Housteau Chat Archive - 12/8

Gary Housteau dropped by Bucknuts club chat this morning to discuss Buckeye football and recruiting. We have a transcript posted below.

Dingbuck (Dec 8, 2005 11:07:45 AM)
Gary, thanks for chatting. Are you still feeling confident about Bowman? What are you hearing on Wallace? Care to give a prediction on the bowl game?

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 11:09:37 AM)
Good morning gentlemen and any ladies that might be in attendance. Lots of great things to talk about this morning. Let's rock and roll! Smile!

buckgrad (Dec 8, 2005 11:11:34 AM)
...that was for Dingbuck, he asked if you were confident Bowman was going to be a buckeye

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 11:11:34 AM)
Good morning buckgrad and Dingbuck...two for one...yes I am confident about Bowman from the information I received on Tuesday afternoon I believe. I've since spoken with Nevada and from what we both know you might want to watch ESPN later this afternoon. Smile!

Dingbuck (Dec 8, 2005 11:14:18 AM)
Gary, care to speculate on a score for the bowl game and what one play would you like to see happen that we would be talking about for years to come?

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 11:14:18 AM)
Dingbuck I would love to see A.J. Hawk and the defense just dominate the Irish offense more than any thing else. Then I'm certain that Ohio's State's offense is much better than ND's defense. But I'd love to see TGII have a monster game and make ridiculous plays so he can go into his final year at OSU on a strong note. Ginn can make those kinds of ridiculous...maybe a few direct snaps out of the shotginn for starters.

buckgrad (Dec 8, 2005 11:16:53 AM)
Goodmorning Gary, my girlfriend surprised me Mon. with Fiesta Bowl tickets. Are you and the Bucknuts staff going to hold a get together in Phoenix, we would love to meet up with fellow buckeye fans.

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 11:16:53 AM)
It pains me immensely not to be going to the Bowl game once again. My bone however is the U.S. Army All-American game and I'm very happy with that. But you guys all know where I'd love to be on Jan 2. On the flip side I'll be in SA on Jan. 3 and I'll probably watch the other two Bowl games with Ginn Sr. and some of the players like Rose and Wallace and maybe even Small. So it should be cool. Some day I hope to cover an OSU Bowl game.

WestonBuckeye (Dec 8, 2005 11:19:41 AM)
How about Wallace?

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 11:19:41 AM)
Hi WestonBuckeye...I first met Wallace last summer at the North-South game when he was on an unofficial visit. He loved everything about OSU at the time. Since that time, he's always kept OSU in the front of the pack and I will not be surprised when he pulls an OSU hat out of the bag at the U.S. Army AA game. I'll certainly have a lot of time that week to find out what he's thinking. I thought then and I still think now that he will be a Buckeye. No winks yet on this guy sorry.

Mr. February (Dec 8, 2005 11:23:33 AM)
Hi Gary, sorry if this has already been asked. Can you tell us why you're so confident Bowman will be a Buckeye? Thanks in advance!

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 11:23:33 AM)
Hi Mr. February...if I told you they would have to shoot me. I can tell you this. I tell Steve first hand every bit of information that is leaked to me and by who. I have no super secret sources that are surreptitiously (?) working on the staff at OSU or whatever, but I have good connections and some are former and current players as well. It pays to get to know some of the guys like I do eventually. But until he announces in OSU's favor this afternoon, I truly have no idea for sure or not, if it's Ohio State. But you have to trust your sources and I do. Let's hope OSU is not Jarret-ed as Nevada referred to yesterday.

Guest (Dec 8, 2005 11:27:32 AM)
Gary, I heard nagy committed to Wisky and Hartline to KY. Have you heard this and what are your thoughts? I fear Nagy will be one of those big nastys to come back and haunt us in a few years. Wisky always seems to have them and they jam the ball down our throats.

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 11:27:32 AM)
Last I checked dingbuck...this weekend in Canton I talked to Jack Rose from GlenOak...and he thought a Kentucky commitment for Hartline was imminent. Rose said that Mike really likes the QB coach there. I still think that Mike is going to be a tremendous QB has a great chance to be playing on Sundays once he either gets better receivers that can catch his bullets or he develops a little better touch on his balls. Keep in mind, Hartline is a great athlete, like his brother, and I think he's going to be terrific when he gets his chance in Kentucky. I have no inside on Nagy other than the messageboards. He looked a step slow to me when I saw him play this year but he's a rugged kid and should do well in Madison if that's where he ends up.

buckgrad (Dec 8, 2005 11:29:40 AM)
Gary, what are you and Nevada hearing about Wallace, sounds like OSU and PSU again

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 11:29:40 AM)
If I had to say right now...from talking with a few different people...OSU is looking good with Wallace at this time. I won't even try to speak to him directly until down in San Antonio because certain guys already are calling on certain players and I don't like to jump in late in the game. But I will jump in down in San Antonio and get everyone up to date then.

