Hello and good afternoon everyone! Recruiting is winding down, the All-American Bowl was all good for Ohio State fans and I'm hear to see if I can answer any related questions to those two areas and others as well. Will he or won't he? I'm referring to Donte Whitner of course. I've been telling everyone for weeks now that he will but we should all officially know that answer some time today. So if you have any questions, let's rock and roll!
CWay (Jan 13, 2006 12:13:55 PM)
Hi Gary! What is the latest on Torrence bros.? Will they all transfer or ride it out at Canton South?
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 12:13:56 PM)
Hi CWay...I didn't even know that was an issue at this time. I'm sure Bill Green would know that answer. That's the first I've heard of it. They play Canfield in week two so I'm kind of hoping they remain at South. I have his cell number and I'll give it a ring and see if I can reach Devon during the chat.
jimmy (Jan 13, 2006 12:16:00 PM)
Where do you project Whitner to be drafted if he declares for the NFL? It seems like there are many players that will picked ahead of him. Thanks
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 12:16:00 PM)
Hi Jimmy, the list of juniors continues to grow no question. On thing that Donte believes in is that he will have great measureables come testing time and that he knows he is a relentless student of the game. You can be sure if he's still around in the third round and the Browns are on the clock that Mel Tucker will be pushing for this guy. I say he'll be gone on day one and that's a big deal for the Whitner family. His mom is a saint from what I understand. I've only met her one time and that was years ago at Glenville.
Hicks74 (Jan 13, 2006 12:18:02 PM)
Will Whitner pull a Doss ? Become a hero at the last minute ?
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 12:18:02 PM)
Hi Hicks...I really and truly wish that he would for selfish reasons...but then again I know Donte on a personal level outside of football and I'm so very happy for him and his family. Dewawn is a great kid and his half brother, Lindsay Whitten, who is beginning to pile up the offers though he remains committed to Toledo, is also. It will be a whole new world for Donte and his family and that's what college is suppose to help you achieve. God bless you Donte...he already has!
jimmy (Jan 13, 2006 12:20:51 PM)
Gary is there anything new with the status of Derrell Johnson?
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 12:20:51 PM)
Hi jimmy...I've called DJ a couple times recently and haven't reached him. I love the kid and his family, it may all be too little too late, but I know he loves Ohio State and will do whatever is possible to make that dream to play for Ohio State become a reality. I think it might still happen but there is still work to be done...and he would be willing to wait 6 months or a year from what I'm told. So maybe he could be a Lenix that has a better ending. I like the kid a lot as a football player and a person.
82dBuckeye (Jan 13, 2006 12:26:16 PM)
Good afternoon, Gary. Although it's not of immediate concern, what's your take on TGII staying all 4 years? Early indications were that he would, but now after his postbowl comments it seems as though he's leaning towards leaving after next year? What kind of input does Sr. have on this?
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 12:26:16 PM)
Hi 82nd Buck...no I don't see TGII staying four years at this production pace. Like Donte it would be a financial decision only to go early. That's why I would love to see TGII go both ways next year since it will be his last. I promise you he'd be every bit the cornerback that he is the receiver and kick returner. He's Teddy! It's what he does. He's better than the U.S. Postal service...he always delivers! Show me the money! It's about changing lives! He's a goner!
Hicks74 (Jan 13, 2006 12:27:40 PM)
Recruiting Staff seems to asleep at the wheel with people such as Udell and Fields. Quotes have them as "....interested, but have not heard from OSU in a while".
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 12:27:40 PM)
I don't enough about either of them to comment. I do believe from talking with people who know that Fields had some class room issues and maybe Ohio State has enough "at risk" kids of their own already?
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 12:28:36 PM)
I called Torrence on his cell phone and left him a message...I'll let you know if he calls back during the chat before we end. I'm guessing he's in school right now and not able to use his cell.
AZBUCK (Jan 13, 2006 12:33:01 PM)
What's your feeling on Small...are there grade issues? On Rivals site this morning he Small says "i'm basically going where Robert Rose is going..."
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 12:33:01 PM)
Hi AZBUCK...I've known the real deal about Small and Rose for a long time now. I try to tell people but they obviously trust other sources more than myself. Both have been Buckeyes from the get-go despite the rhetoric you hear. About grade issues...without dodging the question...yes there are some mild academic concerns with Rose and Small but it's nothing that would eliminate either of them. JT would like everyone who is close to bolster their GPA and test score if at all possible to make admissions that much easier.
jimmy (Jan 13, 2006 12:35:56 PM)
Would you think if Donte came back for his senior year and had a 2nd or 3rd team All American type year that it would improve his draft status and possibly guarantee him more money?
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 12:35:56 PM)
No question but the money is in front of him now and he wants to get paid for playing football so he can concentrate fully on his career. Donte has a laser-like focus and right now it's on making it big in the NFL. Remember he and Ashton arrived early at Ohio State for just this purpose at some point and now the time has come. Donte has been preparing for this for quite some time no matter what comes out of his mouth today. He's a great person, he really is, and I'm happy for him. Too bad Dareus Hiley didn't have the conviction that Donte Whitner has.
