Housteau Chat Archive: Dec. 30

Gary Housteau stopped by this afternoon to talk recruiting as well as give some Fiesta Bowl thoughts. We have a transcript below.

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 1:09:29 PM)
Merry Christmas and Happy New Years to everyone!

buckgrad (Dec 30, 2005 1:10:51 PM)
Back at you Gary, pumped for the game Mon.

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 1:10:51 PM)
Hi buckgrad...I'd love to be in Tempe right now. Here's to a great game and a big win...a huge win...on Monday!

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 1:11:25 PM)
Bragging rights, recruiting...a lot is at stake in this game!

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 1:12:45 PM)
Let's hope that Donte Whitner and Ashton Youboty follow Brady Quinn's lead and stick around for another year! But we have to remember that they will do what is best for them and their families whether we think they should stay or not!

buckgrad (Dec 30, 2005 1:13:54 PM)
Gary, have to start the chat off right with the weekly question for you, still confident the big 3 Glenville kids will be Buckeyes? Thanks

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 1:13:54 PM)
I sure am! My position hasn't changed on these kids since the day I did that photo shoot with them for the cover of Ohio High...and even before!

Poz79 (Dec 30, 2005 1:15:35 PM)
Gary, have you heard anything new regarding Thaddeus Gibson?

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 1:15:35 PM)
Hi Poz...I keep prodding and poking every chance I get. Thaddeus had a hoop tournament the past two days at Euclid so I didn't bother to try for an update. I will call him before I leave for San Antonio to see if he'll tell me anything new. I understand the scores should be known by now from the Dec. 10 test so I think he should have a better idea where he stands.

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 1:17:05 PM)
I'm guessing if we don't hear good news about his recent test score any time soon, then there might not be any good news to tell. But until I speak with him directly it would all be speculation and innuendo on my part. The consensus is that everybody loves the kid to land at OSU if he can get the academic part under control.

labsbeabmm (Dec 30, 2005 1:19:36 PM)
unlike many other OSU fans I root for Mich. as a rep of the big ten once the results are not detrimental to the Buckeyes. I think it detracts form our record and the Big Ten when our conference loses to a mediocre team like Neb.

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 1:19:36 PM)
I understand your position labsbeabmm but there is not one day out of 365 that I ever root for Michigan. Michigan fans are arrogant, recruiting is always contested year round...there is no logical reason for me to root for Michigan. The results of the Bowl game are the results of the Bowl game. The year is over. The conference is what it is. I just hope Carr is able to hang on to his position. Smile!

Poz79 (Dec 30, 2005 1:23:47 PM)
Any chance Ted Ginn Sr. can help sway Wallace and Ausberry toward the Buckeyes while in San Antonio?

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 1:23:47 PM)
Poz I spoke with Ginn at length on Wednesday night as I'm preparing for my San Antonio trip and he is aware that Wallace is still considering Ohio State. Ginn is taking this opportunity very seriously and is not about to overtly make an attempt to sway Wallace during the week. He will get to know him real well and make a few OSU overtures in his direction. That's not his main purpose however...to be honest with you. But Ginn is a walking OSU advertisement anyway. That will be obvious to Wallace and Ausberry and the rest of them.

buckgrad (Dec 30, 2005 1:26:04 PM)
Gary, whats the story with Adjepong? Thought I heard Steve say he is a VT lean, but I also hear it down to OSU and UM. Whats our odds. Thanks

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 1:26:05 PM)
Let's call it 33 percent just to be fair about it. I've heard from one solid source that he really like VT. I've heard from others like Steve that he likes OSU and Michigan. Chris Wells told me that he though highly of Adjeong on their official visits together. Wells thought OSU had/has a good chance with him. I don't really know to be honest so I'll say 33 percent right now. I haven't heard anything solid to pass along yet.

bigskybuckeye (Dec 30, 2005 1:28:06 PM)
Gary,Why are the Buckeyes wearing their white uniforms? Their the higher seeded team. I've noticed all higher seeded teams in the bowl games are wearing away jerseys.

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 1:28:06 PM)
Hi bigskybuckeye...it is my understanding that ND was the selection committee's first choice of the two teams and hence they are the home team. OSU will once again play the pauper's role of the two teams at the Fiesta Bowl. I would so dearly love to see them in Red since Ohio State and our fans basically own Sun Devil Stadium!

avluey (Dec 30, 2005 1:30:06 PM)
gary, who looks to be the big winner in the Army AA game?

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 1:30:06 PM)
Hi avluey...I'll have a chance to break it down better once I get there when I start to see some of the players. I'll have a better idea some time next week.

