Helwagen Chat: Jan. 20 Archive

Here are excerpts from Steve Helwagen's Chat from Friday afternoon. Bill Conley host a Chat at 1 p.m. Monday.

buckeyeinsaline (Jan 20, 2006 1:08:11 PM)
I've watched the replay of the Fiesta Bowl now 3 times. We should have beat ND by 35 points. NO CONTEST. We let a national championship get away from us this year.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:09:11 PM)
Yep, I don't like pinning everything on Troy Smith, but the inconsistency of the offense against Texas (5 FGs) and PSU (did more harm than good) killed them early in the year.

Hicks74 (Jan 20, 2006 1:09:18 PM)
Hi Steve - Your gut feeling on getting Larry Grant ? T Gibson ? I think if we even get 1-2 it looks slim on getting McCarthey or AJ Jones no ? Jones would make a nice "hammer" safety though.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:09:37 PM)
Jones verbaled to Florida on Jamie Newberg's show, I believe ...

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:10:45 PM)
Grant is a Buckeye, I feel, if the visit goes well. Gibson is probably OSU's as well if everything checks out. I have no idea what's up with McCarthy. He has been in communicado.

JimC (Jan 20, 2006 1:10:51 PM)
Hi Steve, any news on WR Matthews? Are we still in it?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:11:52 PM)
Duane just e-mailed me to say his sources now believe he will make an announcement on signing day between UM, OSU and FSU. He must want more time to truly commit himself, but UM is probably the one to beat. Coach Hazell must have had a good visit yesterday.

digger778 (Jan 20, 2006 1:12:00 PM)
How many spots do we have left? Who do you see taking them.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:13:54 PM)
They have 18 verbal commitments. I think they can still take 4 more players, one way or another. That is so hard so much to sort out. I don't know how OSU would rank them (i.e. whose verbal they would take over somebody else's). But Grant fills an immediate need and Gibson has such a high ceiling. Ditto for Kylan Robinson. Beyond that you have Lyons, Small, Mathews, Bowman, Troutman, Peters who are on the first page and maybe Elijah Fields if he visits. That's 10 guys for 4-5 spots. ...

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:14:47 PM)
My guess is Gibson, Grant almost for sure, one of the receivers and maybe 2 if Robinson goes elsewhere.

hondo (Jan 20, 2006 1:14:52 PM)
Steve, is McCarthy no longer considering the Buckeyes?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:15:06 PM)
I don't know. We have had no luck in reaching him. We'll keep trying.

buckeyeinsaline (Jan 20, 2006 1:15:11 PM)
I hope Troy Smith Learns what he COULD DO and keeps his nose clean in 2006.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:15:44 PM)
He seems to have a grasp of that. He has so much to gain from having a big 2006.

jabu349 (Jan 20, 2006 1:15:47 PM)
small is still a def right??

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:16:35 PM)
def, as in definite? I think he may sign, but whether that sticks or not will not be known until June or August. May go Lenix route, perhaps (hopefully not the part to UC, ha ha).

Bret Hoovler (Jan 20, 2006 1:16:40 PM)
Steve, if you could have one recruit out there that is still left unsigned committ to OSU, who would it be and why?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:17:45 PM)
I like Thaddeus Gibson a lot. He is like another Na'il Diggs to me. Starts out as a help as a rusher off the edge like Carpenter, then becomes a complete LB with coaching. But Grant can come in and help, perhaps, in 2006. Small and Robinson seem to be amazing talents.

KJ45 (Jan 20, 2006 1:17:54 PM)
If the Buckeyes land Grant and Gibson, to join the trio all ready commited, how does this years LB recuits rank nationally, and compare to past OSU LB classes?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:20:32 PM)
It would be a good to great class, maybe just shy of what they had with Carpenter, Hawk, D'Andrea, White. D'Andrea was the No. 1 LB in the country. But with the vacuum of talent at LB, this class is necessary, no doubt. They need all the options they can get.

