Lamb Chat Archive: 11/22

Kyle Lamb stopped by today to talk about the latest with OSU hoops and hoops recruiting... and maybe a bit of football. We have a transcript below.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 12:45:53 PM)
I'm ready if you guys are...

yo (Nov 22, 2005 12:47:09 PM)
kyle...when are we supposed to get officia word from th eNCAA reagrding what if any furthee penalties are

yo (Nov 22, 2005 12:47:24 PM)
sorry about the spelling

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 12:47:34 PM)
The hearing runs December 9 and 10. That's when Ohio State goes before the NCAA and discusses their case....

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 12:47:48 PM)
After that, it will take probably 3 to 6 weeks for an answer

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 12:48:02 PM)
So basically, you're looking at January most likely when everything is finished

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 12:48:26 PM)
Could be sooner, but considering we're talking about the NCAA, I wouldn't count on it

osubuck1 (Nov 22, 2005 12:48:28 PM)
I know youre not a football expert. But how is it that we deserve being in a BCS bowl more than both Oregon and ND, and are ranked in front of them in the BCS standings and still may be left out of a BCS game

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 12:49:21 PM)
osubuck, Notre Dame is just Notre Dame. Like it or hate it, they are going to get places because of their name. Besides, being in the top 12 and having 9 wins, I believe they are nearly guaranteed of a bid anyhow...

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 12:49:24 PM)
as for Oregon....

drderm (Nov 22, 2005 12:49:36 PM)
I thought ND had an auto tie in.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 12:49:51 PM)
It's a matter of politics. They would mainly get in because in 2001 they had a good turnout at the Fiesta and also because the Pac Ten is really campaigning hard

AC (Nov 22, 2005 12:50:06 PM)
Kyle, any word on what additional "sanctions" may be imposed on the BBall program? How soon should we know?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 12:50:30 PM)
The hearing is December 9 and 10 as I was saying a few minutes ago. Expect an answer to be back a few weeks after that....

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 12:51:05 PM)
I'm hearing that the NCAA will probably accept Ohio State's addition of a loss of 2 scholarships for this season, and some banners may be taken down and the final four appearance might be wiped from the books

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 12:51:53 PM)
At worst case scenario, I think one more scholarship could be added for next season as a loss. That's no big deal, Ohio State would have only had 12 players next season anyways

AC (Nov 22, 2005 12:52:46 PM)
Thanks. Any word on if Oden's Indy HS team will be on ESPN like Lebron was?

drderm (Nov 22, 2005 12:53:17 PM)
I think the dispatch put tonights lineup at JJ, RL, TD, JF, and MS. Butler has 3 gaurds and 2 6-6 forwards. Do you think they should match speed better or are they going for rebounds?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 12:53:23 PM)
Yep...actually in December. On the 9th I believe. Oden and Conley's Lawrence North will be playing Daequan Cook's Dayton Dunbar on ESPN2.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 12:54:26 PM)
I think it's a rebounding issue derm. Matta feels they need to continue work on that. Now is the best time to take advantage of it.

AC (Nov 22, 2005 12:54:36 PM)
That's MUST SEE TV for us Buckeye BBall fans!

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 12:55:06 PM)
Absolutely is AC. Those who haven't yet seen Oden, you're in for a treat.

drderm (Nov 22, 2005 12:55:12 PM)
Kyle, if you think of it would you put a sticky up on the hoops board so I can remember to set my DVR, I will be gone the 9th

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 12:55:49 PM)
Yes, I will get the exact details and i'll make a post about it late this week or early next week. I'll stick it to the top.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 12:56:08 PM)
Those who live in ohio, I believe Lawrence North is also playing in Marion this year too

osubuck1 (Nov 22, 2005 12:56:08 PM)
Kyle, who is the second best college basketball team in ohio? Is it Cincinnati or the Bobcats this year?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 12:56:38 PM)
Actually, I think Xavier. Dayton also deserves mention. There are some real good teams in Ohio the next couple of years.