Mr. February (Dec 8, 2005 11:31:25 AM)
Do you think Rob Rose will play inside or outside at Ohio State?

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 11:31:25 AM)
He wants to play on the outside and he has the physical tools to be a monster but he can be a solid inside player if he can allow himself to make the change. Going in however he'll be a DE no question. Rose is a good kid and if the team needs him inside then he'll do it. Reluctantly at first, but he'll do it.

Mr. February (Dec 8, 2005 11:34:17 AM)
Should Buckeye fans give up on the thought of Joe Thomas ending up in Columbus?

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 11:34:17 AM)
Joe Thomas has been consistent as he could be about his commitment to Pitt and that's great. Up until this weekend, I have been consistent as I could be in backing him on that commitment. But I truly believe the winds of change may be blowing at this time and I don't believe we've heard the last of it for Joe Thomas and Ohio State. I'll just leave it at that right now.

buckgrad (Dec 8, 2005 11:36:59 AM)
Are we done with Ohio kids this year (except for the 3 Glenville players)? If not who else do we get in Ohio? Thanks

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 11:36:59 AM)
Thomas would be a nice late addition. Otherwise I'm not going to have a lot to do on Signing day this year. Right now there is only Glenville on my itinerary.

buckinut (Dec 8, 2005 11:40:24 AM)
Hi Gary, it's been a while since a big recruit has come out of the Newark area. Is there any on the horizon?

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 11:40:24 AM)
Hi buckinut...it depends where that Adjepong kid is from! Chris Wells really liked this kid on his visit. Is Carteret, NJ from the Newark area?

Mr. February (Dec 8, 2005 11:42:41 AM)
Do you think we need another corner in this class even if we land Wallace?

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 11:42:41 AM)
Let's all keep in mind that Ohio State is really high on Andre Amos at this time so there's no need to really panic if Youboty decides to go pro as some are speculating at this time. But yes I do think Ohio State does need another corner in addition to Wallace, if they get him. Coleman is a high school safety but I think he's more of a corner type at the next level. But one more would be nice.

buckinut (Dec 8, 2005 11:47:50 AM)
LOL sorry Gary Newark, OHIO

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 11:47:51 AM)
LOL...what an idiot I can be sometimes...sorry. Sure I like the offensive tackle who is a sophomore at Licking Valley right now. He's a good looking big kid, Tim German, 6-6 and 275 pounds. And I think the freshman running back there, Storm Klein, can be a good one down the line. Thanks for following up with that.

Guest (Dec 8, 2005 11:48:53 AM)
Is it a forgone conclusion that Santonio Holmes will be turning pro after this season?

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 11:48:53 AM)
Hi Jimmy...I would have to say yes.

Mr. February (Dec 8, 2005 11:51:15 AM)
I read on another site Gibson has an official set up in January. Is that a sign maybe he's not as far away from qualifying as some have suggested?

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 11:51:15 AM)
That's a good sign yes but Freddie Lenix had an official visit too and you see where he's ended up and where he might likely head up if he still can't qualify soon. He may indeed end up in Cincinnati but I don't know that to be the case for sure. I'm rooting for Gibson. He's a nice kid, like Derrell Johonson, who obviously waited too long before they took their academics seriously.

Guest (Dec 8, 2005 11:56:20 AM)
What are your thoughts on the defensive line depth that Ohio State has going into the 2006 season?

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 11:56:20 AM)
I actually like it a lot Jimmy. I would have loved it even more if Marcus Green and Mike Kudla were returning but here is a solid group of veterans coming back. Both Green and Kudla were very solid players no question. I think Pitcock can potentially dominate like no other before him. But they have young guys who have already been in the program that need to step it up if this unit hopes to have any kind of major impact. They will have to be the rock upon which the defense is built next season. Patterson and Pitcock can be unblockable at times. The depth is there but they all need to step it up a notch.

Mr. February (Dec 8, 2005 11:58:52 AM)
Of all the kids still on the board who have not made a verbal committment, which one would you want the Buckeyes to land the most?

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 11:58:52 AM)
Ray Small but he's kind of like already committed even though he's not committed. That being said, I would have to say Joe Thomas. I've watched this kid for two years and I liked him at guard next to Boone and I like him on the edge at tackle this year. After not landing Boren, justifiably so, and Brown, ouch, it would be really disappointing not to get Thomas in the end even though he continues to profess his allegiance to Pitt.