TeddyHeisman (Jan 20, 2006 1:20:42 PM)
Hello Steve, and thanks again for doing this. How many schollies do you think we end up with? Its looking like that number will be higher than many had originally anticipated.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:21:14 PM)
My count says they have 22 open. They have 18 verbals. So that's 4 more they can take.

ginnagain (Jan 20, 2006 1:21:18 PM)
Steve , whats your best guess starting lbs and db next year??

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:21:46 PM)
OLBs probably Freeman and Laurinaitis, MLB D'Andrea if healthy with Hoobler also playing a lot. ...

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:22:15 PM)
Safeties Mitchell and O'Neal and CBs Jenkins and probably jeez ....

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:23:34 PM)
That other spot is such an unknown because none of those guys have ever played. Maybe Sirjo Welch if he comes to play and puts his off-the-field issues behind him. Brandon Underwood has the look of a big corner. Shaun Lane is a battler and then there is Andre Amos and Kurt Coleman, who should be there for the spring.

Hicks74 (Jan 20, 2006 1:23:41 PM)
Any rumors of surprise "walk-ons" like Aston or Moses ? Guys not worthy of a schollie now but just want to be Buckeyes....

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:24:41 PM)
Scott Weber the nice FB from Canal Fulton NW. He may walk on. I wonder about a Miles Schlichter as well (I have no knowledge about that, just talking off the top of my head ... Troy would have to give up No. 10 ... ha ha).

AZBUCK (Jan 20, 2006 1:24:52 PM)
Is there any lean for Matthews between OSU or scUM? Is there really a chance for us?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:25:32 PM)
I think he's still a Michigan lean. If they get him, it would be a bonus. But if they get Bowman and figure on Small or Derrell Johnson coming as well at some point, maybe it won't matter.

daytondawg (Jan 20, 2006 1:26:24 PM)
Any info. on how haw is progressing?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:27:05 PM)
As far as I know, he is still in their plans and will be in the fold for spring ball. It will be an important spring for him matching up carry for carry with Pittman and Chris Wells. I think he can still be a factor at Ohio State.

buckeyeinsaline (Jan 20, 2006 1:27:22 PM)
Steve, What current Div-1 coaches do you feel get the most from lackluster recruiting classes, other than West Virginia?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:27:28 PM)
Great question ...

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:29:11 PM)
Definitely West Virginia. Rich Rodriguez is quietly doing a nice job at WVU. Probably Louisville and what can you say about the job Alvarez did all these years at Wisconsin. They got 10 more wins and a bowl win this year. Minnesota on a lesser level. Iowa on a larger level. Virginia Tech definitely.

Guest (Jan 20, 2006 1:29:27 PM)
Steve, I have a really bad feeling that grades will end up pushing Small to USC. This is really tough to swallow when talking about a Tarblooder. I know he said he's "going to go wherever Robert Rose goes", but I just have a bad feeling. What is your take on this?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:29:41 PM)
TeddyHeisman worries that Small will sign with USC ...

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:30:26 PM)
I have not studied USC's scholarship situation. I think, as I've been saying, that Small will be a sign-and-follow kid. Yes, you tie up the scholarship until you know. But his talent and the connections to Glenville are worth it to take that risk.

daytondawg (Jan 20, 2006 1:30:43 PM)
Penn State is putting together a killer class. Do they have impact players we should look out for in 06?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:31:44 PM)
Recruit-wise, yes they'll mix in a few more of these freshmen. They'll have to because they graduate everybody by Posluszny on defense, pretty much. Derrick Williams and King will be back. I assume Morelli will be the QB. I think they'll be good, but not as great as they were this year.

jabu349 (Jan 20, 2006 1:31:48 PM)
how close was donte whitner to actually recondsidering going pro???