osubuck1 (Nov 22, 2005 12:57:28 PM)
Any chance that we could get 6 teams from Ohio in the ncaa tourney this year?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 12:58:21 PM)
Probably not, but it's not out of the question. I think safe bets are Ohio State, Xavier, Dayton and Ohio. Cincinnati should still be a tournament team, although it's hard to say how their season will play out.

drderm (Nov 22, 2005 12:59:18 PM)
Has anyone heard about the start of the Matta radio show or the TV show where he breaks down the games?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:00:00 PM)
That actually started this past Tuesday, I believe. Usually it will be Tuesdays, but with a game tonight, I'm not sure when they are airing it this week.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:00:19 PM)
I do know they started his radio call-in show though

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:00:59 PM)
Hey guys, I misspoke on that Dunbar-LN game. It's December 8, not December 9

drderm (Nov 22, 2005 1:02:19 PM)
Any new recruiting tidbits out there Kyle?

osubuck1 (Nov 22, 2005 1:02:24 PM)
So will we get another player in the same year as the thad four? Either this year or the next year as a juco player?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:02:33 PM)
We will have another basketball chat here in two weeks. We're going to do it on a Monday afternoon, just so everyone knows. Hopefully we'll have a much better turnout

AC (Nov 22, 2005 1:03:08 PM)
Kyle, does Matta make the team "accessible" for autographs before or after the season, like Tress did in August?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:03:24 PM)
derm, nothing much going on. The coaches are concentrating on the season, and there's really only need for going after a select few players right now. I do know they are in GREAT shape with Solomon Alabi, but it remains to be seen how that will play out if and when they receive commitments from Lauderdale and Koufos.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:03:51 PM)
I think JUCOS are done for a while for both this year and next osubuck

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:04:21 PM)
AC, nothing formal that I'm aware of. I'll check on that though.

ostate (Nov 22, 2005 1:04:46 PM)

ostate (Nov 22, 2005 1:05:06 PM)
What do you see being the first real test of the season?

ostate (Nov 22, 2005 1:05:20 PM)
opponent wise?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:06:00 PM)
Tonight could be a real test. Butler is a solid team with good shooters and great defenders. I think they could take it down to the wire... but if Ohio State gets by this one, I think you have to look at Virginia Tech next week in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge followed by Iowa State as the toughest Non-Conference game on the slate

Funderburke (Nov 22, 2005 1:06:41 PM)
Kyle, any news on OSU participating in the 2006 Pre-Season NIT

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:07:34 PM)
Haven't heard any chatter about that Funderburke, but I've heard a lot of rumored "big name" opponents for next season's schedule. I think fans will be excited about some of the games popping up next year. UCLA at Pauley Pavilion is confirmed for next December, so that's obviously a big one

ostate (Nov 22, 2005 1:07:46 PM)
Did the result of the Michigan State/Hawaii game suprise you? I certainly had to look at the boxscore twice. Are they a little overrated?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:09:17 PM)
Hawaii is a solid team, but I didn't see this coming by any means. I think it was a matter of being close and a lot of players cramped up at the end for MSU and the score was somewhat misleading. But that being said, I think Michigan State is not the powerhouse everyone is trying to make them out to be. They are a good team, no doubt, and probably worthy of the Big Ten No. 1 preseason ranking, but they have holes.

AC (Nov 22, 2005 1:09:42 PM)
Kyle, I see that Oden turns 18 in January, which means he turns 19 ealry his Freshman season at OSU next year. What does the NBA rule say about "when" a kid has to be 19 to be eligible for the draft?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:10:12 PM)
He would have to be 19 before draft day and have been one year removed from high school

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:10:19 PM)
so he would be eligible after his freshman year

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:10:27 PM)
But I believe he will be at Ohio State for probably two years

drderm (Nov 22, 2005 1:10:34 PM)
I have postive vibe about Bell becoming the 4 they are looking for. He makes freshman mistakes, but he does have skill and will go inside as well. Makes me less worried about how Othello does and the loss of Morgan.