AZBUCK (Dec 30, 2005 1:34:03 PM)
Gary, are we going to see any possible surprises in our favor in the recruits that our left?

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 1:34:03 PM)
I wouldn't really count on it. Ausberry would be a pleasant surprise if he picks OSU but Steve for one seems to think that's not even remotely possible. Wallace would be nice as well. Some say he's a lock for Penn State but we shall see. I still think OSU has a good shot with him. I haven't heard from anyone that they already know one way or the other. He's still in play as far as I've heard. If you want to call the Florida player of the week a surprise then go ahead. I still look at those guys as our plan B recruits for the most part. Miller would be nice but again not really surprising. I like Lyons personally...he would be a nice get if Ausberry goes to USC. Johnson from CA would be a nice surprise...still in on him. Johnson from Mooney would be a surprise if he makes the grade...and so on.

John (Dec 30, 2005 1:37:19 PM)
Who would you compare Chris Smith to? Amd do you think he is a strong OSU lean?

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 1:37:19 PM)
Hi John...I will go out of my way to have an extension conversation with Chris Smith next weekend in San Antonio. I've developed a bit of a relationship with him already and I hope to begin harvesting some good information from him. I've seen him at OSU and at Michigan for games. He's a strong arm kid but I don't think he's a strong lean anywhere at this moment. I haven't seen enough of him to make a comparison but I do know that he's mobile for a big guy. I'll know more about him next week.

Big Ten 0-1 (Dec 30, 2005 1:41:02 PM)
I'm joining a little late so I don't know if this has already been addressed, but did Michigan's loss surprise you. Weren't they the most favored Big Ten team. It doesn't bode well for us when the Big 12 is already off to a 2-0 start

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 1:41:02 PM)
Hi Big Ten...I personally don't care how the rest of the conference performs. Michigan choked...what else can you say. Is it embarrassing from a conference standpoint? Perhaps! But it's good any time that Michigan gets embarrassed if you're an Ohio State fan. I really don't see the connection with the Big 12 going up 2-0 other than it feeds a certain perception! At this point in the season...who cares.

bigskybuckeye (Dec 30, 2005 1:45:54 PM)
Gary, What do you remember about Josh Swogger from Y-Town C-M? He's transferring from Wazzu to the Montana Grizzlies.

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 1:45:54 PM)
Hi bigskybuckeye...Swogger played for Ursuline if that C-M was a reference to Cardinal Mooney. I remember him as a strong arm quarterback for Jimmy Vivo who was a part of that state championship team for the Irish in 2000. Irizarry was a sophomore on that team and Ferguson was a junior. Swogger just fell off the map at Washington State after his injury and he checked into transferring to YSU but they're pretty set at QB and Heacock wouldn't promise him he would be named as the starter in the spring. Montana did that and he went there. Plus his wife is still a student or a nurse or something in Washington so it made sense for him to stay out there. Swogger played well in the North-South game in 2002 I believe it was.

NEOLeo (Dec 30, 2005 1:49:26 PM)
Does Carpenter bring an emotional advantage to the team that is big enough to get them over the top, even if he's not his usual self?

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 1:49:26 PM)
Carpenter is a football player NEOLeo and a very emotional performer on the field. A direct contrast to the unassuming A.J. Hawk. I really don't see him playing if he's not 100 percent or anywhere close to it. I'm sure he'll dress and be ready to go...but I would be pleasantly surprised if he's in the game. I don't think he could possibly be anywhere near the performer he would be if he never suffered the injury. He wouldn't be his usual self and wouldn't be a major help to the team. Laurainitis and Lawrence Wilson will really have a chance to shine in his absence. I would love to see Carpenter play but he has a long future in the NFL to be concerned with as well.

avluey (Dec 30, 2005 1:52:11 PM)
Other than Hines, any other Tarblooders get offers next year?

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 1:52:12 PM)
Kyle Jefferson would need divine intervention to get an offer from OSU at this point but he has to be considered as a potential recruit. The measureables are certainly where they need to be...the heart needs to develop further. I think this is the year, barring any major transfers in, that Glenville takes a giant step backwards. Their JV was the bomb but the varsity experience is very limited with those guys. Sturdivant is a good player but Ivery much doubt that he would be ticketed for OSU. Hines is a stud.

buckgrad (Dec 30, 2005 1:55:10 PM)
I posted in the forum what everyone thought our chances are of possibly getting back in touch with Boren, Mixon or Mathews (wr from FL). Think Tressel will try to give them a call or is it a lost cause. Thanks

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 1:55:10 PM)
Lost cause buckgrad. I can't really speak about Mathews but I would highly doubt that Boren or Mixon are in play at this time. I would like to see Boren play well in the Army game because I really liked the kid when I got to know him last spring. I can assure you all he was a strong OSU lean at one time although that's all moot at this point.

oogatz (Dec 30, 2005 1:59:49 PM)
Gary: Is D. Johnson going to make it and are there any surprises in store from Ohio for this year's class?