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:32:00 PM)
Not at all, from what I know. Done deal all the way.

jabu349 (Jan 20, 2006 1:32:10 PM)
the young d has me somewhat worried... will we veen have a top 15 d next yr.. i hope so cause u know what they say.. "offense sells tickets, defense wins championships"

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:33:04 PM)
Yeah, they can't afford drop-off like what happened from 1998 to 1999 and 2003 to 2004. That would not be good. The key is they will be strong up front. OK at the LBs and will need the key guys in the secondary to come through.

mackv (Jan 20, 2006 1:33:08 PM)
Small? Grades or what? Be specific.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:33:17 PM)
Yes, academics are an issue, I believe.

Guest (Jan 20, 2006 1:33:27 PM)
If for instance Peters, Bowman and Troutman declare OSU this week. Then what happens, how does the staff handle that situation? If you have your "higher" rated players waiting till signing day?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:33:46 PM)
starBucks asks what would happen if Peters, Bowman and Troutman all wanted to verbal ...

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:34:55 PM)
My guess is they would only take one of the two DL, Peters or Troutman. If Bowman wants in, they would take him and that might be it at WR (Other than Small).

jabu349 (Jan 20, 2006 1:35:06 PM)
do we have room for kylan robinson?? and dont u think he knows we have a 4 star from last yr, a jr 1000 yd rusher, and the #1 rb in the country... if i was a rb i porb wouldnt coem here.. what u think??

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:35:23 PM)
If he wants to come to Ohio State, I imagine they will find a way to make it work.

mackv (Jan 20, 2006 1:35:31 PM)
Is Bowman a safety net for Small falling through?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:35:43 PM)
yeah, somewhat. I just think they want some options at WR.

Bret Hoovler (Jan 20, 2006 1:36:02 PM)
Seems like Rose is now "the man". ESPN was quoted today as saying he's the kind of player to make a difference on Sundays! Do you see him stepping in and contributing right away? Also, of the guys we have committed, who's the next "blank"? I love Henton. Love his video. Could he be the next Smith and does he come in and jump into the #2 spot?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:37:31 PM)
We thought Wilson and Worthington would step in, but neither really did. Of course, they were coming into a situation with veterans ahead of them. If I had to guess, they will kick Patterson inside and play Richardson, Wilson, Barrow, Gholston, Rose and maybe Worthington outside. ...

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:37:59 PM)
Of the guys committed, Chris Wells is clearly the biggest deal. But I think Kurt Coleman can be a star at CB as well. ...

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:39:05 PM)
Agree on Henton. Tremendous potential and almost a Smith clone. It took Smith deep into his second year to realize he could maximize his ability by using the feet to keep plays alive. That's where the big plays (like Gonzo at Michigan) happen. Henton will start at square one and have to pick up on those nuances.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:40:21 PM)
He won't be the backup in 2006. He may not even play in 2007, but at some point he figures to make his mark.

spout (Jan 20, 2006 1:40:24 PM)
Worthington-Wilson injury update? Either med redshirt next year?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:41:56 PM)
I think it's too soon to tell. In some instances, they have to wait several weeks for swelling to go down before they operate. I imagine they will rehab during the winter, go light if at all in the spring and try and gear toward getting back in for the fall. There may be minor setbacks, so I think it's hard to predict them being impact players in 2006. Hopefully they can resume their careers as soon as possible. If they can't go in 2006, maybe NCAA would grant them an extra year.

buckeyeinsaline (Jan 20, 2006 1:42:18 PM)
Steve, Honestly I wish Vince Young would have stayed at Texas so that the Win by OSU next fall would have put us

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:42:42 PM)
Good point. But any win over the defending NC on their field will be huge. Just go try and win the game.

mackv (Jan 20, 2006 1:42:45 PM)
Is there anyone that enrolled early?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:43:02 PM)
Homan, for sure. Not sure on Coleman whether he was winter or spring. Wells is supposed to be spring.

jabu349 (Jan 20, 2006 1:43:07 PM)
if the same thing that happened to lenix happens to small, would this at all hurt our chances with future glenville boys??

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:43:18 PM)
No, this is mainly on Small's end, I believe.

