Chekwa (6-0, 175, 4.5) comes from the same high school as Notre Dame verbal Richard Jackson, a wide receiver. East Ridge posted a perfect 10-0 regular season this year, but lost to Edgewater 27-24 in a Class 6A Region 1 quarterfinal match-up. Edgewater features wide receiver Greg Mathews, whom the Buckeyes were recruiting before he verbaled to Michigan.
"I liked the facilities and the weight room," said Chekwa, whose name is pronounced CHIM-dee CHECK-wa. "I had met the coaches on other times. They're nice guys. One of the highlights was the food.
"I liked the school and the coaches. They have coaches to help you with weightlifting and speed training."
Chekwa went on to Maryland on Friday.
"There were some nice guys to talk to at Maryland," Chekwa said. "I enjoyed hanging out with them. I felt comfortable there."
Chekwa stopped short of naming a leader. Those were his first two visits. He has another trip planned Jan. 6 to Wake Forest and may also visit Georgia Tech at some point.
"I am still considering Georgia Tech," Chekwa said. "I may make a commitment after I visit Wake Forest or I may decide then if I want to make another visit someplace else, maybe Georgia Tech."
Chekwa was a starter as a junior and a senior. This year, he had 40 tackles and seven interceptions as a cornerback. He also had four fumble recoveries.
"I think I cover the deep ball really well," Chekwa said. "I think I am a big cornerback that a lot of programs are looking for right now."
With his team eliminated from the playoffs, Chekwa participated in the Central Florida all-star game this past weekend.
Chekwa holds a 3.2 GPA and scored a 23 on the ACT.