AC (Nov 22, 2005 1:11:04 PM)
What do you base that on about Oden being here 2 years. Would be GREAT if it happens!

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:11:50 PM)
I'm not sure if Bell is the four they were ideally looking for, but it does appear he could develop into being a solid starter with all he brings to the table. It would be nice if he were a bit tougher and rebounded consistently, but you're right, he has done well so far.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:12:52 PM)
AC, there's just a lot of chatter close to the program that has probably culminated because Oden and those close to him have indicated he would likely stay two years, maybe more. I would say the "maybe more" is a stretch, but realistically, two yeras is very very possible.

Funderburke (Nov 22, 2005 1:12:56 PM)
Kyle, are any of the current players friends w/ any of the football players, I know at some other schools like Texas, a lot of the football players are real close and attend a lot of hoops games. Is this true at OSU too?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:13:59 PM)
I know it has been real true in the past. I believe Troy Smith is friends with one or two of the players, and I know he loves basketball. Beyond that, I don't know of any specific friendships with the current guys, but in general that's very common.

drderm (Nov 22, 2005 1:16:26 PM)
Gotta run, Thanks Kyle Go Bucks!

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:16:34 PM)
Thanks derm

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:16:37 PM)
take care

Funderburke (Nov 22, 2005 1:16:40 PM)
Do you think we will sell out many games this year? I hope most fans dont wait until next year to show up at the Schott, I think we have a very legit shot to make some serious noise this year.

AC (Nov 22, 2005 1:16:46 PM)
Kyle, any word on if Zwick is looking into a transfer? Would hate to see that. He has been sucha warrior!

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:17:52 PM)
Funderburke, this has become a pretty predictable routine, unfortunately (although it might change next year). Early in the season, attendance is sparce and the atmosphere is bland for no-name opponents. But by Big Ten season, games start selling out and it starts rockin. Next year might happen sooner just because of the hype of the kids coming in, but this year will pick up in December.

Funderburke (Nov 22, 2005 1:18:22 PM)
Kyle, how many student are able to buy tickets? Do they sell all that are offered? Will there be more available to students next year?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:18:33 PM)
AC, I haven't heard of any transfer vibes. If he did transfer, it would have to be to a Division I-AA school because he has only one season of eligibility and cannot sit it out during his transfer year

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:19:41 PM)
Funderburke, unlike football, there was a cap on the number of students that can buy tickets. I'm not sure what that number is, but I believe it's in the couple of thousands. I know they wanted to raise the number a bit this year, but I'm not certain if they did

Funderburke (Nov 22, 2005 1:20:36 PM)
Do you think Thad will be frustrated with the lack of fans and enthusiasm early in the year, we obviously want him here for a very long time.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:21:55 PM)
I don't think so. Not if and when he understands the routine. Having some big name opponents come in during the non-conference slate will help too. Fans' excuses sometimes for not showing up during November and December is that Ohio State "doesn't play anyone". I don't buy that excuse, but there's no doubt playing a UCLA or Florida will spice attendance up

AC (Nov 22, 2005 1:23:07 PM)
Winning withe a team with legit NC chances will spice things up too!

Funderburke (Nov 22, 2005 1:23:41 PM)
You mentioned, Va Tech and Iowa State as toughest non conf, I know St. Joes is a bit down from a few years ago, but the Palestra will be rocking, tough place to play for visiting teams. Thad has to have them ready for that one. I will be there, I hope some more Buckeye Fans in Philly come out for that game.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:23:43 PM)
That's true.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:24:26 PM)
The Palestra definitely isn't easy. The only reason I didn't mention that game is because as you said, St. Joe's is a little down this year. Iowa State on the road is going to be a real war.

