Housteau Chat Archive: Dec. 16

Gary Housteau stopped by Bucknuts chat today to talk some Buckeye football and recruiting. We have a transcript posted below.

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 1:11:02 PM)
Good afternoon everyone in attendance...I'm ready, willing and hopefully able to answer your questions!

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 1:11:49 PM)
There's been a lot of quality information on the www.usarmy.scout.com web site recently.

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 1:12:27 PM)
There will be a ton of quality football players in that all-star game.

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 1:12:54 PM)
If you have any questions please start to post them now!

drunk@vc (Dec 16, 2005 1:15:59 PM)
Thanks for taking the time to chat Gary. I have faith in Tressel but I am a little concerned with the amount of recruits left. Are you confident we will finish with a strong class

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 1:16:00 PM)
Hi drunk@vc...what's that all about...I know the politically correct people don't like to talk that way but I am concerned as well. It seems like Ohio State has moved on from their A list to their B list and are now working on their C list of candidates. All hope is not lost with the Glenville trio...and now there is an outside chance once again at Gibson, don't count it, but things don't seem to be going as good as we would all like them to be.

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 1:17:44 PM)
As far as Gibson is concerned...I would hang with him as long as possible if I were on the OSU staff but it could be all for not if the transcripts don't deem him worthy. Gibson and Derrell Johnson would be two fine additions in Ohio but they obviously can't count on either of them...Freddie Lenix is a perfect example.

mackv (Dec 16, 2005 1:21:29 PM)
When is JT going to score a blue chip OOS recruit? The only commits hes gotten this year were slam dunks. I dont see him as a closer. The whole " whatever is best for you" wrap is old. Tell these kids TOSU is the best place in the country for college football.

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 1:21:29 PM)
Hi mackv...yes the softsell approach doesn't really resonate with the top OOS kids. Don't really know the answer except that I know that JT is an extremely competent individual and I have to continue to have the utmost confidence in his game plan for recruiting. This is one of the best OL classes that the state of Ohio may ever have, for instance, and I think a couple of mistakes were made with that group. Of course hindsight is 20/20 but Joe Thomas shouldn't have been a plan B recruit. It's not like they never saw him play last year.

JimC (Dec 16, 2005 1:24:00 PM)
Hi Gary, Any updates from the WHAC? How is Carp?

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 1:24:00 PM)
Hi Jim C...the updates from the kids being recruited to Ohio are really positive about what they're being told about the WHAC so that's all good. And I've been talking to some people who know and they don't think Carpenter will be ready to play in the Bowl game.

drunk@vc (Dec 16, 2005 1:26:03 PM)
Anything new with Wallace. I am a little nervous about Penn State they seem to be hitting Maryland pretty hard.

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 1:26:03 PM)
I'm a nervous drunk too, er, I'm nervous too drunk. My only solace in the Wallace matter is that I know he really connected well with some of the OSU players when he visited Ohio State last summer unofficially. He pretty much loved his visit from what I was told by numerous people. I'll try to get an early read on him down in San Antonio.

mjw1200 (Dec 16, 2005 1:29:06 PM)
how do you see the army game playing out for us? wells and smith are playing, correct? is wallace or rose announcing, or anyone else we have a shot at?

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 1:29:06 PM)
Hi mjw1200...yes Chris Wells and Connor Smith will be in the game as will Wallace and Robert Rose. Both Wallace and Rose are set to announce their choice at the game. I must mention Justin Boren even though he's going Michigan. He's still an Ohio player and I'm sure most of you reading this can care less that he's in the game. There might be one or two other players that Ohio State fans might be interested in as well.

labsbeabmm (Dec 16, 2005 1:29:56 PM)
If they don't get Rose, Small, and Browning, they've screwed up

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 1:29:57 PM)
Hi labsbeabmm...done deal! No sweat!

mackv (Dec 16, 2005 1:32:34 PM)
The Glenville trio have become must gets. no questions asked. The guys they are offering now tells me they are not even sure of anyone except the commits.

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 1:32:34 PM)
I've moved on to Jermale Hines months ago. I would like to add Kyle Jefferson to the mix but he really needs to be a star in track this season to regenerate the 'p' word with him. He was a bit of a disappointment last year I would say even though he has all the potential in the world.

mjw1200 (Dec 16, 2005 1:35:27 PM)
i know that scout has partnered with the all american bowl, but is tom lemming still picking the players? i find it odd that a two star player according to your networks rankings gets an invite ( i am refering to the east wide reciever and ND commit fayson)? it would have been nice to see small there and he is clearly more highly regarded by your network.