Buckeye_Mike (Jan 20, 2006 1:43:30 PM)
Steve - Sirjo Welch seems big-time on ST. Do you see him stepping in and becoming a Will Allen type at some point?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:44:22 PM)
He's repped at corner. But the coaches want him to ramp up his reliability on and off the field. He can be a star if he puts it together.

jabu349 (Jan 20, 2006 1:44:44 PM)
u don't have the the former big ten fr of yr john kerr starting??

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:45:07 PM)
Well, I think he will compete for a job. The best guys will play.

Skilly McR (Jan 20, 2006 1:45:14 PM)
if grant comes to osu, is he a starter from day 1?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:45:27 PM)
Well, I think he will compete for a job. The best guys will play.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:45:37 PM)
I can't gauge what I haven't seen.

StrikeBuck (Jan 20, 2006 1:45:43 PM)
Steve, I noticed you didn't mention Derrell Johnson in your list of remaining targets. Could he be a greyshirt possibility? I hear his academic status is improving.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:46:18 PM)
yeah, I think he's in play as well for a spot here somewhere. He has made it plain he wants to be a Buckeye. Maybe the grayshirt route fits his scenario. I don't know.

PigMan (Jan 20, 2006 1:46:34 PM)
Sorry if this has been asked already, but I have two questions. First, is the Bucknuts staff still confident that Ray Small will be a Buckeye? Second, are there any rumors of players who gave their verbal backing out?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:47:13 PM)
Yes, I think Small signs with OSU and they work out something later if he doesn't qualify. Have not heard any rumors of players backing out of their verbals.

Hicks74 (Jan 20, 2006 1:47:25 PM)
Do you think Coach Tressel may be opening up more to the Junior College ? I know we only get a couple of years but if grades are there they can fill in quicker. Schlegel worked out well though he was a transfer. Lots of good JC O-Lineman left.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:48:01 PM)
No other JUCOs this year. But if it fits what they need (and losing all of your starting LBs would qualify for a need for a quick fix) they will go for it.

calibuck (Jan 20, 2006 1:48:15 PM)
Steve...we haven't heard anything about Mcdaniels from VA. He kind of slipped in for a visit and then out with not much reporting?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:48:38 PM)
He took our call last week and denied the visit. Hasn't taken a call since and sources said he wasn't serious about coming to OSU.

KJ45 (Jan 20, 2006 1:48:47 PM)
Rose looked great at times in the Army game. I believe he only played one year in high school, is he capable of making an impact right away, or is he too raw? Maybe there too much depth on the DL next year for him to play much?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:49:33 PM)
Well, they'll add him to the group in August and see how he fits in. I think as a situational player he can help them. I would not look for him to start. Maybe as a pass rush specialist.

TexasBuckeye (Jan 20, 2006 1:49:44 PM)
I see, in 06, a potential reversal of roles on the O and D. Whereas this year the D was ready early but the O took some time to gel, the opposite may be true in 06 because we are losing so many starters on D. I certainly hope the O comes out ready to play early. They may have to be the ones to keep us in games early in the season while the D gets a chance to play together as a unit under fire for a whie. Your thoughts?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:51:00 PM)
I agree completely. In 2004 the defense had some early growing pains and gave up scads of yards to NW, UW and Iowa -- all losses. The schedule for 06 is front-loaded with Texas, PSU and Iowa all in the first 5 games. They need to grow up quickly. Those UT wideouts -- even with a new QB throwing to them -- will provide a tough test in what has to be another night game down in Austin.

PigMan (Jan 20, 2006 1:51:04 PM)
Is Larry Grant going to be a Buckeye or not?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:51:35 PM)
My feeling is yes. They roll out the red carpet, make him feel at home and he verbals. It may not happen right away if he still takes the Oregon visit.

buckgrad (Jan 20, 2006 1:51:39 PM)
Wells, Homan and Coleman are the only recruits enrolling early correct?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:51:44 PM)
As far as I know.

