Housteau Chat Archive - Jan. 26

Gary Housteau stopped by chat Thursday evening to field questions on OSU football and recruiting. We have a transcript posted below. Steve Helwagen will Chat at 3 p.m. Friday. Bill Conley will Chat at 1 p.m. Monday and Duane Long on Tuesday (time TBA).

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:09:49 PM)
Good evening everyone...I would like to start by congratulating Wes Lyons on his decision tonight and I wish him well. I think he's going to be a tremendous college receiver, sooner rather than later, and I'm happy for him.

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:10:50 PM)
Anything on your mind with signing day just around the corner, literally. I'm working on a couple of surprises for my recruiting day odyssey this year. My fifth annual tour. I hope you will be watching for it.

rbuck (Jan 26, 2006 9:11:27 PM)
Hi Gary, Will you end the suspense?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:11:27 PM)
Hi rbuck...when I know what suspense you are talking about then I can try and end it. Smile!

Heater (Jan 26, 2006 9:12:50 PM)

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:12:50 PM)
Hi heater...It's a good choice for Wes and I'm happy for him. I've seen it coming all along and knew enough not to make a long trek to Monroeville this evening. I'm not surprised to say the least.

Westonbuckeye (Jan 26, 2006 9:13:56 PM)
I am kind of disapointed at the lack of "inside" information coming out. All discussions seems to center on what "just happened"

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:13:56 PM)
Hi Weston, if you can be more specific I'll be glad to try to answer your question.

NYC Bucks (Jan 26, 2006 9:16:05 PM)
Gary - Would the signing of Elijah Fields be the icing on the cake or what? I think this would definately cement the OSU class as a top 5-6. What do you think?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:16:06 PM)
Hi NYC Bucks...sure it would be a good thing but I just don't see how they would make that happen. But to be honest I don't know enough about where he stands right now to comment.

Palmer (Jan 26, 2006 9:19:20 PM)
whats the deal with chichester? is he looking elsewhere?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:19:20 PM)
Hi Palmer...I really don't know what we can comment on or not at this time so I'll kind of do a two-step here. I guess from the update we all know that he visited Louisville so I guess he is looking elsewhere. We will know more on Wednesday that's for sure. I guess you can say his situation is another reason why getting Lyons would have been a really good thing.

Palmer (Jan 26, 2006 9:22:16 PM)
Gary, what do you think about having small and ginn back returning kicks and punts?! More speed than holmes and ginn!

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:22:16 PM)
In case any of you didn't know by now, I tend to like some of the guys coming out of Glenville and the two you mentioned are two of my favorites. I really like some of the things I've seen Small do the past two years...really tremendous. I've called him the poor man's Teddy Ginn but poor is a relative term here. I'd say a middleclass' Teddy Ginn. Like the extra gear both possess. But I also like Whitner and Rose and Browning...etc...and Troy Smith! Smile!

piquabuck (Jan 26, 2006 9:24:42 PM)
hello...late to the chat...but curious...with all this about brandon saine lately, and ryan ault and whoever else he(tressel) talked to...what do you think are the odds of any of them are coming here?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:24:42 PM)
Hi piquabuck...I'm just beginning to learn about Brandon Saine the football player but I really liked Brandon Saine the track performer. He was terrific at the state meet last spring/summer. I like this kid a lot very impressive if you ask me. If he's half the football player then I'm really going to be into him. I don't enough to comment on him or Ault or the others right now...sorry.

TheKaiser21 (Jan 26, 2006 9:25:24 PM)
Someone mentioned Browning might get a look at DL. Any chance of that?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:25:24 PM)
Hi Kaiser...no trust me on this one. Forget about that ever happening. He wouldn't know where to line up. He's an offensive guy in a big way.

smittybuck (Jan 26, 2006 9:26:57 PM)
hey gary, is j. o'neil ready to step up and start next year?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:26:58 PM)
Hi smittybuck...it's Glenville night early on... I think J.O. can be a tremendous football player at this level and the next. He has so much natural ability and he doesn't even know how good he can be. He needs to learn the game like Whitner and he can be as good as anyone to ever play safety at The Ohio State University. His upside is huge. I love the kid.

fufred (Jan 26, 2006 9:29:14 PM)
Gary who at Glenville in '07 are candidates for an OSU offer besides Jermale Hines? Also is Hines going to end up a buckeye?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:29:15 PM)
Hi fufred...Hines is really the only legitimate guy right now. Their junior class is potentially loaded I might say. Kyle Jefferson is another potential guy this year but he would have to earn it no question. His measureables are pretty good but he needs to put some additional weight on. He looked pretty good down in San Antonio I will say. Hines is a Buckeye...99.9% if offered. I love this kid's ability in so many ways.