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 1:35:27 PM)
I've talked many times with Ted Ginn Sr. about Small but it doesn't seem like he will be able to get him in at this time. Don't count it out as of yet but don't hold your breath waiting for it to become a reality. I don't really know who actually is responsible for picking the teams within Scout, all I do know is that I have no say in any of the picks. Smile!

drunk@vc (Dec 16, 2005 1:42:13 PM)
I heard that admissions are loosening up their standards. Is that true and will we see any late additions to this class because of it?? It is very frustrating when kids cant get into OSU but have no trouble getting into a school like Michigan.

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 1:42:13 PM)
Admissions is such a touchy issue any more. I wouldn't exactly say some of the same kids have no trouble getting into a school like Michigan that do at Ohio State. As far as I know if they pass the NCAA clearinghouse they can get into any school. Some schools have set higher admission standards than others and that's where the difference lies. As far as I knew, for instance, Lenix was clearinghouse eligible last year and he's clearinghouse eligible as of now. But his transcripts are obviously not good enough to get into OSU where they are at UC. Gibson could in a similar position. When you lose so many guys like Maupin and others in midstream, the percentage for graduation rates might not allow you take any more lower qualifiers. I don't know!

MacAuley (Dec 16, 2005 1:43:12 PM)
What is the gameplan to replace carpenter in the Fiesta Bowl? will it work?

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 1:43:12 PM)
Hi MacAuley...I don't understand the question can you rephrase it please.

CABuck (Dec 16, 2005 1:47:33 PM)
Gary, Do you think the loss of Lenix hurts our Glenville connection in any way? It is obvious that Ginn Sr. does everything to show his kids the way to OSU, but if he has more situations like this where a kid gets the door slammed on them at the last second, or even worse after they have signed, other schools might get more serious looks. Do these situations make Mr. Ginn think twice about wholehearted support for pushing to get those borderline kids to make OSU a reality?

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 1:47:33 PM)
Not for an instance CABuck...what most people don't understand is the genuine and sincere love that Ginn and everyone at Glenville have for The Ohio State University. Believe me, Ginn is working harder than you can imagine for his kids and for Ohio State.

mackv (Dec 16, 2005 1:51:03 PM)
Laurinatis getting reps might be a blessing. Not that i dont want Carp to play, but the young guys that get reps with the ones and twos will be big next year.

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 1:51:03 PM)
We can all put as positive a spin as we want about Laurinaitis getting reps or whatever but Ohio State is playing Notre Dame and I for one would like it if OSU was fully armed going into the Fiesta Bowl. And Carpenter is not just your average defender. If it weren't for Hawk being on the team, Carpenter would be the top defender on the team this year. It's a big loss no matter how you slice it in terms of trying to beat Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. It's good for JL's future development no question but it's not the best thing that could happen to OSU's defense trying to stop Brady and company.

Guest (Dec 16, 2005 1:53:52 PM)
Afternoon Gary, I thought for sure that Wilson or Worthinton would have seen some action this year. Is the coaching staff high on both or has one stood out ?

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 1:53:53 PM)
CT Bucknut asked about Wilson and Worthington this year and clearly Wilson has stood out over Worthingtonas evidenced by the amount of playing time this year. Worthington still has his redshirt status and the same can't be said for Wilson. Whenever Wilson's game performance equals his practice production, then he's going to be an extremely effective player. I think both guys have great size and a ton of natural athletic ability so I feel good about either one going forward.

buckman (Dec 16, 2005 1:57:29 PM)
Gary, waht are our chances with Ben Martin? Sounds like he is a strong lean to ND right now

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 1:57:29 PM)
Hi buckman...I believe OSU's chances are a lot better than they seem to be from a public standpoint. I think they might even get better when Martin sees how both teams play defense in the Fiesta Bowl. No question Weis and company are not softselling Martin in this confrontation. I'm certain that JT and company are doing most of their work with Martin on a much subtler level...at least they better be. I'd guess 50-50 is truly an accurate assessment right now although the sizzle factor goes to ND right now.

buckman (Dec 16, 2005 1:59:01 PM)
Gary, off subject. I was watching the Amazing race final this year and I thought about your brother... How is he doing, is he still with his girlfriend?

