're a second-team player unless there is an injury. For Erik (and Maurice Wells), the bowl practice will be huge. As I mentioned on Laurinaitis, he was a steady and reliable player when he got in there Sat.

ToledoBucknutty (Nov 21, 2005 1:28:01 PM)
Kind of disappointing on punt returns, yes, but I think that TGII had his best, albeit maybe least spectacular game at receiver. Maybe he can change a game without the home run every time and be a good solid possession type after all!

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:29:05 PM)
I think Teddy Ginn has to be on the field because of his ability to make a big play every time he catches the ball. He seems to be getting better at his pass routes. I would like to see them use him more on the jailbreak screen in the red zone. He's got to have better concentration on punt returns. He is definitely taking his eye off the football.

redondo (Nov 21, 2005 1:29:25 PM)
Hi Coach Conley - Is there one (or more) HS Sr.(s) out there that have really come on this season that has been below the radar that would either become a Buckeye or strongly consider becoming a Buckeye that you think the staff should turn up the efforts on? If so, who? Thank you.

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:32:28 PM)
I think the kids from Glenville will come to Ohio State because of the success that Troy and Ted and Donte, etc. have had. Plus, I understand that the Glenville staff is not real happy with the Michigan situation. But the area of concern is to replace Josh Huston. I understand the coaches like Aaron Pettrey from Russell, Ky. The two high school kids that I know have had great senior years are Brian Wright from Salem (who was invited to the Michigan game by Michigan) and the punter/place kicker from Dublin Scioto (I would recruit him as a punter). He has a strong leg and could be a kickoff man ...

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:32:51 PM)
I also think OSU is in good shape on the DL from Indiana, Dexter Larimore.

buckeye59 (Nov 21, 2005 1:33:07 PM)
Bill, When you're trying to close the deal with 18 year old kids, shouldn't we expand our opportunities, and try to have more options when we face a situation like McCoy last year.

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:33:48 PM)
You always have to recruit six players for every spot you have. That's how the odds fall when you recruit great players. For example, if you need 2 LBs, you better have 10 to 12 on the board.

redondo (Nov 21, 2005 1:34:03 PM)
Hi Coach Conley - After the unfortunate occurence befalling Mo Wells, what, where, when and how does the staff circle back around on him and get him ready for the next game? Does Coach Tressel get involved personally in such a situation? Thank you.

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:35:40 PM)
I think the only time that a mistake like that would be criticized heavily by the staff would be if it's an regular occurrence. It would shock me if there was anything done in relation to his spot on the depth chart because of it. But it can't continue to happen. We did definitely dodge a couple of bullets by putting the ball on the ground.

Fiesta or Bust (Nov 21, 2005 1:35:50 PM)
Can we expect to see LLLLloyd again next year? If the position becomes available, hopefully that would not be an option for you.

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:36:31 PM)
I think Jim Hermann, the defensive coordinator, is the guy who will catch the heat. He's been on the hot seat there anyway. As for me, I wouldn't even drive a blue car.

Guest (Nov 21, 2005 1:36:40 PM)
How is Hoobler progressing?

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:36:54 PM)
BeenThere 77 asks about Chad Hoobler ...

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:37:24 PM)
I think Chad Hoobler has proven his athletic ability on special teams. He should be one of the leading candidates to replace the 3 graduating LBs.

Seabus (Nov 21, 2005 1:37:46 PM)
Bill, first of all, wow, what a game!!!! I was right behind the OSU bench and it was fascinating to see the interactions between the players and staff. What did you try to do to be productive when the offense was on the sidelines??

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:39:28 PM)
I've been both places. What you try to do, there is a direct line of communications between the staff in the box and sideline. You try to communicate what defensive fronts were run in the series that the offense last on the field. You review blocking assignments, especially if they were doing something you didn't expect. Sometimes, it also just reinforcing the confidence you have in the players.

Anotherbuck (Nov 21, 2005 1:39:37 PM)
Bill, without Carpenter, the pass rushing was pretty weak against Michigan. Are there things the coaches could do between now and the bowl game to improve the pass rushing?

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:40:52 PM)
You continually try to work on techniques. That's part of every practice. The biggest thing you miss with Bobby Carpenter as a pass rusher is his athleticism. He could beat a tackle on the outside or underneath. That's tough to find a guy with those type of abilities. But they've got a month to give some young guys a good look.

mansfieldbuckeye (Nov 21, 2005 1:40:58 PM)
Thanks Bill for the Chat, what's your take on OSU's bowl picture?

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:41:24 PM)
Probably Fiesta. If not, we'll be in Fla. playing an SEC opponent in Orlando or maybe Virginia Tech at the Orange.

ToledoBucknutty (Nov 21, 2005 1:41:31 PM)
Just out of curiosity, who gets your Heisman vote? 513 all-purpose yards! That guy is ridiculous!!