Minnesota Buckeye II (Jan 20, 2006 1:51:50 PM)
Steve...BBall question...is the game tomorrow something like what we saw in Cbus? Or was that just us shooting the lights out...?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:52:27 PM)
Penn State is getting better. They pounded Purdue, of course that was Purdue. But I look forFoster to come out of his funk and play well tomorrow. Important game, as well as next Sat. game at Iowa.

PigMan (Jan 20, 2006 1:52:36 PM)
How is Mike D'Andrea's health?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:53:19 PM)
He didn't dress at the end of the RS, then they said he could have played vs. ND. I assume he is fine. But it needs to be monitored week to week.

PigMan (Jan 20, 2006 1:53:38 PM)
Coach Conley said something interesting in his last article when he mentioned something about recruiting against "known cheaters"? I don't suppose you could elaborate on who he was talking about?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:54:56 PM)
He has always maintained there were places where schools got help from boosters in procuring athletes. I know he is mad about 2 schools in particular. I'm not sharing them because I don't have proof myself. But he has been adamant about it. He even said one of them had a "money guy."

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:55:21 PM)
He recruited Florida for over a decade so he saw it all, believe me.

ginnagain (Jan 20, 2006 1:55:31 PM)
With C. Well on his way, how much playtime does he get?? With Pitt's 1300+, he has put himself up there. I feel will be one of the top 5 backs in the nation next season.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:56:21 PM)
Wells, if he is up to the challenge, would be the change-up back as the season starts. Then Wells will get some carries as the game progresses. Maybe a 22-13 split in Pitt's favor, something like that.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:56:33 PM)
But whoever gets the job done the best will become the man by midseason.

Head (Jan 20, 2006 1:56:44 PM)
Hey Steve. Number 30 in your programs and #1 in your hearts here. Looks like are FB recruiting class in shaping up nicely. Looks like we may have missed out on a couple of the big boys up front. What does 07 look like in the state for OL?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:58:36 PM)
Head, not so good. Duane Long is not all that excited about the OL prospects in Ohio. There are 2-3 names that have surfaced. A kid named Mark Wetterer from Anderson, Cameron Wade from Bedford Chanel, Nick Shepsis from Walsh Jesuit, Dan Berry from Mentor Lake Catholic. Those may be the best ones. They'll probably have to go out of state ...

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:59:21 PM)
They'll have 11 on scholarship in 06 and lose Datish and Downing. I think they need to take 3 if possible next year to get up to 12.

leek (Jan 20, 2006 1:59:25 PM)
Any surprises left for the Buckeyes?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 1:59:44 PM)
I don't have any. I'm focused on these same 10 kids we've been talking about.

daytondawg (Jan 20, 2006 2:00:49 PM)
Can C. Wells run out of the spread? Seemed like he had some problems adjusting during U.S. Army all-star practices.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:01:26 PM)
He's never done it. Ginn tried to work with him on it down there. He'll get his fill of it this spring. Pittman showed how it can be so effective. Walker from ND is great at it.

buckeyeinsaline (Jan 20, 2006 2:01:34 PM)
Steve, Think OSU is ranked No. 1 out of the gate this fall? I would rather see us top 5 then catapult up after winning the Texas Game and Blowing out Michigan again.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:03:10 PM)
I think the pundits will hold OSU up in the air and really see the lack of proven talent on D and downrate them from No. 1 to somewhere in the top 5 or top 10 by the time the preseason polls come out. ...

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:04:12 PM)
Somebody on the basketball board wondered if OSU would be No. 1 in basketball next year because of Oden (did he put on a show last night, or what?). That could be amazing that both programs could be top two or three in the next school year. But that is a lot to live up to for having such youth in key spots.

bucky (Jan 20, 2006 2:04:19 PM)
Steve....alot of conflicting info regarding Mathews. What chance do we actually have with him in your opinin? 0%, 10%,50%??

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:04:40 PM)
Michigan 58 percent, OSU 32 percent, FSU (I think he's visiting there now) 10 percent.

