Nevada; There is talk on the message boards about James L being the #1 MLB in 2006. What is your opinion? How does MDA look?
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:10:46 PM)
I always like to bet on seniors rising up and having great senior seasons under JT....it has happened time and time again......I think MDA will be "the guy"....people have forgotten how good he could be because of his injury bug......but he is 100% by all accounts now...
SteveHelwagen (Feb 20, 2006 1:11:03 PM)
This didn't take long (ha ha) ...
bb1 (Feb 20, 2006 1:11:06 PM)
Who was the mystery DB?
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:13:27 PM)
the mystery DB was........Chris Fox.....contrary to my dear dear friend Bill Greene's assertions that this was just a "courtesy call"-----this one went down to the last moments....and the OSU coaching staff's interest was 100% sincere...he had tested so well at camp(just behing Schwartz)
SteveHelwagen (Feb 20, 2006 1:14:14 PM)
I can attest to that. Independent of NB, I had rumblings this was the case and talked to Chris 3 different times in the 2 weeks leading up to signing day. Paul Haynes had been in contact, but the numbers must not have worked out.
Buckeyefan13 (Feb 20, 2006 1:14:23 PM)
Nevada do you have any further information on when Coach T is going to get his extension?
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:15:21 PM)
details are being worked out...there is absolutely no drama here....JT will be here for a long long long time.....
murphdawg (Feb 20, 2006 1:16:48 PM)
What has the staff been up to since signing day?
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:18:27 PM)
mostly sleeping and playing cards...haha....they are hard at work evaluating talent for 2007 offers, and getting ready for spring practice that starts in 2 months......plus winter conditioning starts this Thursday...
SteveHelwagen (Feb 20, 2006 1:18:50 PM)
Couple on out-of-state juniors ...
Buckeyefan13 (Feb 20, 2006 1:18:52 PM)
Nevada which out of state guys are you hearing we have a pretty good chance at?
bburks4144 (Feb 20, 2006 1:18:54 PM)
Do you think OSU can snag either Benn or Deonte Thompson? I think it would fill the big play ability that could be lost when/if Ginn leaves.
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:20:27 PM)
I think our best bet on an OOS player right now would be Blankenship...but trust me when I say that we haven't even scratched the surface on OOS players......the list at the end of the year will look NOTHING like the list right now.....its a LONG way to signing day....and with limited numbers it is going to be a highly selective process.....
not working (Feb 20, 2006 1:20:46 PM)
What is your opinion of the DEs next year? Duane thinks Wilson and Gholston will be starting by mid season. Do you see J Rich as a substitute player in 2006?
not working (Feb 20, 2006 1:21:28 PM)
Do you agree that Patterson reps primarily at DT and that his DE reps will probably be 3-4 nickel situations.
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:22:59 PM)
I just always believe that seniors save their best for last, and Jay is a guy who could be an impact player for us, if he just keeps the motor running...I think its Wilson and Richardson to start....will Gholston coming in on passing situations and getting after the QB.........I see Patterson is all DT now, and will have a Kenny Peterson type of impact inside...he is just so disruptive
semperfibuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:23:06 PM)
Nevada - thanks for chatting. DOes the staff expect the trio of Mitchum, Persona nd Skinner to fight for PT this year?
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:24:22 PM)
they will all three be in the two-deep.....Person is probably the furthest along of the three...but they will all contriubte......OL always develop the slowest, that is what made Pace such a freak....and Boone for that matter.....
bburks4144 (Feb 20, 2006 1:24:30 PM)
I talked to Pretorius this weekend, Friday night, after he was kicking at the Woody Hayes center, he told me he hit a 65 yarder... is he going to be in the man in 06? Also... is he on scholarship yet?
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:26:59 PM)
yes Pretorious and Pettrey are both on schollie..and they both have HUGE legs.....this is one area that JT has dramatically upgraded at OSU, and I'm not sure how many games it has one us--but it has been considerable.........how demoralizing is it to the other team to have to start on the 20 every time...??? and every time you kick it to Ginn he might take it to the house....that is a pretty big field position swing.......we can't have too many kickers in my opinion......
semperfibuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:27:15 PM)
Nevada - I have always liked Curt Lukens demeanor and game, but he has been injured/ playing out of position. Do you see him getting any PT this eyar, or is he simply stuck in the background?
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:29:03 PM)
you never want to give up on a player...but it sure seems like Curt has a little bit of what I call the "Jerry Westbrooks Syndrome"....he is a talented guy, but has had trouble findidng a positon........this is make or break for Curt.....
SteveHelwagen (Feb 20, 2006 1:29:30 PM)
Great call on Jerry Westbrooks -- is he an LB, RB or FB? Jack of all trades, master of none.

