This is the biggest recruiting weekend since Texas, if we could get two out of Thomas, Adjepong, and Larimore, and all three Tarblooders we would really be in great shape. How many guys do we need to call this weekend a success?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 2:17:12 PM)
I'd really be surprised if Ohio State actually gets any public commits this weekend but it would be great NYCBucks. I'll be talking with Chris Wells tonight to see what he has in store for the weekend. It could be the beggining of a great recruiting stretch run though. Thomas and Larimore have to be two main targets first and foremost.
edbuck51 (Dec 1, 2005 2:19:23 PM)
What are you thoughts on J. Thomas?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 2:19:23 PM)
Hi edbuck...I sure think he belongs at OSU where his teammate from last year, Alex Boone, now resides. I can only say that he's firmly told me Pitt on two occasions and that's all I know. I know most of you think he's only telling me what he wants to or is suppose to...and that may or may not be the case...but that's all I can go by. Things could change this week however...we shall soon find out.
buckmark (Dec 1, 2005 2:21:32 PM)
Thanks Kirk! Gary, do you see anyone other than Larimore actually commit after this weekend? I would guess most of the others are going to wait until after or during the Army game.
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 2:21:32 PM)
Hi buckmark...more than anything I think the staff needs to know for certain where they stand with Larimore and Thomas this weekend. I don't know if Larimore will commit or not but I hope a few of my solid connections will let me know what he's really thinking about OSU after this weekend. I have no idea if any of the recruits will commit or not.
edbuck51 (Dec 1, 2005 2:23:31 PM)
I've been on vacation and am a little behind. What happened to Glenville in the playoffs? I know they lost, but what were the reasons?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 2:23:31 PM)
Glenville got beat. They had a chance to go up 14-3 with the ball near the 4 yard line and what do you? A fumbled exchange cost them the ball and a chance to seize the momentum. St. Ed's went on to earn shut Glenville down and earn the victory.
boulderbuck1 (Dec 1, 2005 2:25:26 PM)
is/was thomas friends with Boone? and if they were, doesn't that have a role to play in his recruitment?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 2:25:26 PM)
They played right next to each other boulderbuck last year and Boone told me last summer that he wanted Thomas to follow him to OSU. I don't think Boone has gone out of his way up to now to actively recruit his friend but that could certainly change this weekend. I'm hoping Boone is his host but I have not heard. I'm sure Nevada could make a call and find out.
edbuck51 (Dec 1, 2005 2:29:06 PM)
What did you think of the Mr. Football selection?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 2:29:06 PM)
Obviously the people who were picking went by stats and stats alone. I like DeLone Carter, wonderful kid, he apprenticed under Tyrell Sutton, but he's not the best football in the state IMHO. Wells is one and Homan is two if you ask me. Carter is good...Tallmadge held him to 38 yards in the game I was at...but he wouldn't have been my choice if I had a vote. Wells win a bunch of national awards, deservedly so, and he's playing in the Army AA game and yet he can't even win the state's top award.
buckmark (Dec 1, 2005 2:31:16 PM)
I know that there are times we all wonder about Tressel's recruiting philosophies (late offers, few offers, inability to land late commits, etc.) but he has shown over time that he knows what he's doing. Do you see a strong finish this year? Maybe landing a few more late blue-chippers?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 2:31:16 PM)
Buckmark my feelings on this are is that JT is way too competant not to know exactly what's going on with recruiting. I firmly believe in him as far as recruiting goes, I just don't always follow the dots all of the time. JT knows all. That's just who he is. He has his hand in everything and I'm sure he feels pretty good about some players like Johnson in California for instance! Smile!

It's great to finally see Mark Johnson making an official in Jan. Have the "grade police" pardoned him? Any news on Thad Gibson.
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 2:32:55 PM)
Hopefully Gibson will be able to make a january visit also NYC but things don't seem to be looking good for him at this time. I say the chances of landing Johnson right now are pretty good compared to Gibson.
Poz79 (Dec 1, 2005 2:35:04 PM)
Gary, do you think Joe Morgan gets an OSU offer? What are your thoughts on him?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 2:35:04 PM)
Poz79 I can only base my opinion on him from one game that I saw him play and to be fair, it wasn't his best game. I watched him drop three catchable balls against Massillon. But on the flip side, I've watched him run track and I think he's a fantastic athlete. I just think there are other receivers out there that I would like OSU to land first and if it doesn't work out that way then I'd be interested in Morgan.

