Here is the archive of Tuesday's Chat session with Bucknuts.com recruiting editor Duane Long.

Kirk (Jan 31, 2006 2:07:40 PM)
Here he comes

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:08:13 PM)
Hey, you wackos!!!!!!!

Kirk (Jan 31, 2006 2:08:38 PM)
Hello Duane; thanks for stopping by today. Let's get some recruiting chatter started. The moderation is now on; we'll go for around an hour, so everyone fire away.

Royal Flush47 (Jan 31, 2006 2:08:42 PM)
Will there by any surprises, good/bad, for OSU tomorrow?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:09:53 PM)
I do not think we see a signing day surprise but Peters and McDaniels are definitely in ply. DEFINITELY.

Kirk (Jan 31, 2006 2:10:24 PM)
wwt asks "Do you expect to see any early commitments for next year within the next week?"

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:11:17 PM)
I have not heard anything but I intend to start checking. I am going to make contact with the Ohio offered players in the next couple of days and see where things stand.

Mike68 (Jan 31, 2006 2:11:22 PM)
Duane- What in-state RB's do you feel are worthy of an OSU scholarship offer in 2007? Also do you see any of the backs getting offered early (i.e feb/ March/April)

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:12:41 PM)
We already have an offer to Piqua's Brandon Saine. He is the real deal, Buckeye fans. He is not what you think. This is not some small scatback. He is legit 6-1 and 205-210. He is built alot like another Buckeye sprinter, Eric Haw.

PigMan (Jan 31, 2006 2:12:48 PM)
Do you know why Larry Grant went the JUCO route in the first place? Was it grades or was he just not that heavily recruited coming out of high school?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:13:08 PM)
Grades. I am sure of it.

Guest (Jan 31, 2006 2:13:13 PM)
Which kid (OSU or not) was the most impressive for you to follow this year?

Kirk (Jan 31, 2006 2:13:32 PM)
chas15 asks "Which kid (OSU or not) was the most impressive for you to follow this year?"

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:15:28 PM)
Henton and Wells. Henton took his game to another level. Wells performed so well with a team that was not really a good one which is one of the things that makes me rate him over Clarett. Small had an impressive year. Ross Homan should have been Mr. Football. Nobody dominated like he did.

JimC (Jan 31, 2006 2:15:35 PM)
Duane, What are we going to do with all of these LB'ers?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:17:01 PM)
I think Grant and likely Homan play right away. Gibson and Moeller need to redshirt. Neither are big enough to play right away. Johnson likely sits, too. The one place the Buckeyes have talent and bodies is the Mike.

buckmark (Jan 31, 2006 2:17:10 PM)
Duane, Bill Conley says this is a "class without speed". Do you see the same thing?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:19:06 PM)
No, but I think that is not really what he meant. I think he was trying to say that what stands out about this class is the big speed with Ballard, Miller, Rose and Dublin, and the linebackers. I didn't see his comments but if he really said it lacks speed I think he needs to get a better look at Small, Coleman and Schwartz.

Kirk (Jan 31, 2006 2:19:34 PM)
We'll lump a few Greg Mathews questions together here

TroySmithWnaB (Jan 31, 2006 2:19:38 PM)
Mathews in play, or definately not?

PigMan (Jan 31, 2006 2:19:41 PM)
I have a question about WR Greg Mathews. Scout lists him as running a 4.9 forty. That is really pathetic speed for a WR. What is it about him that has OSU, scUM, and FSU after him?

jsbuckeye (Jan 31, 2006 2:19:57 PM)
Do we end up with either McDaniel or Mattews the wr's in this class?