Hicks74 (Jan 20, 2006 2:04:50 PM)
Lenix-Hiley-Small (they better have a deep pipeline at Glenville !) Hoping on the DT that just transferred in there from Warrensville, Rowell....6'3 335 NT ! Who is other top prospect for next year from Glenville ? Hines ?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:05:11 PM)
Yes, Jermale Hines as an LB/safety probably like Lenix. We'll see if he's as good/

spout (Jan 20, 2006 2:05:36 PM)
IMHO,truly believe DEF. will be fine. Quite a few guys with something to prove next year (D'Andrea,Kerr,Welch, etc).Need to find a true leader.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:06:18 PM)
That's important. People played hard and well because of leaders like Hawk, Carpenter, Kudla, Salley, Whitner, etc. Who will take on that leadership role. Maybe a Marcus Freeman.

buckgrad (Jan 20, 2006 2:06:31 PM)
Who is the one recruit that isnt a C.Wells or Rose type of player that could come in and pull a Lauriniatis or Jenkins this year. A 2-3 star guy that contributes significantly next year? Thanks

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:07:04 PM)
Kurt Coleman because the secondary is wide open. Maybe Ross Homan by going through spring ball.

leek (Jan 20, 2006 2:07:24 PM)
Steve, I think Wells is a huge deal, but considering the number of good backs at OSU, do you think he gets many carries as a freshman?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:07:46 PM)
Yes, I do. He is enrolling early and if he produces like he's capable in the spring, he will play in the fall.

Head (Jan 20, 2006 2:07:56 PM)
I know FB is everything for Buckeye fans, but you know I'm a BBall man by trade. It looks like the Bucks BBall squad is working there way to a 4 seed in the big dance if they continue to play the way they have been. What do think? #30 in your programs!

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:10:28 PM)
Yep, that was my projection last night. 13-2 and 3-2 in Big Ten now. 8-3 in the Big Ten the rest of the way and 1-0 nonconf (Fla. A&M). That totals up to 22-5 overall going into the BTT. Maybe 2-1 or 3-0 there. Yes, four seed or higher. But they have to stay on it. They have such little depth that when Dials gets in foul trouble, it just kills them.

PigMan (Jan 20, 2006 2:10:42 PM)
When does spring practice start this year?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:11:13 PM)
The spring game is April 22. I imagine they will start March 29 or 30.

DaytonBuckeye (Jan 20, 2006 2:11:47 PM)
Steve, who would you rather have committing to OSU, Grant or McCarthy. I know you are going to say both, but if you could only have your pick which one would it be? I am sure both are fine players but would you take the possible immediate impact with Grant or the long term situation with McCarthy?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:12:38 PM)
This is not my call. This is something Fickell and Heacock and Tressel will have to reconcile. I guess Grant because he can help them the next 2 years. McCarthy's worth would probably be more in 2008-10.

diehardbucfan2004 (Jan 20, 2006 2:12:48 PM)
Steve, what is your take on Aram Olson! He looks like a pure battering ram to me. His video is just downright sick. Why was he not rated higher to start with. Even now he is still only rated a 3 star. Of course, I could care lesss about stars.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:14:29 PM)
Fullback is just not a major impact position with most recruiting gurus. Most view them as a dime a dozen. But I agree that there is something special about Aram Olson. He means a lot for OSU's plans to run Wells out of the I.

westonbuckeye (Jan 20, 2006 2:15:50 PM)
Whats the latest on Cumberland? Some posters are claiming he got a 20 on the act?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:16:25 PM)
I have thought he was Minnesota's to lose all along. That's the pipeline now City League to Minnesota. Maybe OSU comes in late, but I think his transcript not the test could be the issue.

DDC (Jan 20, 2006 2:16:36 PM)
There has been a lot of talk about the Schott's atmosphere. Do you think it will get better anytime in the next few years? Maybe putting more students near the court.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:17:27 PM)
Gene Smith and Thad Matta will try and wrap their arms around it at some point. It was great on Sunday and next to dead on Wed. I'm not sure there is anything they can do. I used to know where everybody sat. ...