Can Canfield get 'er done?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 2:37:29 PM)
edbuck...I have to admit I wasn't really a believer until I watched them dismantle Tallmadge last week. Their defense is really that good. It's like watching a rugby game when they're on offense, same with Cardinal Mooney (both Youngstown teams), but they've perfected it this year. Being the homer that I am I'm going with Canfield to win it in D-II and I have to stick with Coldwater, my preseason pick, in D-IV. The Cavaliers chances are a lot better without Johnson playing now.
dbbucks (Dec 1, 2005 2:40:41 PM)
Gary- Any update on Gibson?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 2:40:41 PM)
dbbucks...he's going to take his ACT test next week and then visit Tennessee. This week Michigan and Tennessee coaches came to his home. He's hoping for a January visit to OSU but that's not a certainty. I would have to say that right now it doesn't look good for Gibson and Ohio State. If academics were not an issue he would be a Buckeye. Keep in mind, although he's involved with Michigan and Tennessee it doesn't mean he'll be admitted to either of those schools. I wish him well. He's playing hoops this year again.
buckmark (Dec 1, 2005 2:42:53 PM)
What is your take on the academic issues? Have they really relaxed them again to open the door for more possibilites?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 2:42:53 PM)
There are more than a couple guys with potential grade issues who at this point are or will be members of the OSU recruiting class so I hope they've relaxed admissions just a bit.
Guest (Dec 1, 2005 2:44:49 PM)
Do you see any chance for UCLA or Colorado? A win by either of these schools would muck up the bowl bigshots wouldn't it?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 2:44:49 PM)
I'm rooting for USC and Texas and even then OSU has to worry about Oregon. I don't think ND deserves it over OSU but they seem to be the television darling who has to be in a BCS bowl. OSU deserves it so I'm not really worried but I am a bit concerned that they might not get into the Fiesta against ND.

whats the weather supposed to be like in columbus this weekend?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 2:45:52 PM)
don't know about Columbus boulderbuck but I hope it's not bitterly cold in Canton and in Massillon.... Burrrrrr...! Six games in two days in subfreezing temps isn't very appealing to me right now.
dbbucks (Dec 1, 2005 2:49:00 PM)
Yobouty, Whitner and Holmes- who will stay? who will go?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 2:49:01 PM)
I don't have the answers obviously but from what I'm hearing...Holmes is gone and Whitner sure is looking like he's going. I don't know either way with Youboty but I believe another year would only help his cause. I know it would with Whitner as well but he's got a chance to change his life and his family's life around drastically from a financial standpoint and that could indeed trump all issues. I would not be surprised at all if Whitner decides to jump ship from what I'm hearing.
NYCBucks (Dec 1, 2005 2:51:40 PM)
How much faith do you have in the "star system" for recruiting? By all accounts Gibson had a great year and he now finds himself a four star. Is this system more for the fans than anything else?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 2:51:40 PM)
None...I'm not into stars and rankings at all. No question it's fodder for the fans more than anything else. The thing that kills me the most is that these rankings seemed to be influenced by the number of offers a recruit gets. I think the number of stars should have nothing to do with how many offers you have!
Guest (Dec 1, 2005 2:56:55 PM)
How impressed were you with Massilon in the St. Ed's game. We heard the last eight minutes on the web, and it sounded like a great game to be part of. Sounded like Gamble and Dailey are gamers. Do you think either of them end up in Columbus?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 2:56:55 PM)
edbuck51, I think Gamble really made a believer out of me. Earlier in the year against Ignatius he was really a defensive force who made some plays on offense. Against McKinley I think he had silent game for the most part. But he just took over the game against down the stretch and willed the Tigers to victory. He's a football player. I saw all I needed to see from him. He's definitely in my top five and may now have moved into my top three. I like Dailey a lot as well as far as the measureables but he doesn't dominate a game like Gamble does. He's a player no question. He's a real solid player and I think he can be right up there next year as well. Lawrence Wilson always looked great and had great measureables but he never really dominated a game on defense at St. Vincent-St. Mary-St. James, and I get that same feeling about Dailey right now.
buckguy15 (Dec 1, 2005 3:01:23 PM)
Who do you see as the RB targets for next year in-state and oos?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 3:01:23 PM)
Hi buckguy 15...in state...Morgan Williams may have vaulted ahead of everybody in the state this year. I'm a big Jordan Mabin fan, he's done it all three years so far and really has game if you ask me. I've seen Danny Herron do some really good things and you only need to see his brother play at MSU to know the kind of player Herron will turn out to be. I also like Hosea Simpson, Mark Wooldrige and William Johnson. Devon Torrence and Donnie Evege could possibly be very good running backs next year but they both will be top defenders for sure.
dbbucks (Dec 1, 2005 3:06:26 PM)
I think most of us looked at the Henton verbal and scratched our heads. Now that he has his team running off 11 straight and playing for a state championship this weekend, I am excited to add him to the fold. Any thoughts to the future of the QB position and directionally where Tress wants to go? Seems like very different offenses would be run under Rob S. and Henton, similar to the pre-season Zwick vs. Smith debate this past season.
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 3:06:26 PM)
For JT to stay with Smith for as long as he did only signals the direction he intends to go with his offense in the future. I'm a big Schoenhoft fan but I think Henton could be direction JT will continue to go in. Even at YSU, JT ran the option during his championship with drop back guys like Mark Brungard and Nick Cochran so he's always liked his QB's to be mobile. But now that TS has seemed to come along in the passing game, I think JT will continue to go with the mobile guy over the drop back guy. You can keep the clock running a lot better on the ground than in the air and that's the bottom line. You all remember JT's infamous "Time of Possession" line.

GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 3:07:25 PM)
Pig Man...as much as T Gibson would love to be a Buckeye, things just seem to indicate it's not in the cards for him at this time.
Guest (Dec 1, 2005 3:11:02 PM)
Like you, I was in the Zwick camp. I still think he see's the field better, and can deliver the ball better than TS. Having said that, Troy Smith has made so many plays Justin just can't make, and has done a bunch of them against Michigan. I've finally conceded Troy is the man, and he has really impressed with his efficiency. What are your thoughts?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 3:11:02 PM)
I concur edbuck! He's made a believer out of me. I don't buy all the early excuses about being suspended, etc. He's a fourth year junior and should know the offense in his sleep by now! When I saw Tony G running all alone in the secondary in the Penn State and Indiana games, for instance, I just couldn't understand what was going on. That's one thing JZ clearly has an understanding of. The Miami game this year is a perfect example. Zwick still may have a career after Ohio State if he stays sharp and in shape.

Is Nagy officially off the radar? I thought that OSU would go after a huge kid who could morph into a stud on either side of the ball. Could he be a "plan B" should Thomas and Browning fall through?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 3:16:51 PM)
From what I've been hearing the O-line class could stop at Smith, Browning and Thomas if he decides or not. That doesn't leave room for Nagy. I actually like Palmer before Nagy but Palmer fell off the radar a long time ago. I think they are really counting on Thomas coming on board whether he will do that or not. To OSU's credit, they haven't gave up on as of yet.
JimC (Dec 1, 2005 3:21:51 PM)
Gary, Who do you see filling out the class?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 3:21:52 PM)
Hi Jim...I really don't know because I don't follow the OOS recruiting as much. I will say that right now it looks like it could possibly be Rose, Small, Browning, Larimore, Johnson or McCarthy and reaching for Thomas. The rest is pure speculation on my part.
PigMan (Dec 1, 2005 3:25:32 PM)
Have you personally spoken with any recruits since the Michigan game whose opinion may have swayed a little? I know most of them don't base their opinions on a single game, but I'm wondering if kids are looking at OSU's recent success against TTUN and starting to question if OSU has UM's number, and if so, is that affecting their decision?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 3:25:32 PM)
Guys that I've spoken with since the Michigan game have all pretty much felt the same before and after. Mabin likes Ohio State, Gibson likes OSU even though he was there on Michigan's dime, Danny Herron likes Ohio State. The only one that went against the tide is Bryan Wright and that's because Michigan offered. From what I've been told, OSU basically told him that if you have a chance to go to a school like Michigan then go for it because a kicker is not in the plans this year at OSU. Even one with a monster leg like Wright. He likes the Big House and I wish him well.

GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 3:28:43 PM)
Lenix isn't a sure thing at this point. In fact, Lenix is what it would potentially look like for Ohio State if they were to offer Gibson and he would commit. Ginn Sr. always told me that Fred passed the Clearinghouse requirements but that didn't do him any good with OSU if that is indeed true. All's I know is that Lenix is at CCC still trying to secure the grades he needs to be admitted at OSU. I just called Fred last night in preparation for this chat but I got his voice mail.

Hi buckgrad...we knew so much about D'Andrea, Kudla, Hawk and Stan White and I would put Moeller and Homan in that class but I really don't enough about Johson and McCarthy to make that same comparison. I think it could be a dynamite class if they can add either Johnson, McCarthy or Gibson some how. Great potential.

Hi robobuck, Rose is everything but ocmmitted. He will do that during the Army All-American game on Jan.7, 2006. BTW letter of intent day is Feb. 1 this year for those of you wondering.

GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 3:35:49 PM)
Pigman...I can honestly tell you Browning is probably more honored by getting an OSU than Rose or Small are. The reason I say that is because Rose and Small were the chosen ones in this class and an OSU offer only affirmed their belief. Browning was always waiting for his to come and was truly honored to get it finally. Sure it wouldn't have surprised me if he committed on the spot but he's doing the Glenville shuffle right now.

If it's up to him osustudent...he would play one way or the other. But if the doctors say no he'll have no choice. I don't know that answer right now.

Our admissions standards for our football players seems to be higher than other schools in the conference. (We have passed on numerous 3-star, 4-star and 5-star recruits for grades.) I know that the NCAA is cracking down, but can you give an outline on how the soon-to-be new standards will effect schools that don't meet them? Also, any Big-10 schools you think might be in trouble with the new standards are in effect?

I would guess that he's in the same boat that Gibson is in and they both would be sailing off into the sunset. I'd love to see both of them OSU but it's not looking promising from what I'm hearing.
ToledoBucknutty (Dec 1, 2005 3:43:56 PM)
Hey Gary and thanks!! Not sure if you saw it, but Nevada said that ABC people were "100% sure" that the Fiesta was going to be our Bucks and ND.
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 3:43:56 PM)
I didn't and I'm glad to hear that. I had a media person in Youngstown tell me something to the contrary last night but I'll take Nevada's word any time. This person told me that the OSU-ND scenarion was a near lock a week or so ago but now Oregon is creeping in the picture more and more. Of course everything could change if USC or Texas don't win their conference because then they would become at large selections so I don't even think OSU-ND could technically be a 100 percent sure thing at this moment.

I personally believe that O'Neal will get look at replacing Salley. He's too big and too fast not to be in there. His physical ability is as good as it gets. I would think that if Whitner is able to teach him how to learn how to play the game before Whitner is gone (whenever that may be) that O'Neal could be as good as anyone who ever played there.

Do you think Derrell Johnson is going to be a Buckeye?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 3:49:02 PM)
The injury certainly won't impact that decision but it is sort of scary the way the two injuries he's had are almost identical to the opposite legs. That being said, if Johnson can get it done in the classroom...he could indeed be a Buckeye who will be recruited as an athlete but likely play wide receiver. I think he still has a ways to go to get there.

GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 3:57:20 PM)
Martin is number one and he should have an offer already. I think OSU is in good standing with him even without the offer. I really like a group of players next and I haven't made my list yet but I have Hines, Smith, Oliver, Clifford, Gamble, Dailey, Torrence, Evege, the Northmont QB, Williams, Mabin, Herron and Simpson all near the top right now. I like the lineman Schepis from Walsh Jesuit right now but I have yet to really look at any offensive lineman right now. I'm sure I forgot a couple of names.
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 3:58:04 PM)
Eric Thomas from Benedictine is another name that just came to mind. He's up there as a big wide body who can possibly become an offensive tackle.