Royal Flush47 (Jan 31, 2006 2:20:07 PM)
Greg Mathews' mother said in the Dispatch today that he will announce tomorrow at 8 am. Will he be re-affirming him committment to tsun?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:20:46 PM)
I think Mathews is going to Michigan. That time is not accurate. McDaniels is still in play. I think he goes to FSU but the Buckeyes are still in this.

labsbeabmm (Jan 31, 2006 2:21:08 PM)
I think Grant is a great sign. He has the potential to step in early if the returning guys fail or are injured. Your thoghts?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:24:26 PM)
I think he plays right away. The one spot that is really lacking is the Sam. Freeman is there to play the Will. Terry can spell him. Dandrea or Hoobler should be able to man the Mike. The one area of concern is the Sam. Freeman could play there but he is a natural Will. I think it very interesting that the one spot that there is a question mark is the Sam and this staff does something it never does, recruit a JUCO kid, and that JUCO kid just happens to be a Sam. He was brought here to play right away so they can redshirt Gibson and play Freeman at the Will.

digger778 (Jan 31, 2006 2:24:37 PM)
Is it just me, or does it irritate you just a little, that some of these kids who you might not consider to be a real blue chipper, have to wait for signing day just to make what they might think is a big splash announcement?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:26:38 PM)
I think it is just you. These are all high end athletes. To be this good they have to believe they are this good. I say all the time, to be the man you have to believe you are the man. They could not care less that someone rated them # 40. They think they are # 1.

ram (Jan 31, 2006 2:26:43 PM)
Ohio State has signed 20 players, who is left?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:27:10 PM)
McDaniels and Peters.

kleintime16 (Jan 31, 2006 2:27:15 PM)
Hey Duane, any particular feeling about the OL prospects out there for next year, and I mean are there any indications that ones OSU has targeted are leaning towards OSU, or another school?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:28:17 PM)
I have not seen enough of any of them yet to make a call on the OLs. So far it is not a really impressive lot.

TroySmithWnaB (Jan 31, 2006 2:28:29 PM)
Any early interest from out-of-state WR's in 2007? Everyone seems to think TG is gone, along with Hall being a senior.

buckmark (Jan 31, 2006 2:28:32 PM)
We hear there isn't much in state for OL's and WR's. Do you see Tress' staff capable of pulling some highly rated out of staters to fill the need?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:28:56 PM)
I am not up on oos juniors this early.

ToledoBucknut (Jan 31, 2006 2:29:17 PM)
With this new outstanding LB class coming in, the speculation is running rampant on how the LB 2 deep is going to look. But to my surprise, Hooble at the MIKE is not getting nearly as much talk as I would have figured. Last I recall, Chad was the next Wilhelm. What is your best guess for the 2 deep at LB next year?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:29:50 PM)
All you have to do is look at this class. Half the commitments are oos players.

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:30:51 PM)
Grant and Laurinatis at the Sam. Dandrea and Hoobler at the Mike. Freeman and Terry at the Will with Homan a good possibility to work into the mix.

Hicks74 (Jan 31, 2006 2:31:10 PM)
Did you see Jai Eugene and de-committed from Meeeechigan, Rose OL is no longer interested in Meeeechigan (wants FSU or South Carolina) and the DE from NY is no longer interested in Meeeechigan because they were going to move him to LB..and oh yea,we got LARRY GRANT !! LLLLLOYD CARR IS DRINKIN' HEAVY ! You could probably squeeze a shot of Jack out of that big nose of his !! LOL !!!!!!

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:32:18 PM)
It has not been a good closing week for Michigan. Outside of landing Shilling it has been nothing but bad news.

hondo (Jan 31, 2006 2:32:41 PM)
Duane, based on what you are hearing, do you think we land Peters?

jsbuckeye (Jan 31, 2006 2:32:45 PM)
What are the odds on getting Peters in this class?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:34:01 PM)
He is playing this so close to the vest. The only school I am hearing is Ohio State. I am not making a prediction. I have not spoken to him. Buth when the question comes up everyone that will offer an opinion says Ohio State.

Kirk (Jan 31, 2006 2:34:07 PM)
Poz79 asks "Evans, Belton and Smith are three Ohio jr QBs who have been generating early buzz. Is it a three-man race for the best Ohio QB next season, or are there any sleepers? Does one of those three end up a Buckeye in your opinion?"