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:42:33 PM)
Going into this past weekend, it was a dead heat in my mind between Vince Young and Reggie Bush. After this weekend, no doubt Reggie Bush one, Young two, Brady Quinn three, Matt Leinhart four, Michael Robinson five. That's how I see it.

militarybuck2 (Nov 21, 2005 1:42:42 PM)
who are must gets next year from ohio

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:43:30 PM)
Chris Wells, we already have. The two main kids from Glenville, who they will probably get. It hurt not getting Aaron Brown.

LLLLoyd (Nov 21, 2005 1:43:38 PM)
Bill, what is it like to Beat Michigan?

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:44:02 PM)
The only thing better is beating Michigan twice.

buckgrad (Nov 21, 2005 1:45:36 PM)
Bill, late to the chat, what a great game!! I felt bad for Carpenter, he didnt deserve to get hurt like that being a senior. What is the time table for an injury like that? Think that hurts his draft status, I hope a bone fracture doesnt cost him millions. Thanks

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:46:10 PM)
He'll probably miss the bowl game, but should have no effect on his draft status. He doesn't have a serious injury history. Bobby is still a first rounder in my mind.

ToledoBucknutty (Nov 21, 2005 1:46:21 PM)
I'd like to give kudos to ALL of the guys in the trenches on Saturday. 32 yards on 24 carries! The OL did a great job for Troy too!

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:46:59 PM)
I think both lines and both sides of the ball played their best game of the year. Even Andree Tyree who had seen little action his entire career played outstanding as a blocking tight end.

boulderbuck1 (Nov 21, 2005 1:47:11 PM)
coach, who do you think we fill the remaining spots of this class with? Thanks

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:48:00 PM)
It's way too early to speculate. There are too many spots. Too many crucial positions to fill in almost every position group. One of the big questions is if there is a need to recruit another QB is Justin decides to transfer.

TheMinnesotaBuckeye (Nov 21, 2005 1:48:10 PM)
What's your reaction to the growth that Troy Smith has shown this season at QB? How high is his ceiling, if he continues to work hard at everything?

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:48:44 PM)
If Troy continues to improve as much this season as he did this year from the Texas game on, he could be a potential early second round pick next year.

buckgrad (Nov 21, 2005 1:48:54 PM)
Bill, how much momentum does a win like this give JT in recruiting? Will they use his 4-1 record as a selling point?

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:49:36 PM)
Most definitely. The victory over Michigan needs to be fostered. There will be a special release to all of the recruits as early as today on the game.

ToledoBucknutty (Nov 21, 2005 1:49:53 PM)
Do you think we have a great shot at Larimore? It seems to me, if all else is equal and he has yet to visit, we should be in the driver's seat. He has said he wants to play in a great d-system. It's tough to argue with this D.

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:50:26 PM)
He always kind of wanted to go to Michigan, but they have been slow playing him. The Ohio State victory at Michigan with him there should have helped out the Buckeyes.

rbuck (Nov 21, 2005 1:50:36 PM)
Coach, I know D'Andrea has been hobbled all year. Do you see him going in place of Carpenter in the Bowl game? It just seems that he would bring more versatility and experience than Animal??

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:50:57 PM)
D'Andrea hasn't been suited up these last 2 games. I would not count on him playing in the bowl game.

Fiesta or Bust (Nov 21, 2005 1:51:14 PM)
How do you think this team matches up with ND? If we can find a way to eliminate turnovers, I think that the Buckeyes would dominate. JT seems to be at his best in big games, and this would be the biggest game outside of the Rose Bowl. Weiss may be known as a great "game planner", but the gap in talent seems huge to me. Thanks!

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:51:55 PM)
I think you are right on. The key in the game will be the play of the Ohio State secondary against Brady Quinn and his receivers. Ohio State definitely has the superior talent overall.

redondo (Nov 21, 2005 1:52:16 PM)
Hi Coach Conley - I have found your analyses and prognostications to be on the mark and objective (I believe, for example, you said the Buckeyes by about a field goal in last Saturday's game). Could you give us your take on what would happen on a neutral field bowl game first with the Buckeyes and USC and then a re-match with Texas, please? Who wuold win and why? Thank you.

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:53:16 PM)
I think Ohio State could beat Southern Cal by 10 points because the USC defense is extremely questionable. As far as Texas is concerned, I think that would be another close game, probably 3 points or less, either way.

Ox (Nov 21, 2005 1:54:07 PM)
Do former Buckeyes who are coaching HS football in Florida (like Keith Byars and Cris Carter) help recruit kids to Columbus? Or are they in constant contact with the coaches at least?

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:54:29 PM)
I can promise you that if there is somebody good enough on their team, they let the Ohio State staff know about it.

eobuck (Nov 21, 2005 1:54:37 PM)
Is AJ Wallace is a good chance for the Buckeyes, or is he losing interest in OSU?

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:55:24 PM)
He made an official visit, so you know he is interested. The problem is that the longer the time span between an official visit and when someone decides is crucial. Sometimes you can visit a recruit too early. The glamour wears off.

Seabus (Nov 21, 2005 1:55:39 PM)
Coach you talk about getting the coaches trying to decide which players to take to the bowl game with an eye towards next year. How does the staff generally set up this bowl prep period so some of the younger players have more opportunities?? Who do you see stepping up along the DL?