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:30:09 PM)
I want to thank everyone for the rapid fire questions to this point. I'm doing my best to get to them but keep them coming.

Heater (Jan 26, 2006 9:30:52 PM)
FWIW--Kudos on the NIGHT TIME chat!!!!! Thank you!

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:30:52 PM)
Thank you and others for tuning in Heater.

StrikeBuck (Jan 26, 2006 9:33:00 PM)
Hi Gary, what do you think the chances of Derrell Johnson making it in this class? I'm really pulling for him.

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:33:00 PM)
I'm pulling for an offer for DJ too in a big way. I'll just let this one take care of itself. I know too much about the situation right now to comment in either way. Would I love to see D.J. become a Buckeye? You betcha. I think we will all know his fate a little better come Wednesday...or have a much better idea. But if he came on board that would be great. Love the kid on and off the football field. His is a great success story whether he ends up at OSU or not.

Heater (Jan 26, 2006 9:37:22 PM)
Alright Gary...here's a real question for you: What's the latest on the "Ginn Academy"? When will a more definitive plan come out and when will that plan come to fruition?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:37:22 PM)
Hi Heater...I think Ginn's illness set the plan back maybe an entire year if not more. I know fund raising is a big issue now and he has a few potential big donors coming down the pike in the few seasons. I believe he's established a foundation for the purpose of raising money to make it happen. It will only end up being an extension of the Glenville Academic Campus but I do not know enough details to get more specific than that. I'm sure a facilities upgrade will be one important aspect of the new academy for starters.

Poz79 (Jan 26, 2006 9:40:04 PM)
Gary, does Torrence get an early offer or do the Buckeyes hold off for awhile?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:40:04 PM)
Sure I would consider it Poz79. Nate Oliver was my main guy and he got his early offer so I'm happy about that. The way the Bill and Duane have talked about Torrence for a couple years now has me excited to see him play this year. I met him only once in person and hope to see him play at least once this coming year. I'd consider him, Clifford, Gamble and Daily as all early offers. Why not. All studs. And of course my favorite Martin. I do expect Hines to get a signing day offer as well. Those are all must gets whether OSU gets them all or not.

JohnnyBuckeye (Jan 26, 2006 9:41:57 PM)
Do you think Devon Torrence is going to play baseball or be a Buckeye? If it were me, it would be awful hard to turn down the money.

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:41:58 PM)
Hi Johnny Buckeye, I would hope that he' a football Buckeye. You can really get lost in the minor leagues unless you're the cream of the cream but he'd have a really high profile in the defensive backfield at OSU if he's as good as our guys are saying he is or could be.

rbuck (Jan 26, 2006 9:43:23 PM)
Gary, Do you have any info on the LB Grant??

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:43:23 PM)
Nothing new on Grant rbuck. I only know what you know about Grant. I assume we will know more on signing day. I believe OSU has a good shot with him.

buckwild23 (Jan 26, 2006 9:47:06 PM)
Hi Gary - Any surprises on Signing Day?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:47:06 PM)
Hi buckwild23...I don't see any Lawrence Wilson's out there but I don't see any Richard Washington's either. I say check with Grant and wrap it up. My work was officially finished last week when Gibson and Small committed. I hope that I've proved that my sources are pretty rock solid for the most part. I want those of you who trust in me to be satisfied with the information that I bring to you. I know everyone can't read everything I write but I thank those of you who try and those of you who know what I'm all about. Smile! I sometimes know more than I should.

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:49:54 PM)
And other than for Aaron Brown, son of George Brown, I did my homework pretty well instate this year. As far as Navarro Bowman, out of state, I'll still stick with my source and what I was told with him and also Mark Johnson. And I was dead on with Lyons situation. I believe most of my information was on the money this recruiting season. And again thank you goes out to all of you who look for my stuff to read. Thank you!

buckwild23 (Jan 26, 2006 9:51:55 PM)
Gary - Which young Buckeye will step up at the WR position?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:51:55 PM)
You know I really want to put a lot of faith in Brian Hartline because I know he's such a tremendous competitor but he's had to overcome two broken bones now in two years and I hope that won't slow him down or discourage him. I think Dukes could be a likely candidate if Roy Hall isn't ready to be the man. I'll go with Dukes and even Robiskie if he gains more strength.

buckwild23 (Jan 26, 2006 9:54:26 PM)
Gary - Will Offensive Line and Wide Receiver be the main focus next season? Build around Chris "Beast" Wells.