Gary- Funny how many people were calling for Tress' head after the PSU game (and a lot of rumblings after Texas based on how that game unfolded). I even remember cries for bringing in Urban Meyer and his offense... the one that got thumped by 'Bama 31-3 and has 3 losses this year. Bottom line... 1 national championship, 2 conference championships, 4-1 vs. TSUN and most likely 3 BCS games in 5 short years. Nothing short of amazing, and of course I am referring to the on the field successes and the classroom/community successes are start to reach the levels of the Hayes' years... Any thought as to how many years Tress will want to coach?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 4:00:24 PM)
He's going nowhere anytime soon dbbucks. Tressel is a lifer. There will never be another Woody but there will never be another Tressel by the time he gets done. Already there will never be another JT at Youngstown State. My hometown Penguins have never even made the playoffs since he left although they got cheated this year.

It seems the recruiting philosophy is safteys that grow into LB's, LBs that grow into DE and DE that grow into DT. I really like this concept from a speed aspect. Maybe thats why you dont see us recruiting that 350lb DT that just stops the run.

Ive watched R Rose a couple times this year and it seems with that body he should be able to rag doll O lineman. That being said when does that light go on that Rob says "noone can block me, im going to dominate."? Can that be taught?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 4:06:21 PM)
If you saw him at the AA combine, which I did, no one could stop Rose. That's probably the single reason why he's playing in the game and Small is not. I'm not sure they typically take more than one kid from any school but I'm Ginn Sr. will try to set a precedant if that's the case. Rose has skills, I've seen him play quite a bit and have actually seen him make more plays than Wilson did last year. I like Lawrence Wilson a ton both on and off the field, but he didn't dominate in the games for the most part and neither does Rose. Both guys have a ton of ability and I'm happy they will both develop at Ohio State and not some other place. Rose will be all right.

Gary. Didn't you say Gibson is playing basketball this season. Maybe someone should tell him to put down the round ball and pick up some books if he want to go to tOSU.. What do you think?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 4:06:58 PM)
That was my thinking too robobuck!

Gary, maybe this has been asked already, but do you like our chances with Thomas? He didnt sound to excited to be a Buckeye in the article posted, his parents did though.

I like Thomas a lot. I would love to see him at Ohio State...I'm just not sure if it will happen that way. Maybe this weekend will change things.

I dont like when prospect profiles have 4.3 40 listed on so many kids and that prospect hasnt even been to a combine. There arnt that many 4.3 guys in the world. Lets just be real about the stats.

I concur mackv.

Gary, what's your way too early but what the heck prediction on next year's record?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 4:11:32 PM)
I really don't know if it's possible to out-offense anybody but I think Michigan and Penn State at home is a good thing. I don't see more than one or two teams beating OSU as it stands now. I think it could be TGII's last year at OSU next season so things need to get done.

Looks like Bollman was at Hudson (my alma mater) on Tuesday speaking with Nagy. He might not be out of the picture just yet.
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 4:12:43 PM)
That's a good thing NYCBucks...If Nagy could be patient he could be an 11th hour addition.

Do you think that it is kind of weird JT did not see Johnson when he was out in Cali?
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 4:14:07 PM)
I honestly don't know enough about Johnson personally but I was told some positive stuff about him just recently. That's all I know about Johnson right now.

What do you think the spread would be in a ND-OSU matchup? I would fugure that OSU would be giving at least 5-7 points.
GaryHousteau (Dec 1, 2005 4:15:33 PM)
It's hard to give a TD to that offense but with OSU's defense it's not out of the queston. Anywhere from 4-7 sounds about right.

That's it for today. I have to start getting ready for 6 games in 2 days in freezing temperatures. My picks go like this. Steubenville CC in VI, Patrick Henry in V, Coldwater in IV, Steubenville in III, Canfield in II, and Massillon in I. Enjoy your warm couch while you're watching in on ONN this weekend. Here's to a great recruiting weekend for the Buckeyes! God bless!