Several on instate recruiting in 2007 ...
Mr. February (Feb 20, 2006 1:29:47 PM)
Nevada....thanks for the chat.....which of the in-state top guys are the coaches most concerned about losing?
Buckeyefan13 (Feb 20, 2006 1:29:52 PM)
When does OSU get offers out to Eugene Clifford and HInes from Glenville
nevadafanatic (Feb 20, 2006 1:30:03 PM)
would getting Clifford and Ben Martin be the big coup for this years class?
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:32:17 PM)
well...you have to start with Big Ben Martin--we are in a dog fight with ND on him(and I'm sure others, before it is all said an done)....but we will leave nothing back in his recruitment---and so I am optimistic....I think we are in alot better position with Clifford than many have speculated....and the first Glenville kid that we want, that we miss on---will be the first........But we have to get Martin....Clear #1 player in the state
nevadafanatic (Feb 20, 2006 1:32:31 PM)
What WR do you think we will end up with in this class, any idea yet?
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:33:55 PM)
really really tough to say...but I would go with Torrence and Deonte Thompson right now..there will be SO MANY others in the mix......the initial lists are just vast....
Mr. February (Feb 20, 2006 1:34:04 PM)
Are any of the in-state QB's (Belton, Smith, Evans) Buckeye offer worthy? Or do we go OOS or nothing?
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:35:34 PM)
I think we will offer one guy.....and one guy only....watch summer camp....if it doesn't happen after that for these guys then it is most likely not happening.......
not working (Feb 20, 2006 1:35:43 PM)
What does Jamario need to do with his game to be good enough for the Buckeyes to win next year? We know he has the speed and toughness. How far away is he from "getting it"? Does he understand his role well enough to be a force in the middle of the field?
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:35:54 PM)
I happen to like Evans a lot.....
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:37:38 PM)
Jamario just needs to expand his knowledge of his assignments and scheme....he could get by on his physical abilities alone in HS......but he has spent a ton of time on film study..and I think he is ready to make an impact.....

I remember you said a few days ago on the boards that another verbal was comming soon. Any news on that front and is there any names you would care to share w/ us on who may be some early verbals as well as oos guys you think we have a good shot to land in 07? Thanks
Mr. February (Feb 20, 2006 1:37:55 PM)

nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:39:25 PM)

How warm and fuzzy is staff about the OL recreuiting for the 2007 class? Be as specific as possible.
Funkybuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:40:02 PM)
How do you see the 2007 Ohio class in comparison to 2006? Do you foresee earlier offers to out of state players this year, especially O-Line as it is a down year in state? I know we have offered three out of state, does this trend continue to other positions (I.e. out of state early offers) since OSU really has a lot of momentum.
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:43:12 PM)
Schepis is the guy that makes the most sense...Eric Thomas is another one that I think could project at terrific OL....again, watch the camp offers...all will be revealed at that time after a period of up close evaluation......OOS Oglesby, Blankenship and ODowd(from AZ) all have offers..but again, there will be many many many otheres that come into play.....we take 3 or 4 this year and contiune to build the depth.....
Mr. February (Feb 20, 2006 1:43:18 PM)
What's the latest on Derrel Johnson? Who was the mystery DB that we were in on at the end of the '06 class?
tj (Feb 20, 2006 1:43:28 PM)
I logged on a few minutes late so this may have been addressed, but is there anything new on our favorite son......D. Johnson?
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:44:35 PM)
I still believe that Johnson could round out the class--and there is one schollie remaining....I am rooting for him....as for the mystery DB....he was revealed earlier in the chat......so you will have to wait for it to be posted...LOL
ODOGG45 (Feb 20, 2006 1:44:49 PM)
Hey Nevada - please tell me your not hearing any chatter of Matta going to IU or IU coming after him.
TroySmithWnaB (Feb 20, 2006 1:44:56 PM)
Do you think Matta might entertain the idea of going to Indiana?
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:46:22 PM)
Matta isn't going anywhere.......UNLESS the NCAA does the unthinkable and unjustly penalizes the exisiting and future teams(there is a 0.00000001% chance of this happening).....rest easy........
tj (Feb 20, 2006 1:46:39 PM)
Hi Nevada, I am interested in what you have heard and observed relative to Charlie Wies. Specifically, the opinoins of coaches, players and administrators. Also, I wonder how successful you feel he will be in the long run. He comes across as being a meglamaniac. I wonder if that is an accurate description.
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:48:19 PM)
I think Weis will do well at ND...but he certainly will not dominate by any stretch of the imagination. His public personality is exactly who he is---and he is in love with Charlie. Makes him a perfect fit for Notre Dame in my opinion. LOL