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:54:26 PM)
Beanie is really going to be the man. I truly believe that. I remember going to see him on signing day last year and he was all but committed at that time. He waited until that following weekend and then he committed... a day before Ross Homan. These two kids are tremendous cornerstones of the 2006 class and I couldn't be happier about both of them. Offensive line in Ohio will be a disappointment but they need another four member class on the line next year. Receiver needs a new infusion as well. No panic situation however at either position.

kleintime16 (Jan 26, 2006 9:56:19 PM)
What are the chances with our current lack at the WR position that we land deonte thompson next year?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:56:19 PM)
I would think the chances are really good kleintime if you're talking about the kid from Belle Glades. I think he sees what happened to SH and I think AD is in a solid position next year. I would go after him early and hard if they haven't already.

TJ buck (Jan 26, 2006 9:58:25 PM)
Do we have any chance at Peters? Seems like he is gonna be a hard one to pry away from the south

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 9:58:25 PM)
Someone said, maybe Lichtenfels, that Micah Johnson won't let him escape Kentucky...he would be a nice piece on the DL especially if he would develop like Green did over the years. What a player he became at OSU after coming in as an overweight defensive tackle. I like Marcus a lot. I'd love to see Peters do precisely what Marcus did if he decided to come to OSU.

TheKaiser21 (Jan 26, 2006 10:00:18 PM)
What do you make of Lyons to WV. Seemed like the staff put the full court press on late, but didn't seem enough. Any chance we get another wide receiver in this class?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:00:18 PM)
I pretty much documented the Lyons recruitment all along the way and he just fell in love with West Virginia because of the way they recruited him. That's all. Lyons would have been a nice late addition to OSU but maybe they'll still pull another out of the hat...I do not know enough to say.

buckwild23 (Jan 26, 2006 10:04:43 PM)
Gary - How good is it for Ohio State now that Notre Dame and Penn State are back in the National spot light - To me this can only make Ohio State recruit better.

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:04:43 PM)
I think it's tremendous...there's no chance to fall asleep at the wheel...not that there was before. The bottom line is OSU has to really push aggresively to identify early and go after the state's best players. Make them feel wanted. So they don't have the chance to look elsewhere i.e. Nate Oliver. He loved the Bucks before the offer and loves them a whole lot more after it. I also like Kyle Hubbard a whole lot and would consider him for an early offer. Big time talent. Ben Martin has to have an offer on signing day. I see an easy 10 or 11 on signing day alone for the first phase. Wait a month and then hit another major group...in Ohio. Prevent the separation like with the offensive linemen situation in Ohio this year...Joe Thomas was left out and it may have cost Ohio State because of that.

buckwild23 (Jan 26, 2006 10:09:38 PM)
Gary - Early Pre Season Top 5...

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:09:38 PM)
That's tough Buckwild but I can only go by what I've seen thus far.... Martin, Hine and Oliver are set with me. I really liked watching Gamble last year and I like Clifford. I'd say those are my top five. If Mabin had a little more size he could move up to four but he might be outside of my top five right now. But I like Mabin a lot. I'm not sure either quarterback, Belton or Smith, is up there that high right now.

JohnnyBuckeye (Jan 26, 2006 10:10:33 PM)
What kids, if any, do you think might not qualify due to academics?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:10:33 PM)
There are a few that are concerns that I know of but I do not want to tread in those waters. Obviously Gibson and Small are two concerns and I'll leave it at that.

kleintime16 (Jan 26, 2006 10:12:05 PM)
There have been bucknutters who say O-line will be the big priority next year, others say it is D-line, specifically DT, while other say its WR, which one really is the biggest need???