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:35:29 PM)
I think Belton would be hard pressed to say no to an offer. Mitchell Evans wouldn't. Smith has been coy. He seems to talk about the southern schools alot, especially Tennessee.

edbuck51 (Jan 31, 2006 2:35:40 PM)
What has you more excited, seeing if we get a Peters or McDaniels, or seeing who the coaches offer for next year's class later this week?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:36:44 PM)
Peters is more of a need, McDaniels and Small would be like Holmes and Ginn, but this next class is really something. I am most excited about it.

passhtebuck (Jan 31, 2006 2:36:52 PM)
Does the addition of Grant give you more confidence that our defense will come out of the gate strong?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:38:56 PM)
Yes. Grant has played at a higher level and is more mature. I think he handles the transition better. He is going to arrive early. That is really going to help. If one of the corners steps up things look alot better. It is still a bunch of first year starters but I feel better about a complete front 7 with some game experience. Grant helps that happen.

wwt (Jan 31, 2006 2:39:03 PM)
I don't think OSU would have offered any of these guys if they didn't think they'd qualify. With that said, do they have to worry about any of them qualifying :) or should I say do we have to hold our breath on any until June?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:40:18 PM)
Hold your breath. Look at the thing with Chichester. It took too long for me to relax. 4 top 100 players plus Grant. I will exhale in June.

PigMan (Jan 31, 2006 2:40:39 PM)
I have a question about Homan. I got to see him play twice this year, and quite honestly I was not blown away by him. Every time I hear someone talk about him they rave, but I can only go by what I saw for myself. I realize only two games doesn't give a complete picture, so I was wondering how many of his games you saw and your thoughts on him.

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:41:58 PM)
I saw 3 games and he was not another big fish in a small pond. He completely dominated all 3 games. He was so much better than anyone on the field he should not have been allowed out there.

TheKaiser21 (Jan 31, 2006 2:42:07 PM)
I know you said Peters and Mcdaniel are definitely in play? If Mcdaniel doesn't come through, do you see the staff offerring DJ, or banking the schollie?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:42:55 PM)
I have been told that they are still not sure about his academics. He could get that scholie but it will not be until June.

homesickbuck (Jan 31, 2006 2:43:04 PM)
Its seems that the staff has upset Chichester's coach. Was there a lack of communication? The last thing we need to do is have bad blood with H.S. coaches in Ohio. Did the staff really drop the ball here?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:43:46 PM)
I can't really say. I do not know enough about that situation to assign blame.

section22 (Jan 31, 2006 2:43:58 PM)
Did Chris Wells get used as a receiver coming out of the backfield in high school?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:44:53 PM)
No. I am sure they threw him the ball on occasion but he was not used in that way in high school to where we can make an assessment of him as a pass receiver out of the backfield.

Royal Flush47 (Jan 31, 2006 2:44:56 PM)
Are we going to lose two top 10 national prospects (Oglesby & Martin) to Notre Dame?

hondo (Jan 31, 2006 2:45:04 PM)
As of today do you think we land Martin next year?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:45:40 PM)
I don't know anything about oos juniors right now.

Royal Flush47 (Jan 31, 2006 2:46:50 PM)
Is Ben Martin as much of a lost cause concerning OSU as it feels? Or do you think we have a good shot?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:46:58 PM)
When I spoke to coach he said if Ben had to make the call today he thinks he could not do it. He said the kid loves Jim Tressel and what is going on at Ohio State but he also sees the tradition, the academics and Charlie Weis at Notre Dame.

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:47:06 PM)
Martin is in play.

buckgrad (Jan 31, 2006 2:47:16 PM)
Duane, can you rate the classes in the Big Ten 1-5. Thanks

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:48:14 PM)
I have not looked at the other classes enough to say. I wait until after signing day to do that. Right now I think Ohio State and Penn State are clearly the top 2.

spout (Jan 31, 2006 2:48:28 PM)
Hi Duane,do you recall any other "pipelines" like tosu has with the Tarblooders? Tosu earlier or another team nationally? thanx.

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:49:32 PM)
There are any number of them. What separates Glenville is the number of players coming out of the program. It is pretty mind boggling.

jsbuckeye (Jan 31, 2006 2:49:40 PM)
How would you rate Ray Small's speed and will he see the field next year?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:50:05 PM)
Most of the pipelines do not have players every year, let alone multiple players every year.