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 1:59:01 PM)
Hi girlfriend is now his wife and they're expecting a daughter early next year. Thanks for asking!

Guest (Dec 16, 2005 2:02:05 PM)
Gary, any feeling on Mark Johnson?

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 2:02:05 PM)
CTBucknut asked about Mark Johnson and to be perfectly honest with you, my sources told me that the staff has/had been high on Bowman and Johnson for quite some time. I tend think that McCarthy has to be in their plans now with Bowman going to PSU and the uncertainty of Gibson's eventual status. At least I hope McCarthy is strongly in the mix right now.

Guest (Dec 16, 2005 2:06:32 PM)
as much as people are talking bad about our recruiting class, you have to like that our average stars per player is higher than everyone but usc's. i think thats a good sign that they are doing some things right. but dont you think with the amount of talent every year in ohio we should have had less to worry about? you think after this year they might have a talk with the AD and at least let some kids start visiting?

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 2:06:32 PM)
mjw1200...I don't really care much about stars when I look at a player. He's either a player or he's not and if he is then I'm interested. Some guys are so obvious talented but some you really have to see in person in order to become convinced. Sure it's nice to land 4 and 5 star guys because they are at that level because of all the offers they have, not necessarily because the people rating them have seen enough of them to know any better. If they're really good in high school like Hawk and Sutton for example then I'll take them no matter how many stars they have.

drunk@vc (Dec 16, 2005 2:12:07 PM)
Assuming we get Browning do you see us adding any other Olineman to this class. Im disapointed in the oline class. This could have been a year in which we could have loaded in that area.

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 2:12:07 PM)
I don't believe there is anything to assume about getting Browning now...at this point he's a must-get considering the way the instate harvest looks of offensive linemen looks right now. I'd seriously consider looking at Yanni Karvounides from Tallmadge at this point...he's about a tough a nut as you'll find in the trenches but he's just an inch or two short. He's a football player I can assure you that. Anxious to see what they have planned.

MacAuley (Dec 16, 2005 2:14:39 PM)
Will Bucknuts publish details on all the Buckeye related activities that will be going on during Fiesta Bowl week?

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 2:14:39 PM)
Hi MacAuley...I sure think that Steve has a lot of good things in store for everyone here from the Fiesta Bowl. I'm positive that by now he knows the right people to know and the places to see. I would love to be out there I can assure you that but I will be watching the game with friends on the 2nd and then I leave for San Antonio on the 3rd. Check with Steve on his chat next week if you don't know anything sooner than that.

Guest (Dec 16, 2005 2:15:21 PM)
Tamarcus Porter 6' 170 corner from Florida has TOSU on his list. His highlight film is impressive. Says hes 4.8 40 but film says otherwise. Any info on this kid?

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 2:15:22 PM)
Hi mackv...sounds like a C-list player at this point.

Guest (Dec 16, 2005 2:18:32 PM)
Gary, Is there anything at all that precludes OSU from offering seniors-to-be NOW? Seems like there are several Ohio kids, high interest, obvious OSU material, some of them with offers from elsewhere already....why not offer them and get the ball rolling now? I understand grades might be something to need more info about, but surely Martin is up to snuff with an offer from ND already. What harm would it be to get the benefit of a kid knowing you were in on them first/real early?

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 2:18:32 PM)
Hi CABuck...I don't know all the groundrules on this stuff like Steve but I think they can make an offer to a young man at any time through their head coach. Sometimes, for instance, Ohio State might be hot on a recruit that plays the same position...like defensive end...this year, so they hold off on making an offer until they get a verbal commitment or a signature on a letter of intent. I think Martin, for instance, is that special guy that you offer early no matter who else you are recruiting...period.

MacAuley (Dec 16, 2005 2:20:57 PM)
Carpenter has been instrumental as a pass rusher. If he will not be playing, how will the coaching staff scheme to replace his pass rushing? Do you think they will be able to cover Carpenter's abscence adequately?

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 2:20:57 PM)
Sure, one way is using Patterson more on the edge like Carpenter in certain situations like they did at Michigan. Kudla and Patterson are nearly as formidable as Kudla and Carpenter when it comes to getting to the QB. But sure I do believe they will cover Carpenter's absence adequately if that is indeed the situation.

Guest (Dec 16, 2005 2:25:35 PM)
Gary, who are some of the top prospects in this years junior class in Youngstown? Any future Buckeyes, potentially?

