Chat Transcript - Duane Long (5/23)

Duane Long joined us on the afternoon of 5/23 for a Bucknuts Fan Club chat... here is a transcript of the chat.

Kirk (May 23, 2002 2:23:58 PM)
Hi Duane!

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:24:04 PM)
Made it.

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 2:24:13 PM)
Me too!

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:24:13 PM)
Let's roll.

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 2:24:47 PM)
Who will be the next commit, Duane?

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:25:29 PM)
Irizarry has slowed things down but I bet he is next. I don't see a bunch of early verbals this year.

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 2:25:48 PM)
Because we're being more selective?

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:26:36 PM)
The number of offers is down so there will be less chance of numbers of verbals but mostly I think it is just an individual thing.

buckboy (May 23, 2002 2:26:11 PM)
Is Irizarry getting pressed from ND?

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:27:15 PM)
Irizarry is getting pressed by everyone this side of the Mississippi. The academics of ND is very appealing to him. This is a 4.0 student.

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 2:27:54 PM)
What major is Irizarry interested in pursuing?

MrBucknuts (May 23, 2002 2:28:07 PM)

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:29:03 PM)
Materials engineering or another branch of engineering. A plus for Ohio State.

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:28:34 PM)
One thing to keep in mind is that this is a victory like last year when D'Adrea eliminated Michigan. Notre Dame being # 2 is better than PSU being # 2. They were.

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 2:28:46 PM)
I would think that engineering would be a toss up between the two schools, maybe even favor tOSU.

Kirk (May 23, 2002 2:28:05 PM)
Between Marcel Frost and Irizarry, if one verbals to OSU, what do you think the other will do?

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:29:37 PM)
I don't know if that will have an impact on Frost.

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:30:18 PM)
I don't know if the Buckeyes back off either. Frost is an outstanding DE prospect. He had 12 sacks but played the position for the first time last year.

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 2:30:08 PM)
Do you think that Darrin Paige will end up at a MAC school?

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:30:45 PM)
Michigan really likes Paige. Any MAC school that gets him will get a steal.

buckboy (May 23, 2002 2:30:11 PM)
It appears that coach T has involved the various university professors in showcasing academic areas. Any thoughts on that?

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:31:31 PM)
I think that bringing in the professors shows a commitment to the education of these players. I couldn't be happier about that.

buckboy (May 23, 2002 2:32:15 PM)
That is a technique he used at YSU. He believes in it, and it works!

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:34:09 PM)
It can be nothing but a positive. For those that are serious about getting an education it hits home and for those just interested in playing football they are on notice from the start. You will have to go to school here too.

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 2:31:02 PM)
You really think Paige is that good?

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 2:31:24 PM)
If UM offers, I'm sure he'll go there, he seems to really like them.

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:32:09 PM)
Paige is a really nice player. I don't know about the Big 4 but he is definitely a lower tier Big 10 talent.

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 2:33:04 PM)
Any more on the academic situation for Morris or Smith?

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:34:42 PM)
Smith will at least be a partial. Like I said on the boards, the coaches do not seem to be worried about Morris.

DaveInRburg (May 23, 2002 2:33:21 PM)
what's the chatter on the OL these days? Seems to be a buzz starting about it.

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:36:02 PM)
Watch for Mike McGlynn from Austintown Fitch. He missed last year due to academics but is back and looks great. We had him as a sophmore but when he lost a year it hurt him. He is the hottest OL prospect in the state. Also Ty Hall.

BobbleHead (May 23, 2002 2:35:30 PM)
Who would you compare Ronnie Borquin to? Is there any room for him in our class?

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:36:47 PM)
Bourquin is a lot like Rob Kelly but may be a better pure athlete. I don't know about him in this class.

Kirk (May 23, 2002 2:35:44 PM)
Duane, give us a preview or your personal top recruiting targets... who do you want to see OSU land the most?

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:37:28 PM)
Prescott Burgess, Donte Whitner, David Patterson, Louis Irizarry and Dareus Hiley.

DaveInRburg (May 23, 2002 2:37:32 PM)
Mike McGlynn, that's a name I haven't heard

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:37:59 PM)
He missed last year. Great looking 310 lber who is agile enough to play 1st base in baseball.