Funderburke (Nov 22, 2005 1:25:51 PM)
Any trips to the Maui Invitaional in the near future?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:26:51 PM)
Doubtful...but we'll see. Matta doesn't seem to be a fan of the overseas traveling.

Funderburke (Nov 22, 2005 1:26:59 PM)
What about a game at Madison Square Garden, Duke and others have been playing games there almost avery year now. Could be a great place to showcase the Thad Five, maybe in the Coaches vs Cancer.

AC (Nov 22, 2005 1:27:07 PM)
Kyle, what's the latest on the Jim O'Brien fiasco? Any chance of an out-of-court settlement?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:27:29 PM)
I could see Ohio State trying for Coaches vs. Cancer or the Preseason NIT next year, but Maui seems unlikely

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:27:56 PM)
AC, it seems they are beyond settling. Ohio State feels O'Brien has no case and doesn't want to pay a dime and O'Brien is intent on winning the case.

AC (Nov 22, 2005 1:28:34 PM)
Then it won't be pretty as they say....hate to see that as no one really "wins"

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:28:47 PM)
I agree wholeheartedly

Funderburke (Nov 22, 2005 1:29:47 PM)
What do you see as Ivan Harris contributions this year? Pts, Rebounds, Assists?

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:30:42 PM)
Well, based on the first two exhibition games and Sunday's season opener, I would say Ivan could be good for about eight points, three rebounds and an assist here or there

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:31:22 PM)
He has taken a lot of criticism, and probably rightfully so, but Ivan has really played with some passion this year. I have been impressed from that standpoint. Still doesn't play "tough" but he is playing hard.

Funderburke (Nov 22, 2005 1:32:39 PM)
Going back 13 yrs, what do you think went wrong w/ the class of Greg Simpson, Gerald Eaker, Derek Anderson, Antonio Watson, Charles Killer Macon?

AC (Nov 22, 2005 1:33:33 PM)
Kyle, do you agree that it will be an absolute TRAVESTY if A.J. Hawk doesn't clean house for the Butka, Lombardi, etc awards? I've been watching OSU FB for 40 years and he is right there with ANY OSU LB to suit up!

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:34:34 PM)
Character issues basically. Simpson was a cancer. Everyone in Lima told Randy Ayers that from the beginning. He and Macon were a bad pair, some other questionable personalities came in, and things fell apart. Eventually, Anderson was the one good apple of the bunch and he didn't want to be around that atmosphere

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:35:40 PM)
I haven't formed an opinion on winning the Lombardi, but there's no question he should win the Butkus. When you consider the last two coaches (Randy Walker and Lloyd Carr) that have coached against Hawk both said he is probably the best LB they have ever seen, that's some high praise you almost never see from coaches publicly. That right there tells me he deserves the award.

Funderburke (Nov 22, 2005 1:36:20 PM)
How do you like Bill Hoskett as an announcer? Who are you favoritte National guys? Gus Johnson was great on last yrs game win against Illinois.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:37:50 PM)
Gus Johnson is good, sometimes he just gets a bit too excited, but he's fun to listen to. I like Hosket, he's a good analyst. Clark Kellogg is the second-best analyst in the business behind Jay Bilas IMHO. As for actual announcers, my favorite is Bill Rafftery.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:38:56 PM)
Jim Nance is also a great one, but I'm not a Billy Packer fan simply because I think he gets on a high horse and worries too much about what "he" would do.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:40:20 PM)
oops, Jim "Nantz" I mean haha

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:40:32 PM)
(my bad Jim)

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:43:00 PM)
OK Folks, well, I need to be going. It was a pleasure as always. Stay tuned, I believe we are going to have another basketball chat the first Monday in December.

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:43:08 PM)
Thanks for stopping by. Take care everyone!

AC (Nov 22, 2005 1:43:15 PM)
Thanks Kyle!

Kyle S. Lamb (Nov 22, 2005 1:43:40 PM)
Seeya later!