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:57:05 PM)
I think you have Lawrence Wilson, Doug Worthington, Alex Barrow, Vernon Gholston on the DL. The way these guys get extra practice time is by the staff letting the starters leave practice to watch film and keeping the young guys out later and working with them an extra half hour for each bowl practice in Columbus.

eobuck (Nov 21, 2005 1:57:17 PM)
Wouldn't it just be dreadful for Matt Leinhart to win another Heisman? Archie is and should always be the only one to win two Heismans!

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:57:52 PM)
Matt Leinhart isn't even the best player on his team. It would be a travesty if he was given the Heisman because he didn't earn it.

Fiesta or Bust (Nov 21, 2005 1:57:59 PM)
Where does this victory rank on your all-time list? It's certainly the greatest comeback that I have ever seen in the rivalry.

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 1:58:47 PM)
I think this goes right along with the 1987 victory, Earle Bruce's last game, as the 2 top Michigan victories in Ann Arbor in modern Ohio State history, modern meaning in the last 40 years.

buckgrad (Nov 21, 2005 1:59:01 PM)
Bill, I must say that I was hard on JT when we were sitting at 3-2, but 2 Big Ten Championships and 1 NC in 5 years is hard to complain about isnt it? How do you see the imediate future shaping out for the Bucks, next 1-5 years? Thanks

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 2:00:37 PM)
It's hard to criticize anybody that beats Michigan four out of five years. The key to the immediate future is in recruiting.

Seabus (Nov 21, 2005 2:00:50 PM)
Bill, if we can find a pass rusher next year our DL could be a true force with the way Pitcock, Patterson, and others are playing against the run. Can Gholston, Wilson, Worthington or anyone else be that guy?

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 2:01:45 PM)
The guy who should be a great pass rusher is Jay Richardson. He's very athletic, has long arms and can run. The other guys have excellent potential also. But I've already seen some of it in Jay. He'll be a senior next year.

Guest (Nov 21, 2005 2:01:49 PM)
Are you hearing rumors about Justin transferring?

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 2:02:00 PM)
OX asks about Zwick possibly transferring ...

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 2:03:10 PM)
You always hear rumors when a former starter gets beaten out. He simply has to make an intelligent decision if he does transfer. Meaning, the only smart way would be to go down a division so he can play immediately.

Seabus (Nov 21, 2005 2:03:26 PM)
Coach, regarding TE, I was blown away by how well Marcel Frost blocked. I saw him twice drive Branch (enormous DE/DT) 10 yards down the field. He pancaked him one of those times. This guy seems to have bigtime potential.

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 2:04:08 PM)
Marcel Frost is an exceptional athlete. He is fast and strong. He was also an outstanding defensive end. His problems have been with mental maturity and off-the-field situations.

jaluka (Nov 21, 2005 2:04:19 PM)
Coach - may be a re-hashed question, but when will the Big East lose it's automatic BCS bid

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 2:04:42 PM)
Don't expect any change in that. To me, the next big change is a playoff system.

ToledoBucknutty (Nov 21, 2005 2:04:50 PM)
So you think Texas is this year's national champs?

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 2:05:07 PM)
Yeah, I think Texas would win a head to head battle with USC.

Pastor Jack (Nov 21, 2005 2:05:19 PM)
I joined late....Is it your sense that The Ohio State University will be invited to the Fiesta Bowl? Do you believe that a ND team or a VT team would pose more problems for the Bucks?

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 2:06:21 PM)
I definitely think they will be invited. I don't think it matters which of those two are selected. I think Notre Dame might be a little tougher challenge simply because we have not faced a passing QB as good as Brady Quinn.

buckgrad (Nov 21, 2005 2:06:29 PM)
What would you advise Youboty and Whitner to do? Taking off my scarlet and gray glasses I still think they need another year, especially youboty he was not that impressive. Thanks

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 2:07:32 PM)
I was very impressed with the way our corners, Youboty included, played against the Michigan WRs. I think you have to give those guys some credit, too. The one thing that has been a constant has been the run support from the corners all season. We don't get beat to the outside very much.

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 2:07:43 PM)
Last question here today ...

Pastor Jack (Nov 21, 2005 2:07:57 PM)
Well as Coach Cooper's stay with the Bucks can attest, it is NOT all about recruiting. We had the best talent on the field for years, and we were unable to utilize it. Coach Tressel deserves a great deal of praise for his ability, integrity and performance on and off the field!

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 2:09:07 PM)
It takes both in order to win. You are naive if you think bad players can be coached up to be great. You have to have the talent to have any chance to win. Once you have the talent, coaching, discipline, conditioning, motivation and etc. all become important.

ToledoBucknutty (Nov 21, 2005 2:09:11 PM)
Thanks a bunch for your time coach!!! Another great chat......another great Buckeye win!! Muck 'em :D

BillConley (Nov 21, 2005 2:09:51 PM)
Thanks again everybody. We'll be back in a few weeks to do it again. We can talk more recruiting then. Have a great day!!