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:18:08 PM)
My thing is using the 5 rows behind the benches -- that you see on camera -- for students. Whoever is sitting there now needs to be moved. I think it's faculty and staff primarily there.

KJ45 (Jan 20, 2006 2:18:19 PM)
Has Bowman been given an offer to be a Buckeye? If so, do you think we pull him away from the Hawkeyes?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:19:09 PM)
He has been offered. I think he is conflicted by it. Gant coming to OSU helps their cause.

whio (Jan 20, 2006 2:19:16 PM)
Any possibility of having room for Aston Henderson in this class? He looks like a great *** sleeper. Also any chance for Cumberland or Troutman. Just logged on , sorry if already asked>

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:20:18 PM)
Troutman maybe. Henderson would need to visit. Cumberland real long shot.

PigMan (Jan 20, 2006 2:20:44 PM)
I understand if you can't name the schools, but could you at least give us the conference of the two schools Conley is "mad at"?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:20:56 PM)
One in the SEC (go figure) and one in the Big Ten.

Hicks74 (Jan 20, 2006 2:21:08 PM)
Do you think Cordle gets decent playing time this year even with Datish likely moving there. I would hate to have a real green guy there. Do a Mangold for Stepanovich move and let Datish rotate with the guards at times ?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:21:57 PM)
They will rotate players between spots. My guess is they go Barton and Boone at tackle, Datish and Downing at guard and Cordle at center. Could also be Barton and Boone at tackle, Rehring and Downing at guard and Datish at center.

Guest (Jan 20, 2006 2:22:08 PM)
Steve. You mentioned a night game with Texas again. Has that time been set yet? I am hearing here in Texas a day game so the midday heat and humidity, at that time of year, can factor against tOSU. Have you heard any definite news regarding the time for the game?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:22:36 PM)
TexasBuckeye asks about the OSU-Texas game and whether it's been set and how they want the heat and humidity to work against OSU ...

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:25:24 PM)
First of all, that's not Texas' call. I suppose they could veto the night game if they want to for whatever reason. They played Louisiana-Lafayette in a 7 p.m. game last year the week before OSU. But the 2005 game was a winner in the ratings for ABC. The buildup would be just the same in 2006, two top-10 teams at the worst. As I said, that would be ABC's call as the rightsholder as to start time.

murfinatl (Jan 20, 2006 2:25:46 PM)
just got in. sorry if someone asked this already. If Grant commits and enrolls in Spring does he count in the "06 schollies or "05?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:26:24 PM)
Doesn't matter what year they put him on. The main issue is the 85 scholarship limit. They won't approach 25 in either year. I imagine they can back date him if they want.

whio (Jan 20, 2006 2:26:37 PM)
Granting schollies to deserving walk-ons is great and undoubtedly good for the program, but is there a set number held back each year? It doesn't seem like that would be a good policy, since it may cause you to turn away guys you want and need. Also, there may not be walk-ons worthy of a Div. 1 scholarship in a given year, let alone to OSU.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:27:15 PM)
No, not a "set total". It usually works out that they have 1-3 to award in the fall. I think Drew Norman the long snapper and maybe Antonio Smith would deserve them.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:27:27 PM)
Maybe Pettrey or Pretorius as well if one of them starts.

CABuck (Jan 20, 2006 2:27:41 PM)
I love an unhearalded guy like Jenkins coming in a getting a lot of playing time as a frosh. He seems tough as nails, although maybe a little too much jawing; hard to talk trash about catching up to Maroney when he just busted a 70 yards run on your team, but anyway. It worries me that he got called for pass interference a BUNCH last year. Is this a common rookie type thing or is his style a little too physical? Do you think Jenkins is a lock at one CB spot or can a combo like Amos and Underwood end up taking the bulk?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:28:24 PM)
Jenkins is a lock. I didn't see him get flagged that often. Hey, he was a true freshman. He was a godsend when Everett went down. Brandon Underwood, if he's healthy, may be my No. 1 pick.