CWay (Jan 13, 2006 12:41:31 PM)
I watched Sidney Glovers film, and he hits like a ton of bricks. He also had good games against top competition like Glenville (Frieson, Adams) and Massilon (Gamble). Could Herron and Glover be the tye of players that could end the cold streak we have had in Warren?
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 12:41:31 PM)
Hi CWay...I've spoken with Danny Herron on more than a couple of occasions and believe it or not Ohio State is the school he would love to go to despite the school's Michigan influence and the fact his brother plays for MSU. Some people say he's too small but he's been producing for two years at Harding in a big way in the backfield...he can run and catch...so we shall see if OSU has any interest or not. Someone on the Harding staff told me that McDaniels thinks Glover can be the next Mike Doss and of course he coached Doss at McKinley. Glover is a quarterback because he's a great athlete, but he's going to be a solid safety and that's the position he will likely be recruited at. I spotted Herron and Glover at the Michigan and Ohio State game. I know Herron personally but I don't know Glover in the same manner. I would guess right now that Glover would have a better chance to make it to OSU than Herron....just a guess. Glover has been rumored to be looking around at other schools but I understand that he will likely be back at Harding this year.
BuckeyeBuck (Jan 13, 2006 12:44:34 PM)
Do we still have a chance with Colin McArthey (spelling?) ?
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 12:44:34 PM)
I would say yes but I don't have any first-hand information on that. My sources told me early on that after Gibson was sort of put to the side for a while that Mark Johnson and Bowman were the top two guys the staff was going after and they thought they would get both of them at one point. Obviously Bowman crossed them up but Johnson held true to form. Now Gibson is back in the picture, possibly but that's not a certainty either. I haven't spoken with McCarthy personally to know what he's thinking. I would like to see OSU get either Gibson or McCarthy.
Hicks74 (Jan 13, 2006 12:48:12 PM)
Steve mentioned Sam Young had interest in OSU and he was not even on their Prospects List - He mentioned he was from Centerville. Troubling with the lack of OL signees. ND cleaned up already on OL and are STILL in running for Young ..how about a late call there ?!!
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 12:48:12 PM)
Mr. Bucknuts and I met the Young family down in San Antonio. I have to honestly admit I was more impressed with Sam Young's video than I was from seeing him perform in person. He was no match at all for Rob Rose in practice. He's tall and lanky and will likely have a great career in college and possibly the NFL. Mr. Bucknuts and Sam's father were having a good old reunion of sorts. Sam has a younger brother Ben in the 9th grade who was there and he's 6-4 alreay. He told me he was a tight end last year I think. No change for Young coming to OSU at this late stage.
Mashedpotato (Jan 13, 2006 12:51:28 PM)
Can you explain the difference between core GPA vs. Overall GPA when it comes to qualifying? I'd love to know how it plays with these borderline cases (ala Gibson). Thanks!
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 12:51:28 PM)
Hi mashedpotato...I guess there are a certain list of core classes that student-athletes need to take to qualify for college and the guidance counselors are suppose to work with the kids to make sure they are taken within the course of their regular schedule. And of those courses they need to maintain a certain GPA if they want to go on to college. I don't know what the specific courses are but they need to be addressed in the four years at high school. I think someone like Steve would be able answer that question more articulately than the way I just did. Sorry.

Does the staff seem to be considering TGII to go both ways next year?
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 12:52:19 PM)
I sure hope so jimmy! TGII will not disappoint on defense and it's ultimately the position that he really identifies himself with.
Guest (Jan 13, 2006 12:53:45 PM)
Gary, real quick, is there a timeline on the weightroom renovations? I have been hearing about this for YEARS!
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 12:53:45 PM)
82nd asked about the weigtroom facility time frame...I believe there is one now because they're introducing to recruits these days. It seems like it's a work in process but I don't know the details. If they're selling it to the kids, I would guess it's within a four-year time frame.
Hicks74 (Jan 13, 2006 12:57:27 PM)
With only Pittman, Wells and Haw on scholarship and only adding C Wells so far, why the talk of Haw to defense ? The numbers are stronger at DB, no ? I would like to see what Haw can do.
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 12:57:27 PM)
I would truly love to see Haw compete his rear end off for playing time at running back this offseason. I haven't written him off yet. He's got too much size and speed to do that. I always favored Pittman over Haw in high school because I saw him play with my own eyes (same as Sutton to Ringer although I did see Ringer one game in high school) but I never thought the gap would be this wide between the two running backs. I hope Haw busts his tail end to earn some carries next year. Don't count him out. I personally haven't heard anything about him moving to defense.
MacAuley (Jan 13, 2006 1:02:08 PM)
Gary - Thanks for your time. Late to the chat and I don't know if this has been asked or beaten to death already... Do you have any concerns with O-Line recruiting this season?