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:51:28 PM)
Small is one of the top 5 or 6 receivers I have seen in Ohio. He is Holmes with better speed. The Buckeyes are too deep for him to play right away. He would not get enough reps to warrant blowing a redshirt year. That is not in his best interest or the programs.

wormy23 (Jan 31, 2006 2:51:42 PM)
Duane, how is JT as a closer? Do you here consistent praise from the recruits and parents about his in-home efforts?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:54:07 PM)
I would stack him up against any coach in the country in the living room. He would be even more highly regarded if the Buckeyes strategy were different. They have not been in this situation alot. I mean so many players this late. They usually get off to good starts, pick up few kids throughout the year then have less battles this time of year.

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:55:02 PM)
I have heard from multiple players that he has sat in their houses for 2 hours and never mentioned football.

edbuck51 (Jan 31, 2006 2:54:19 PM)
It seems strange to me that Kerr hasn't got into the mix. What are your thoughts on him? He made a heck of a commitment to come here on his own dime, and has stuck it out even when he hasn't been the favorite son. I'd like to see him get in there.

whistler (Jan 31, 2006 2:54:24 PM)
why is everyone puuting kerr on the back burner. he was supposedly a stud his freshmen year at indiana and there was alot of excitment for him when he got here.

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:57:00 PM)
I have never thought Kerr would play here. He has been a fan favorite but has never been fast enough or athletic enough to push his way past the caliber of athlete Ohio State recruits. That is why he ended up at Indiana. I would disagree about the excitement. That was fans. Not the coaching staff and not we who evaluate talent. If he plays here it is because of lack of depth and the need for the freshmen to fill out.

buckgrad (Jan 31, 2006 2:57:24 PM)
DL depth worries me a bit, the only true DL we are bringing in is Larimore. What do you think of him? Is this an immediate impact guy like Pitcock, or more of a redshirt Jr. Sr. impact player? Thanks

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:59:35 PM)
Larimore could play but the depth is such that he won't. The thing is that depth goes away after next year. He is going to be in the mix his redshirt freshman year. I love wrestlers. They learn more abot leverage in one month of wrestling practice than one year of football practice. The last 2 great wrestlers that the Buckeyes landed were Luke Fickell and Tim Anderson.

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 2:59:55 PM)
I think we all remember those 2.

Hicks74 (Jan 31, 2006 3:00:06 PM)
Duane - With you comment on the OL class next year, not being impressive. Why not giving Nagy an offer this year than wait on a mediocre line class next year ? Or something of that sort ?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 3:02:24 PM)
Your guess is as good as mine. What puzzled me is they stayed on him until late. That made no sense to me. If there were some big time OLs with the Buckeyes on their short list it would have made sense. If they dropped him early it would have been because they didn't think he was Buckeye material. To stay on him but then not offer when there were no btter options was puzzling.

rbuck (Jan 31, 2006 3:02:36 PM)
With the verbal of Grant, any chance Johnson jumps to another school?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 3:02:57 PM)
No. They don't play the same position.

TroySmithWnaB (Jan 31, 2006 3:03:17 PM)
I feel JO'neil will be outstanding and could have a breakout year. Mitchell has been there for a while and played quite a bit, I think he'll step up big also. I can't say enough about the effort that Jenkins showed last year. I really think, even though we need one more in the secondary, we can be solid and maybe have a better chance of making big plays from the secodary next year. Your thoughts? Maybe Im too optomistic?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 3:05:29 PM)
Mitchell scares me. He was the anti-Nate Salley. He showed well in the passing game but I saw too many bad plays against the run. I think we could very easily see Devon Lyons take the FS job. I think O'Neal is odds on to win the SS job. There is talent to spare in the secondary. Game reps is the problem.

Johnny V (Jan 31, 2006 3:05:36 PM)
Do you see Chris Well pushing Mr. Pittman hard for that starting job and if so, maybe some two back sets?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 3:08:00 PM)
The 2 back set has gone the way of the dinosaur. Pittman is not big enough to be an effective blocker and that is one area Wells is lacking in. He learned his blocking habits from Jim Brown. Besides, I don't want either of them taking punishment unless they are carrying the ball. Wells will play. No doubt about that. He is going to have to work on his blocking to have a shot at taking down Pittman.

DDC (Jan 31, 2006 3:08:24 PM)
As of right now do you feel OSU will be a legit top 10 team from the start of next year? A lot of people are talking about how OSU will be a little overrated next year, and I think they are forgeting that OSU reloads as well as anyone when it comes to defense.