DaveInRburg (May 23, 2002 2:38:05 PM)

Kirk (May 23, 2002 2:38:09 PM)
Cecil Fielder?

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 2:38:18 PM)
LOL Kirk!

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:38:36 PM)
Hits home runs like Fielder.

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:38:43 PM)
Tape measure jobs.

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 2:38:47 PM)
Duane - you planning to travel around Ohio to look at recruit ala Lemming?

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:39:15 PM)
I get so much tape I really don't need to but I like to take in a game every week anyway.

Mucram (May 23, 2002 2:38:48 PM)
Duane do you see Cie Grant and Robert Reynolds as solid OLB starters or could one of the young freshmen move into that role?

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:40:15 PM)
I see Grant and Reynolds as very solid but lets keep in mind Grant is a senior and so is Wilhelm and Reynolds will be a junior. We need to see the youngsters step in and get seasoned.

buckboy (May 23, 2002 2:39:01 PM)
Duane, how about an eval on Ohio qb's.

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:41:39 PM)
I am liking Brady Quinn more and more. Don't be surprised if we have a new # 1 QB in Ohio when OFS comes out again in July. I really like Sean Clayton at Poland Seminary and a kid named Terrell really impressed me on tape recently. He is from Cleveland University School.

nbuck (May 23, 2002 2:39:10 PM)
duane has the columbus lineman's stock gone down since he reportedly weigh's 330 now?

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:42:27 PM)
Nbuck, I have not heard Henderson weighed 330. He told me he weighed 330 last year and is now at 330. We will see at camp.

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 2:40:52 PM)
Kirk - are you going to post schedules of the recruits again? That was useful to all, it seemed, that wanted to catch a game. I got to see Burgess and some running back last year because of that.

Kirk (May 23, 2002 2:42:28 PM)
That was OFS that posted the schedules last year... I have looked at them already this year. Columbus residents will be able to catch Ursuline and all their stars this year... I think they play Westerville North or something. Ignatius, of course, travels all around the state and I think goes to St. X as well as a Columbus school this year

DaveInRburg (May 23, 2002 2:41:08 PM)
Duane, you have commented a couple times that the coaches are quiet about Morris's eligibility, and you think that is good, why?

nbuck (May 23, 2002 2:41:17 PM)
this may have been asked but what lineman if they preform well at camps could be offered?

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:45:05 PM)
I think McGlynn tops the list right now.

DaveInRburg (May 23, 2002 2:42:28 PM)
ok Duane, explain the Brady Quinn thing. How does he move up without playing in a game? have you seen a lot of new tape or something?

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:44:13 PM)
I have seen Quinn and almost made him # 1 anyway. Now he has a better offer list than Boeckman. You have to listen to what the schools are saying.

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:43:13 PM)
I think I would hear behind the scenes rumblings if Morris were in trouble.

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 2:43:41 PM)
Define "behind the scenes".

DaveInRburg (May 23, 2002 2:44:17 PM)
Rossford with a jab to the stomach

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 2:44:49 PM)

buckboy (May 23, 2002 2:44:56 PM)
Kirk and Duane, will you be covering the summer camps?

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:45:50 PM)
We have to cover the camps. If I miss them I miss on far too much info. That is why we are doing OFS mid-July.

Kirk (May 23, 2002 2:46:04 PM)
We are going to see what we can do with the summer camps this year... still working on that

nbuck (May 23, 2002 2:45:39 PM)
duane what scenario could you invision that terrance graves will be offered?

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:46:25 PM)
I think we have to see a back leave for Graves to be offered.

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 2:46:36 PM)
Duane - do you work alone, or do you get Kirk or anyone else to help you?

DaveInRburg (May 23, 2002 2:46:43 PM)
Duane, if you need the assistance of someone without an eye for talent, I would be happy to help out.

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:47:52 PM)
I would very much appreciate your input. We do listen to fans. Some do have an eye for talent. What you say may jive with what someone else says and that adds up.

Kirk (May 23, 2002 2:48:00 PM)
Duane already has a couple of people without eyes for talent in myself and Mr. Bucknuts :)

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 2:48:11 PM)

nbuck (May 23, 2002 2:47:36 PM)
daune are their any mike kudla type sleepers than osu is looking at that could pull the trigger and commit if offered?