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 2:25:35 PM)
Hi Fran Davanzo...I think Danny Herron from Harding will be one of the top prospects in the Youngstown area as will be his teammate Sidney Glover. However I heard rumblings that Glover is shopping around. Sean Baker's stock will continue to rise. All you have to do is watch his last two state playoff games and you'll see why. He's a great athlete who many in Youngstown area are saying that he's going to be better than Bo Pelini ever was. Herron, whose brother goes to MSU, really likes Ohio State at this point but there's a list of backs in Ohio similar to his caliber...Morgan Williams and Jordan Mabin are two of them.

busman64 (Dec 16, 2005 2:26:51 PM)
Hey Gary, AJ Wallace is he a buckeye or a nittany lion

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 2:26:51 PM)
Hi buman64...the underground swell is pointing to Penn State right now but I think OSU is still right there.

Guest (Dec 16, 2005 2:29:49 PM)
Do you agree that there are about 10 to 15 guys in the country that are head and shoulders above the rest and everyone else you can throw in a pot and depending on coaching and work ethic etc the cream will rise?

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 2:29:49 PM)
I would easily say more than 10 or 15 guys in the country. Just look at the roster of the Army AA game. I think there are 10 or 15 guys annually in Ohio that are difference makers, that are head and shoulders above everyone else. Ohio is as fertile as any state on a per capita basis and Ohio State really has no instate competition...that's a huge advantage. For instance there are players in Michigan that grow up as MSU fans and hate the word Michigan. Stanton is just one example.

torontobuck (Dec 16, 2005 2:31:00 PM)
hi gary, where do we stand with ausberry. I get the feel he is USC all the way

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 2:31:00 PM)
Hi torontobuck...I guess we will know for sure on Jan. 7. I have to agree with you but guys like Percy Harvin and the other kid that USC is also high on might make Ausberry look elsewhere.

Guest (Dec 16, 2005 2:34:28 PM)
Other than the Glenville kids is there anyone you feel good about? seriously

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 2:34:28 PM)
Mackv I would say that the tight end from Pa that has recently come into prominence would be a foolish not to come to OSU at this point. I still think there's a decent chance that Wes Lyons will become a Buckeye but he seems to like Boston College a lot. I know everyone in the know keeps saying to stay positive that things will turn out all right...but the evidence to the contrary is alarming. But I'll be happy any day having Wells and Homan and Smith at the very top of the list. All studs no question.

torontobuck (Dec 16, 2005 2:37:30 PM)
McCarthy, Gibson, Johnson do we get any of them?? I was confident but now I dont know.

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 2:37:30 PM)
Toronto ...getting one (McCarthy) I'd be happy...two (McCarthy and Johnson) I'd really be happy...and getting all three although not very likely, I'd be estatic. I think Ohio State has to get at least one of these three. Again I will repeat that in the recent past I had heard some positive words concerning Johnson but again I heard positive words on Bowman before as well.

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 2:41:14 PM)
That's a wrap for today. I want to thank everyone who participated in the chat and also those of you who took the time to read the transcript later on. I really can't wait for the Fiesta Bowl and I feel really good about it at this particular juncture. I truly believe Ohio State is the better overall team. I'm going to start checking out some hoop games as early as next week. I have McKinley and GlenOak on my radar and I'm really anxious to see the 7-footer from GlenOak. Have a great weekend. Stay warm and keep reading Bucknuts. Nevada has a chat coming up next week so I'm looking forward to reading all of his insights. Go Bucks!

labsbeabmm (Dec 16, 2005 2:41:58 PM)
I live in Pittsburgh and hear frequent quotes from Lyons. He seems to have a new favorite everyday but the one consistent thing is his desire to play early. I'm doubtful he comes to OSU

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 2:41:58 PM)
I tend to agree labsbeabmm...but don't discount his relationship with his brother in the end.

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 2:43:34 PM)
It would be better for him to wait for playing time at Ohio State than it would be at Boston College or West Virginia if that were the case. Keep that in mind.

MacAuley (Dec 16, 2005 2:43:53 PM)
Thanks Gary

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 2:43:53 PM)
Thank you... I-O!!!!!

MacAuley (Dec 16, 2005 2:44:24 PM)
O - H !!!

GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2005 2:44:24 PM)
I-O!!! I pulled the trigger too quick. My bad.