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 1:59:50 PM)
Hi oogatz...from what I know at this time, it does not look like D. Johnson will make it but they're still holding out hope that he does at some point anyway. Gibson would really be the only other surprise for Ohio State if he manages to meet OSU standards. I would say Gibson is more like than Johnson of the two. Whether either makes it or not is possibly a whole other story.

Big Ten 0-1 (Dec 30, 2005 2:03:39 PM)
Gary I've heard a lot of hype about Jordan Mabin from Nordonia, and I've watched him play several times from the sideline, and while I think his is a good player, he does not appear to be a BIG TEN type. I seen several backs at other schools that seem more explosive.

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 2:03:39 PM)
Hi Big Ten...I only saw him play once this year against D-I Brush and I may have picked the best game that I possibly could have to see him play. He did it all on offense, defense and special teams that night. I like Mabin, I've been following his progress closely for two years now and I'm impressed. I think he's a quick, speedy, slasher who isn't afraid of contact. Give him room and he's gone. He's a home run hitter maybe more so than any back in Ohio returning. I can see him at Pitt, or any Big 10 school that is smart enough to take a chance on him. He's a solid defender also but he's a running back for sure.

buckgrad (Dec 30, 2005 2:08:24 PM)
Gary I get the feeling as a fan that the game vs. ND will have a big impact on recruiting for the next 1-3 years. Whats your take?

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 2:08:24 PM)
buck...Weis has already put Ohio in play in a big way by getting Parris and Ryan from Ignatius this year. Robbie Parris is a flat out stud if you ask me. He and Daven Jones from Glenville are my two receivers in Ohio from this past year. I think both could be playing in the NFL someday because of their ability and God given talent. If Notre Dame steals Ben Martin than they can get anybody. I hope and I trust that the OSU staff can see how important it is to go all out for Martin. He would be the player we would all regret losing to Notre Dame. There would be no fence around Ohio any longer if they steal Martin. That said. OSU doesn't have enormous success OOS anyway so it won't impact OSU nationally but it could hurt things in state no question.

rbuck (Dec 30, 2005 2:10:18 PM)
Gary, Do you believe what Mike Frank said yesterday about the crowd being 55/45 OSU?

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 2:10:18 PM)
Yes I do rbuck. I'm getting e-mails already from people that I know that are already out there and it's an OSU edge at this point. But maybe it's just that fact that they're hanging at OSU strongholds. Our fans certainly know all the hotspots by now. It will be very Christmasy no matter how the final ratio turns out.

boulderbuck1 (Dec 30, 2005 2:13:34 PM)
how's the Glenville pipeline looking next yr? What names should we be paying attention to?

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 2:13:34 PM)
Next year is a down year as I've already stated. Eddie Mason is a senior name to watch next year also but he's really small. He's a heck of a football player though and a great track performer. Eric Halsiah (spelling) is another corner to watch for. Their sophomore class from this year is pretty loaded.

Poz79 (Dec 30, 2005 2:20:25 PM)
What current Ohio high school jrs. do you think get offers right after signing day?

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 2:20:25 PM)
I believe Duane said Evege already has an offer and Olgesby has an offer also as of now. I think Martin and Torrence should get one sooner rather than later. I would not be surprised if both Gamble and Dailey get an offer. Clifford should get one if he doesn't already have one. I don't know if they will offer either Smith or Belton from Northmont...they might to see more of both of them. I don't think they will offer Mabin or Simpson or Morgan Williams or Danny Herron just yet either. They have to consider Nate Oliver but I'm not sure they will offer. I also happen to love Kyle Hubbard from Ed's but I doubt he gets an offer. I also like Vince Harris from La Salle, he was pretty impressive in the game I saw him play last year but I doubt they offer early. And I liked the nose tackle Caleb Lipsey a lot but I doubt he gets an offer. I don't see too many offers going out on signing day.

buckgrad (Dec 30, 2005 2:24:15 PM)
Whats Ted Sr. saying about Whitner? I would imagine he has his opinion and talks to Donte often. Any idea on what his advice to Donte is or might be?