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:49:11 PM)
Good question. Look at Raymond Edwards from Cincinnati Woodward. He is really getting alot of attention as a DE now. Also Andrew Crummey at Van Wert. he is an OL who could shake things up.

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:50:32 PM)
Ohio State really likes Edwards. Also Lukens who had a great offseason. Ran well in track while adding weight.

DaveInRburg (May 23, 2002 2:49:53 PM)
Duane, what's your feeling on Irazarry now? Think he is sliding back to a lock?

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:50:59 PM)
I feel very confident about Louis.

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 2:50:15 PM)
Are there any real freaks out there like Kudla and D'Andrea we're likely to get? If not, who is close to their physical level?

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:52:10 PM)
Dareus Hiley and Donte Whitner are both freaks but not in that strength sense. Whitner runs 4.3s without warming up. Hiley does things on the football field that will amaze you. Irizarry is really amazing for his size.

nbuck (May 23, 2002 2:51:08 PM)
are you staying put with only 3 lineman being taken this year and if there are any more tranfers or academic problems will osu add o lineman as they have spots available?

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:52:47 PM)
I still think 3 OLs unless there are more than 4 more kids out of here and that looks unlikely.

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 2:53:22 PM)
So good athletes, but not necessarily physical specimen like Kudla and D'Andrea?

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:54:00 PM)
No, there is really nothing like them in this class. Speed/Skill athletes, yes. Strength, no.

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 2:55:01 PM)
Oh well, we were fortunate to get Kudla and D'Andrea. I can't remember the last "freaks" we got. Katzenmoyer?

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:56:28 PM)
Not many freaks out there to begin with.

BobbleHead (May 23, 2002 2:53:17 PM)
this is going to be painful leaving some of these kids out

Kirk (May 23, 2002 2:54:34 PM)
I guess OSU can't get them all, but this year, BobbleHead, you are right... with limited scholarships, OSU might pass on a top DB like Mike Phillips or DeJuan Tribble or Thatcher. You hate to see talent like that leave I guess

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:54:42 PM)
Don't remind me, Bobblehead. This is killing me. All these great kids and a good chunk will leave the state and there is nothing the Buckeyes can do about it.

DaveInRburg (May 23, 2002 2:55:28 PM)
but you can be sure Mussberger or one of them will chip in a few years down the road with "How did the Buckeyes let this kid get away"

Mucram (May 23, 2002 2:55:41 PM)
Duane if next year is year of the WR who leads that list?

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:58:08 PM)
I like Ernie Wheelwright at Walnut Ridge. Then you have Fred Davis at Toledo Rogers. Also MIles Williams at Fitch and Michael bell at Shaker Heights. The only problem is Wheelwright and Davis maybe outgrowing the position.

Hubbard (May 23, 2002 2:58:59 PM)
they will be possible TE's then?

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:00:34 PM)
Both Wheelwright and Davis are very physical. They both play defense and do it quite well. I see them as LBs if they continue to grow. Wheelwright could even grow into a DE. He is huge. He is 6-5 right now and I have heard 220 but I can't confirm that. He and Davis are both 210 right now as sophomores.

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 2:54:05 PM)
I can't believe we let ourselves get into this mess with the OL.

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:56:00 PM)
There was more to it than a bad job by Cooper as far as how bad the OL is. There is a lengthy drought of instate kids and as long as there is no NFL players drawing top out of state OLS is going to be difficult.

Kirk (May 23, 2002 2:57:09 PM)
Losing Munoz, Hall and Christophel was tough

nbuck (May 23, 2002 2:56:25 PM)
duane do you think osu will wait very long after camps to get boeckman to verbal or else offer quinn?

Duane (May 23, 2002 2:58:57 PM)
I can't shake a nagging feeling about Boeckman. He may want to see if Zwick redshirts.

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 2:56:53 PM)
What is Chattam's mood lately? I keep thinking that he'll leave.