Guest (Dec 8, 2005 11:59:23 AM)
What is the likelihood that Ohio State will land Ryan Hill?

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 11:59:23 AM)
That would be the biggest surprise of all if you ask me Jimmy.

buckgrad (Dec 8, 2005 12:04:03 PM)
speaking of Wells, how did he do recruiting? he say anything to you about the visit that didnt get posted? thanks

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 12:04:03 PM)
Wells spoke highly of Thomas and Adjepong. Ballard spoke highly of Thomas and Larimore. Hill, Thomas, Adjepong, and Larimore were the only four guys there that weren't OSU guys and I've heard positives on three of the four. Nothing negative about Hill I just didn't get anything positive on him.

buckgrad (Dec 8, 2005 12:06:14 PM)
how about AJ winning the Lombardi, thin he is a lock for the Butkus now? I dont see how Paul P. can beat him for that when he AJ already beat him for the Lombardi. Thanks

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 12:06:14 PM)
Great news on Hawk. I absolutely love the kid and couldn't be happier for him. The picture I took of him smiling after the Michigan game will go down as one of my all time favorites. What a great football player he is and I would love for my Brownies to somehow end up with him. Yeah I would say the Butkus should be automatic. You'll have to wait one more year Paul P. Congratulations to A.J. Hawk!

j5topdogg (Dec 8, 2005 12:07:07 PM)
hey gary, any news on ausberry?

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 12:07:07 PM)
He seems to be the class enigma. I can't really say other than it seems like OSU still has an outside chance with him.

Mr. February (Dec 8, 2005 12:13:25 PM)
I think a couple big time pass rushers on the d-line, either current players or recruits, is this team's biggest need. Do you agree? (Thanks for the chat, Gary)

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 12:13:25 PM)
Yeah I do February and that's why I like Patterson and Pitcock a whole lot. Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside. Both guys have the potential to get to the QB a lot from their respective positions, especially Patterson. I think Barrow could be an inside pass rusher as well. He has the natural talents to do that. It's time that Lawrence Wilson steps up to the plate. He looks the part, is a great practice guy, but now he needs to take it to the next level. I like Wilson a lot and maybe my expectations for him are really high, but I think he needs to be the man that people expect him to be next year. Those are four guys that I really like next year. And I think that Richardson has come on a bit and Patterson is steady depth inside. Cotton could be another Marcus Green but he needs to rededicate himself in the class room first and then in the training room. I think a combination of all of those guys that I've mentioned can put heat on the QB in some manner. Of course there's others like Worthington around but we have to start and stop somewhere for right now. (And you're welcome Mr. February. Thank you!)

buckgrad (Dec 8, 2005 12:16:14 PM)
How about Mark Johnson? Same as Ausberry?

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 12:16:14 PM)
That pretty much hits the nail on the head buckgrad. I've heard some good and not so good things recently about Mark Johnson. I actually thought things were in good shape for a minute but I don't seem to have that same feeling now. I'd be happy with one of the two but I'm not counting on either. It would be a bonus to land either of them.

Guest (Dec 8, 2005 12:19:56 PM)
Any names on the recruiting scene that you are hearing that are under the radar for us, the average fans?

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 12:19:56 PM)
I'm still hoping myself for some more names to come under the radar. I really liked Marc Krauss from the Patrick Henry Patriots. I'm not saying that he's on OSU's radar but he's a good looking receiver prospect. He's got great size for the position and they lit up the scoreboard all year long in D-V. Somebody should be in on him.

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 12:28:57 PM)
That seems to be it for now with the questions so I'll call it a wrap. Tune in to ESPN this afternoon and let's hope that Bowman doesn't disappoint. If JT is the closer that I know him to be I will not be surprised to see Bowman announce Ohio State. Hopefully it could be the start of a great run because I know that JT is burning up the frequent flyer miles at this time. It's been great talking with those of you who participated today. And I want to thank those of you who also take the time to read the chat at a later time. Steve will be here on Friday at 2 p.m. I believe. And congratulations to St. X for their big win. And all the other state champions as well. Steubenville is in a position to make another run next year. Mooney could be back again despite losing to a terrific Coldwater team. That team could probably play on the same field with the three champs in the higher division. Two future stars that really emerged from the tourney are Dane Sanzenbacher of Toldedo Central Catholic and Sean Ba

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 12:29:10 PM)
Baker of Canfield.

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 12:30:41 PM)
And I have to admit that Dareus Ashley, just a sophomore this year, won me over last week. Love the kid!

GaryHousteau (Dec 8, 2005 12:31:19 PM)
Have a great weekend. Watch some high school basketball. And as always...Go Bucks!