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 2:24:15 PM)
Good question buckgrad...Ginn will have a talk with Donte after the season. Keep in mind that Ginn wants what is best for Donte but he also wants what's best for the Buckeyes. If the money is strong that will be the determining factor. Remember Ginn's son will be making the same decision next year so he can't really be hypocritical in his advice to Whitner. If Ginn Jr. has any kind of a decent season next year I know that he'll be gone so if you want to substitute the name of Whitner for Ginn this season then you are free to make that leap. I personally think Whitner should come back like so many of you all do but that and a quarter won't even get you a cup of coffee any more...or a phone call from a payphone!

rbuck (Dec 30, 2005 2:26:29 PM)
Gary, I saw Ben Martin play last night against OJ Mayo & Co., Wow! he can run and jump, but not much of a Basketball player. Does a win on Monday go a long way towards getting him?

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 2:26:30 PM)
I have to say no rbuck...either way. I think his recruitment is independent on the outcome of the game but sure it's another reason if he wants it to be. I would have loved to have seen that game rbuck! You can probably see the potential in him as a football player from watching him on the hardwood I would guess.

labsbeabmm (Dec 30, 2005 2:30:11 PM)
OSU is currently ranked about 14th in recruiting, in part because of the low numbers. Do you see us finish in the top ten?

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 2:30:11 PM)
labs..I would think Rose, Small, McCarthy and a few other big names like Johnson from CA, Wallace, Ausberry and Gibson...if OSU would land any one of them...would barely get them into the top 10. I think Wells and Smith playing well in the AA game would bolster those rankings also. But I don't put any stock in any of those ratings so I'm not really the guy to ask about that. If a player can play football...I really don't care how he's ranked by whom.

buckgrad (Dec 30, 2005 2:31:40 PM)
Simply, in your opinion, will Carpenter play at all Mon. Thanks

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 2:31:41 PM)
Please take this answer for what it's worth...nothing...my gut says no or that he shouldn't if he's not even close to being the Bobby Carpenter we all know him to be. So my answer as an opinion only is NO.

rbuck (Dec 30, 2005 2:33:34 PM)

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 2:33:34 PM)
On the radio show last night I was on in Youngstown...I went with 34-24 Ohio State. There's no question ND will have their moments on offense even against OSU's vaunted defense. Just the fact that I don't see OSU ever getting a comfortable lead or the that they may even be playing from behind will not allow JT to hit the conservative button at any time and when he lets his players play on offense good things happen.

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 2:37:10 PM)
By nature, JT plays not to lose first and foremost....but when he lets his playmakers play on offense... now that TS doesn't only look to one guy and then run... good things happen. If TS plays well then ND has no shot to win. After watching him do what he did to Michigan in the first quarter and the fourth quarter against Michigan, I'm more confident in him than I have ever been. If JT plays to win and the defense only contains Quinn...I see OSU coming out with a big win. If they keep ND in the game, then they're in trouble. Step on the accelerator from the begging JT and don't let up. Go for the jugular!

nncnnc3 (Dec 30, 2005 2:40:08 PM)
Gary, why is Cordle so often being projected as the starter at center next year? I know he has shown promise but I think Datish has got to be the clear cut starter there. We have too much depth and experience across the line to think that Cordle is going to jump in as the starter. Plus Datish can make the line calls.

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 2:40:08 PM)
Good observation nncnnc3...But Cordle must have proven his metal early on when he first came to OSU because he seemingly earned the respect of the staff at center before he was injured. But that's why Datish is so valuable to this group. If he doesn't start at tackle, guard or center next year, he can back up all three and Ohio State would be in good shape in any instance. His experience is valuable to the line as a starter or backup next year. I think he plays somewhere...maybe at guard next to Boone at left tackle.

rbuck (Dec 30, 2005 2:47:40 PM)
Gary, Do you like the idea of banking some schollies for next year due to the glut of talent in OHIO?

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 2:47:40 PM)
I don't really see the gluttony of talent that other people are really seeing in Ohio next year. The O-line harvest is nowhere near this year. the RBs lack a true Chris Wells recruit although Morgan Williams seems to be the best overall of the lot. I think Hosea Simpson will be the biggest surprise of them all. The defensive line prospects are once again few and far between outside of Martin and Eric Thomas. The QB prospects with Smith, Belton and Garner are very top heavy but so were they last year and look how that turned out. The DB class is strong with Gamble and Oliver and Torrence and Clifford and Evege at the top. Dailey could settle in at LB possibly. Sure there is top 10 talent in Ohio maybe top 15 but then it's not really strong after that. Dan Ifft had great receiving numbers last year but not a lot of top notch receivers out there. I hope the class gets stronger as we go on but I don't think OSU needs to bank any for that reason.

rbuck (Dec 30, 2005 2:49:54 PM)
Do you see ND being any more of a factor recruiting Ohio than they were in the late 80's and early 90's?