BobbleHead (May 23, 2002 3:00:49 PM)
word around here was that Chattam's unhappiness had more to do with his girlfriend than football, he needed some stability but the position change upset that more, otherwise, he may have been more open to it

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:02:03 PM)
It looks like JT has really done a great job and getting these kids to believe and pull together.

buckboy (May 23, 2002 2:57:51 PM)
what is the reaction to strength coach Johnson by the current players and the recruits?

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:01:07 PM)
I have not heard alot about Johnson one way or another but those that do talk about him really like him and his program.

DaveInRburg (May 23, 2002 3:02:17 PM)
Nerd question for you Duane. What do you use to keep track of all of your info on these players? Is there some package you use, or just spreadsheets and such that you have put together?

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:02:53 PM)
I just use a word processor. I don't get too technical with it.

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:03:41 PM)
When you are talking to a coach or player you don't want to worry about fields. You just want to get the info down.

buckboy (May 23, 2002 3:03:44 PM)
I also think JT has done a fine job of getting the alumni players involved with the team activities.

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:04:42 PM)
Getting back to the issue of numbers and this class, I look at the class of 2003-2004 and it looks like things are going back to normal and it looks like there are going to be 27 scholies for that class.

nbuck (May 23, 2002 3:04:40 PM)
good year next year for offensive line?

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:06:20 PM)
No, next year is not a good OL class. It is not looking like an exceptional class at all. Very average. For Ohio it is very average.

BobbleHead (May 23, 2002 3:06:45 PM)
have you decided on an all-time favorite DE yet?

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:07:27 PM)
No, I am looking back at the classes. At first I was just looking at Ohio State then I realized that before JT there were players that left Ohio.

BobbleHead (May 23, 2002 3:07:52 PM)
haha, ok, thanks

nbuck (May 23, 2002 3:07:49 PM)
any vibes on crable yet,or is he going down to decsion day with his choice?

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:08:59 PM)
Crable is the real enigma of this class. I think it is Ohio State or Michigan and I can't really call it. I think his stock is slipping.

Hubbard (May 23, 2002 3:09:08 PM)
why's that?

DaveInRburg (May 23, 2002 3:09:13 PM)

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:10:02 PM)
There is a tendency to look at the positives of a player at first but then you start looking at the negatives. I think people are looking at the negatives more now.

nbuck (May 23, 2002 3:09:53 PM)
the kid from thomas worthington if he has a good time will osu offer or is jordan the man?

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:10:40 PM)
I know the Buckeyes are staying in close contact with Williamson. JT loves big receivers and this kid is a moose with speed.

nbuck (May 23, 2002 3:11:04 PM)
te moose or wr only?

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:12:15 PM)
Right now Williamson is a WR for sure. He could grow into a TE.

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:11:46 PM)
Crable is stable gradewise. His body is a big concern to some. He doesn't have the big frame but I don't know if he has the speed and the hips for LB. His lack of production bothers some.

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 3:12:24 PM)
Think we'll back off Crable?

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:12:44 PM)
I could see the Buckeyes backing off Crable. Definitely.

buckboy (May 23, 2002 3:13:02 PM)
What is your eval of Ivan Douglas and how about Fred Stirrup?

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:14:32 PM)
I have always liked Ivan Douglas. He has so little football under his belt. He is now at the ideal position for him RT. Give him time.

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:15:03 PM)
Stirrup remains to be seen. He looks great bodywise and seems to have grown up.

buckboy (May 23, 2002 3:15:37 PM)
Stirrup may be a reclamation project of JT's

Kirk (May 23, 2002 3:15:26 PM)
On the subject of the OL, do you think Rob Sims could be a contributor early?

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:17:09 PM)
I saw Rob Sims in a tape of another player recently and could not believe how much he has changed his body. I thought he was a surfire redhsirt but now I can't say that. He could play. It is all in his head.

nbuck (May 23, 2002 3:13:59 PM)
will osu go after two qb's next year specificaly the kid from dayton and urseline? reglardless of who commits this year?

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:16:11 PM)
With a full 25 I can see the Buckeyes going after both Clarke and Turner. This has been a chronic problem in the past. All these great WRs and CBs and RBs but no depth at QB. That needs to change.

Mucram (May 23, 2002 3:16:50 PM)
Duane do you think that Tim Anderson might get some All American honors or is All Big Ten more like it?