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:12:05 PM)
It's the O-line kleintime. With Chris Wells around for the next three or four years, there has to be a steady stream of O-lineman ready to be inserted when one departs. It has to be that way. Protect the franchise!

kleintime16 (Jan 26, 2006 10:13:11 PM)
Hey Gary, what do you think are the realistic chances we land Ogelsby next year?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:13:11 PM)
Not good! I would say he's ND's to lose although I absolutley loved the kid at camp last year. Loved him!

fufred (Jan 26, 2006 10:16:17 PM)
Ok Gary time to go on record, how do you think OSU finishes recruiting this year? Grant? Peters? DJ? McDaniel? Anyone else?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:16:17 PM)
Sounds good fufred. I want to believe McDaniel is a possibility but I have no inside information so I don't want contaminate the thinking out there. I think Grant is a good shot. Peters I would doubt but would take him. I'm not real sure on DJ but I would love to have him. Beyond that, who knows? The major work is finished. I think the receiver position is still a bit of a concern at this time so maybe there will be a strong push to finish out the class at that position.

Guest (Jan 26, 2006 10:19:34 PM)
Are we gonna be short handed at WR this recruiting class?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:19:34 PM)
Krunkjuice asked about the WR position and I will just say again that it's still a concern for this class. I stated a week or so ago that Lyons might look a whole lot better than many of you think he is on signing day. It's still a mystery to me how so many of you were willing to push Lyons aside so easily. I see great things at the college level for this young man. I won't go to bat for him like I did with Tyrell Sutton because I never saw Lyons play live, but I love everything else about him. He's no tweener. He's a 6-7 (barefoot) wide receiver.

Guest (Jan 26, 2006 10:21:30 PM)
Will Small play defense, offense or both?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:21:30 PM)
Hi Center67...to this day I still think DB is TGII's best position so it really doesn't matter what I think about Small I guess. I would have to say I think Small can be a player on either side of the ball but I think he is naturally special, like Ginn, on offense and special teams. I'd play him on offense. He's a difference-maker.

Guest (Jan 26, 2006 10:23:00 PM)
Thanks for the time Gary----Does D johnson make this class?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:23:00 PM)
Hi Indybuck...My heart says yes...he's my sentimental hometown pick but my head isn't sure yet where he stands. I just have a feeling that someone will want him on signing day!

kleintime16 (Jan 26, 2006 10:24:57 PM)
Since Tressel has taken office OSU has had several very early verbal commitments. Do you see this taking place this year and if so who do you think we land right off the bat?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:24:57 PM)
Kleintime...I would hope that someone like Evege and Oliver step to the plate to get the ball rolling. I think those are the best two chanes of impact type players. I'm certain it won't be Hines but he's another one that should wrap it up early. Martin has no chance of going early either place, OSU or ND...I think he has too much respect for both places.

Guest (Jan 26, 2006 10:25:25 PM)
Gary, what is the word on Chichester? I've heard reports that he wasn't going to make it past OSU admissions and that is why he is visiting Louisville.

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:25:25 PM)
Hi mhsbuck...let's just say that I've heard some of the same reports that you have.

bb1 (Jan 26, 2006 10:27:44 PM)
Does Bucknuts have an office?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:27:44 PM)
Bucknuts World HQ is in Dayton where Mr. Bucknuts presides. Steve and Dave man the Columbus office and I have the unofficial office in northeast Ohio. The main man Kirk Larrabbbbbbeeeeee, I forget how to spell it because I always type KL to get his name to populate on my emails, who puts everything together on the website and the magazines, under Steve's direction of course, is in Dayton.

Guest (Jan 26, 2006 10:28:24 PM)
Gary, Thanks for the hard work, you've done a excellent job!

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:28:24 PM)
I appreciate the kind words rbuck. I really love what I do and I hope that it shows in my work.

Guest (Jan 26, 2006 10:29:17 PM)
Roy Hall....I 've been screaming his name for the past year.

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:29:18 PM)
Hi onesourceohio...He is the best...now they just have to find the right way to unleash the beast. He could be the most improved offensive player next year.

buckwild23 (Jan 26, 2006 10:30:58 PM)
Gary - Speaking of Ross Homan - Do you see Ohio State building around Chris Wells on Offense and Ross Homan on Defense for the next couple of years...Great football players.