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 1:02:08 PM)
Hi MacAuley...I'm just a bit disappointed with the results more than I am concerned. I personally would have went really hard after Thomas from the beginning after watching him play last year and I would have tried like heck to get a hand on the Brown issue before it got out of hand. I would have loved to have landed both of those two plus Smith and Browning. Browning is a lot better than some people give him credit for so I feel good about him where others might not. Connor Smith will recover nicely from his disappointing performance in San Antonio. He told me during the week he was concerned with pass blocking because they never really done it at Colerain. He was disappointed in himself after the game but I tried to cheer him up and he was much better later on. He's a good one no question.
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 1:02:57 PM)
So I'm not concerned but I am disappointed that because I thought it could have been a better offensive line haul than what Ohio State ended up with.
AZBUCK (Jan 13, 2006 1:07:48 PM)
How do you think we will end up with CB/S positions? Gant? How high are we on Stephens from Strongsville?
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 1:07:48 PM)
I personally like guys like Andre Amos at corner and Jamario O'Neal at safety. I think O'Neal could even be as good as anybody to ever play back there by the time that he's done. I don't know if everyone realizes just how big and fast J.O. is and he's a head hunter by nature. I love the kid and I'm sure he will be a star. I think TGII needs to play on defense on this year. He should be full-time on both sides of the ball from week one. He's Teddy. He can do anything. Ohio State will only have him for one more year so they better get as much use out of him as possible. I think the depth will be okay at corner and safety...just someone has to step up to earn the starting positions. They have to separate themselves...like Chris Wells did in San Antonio.
CWay (Jan 13, 2006 1:12:03 PM)
Lindsey Witton is listed at 6-4, 195. Is he a player that we should have been talking about more this year? Was he overlooked being on a stacked team? What level a talent is he?
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 1:12:03 PM)
Lindsay Whitten had a really good season once he was inserted into the lineup around week four. He is Donte's half brother, they have the same father even though the last names are different. Whitten has committed to Toledo but he's got offers from Connecticut, Akron and Indiana...and he thinks Iowa and Syracuse might deliver one as well. He would have loved to have had the chance to go to Ohio State and he wishes he would have came to Glenville earlier than just his senior year. I have an update coming on him at some point. He's a great young man and believes he will stick with Toledo because he already committed to them. He was a play maker for the Tarblooders at DE opposite Rob Rose. His best football is a head of him. Collinwood didn't prepare him any where close to his one year at Glenville.
Guest (Jan 13, 2006 1:15:14 PM)
With the improvement of Notre Dame this past year will the Ohio State recruiting philosophy change over the next few years due to increased competition?
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 1:15:14 PM)
Good question jimmy...I sure hope it does. I think everyone but JT himself need to become more aggressive. I personally like the direct contract between Weis and JT with recruiting. OSU needs more early offers no question to combat Notre Dame's aggressiveness. Ben Martin will be the watershed player to follow. It's funny that the ND scout people think they have Martin all locked up already...sounds like Weis' arrogance is not falling too far from the tree.
AZBUCK (Jan 13, 2006 1:16:29 PM)
How do we stand on getting W. Lyons or G. Matthews? Who would you like to have out of those 2?
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 1:16:30 PM)
I personally think Ohio State is in good standing with Wesley Lyons and will not be surprised at all if I'm attending his presser down the line to announce for OSU. I can't really comment about Matthews. I personally would like Lyons out of the two because I know what I would be getting.
Guest (Jan 13, 2006 1:19:18 PM)
Will we ever have enough depth on the Ol? If we had had enough depth, Simms and Mangold would not have been pressed into service as freshmen and they would have another year.
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 1:19:19 PM)
Hi platinum...you can never have enough offensive line depth no matter what. I like the depth with guys like Person and Skinner and Mitchum and Cordle, et al. Year three and four are when offensive lineman really begin to mature if they're not the ones like Boone that have it going on right out of the gate. I like the depth at offensive line and having a guy like Datish at the top with his versatility makes the depth even greater.
CWay (Jan 13, 2006 1:21:20 PM)
Excluding Ginn who is the one player from Glenville that you most wanted to see in an OSU uniform at this time of year (all years combined)?
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 1:21:20 PM)
Hi CWay...that's easy...Jamario O'Neal. I believe, like TGII, that he is destined for greatness!
platinum5 (Jan 13, 2006 1:24:12 PM)
Do you expect much improvement from Troy Smith? I'm a little pessimistic because (a) he is playing so well so there isn't much room for growth and (b) Krenzel did not seem to progress from his junior to senior year.
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 1:24:12 PM)
I expect much improvement in Troy as a quarterback. He has the skills obviously but he can be a better quarterback from a mental aspect. A lot better. He needs to learn the offense inside and out. I can see him becoming a much better quarterback if you can belive that.
GaryHousteau (Jan 13, 2006 1:35:19 PM)

Congratulations go out to Chris Wells and Rob Rose for the way they performed in the All-American Bowl...Rose was unblockable all week and he's a very confident individual so I knew he would do well. Wells is a beast. Maybe my all-time favorite high school player.