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:18:16 PM)
Anderson is definitely an All-American candidate.

DaveInRburg (May 23, 2002 3:17:29 PM)
duane, what negatives are showing up on crable? I have heard he doesn't have the greatest work ethic.

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:19:04 PM)
The things I mentioned just a minute ago are the things about Crable that are causing concern. I have not heard about his work ethic.

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 3:18:55 PM)
Any big junior safety prospects?

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:19:33 PM)
I really like Ronnie Bourquin but this is not a need position.

Mucram (May 23, 2002 3:19:38 PM)
By the time the Michigan game rolls around who do you think will be the starting QB and RB?

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:21:23 PM)
I think Reece is the starter for Texas Tech let alone Michigan. I think they stay with Krenzel until he sjows he cannot move the team. they have to want to redshirt Zwick. With this defense and the ability to run the ball I can see them looking for a QB who won't mistake this team out of game.

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 3:20:47 PM)
Hubbard - you stole my drink!

Hubbard (May 23, 2002 3:21:18 PM)
yes yes i did

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:21:43 PM)
We have a beer thief here. Chats over!!!

Mucram (May 23, 2002 3:21:55 PM)

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 3:22:17 PM)
Nothing like stealing someone's beer to end the chat!

Hubbard (May 23, 2002 3:22:24 PM)

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 3:19:44 PM)
Any other prospects I can keep an eye on in NW Ohio? So, Jr, etc.?

Hubbard (May 23, 2002 3:20:24 PM)
this may have been asked earlier and I'm not sure if you know, but who are some of the top Ol in the country?

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:23:31 PM)
I am still not up to speed on the national scene. Next time I hope to have more.

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:22:38 PM)
NW Ohio? Let me think about that one.

DaveInRburg (May 23, 2002 3:23:19 PM)
lets hope your sense of direction is better than some of the other recruiting guru's out there

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:24:06 PM)
Somebody really drop the ball recently?

DaveInRburg (May 23, 2002 3:25:19 PM)
yeah, someone (lemming I think) put some cities in the wrong part of the state

RossfordBuck (May 23, 2002 3:24:29 PM)
Would just like to target a few games to catch with some players. Will definitely see Darrin Paige play a few times.

Hubbard (May 23, 2002 3:24:52 PM)
I plan on going to a few Ursuline and Warren Harding games this year

buckboy (May 23, 2002 3:24:16 PM)
I have read that Lydell Ross was injured during spring practice. What is the injury?

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:24:54 PM)
I have not heard about that. I doubt he plays in the spring game if he was hurt and if I remember correctly he was on the field in the last series.

Hubbard (May 23, 2002 3:25:15 PM)
i heard he was hurt also, something nagging that wouldn't go away

buckboy (May 23, 2002 3:25:32 PM)
that's it....but what is it?

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:25:35 PM)
Send me an e-mail at and I will list a few players for you to check out. You have to tell me what you think.

DaveInRburg (May 23, 2002 3:25:36 PM)
Ross had hamstring and some back trouble

DaveInRburg (May 23, 2002 3:26:23 PM)
after the spring practices, he healed

DaveInRburg (May 23, 2002 3:26:44 PM)
I think most other players would have taken the yellow jersey

buckboy (May 23, 2002 3:25:46 PM)

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:26:51 PM)
Sounds like the everyday stuff that players go through.

DaveInRburg (May 23, 2002 3:27:16 PM)
the hamstring yes, i think the back was a little more serious

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:28:13 PM)
I see Childress having an impact in the return game definitely and I can see him on the field at the same time when they go to the spread with Hall and see some serious open field running.

What role do you see Bam Childress contributing?

DaveInRburg (May 23, 2002 3:27:54 PM)
herbstreit reported about him needing cortisone shots during the spring for his back

DaveInRburg (May 23, 2002 3:28:07 PM)
but from what I hear, he is 100% now

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:29:02 PM)
They would not have let him play the spring game if he was injured. That is the difference between hurt and injured.

Duane (May 23, 2002 3:30:18 PM)
It could be his pride is more injured than his body. By all acounts he is # 3 on the depth chart.

Kirk (May 23, 2002 3:29:03 PM)