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 2:49:54 PM)
No question....in a big way. Weis and his staff are relentless as opposed to JT's soft-sell, this is Ohio State approach. It works for JT but he may have to let the rest of his staff turn it up a notch to compate ND and also Michigan staff who can be relentless. Loeffler is a perfect example.

avluey (Dec 30, 2005 2:52:29 PM)
is whitner's younger brother developing into a D1 prospect?

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 2:52:29 PM)
Slowly, to be perfectly honest with you. I was hoping for more out of him this year and didn't really get it. He was only a sophomore and he certainly has the potential but I was hoping he would have arrived already this past season and he didn't. He's very mild mannered in his demeanor and Donte really needs to help his younger brother in that aspect. Yes I do see him as a future (Buckeye) D-I prospect.

rbuck (Dec 30, 2005 2:53:18 PM)
What about these Michigan players IF Loyd gets fired?

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 2:53:19 PM)
He's not going to get fired. At least let's hope he doesn't! Smile!

avluey (Dec 30, 2005 2:56:39 PM)
of the incoming linebackers that are committed or OSU "leans", which are more likely to be MIKEs?

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 2:56:39 PM)
Homan is another Hawk on the outside and I really think that Moeller can be a smaller version of Bobby Carpenter. I guess McCarthy, just because of his size alone, would be the likely Mike candidate. Gibson would be more in the Carpenter mold as well if he were to become a Buckeye but he more than the other two could play any of the three positions. I don't know enough about Johnson's game but my guess is that he could play Mike or Sam really well.

rbuck (Dec 30, 2005 2:58:23 PM)
I read something on Joey D'Andrea on JJ Huddle, will he end up at tOSU?

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 2:58:23 PM)
I wouldn't mind seeing that...I should have put his name with Martin and Eric Thomas earlier...nich job on D'Andrea rbuck. Central Ohio really needs to pick up their end of the slack with players going to OSU.

Guest (Dec 30, 2005 3:01:08 PM)
Gary, I'm down here in Fort Lauderdale now. Lots of speedy skill guys. Bucks looking at any of them?

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 3:01:09 PM)
FranDavanzo...sure the staff is looking at Pierre-Louis and St. Jean and Robinson among others. I'm not sure what to think about the late push into the florida harvest now. I trust the staff knows what their doing.

avluey (Dec 30, 2005 3:03:31 PM)
Gary, who do you think will be the offensive, defensive, and ST MVP's of the game?

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 3:03:32 PM)
TS and Brady Quinn on offense, A.J. Hawk and Victor Abiamiri on defense... and TGII on special teams.

boulderbuck1 (Dec 30, 2005 3:06:27 PM)
I saw some stupid article on cnn/si about the top college recruiters. They had Weis and Urban right on the top, w/ JT as an honerable mention. How BS is this? You would think that going to BCS games, A MNC and contending every year in the big Ten would show people that despite star rankings, what matters the most is potential and heart. For every 5* Ted Ginn, there is a 3* Omar Jenkins, Thoughts?

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 3:06:27 PM)
As long as JT takes care of Ohio boulderbuck, I really don't care where he's ranked. Sure OSU needs to get OOS players and JT's connections run deep florida...he recruited that state a lot at YSU so the coaching connections have long been established. If JT takes care of Ohio and does well in Pennsylanvia, Florida and on the east coast, then that is all that OSU fans need to be concerned with. Who cares how is ranked!

GaryHousteau (Dec 30, 2005 3:15:07 PM)
Have a great weekend, a great New Year, enjoy the Buckeye game with some of your best friends or family members, root hard for Ohio State no matter what the score is and then enjoy the other two Bowl games afterwards. Next Saturday watch the U.S. Army All-American Bowl from San Antonio and enjoy seeing Chris Wells, Connor Smith and Rob Rose in action. And keep an eye out for Ted Ginn Sr. on the sideline. If throws his hat any moment during the game then you know that Ginn is 100 percent healthy and he's back to his old self. But being an all star game I think he'll hold on to his hat anyway. Here's to hoping that Rose and Wallace pull OSU hats out of their bags during the game and that may Ausberry would do the same. TGII will not be at the Army game according to his dad. I'm going to publish a daily diary of my trip to San Antonio. I should have tremendous access to information with Ginn being the head coach so I really am going to try to take advantage of this opportunity. I hope you will be a regu