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:30:58 PM)
Great football players and great, humble young men also. I can't wait to see the cover of Ohio High when it hits the street. I'm so proud that I had the chance to take that picture of those two guys. Two really great young man who will be staples of their respective sides of the ball in the next three or four or five years at OSU.

buckwild23 (Jan 26, 2006 10:32:18 PM)
Gary - Ohio State did a great job at each position..what do you think? QB- Henton, RB- Wells, WR -Small, OL- Connor - DL - Rose LB- Homan and DB- Coleman

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:32:19 PM)
And many others to go with that crew for sure. I think all those guys you mentioned are almost guaranteed to make an impact at OSU.

Guest (Jan 26, 2006 10:35:57 PM)
Do you think OSU offers/gets Jordan Mabin next year? What position will he play?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:35:57 PM)
Indybuck...although I like Mabin a lot I don't know if he'll make it in next year. I think he's probably the best pure running back in Ohio as far as ability but I think Morgan Williams or even Hosea Simpson may be the two best prospects at the position in Ohio. I also like the potential of Johnson, the transfer from CJ who went to Centerville I believe, at running back. And I think Danny Herron is a battler. But Mabin can contribute to all three facets of the game in a big way. He's a home run hitter on all three phases of the game and JT likes those kinds of guys. I like Mabin a lot. I think he will be in the Big Ten or Pitt next year. Three 1,000 yard seasons already under his belt. Hi character kid too.

TheKaiser21 (Jan 26, 2006 10:39:26 PM)
I've asked this 3 times but not to you I don't think. Will the staff use Ginn on D next year. In a gamble type situation, where he also plays Offense. We lost alot back there, and he could only help.

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:39:26 PM)
I certainly hope so Kaiser. Ginn will only be around one more year so I hope the staff squeezes every ounce from him as possible. I truly believe that he will be stellar on the defensive side of the ball as well if he plays there. He still believes he's a lockdown cornerback but because he's such a team player, thanks to his father, he's settling for the offensive headlines only. He could be the best at all three positions if given the chance. And he can't be overused. He doesn't know the meaning of the word.

buckwild23 (Jan 26, 2006 10:39:52 PM)
Gary - Time to play fortune teller - How many early commitments will OSU receive after signing day? Last year Wells and Homan lead the way....

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:39:52 PM)
I would hope they get 2 again. Oliver and Evege!

JohnnyBuckeye (Jan 26, 2006 10:44:16 PM)
Gary, Do you think Freddie Lenix is bitter over what happened with his situation? Do you see this having a negative effect, or do you see it more as a positive thing that coaches can use to tell kids they need to hit the books harder?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:44:16 PM)
Only a positive thing. The kids at Glenville are starting to see it at an earlier age or grade. They see the people coming into their school all the time, recruiters from all schools big and small, and it is having an impact. People wonder why Glenville kids don't commit early...it's not encouraged but it's not discouraged. Any single recruiter that comes into that school is viewed as a victory by the staff at Glenville. Guys like Lenix and even Small will be fewer and farther in between in the years to come. I can only tell you that they all love O-State at Glenville...trust me on that one people. I've been right from the beginning about every single Glenville kid to date.

Guest (Jan 26, 2006 10:45:36 PM)
what should we expect from the kicking game next year?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:45:36 PM)
Deek, I would say you can expect a little instability at the beginning of the season because of inexperience but the legs are surely there. It will eventually round into shape.

osufan26 (Jan 26, 2006 10:46:54 PM)
Do you think they offer Morgan Williams or Devon Torrence early?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:46:55 PM)
I don't think so on Williams but maybe on Torrence. I'm sure Bill would have a better idea on that than myself. I think Torrence makes sense but I don't know if he'll get one.

buckwild23 (Jan 26, 2006 10:48:19 PM)
Gary - it looks like Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan did a good job with filling needs this recruiting season. What's your take?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:48:19 PM)
I can only speak for the Bucks for the most part buckwild23 and I say they addressed each position with quality if not quite as much in quantity. A solid class that could have been much better. Top Ten class yes.

bb1 (Jan 26, 2006 10:51:12 PM)
How can Illinois get a verbal from Cumberland, I thought they were good academic school

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:51:12 PM)
If the reports are true out of Brookhaven Cumberland really helped himself on the ACT...I know he had a lot of work but I'm told Minnesota was all set to pounce on him when his score came out last week. They were camped at the school waiting on his test score. I don't know his status but I'm sure at least Minnesota will find a way to get him in.

piquabuck (Jan 26, 2006 10:51:46 PM)
any word on why Hawk turned down the senior bowl invite?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:51:46 PM)
Sorry piquabuck...I have no insight on that. I think he's proven all he's needed to prove at this point.