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 3:10:32 PM)
It will be a top 10 team. Maybe top 5. Reloading is not the problem. There is talent to spare. Game reps mean EVERYTHING. E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G. I want to prepare fans for the fact that there are going to be some numbers on the wrong side of th scorebard that you are not going to like early on.

wwt (Jan 31, 2006 3:10:55 PM)
Are you saying that the thing with Chichester came out of the blue? Did the staff not see this coming much before the 2 weeks or so ago that we heard about it? I thought this was just something we hadn't figured and the staff new long ago since he hadn't taken an official visit.

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 3:12:40 PM)
I just don't know enough about that situation to comment. I do not know what the staff knew. I do not know what was said to coach Cox.

Kirk (Jan 31, 2006 3:13:13 PM)
buckeye1515 asks "Would you consider this Jim Tressel's second best recruiting class since his arrival?"

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 3:14:24 PM)
You caught me off guard with that one. I am trying to put together the classes in my head. Off the top of my head I would say it is a definite contender.

TheKaiser21 (Jan 31, 2006 3:14:57 PM)
Do you think Joe Thomas was the only "Miss" in this class with the OL depth and lack of big time OL in next years class. I know we didn't land everybody we wanted, but this seems to be a case of being late to the party on him.

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 3:16:33 PM)
I loved Aaron Brown. They tried everything to get him, and Boren too, so I can't say missed is a good term. I don't know if we can call Johnson a miss because of the academics so yes, I would say he is the only "miss."

osufan26 (Jan 31, 2006 3:16:51 PM)
Hi Duane, Do you see any five star guys in ohio next year?

osufan26 (Jan 31, 2006 3:16:55 PM)
Are there any more names coming out next year that we haven't heard much of it? Who is this Brandon Saine? I heard the bucks have offered already. I also heard that Solomon Thomas from West Chester may be as good as Ben Martin?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 3:18:10 PM)
Earlier I was asked about Kerr. The big thing to look at is with his experience he should have been the first guy off the bench when Carpenter went down. If he didn't play then I don't see hwo he works his way into considerable minutes now.

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 3:19:25 PM)
I am still in the evaluation process on the juniors. Saine is a running back from Piqua. You can pick up info onboth he and Solomon on the site.

Mdbuck (Jan 31, 2006 3:19:42 PM)
Looking at the defence next year. I am nervous about the secondary with whom we lose, I will say this I heard that Freeman was good and will be healty. Is it true as Bobby Bowden once said " The more points my offence scores the better my defence becomes" and hopefully that will be the case this year.

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 3:22:07 PM)
I never heard that coming from him and considering how many great defensive teams and great players I have seen at Florida State I need to see it to believe it. I think early on the offense is going to carry this team. I think we could see the most explosive offense we have seen the days of Hoying/Glenn/George/Dudley.

wormy23 (Jan 31, 2006 3:22:12 PM)
Duane, do the Buckeyes offer aprroximately the same number of prospects as their peers?

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 3:23:41 PM)
I don't know enough about other teams recruiting strategy to say for sure but I can say this staff under Peterson is offering and recruiting less players. It allows the staff to spend more time on coaching and at the same time getting to know recruits better.

wwt (Jan 31, 2006 3:23:49 PM)
I'm trying to put you in a corner - you said you are holding your breath till June on some recruits yet OSU isn't offering DJ till they know something more in June. Sounds to me that the staff wouldn't have offered guys if they weren't confident.

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 3:25:21 PM)
Maybe they do. I have stopped trying to figure out what the admissions office is trying to do. You have to think that is the fact but I am not going to relax until final grades in June.

Kirk (Jan 31, 2006 3:25:26 PM)
Ok; we'll have to end with that one. Thanks everyone for joining us today and keep with us throughout the next couple of days for continuing coverage of signing day. During the day we'll have a running count of players added to the class as well as plenty of staff commentary, and then we'll be having some coverage of various signing ceremonies into tomorrow. Thanks for stopping by today!

Duane (Jan 31, 2006 3:26:15 PM)
See you on the boards. It is going to be an interesting 36 hours.