CTBUCK (Jan 20, 2006 2:28:46 PM)
I can't see us not in the top 5, when the polls come out. Who becomes the defensive leader..who do you see as captains for next year?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:29:30 PM)
Agreed, probably top 5 on basis of Smith, Pittman and Ginn. Defensive leaders will be Pitcock, Patterson, Freeman, D'Andrea (if healthy), Jenkins, Mitchell. ...

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:29:58 PM)
Captains: Smith, Downing or Datish, Pitcock and either Patterson or Mitchell.

CABuck (Jan 20, 2006 2:30:25 PM)
Is Lenix officially at Cincinnati now and if so will he be immediately eligible to play?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:30:35 PM)
Yes, as far as I know.

Hicks74 (Jan 20, 2006 2:30:40 PM)
Arum Olson - Nice unexpected late pickup eh ? A power backfield of Olson and Wells running behind Boone/Barton/Connor Smith/Browning/Rehring in two years ? Scary ! For the DL's that is....

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:33:10 PM)
Yep, that's how I see it. Tressel will put games in the hands of Pittman and Wells. It's a proven formula.

ckorom52 (Jan 20, 2006 2:33:15 PM)
Do you know why all of the insiders are being quiet? Is something big brewing?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:33:40 PM)
It's just quiet now. There are only so many times we can call the same 6 or 8 kids.

abc (Jan 20, 2006 2:33:48 PM)
SPring camp starts march 30th

daytondawg (Jan 20, 2006 2:33:51 PM)
Texas is going to be extremly difficult to beat in Austin. Do you think some buck fans are being delusional in their belief we take that game easily?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:34:12 PM)
You're right, but it got a lot easier when Young left. I'm not sure they'll be able to hold OSU under 35 points.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:34:19 PM)
Maybe I'm on crack.

Hicks74 (Jan 20, 2006 2:34:25 PM)
Does Ben Person break the 2-Deep this year. He looked great in the Big 33. Is he a diappointment or just being groomed.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:35:39 PM)
Well, they will only have 11 scholarship linemen this year. All of the walk-ons that crashed the party (Conroy and Winner) are gone. It's time for Person, Skinner and Mitchum to step up and earn their spot. Bollman has shown he will not award playing time or 2-deep spots by default.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:35:49 PM)
Is there anything else today?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:36:27 PM)
Bill Conley will Chat Monday at 1 p.m. I think we then have Kyle on Tuesday, we're working on Bob Lichtenfels on Wed. and then likely Gary and I in some order late next week.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:36:49 PM)
Then Bill Conley again on the Monday before signing day and Duane Long the day before NSD.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:37:32 PM)
As David Letterman would say, "This has been more fun than mere humans should be allowed."

naper (Jan 20, 2006 2:37:41 PM)
Do you have any guage on when we hear anything on the next commitment?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:38:49 PM)
Kylan Robinson announces Wed., Wes Lyons on Thursday. Grant or Bowman could pull trigger after this weekend. Mathews and Small may announce on NSD. Not sure about Troutman, Peters, Gibson, McCarthy or Fields.

Head (Jan 20, 2006 2:39:36 PM)
Thanks bro. Enjoy your website and Mag. Hell your website is my home page. Take care and talk w/ ya later.

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:40:06 PM)
That is what we like to hear. Our goal is to have something new to talk about every 3-4 hours. Some days it's quicker than that (ha ha).

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:40:14 PM)
Hey guys gotta go. See you later!

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:40:22 PM)
I'll turn off moderation, talk if you like.

spout (Jan 20, 2006 2:40:34 PM)
Just looked thru our roster. One player from Toledo.Few more from NW OH.Why? Talent?

SteveHelwagen (Jan 20, 2006 2:41:16 PM)
I dunno. OSU just hasn't worked that area as hard and there have been few difference makers there. They don't get beaten for big names there, either. Fred Davis, notwithstanding.