Guest (Jan 26, 2006 10:54:56 PM)
Who do you think has a beakout season next year? I feel like wilson or Gholston would be great because of need

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:54:56 PM)
Indy I would like to see Jay Richardson break out by now but I'll settle for either Wilson or even Gholston at this point. Wilson has the chance to become the man this year but he has to do it on the field. I'm waiting on it to happen. I also think David Patterson will remain on the outside if at all possible to give him more room to operate. I would like to see Barrow step up. I really thought he showed some nice things at the two summer all-star games a couple of seasons ago. Big Sian Cotton needs to pick it up a notch too. Tim Schafer was a pretty good HS player also. The bodies are there all along the D-line. Joel Penton..etc.

Guest (Jan 26, 2006 10:55:11 PM)
Is fields in this class?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:55:11 PM)
I would say no INDY if I had to guess.

TheKaiser21 (Jan 26, 2006 10:56:13 PM)
Did you read the article on Logan-El's presser. Seems like a trend with PSU committmets. Classless. Bowman comes to mind that we were in on. Coaches waiting across the street in a Best Buy? What's the strangest presser you've ever been to.

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:56:13 PM)
I've been really fortunate to only be at the ones that I needed to be at!

Gary - As always Great Stuff tonight - Earlier you said it will be a down year for Offensive Lineman in Ohio, what about WR? Possible targets?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 10:59:25 PM)
I'm anxious to see duane's list Buckwild because the best wide receiver I've seen to date is Kyle Hubbard and he's projected to be a tight end. Jurevicious of Iggy is a little undersized but he can catch the ball and make plays. Ifft from Dover has a ton of yardage returning and his QB Garner is back also so they may be the most prolific pair tow watch for. Not a lot of possible targets at WR come to mind at this time. I hope Belton and Smith have someone to throw to.

Gary - The sleeper of the 2006 class is.....

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 11:04:02 PM)
Other than Wells having a major impact I think this class will all headed for either special teams or a redshirt. I think Homan obviously will be in the mix but I'm not so sure if he'll have an Hawk type of season or not. I expect him to do well so he wouldn't be a sleeper. I don't see many freshmen next year having a major impact other than on special teams. Maybe Small but I think he'll need a year until Teddy is gone. Coleman maybe as well. I like Connor Smith in one year's time from now. A year will do him wonders at OSU.

Gary - Who are the top recruiters on the Ohio State staff? Luke Fickell and Tim Beckman seem to be on the defensive side, who on the offensive side?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 11:05:26 PM)
I really like Fickell a whole lot if I had to pick just one. Bollman is a pretty solid recruiter as well from hearing what the kids have to say about him. I don't know Beckman well enough but Fickell and Bollman are the two I hear about the most from the kids and coaches.

osufan26 (Jan 26, 2006 11:06:10 PM)
What's the latest on Derrell Johnson and Ray Small? Will they make it?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 11:06:10 PM)
Both still working hard to improve their lot academically and will continue to do that up until graduation I'm sure.

osufan26 (Jan 26, 2006 11:07:39 PM)
What D-lineman are out there for 07? I heard a report that Solomon Thomas from West Chester could be the equal of Ben Martin..

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 11:07:39 PM)
I like Joey D'Andrea as well. Caleb Lipsey from Sycamore is a big run stopper.

buckwild23 (Jan 26, 2006 11:09:24 PM)
Gary - Bollman? Who was recruited by Bollman this season?

GaryHousteau (Jan 26, 2006 11:09:24 PM)
Smith and Browning both spoke highly of Bollman at one point. Just offensive linemen in general over the past few years have said so ...I remember Barton and others speaking highly of Bollman.

We've hit the two hour mark tonight and I'm going to wrap it up now. It was a spirited and fast moving chat tonight and I want to thank everyone who participated and I also want to thank those of you who took the time to read through the entire chat at a later time. It's really a privilege for me to have an opportunity to do a chat like this and I'm really grateful to have the opportunity to try to entertain and inform you all at the same time. I have a couple of surprises lined up on my fifth-annual Recruiting Odyssey on Wednesday if I can pull them off. Remember that when I'm out there pounding the pavement I'm doing it all for you guys. We hope to make this, by far, the best web site for anyone to turn to and we thank those of you who are so loyal to the site. Good night and God bless. And go Bucks!