Are there any academic situations going into Spring that are of concern?
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:49:59 PM)
there are always academic situations going on...constantly.....but no one is on "death's door" if that is what you are asking.......but one back stretch could change that for a handful of guys....but we monitor the heck out of those situations......there are few surprises here...
Mr. February (Feb 20, 2006 1:50:09 PM)
What State of Michigan kids do the coaches feel good about (Dionte Allen, Ronald Johnson, Taurian Washington etc.)?
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:52:09 PM)
Those are three good names to start with....but JT is starting to make inroads into the state up north--so there will be others.....problem is, that the state of Michigan is just not rich in HS talent(compared to Ohio, TX, CAL, FL, etc..) It was VERY telling that the HS Coaches Assoc in Michigan asked JT to be the keynote speaker.....unprecedented for an OSU coach to do that.....
not working (Feb 20, 2006 1:52:19 PM)
How do you see the back-up QB reps breaking down in the Spring and mop up reps in the 2006 games?
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:54:04 PM)
I think you have to keep Zwick ready..as he is just one scamble away from being that starter.....then I look to Robbie and Todd to split them......but Zwick will help us win a ballgame this year.......much like McMullen did.....
gstock05 (Feb 20, 2006 1:54:13 PM)
Ted Ginn Jr. obviously had a down year compared to the hype surrounding him. With Holmes leaving, is he the go to guy? He needs to work on his hands and overall reliability over the offseason. He not only needs to make plays, but he needs to help troy simply move the chains. Do you know how he's planning to improve in the offseason, and what other receivers are really impressing the OSU coaches?
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:56:02 PM)
TG was a QB in high school...people forget that....so WR was kind of a new position for him......but he has "gotten it" the last half of the year, and through the bowl season--so he will have a HUGE year.....Gonzo, Hall, Dukes and Robisikie will get the majority of the other catches......Dukes will be my pick for breakout star.....
not working (Feb 20, 2006 1:56:20 PM)
Will Mitchell be able to lead the back 4 in 2006 and allow OSU to win? Can he keep the guys in position to make enough plays?
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 1:58:35 PM)
I like Mitchell..I know my dear friend Duane has had concerns about his run support---by I don't have to remind you how many tackles that Nate Salley missed last year...and I think Mitchell plays the ball in the air much better than Nate(interception vs Indiana comes to mind, etc....) Again, look for the senior Mitchell to come up big.....could be a captain...
not working (Feb 20, 2006 1:58:47 PM)
Please comment on the position switches of Washington and Lyons. Is this a clue that Lyons will be a significant player at S in 2006? Were these players just frustrated with the depth chart at their old positions?
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 2:00:24 PM)
coaches try to put players in positions where they can be successful.....I think Lyons will see the field this year at safety...as we are loaded at WR----and Troy Smith can only chuck it so many times--with Pittman and Wells behind him begging for the rock...LOL
kleintime16 (Feb 20, 2006 2:00:30 PM)
This is a name that hasnt been spoken of a lot and I am curious about him because he has been "high" on OSU fot two years in the database ... Chaz Jones, the RB from Cleveland Heights, and info on this player?

I am not familiar with Chaz......my sleeper is Caleb Lipsky---keep an eye on him
WOODY68 (Feb 20, 2006 2:01:34 PM)
what is the latest with the defensive ends Soloman Thomas and Eric Thomas? Do they get offers or do they need to go to camp?
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 2:02:26 PM)
camp for both.......limited numbers and a very selective staff..but they could both end up Buckeyes....E Thomas on the OLine....
nevadafanatic (Feb 20, 2006 2:02:42 PM)

Chaz Jones played QB this year at Cleveland Heights, was one of the fastest players I saw this year on the field.

What does the staff see in Mo Wells future?
Weston (Feb 20, 2006 2:06:14 PM)
What would M Wells role be? Was that a good scholarship offer? Georgia tech coach always stated that Wells will never make it at tOSU as he is not a power formation RB
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 2:07:44 PM)
I am not giving up on Maurice Wells at all....put him in the "shot Ginn" position and give him the ball in space and he is dynamite.....running between the tackles in garbage time is not a good indicator of a small backs worth.......
Weston (Feb 20, 2006 2:08:01 PM)
Any news on Jordan? Is this his year? Also, who do think will be our QB in 07?
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 2:09:34 PM)
haven't heard much on Jordan..so I am not all that optimistic, but you never know...as I stated before...I just think Henton fits the mold that JT is looking for in this offense.....he LOVES those rushing yards that a mobile QB can contribute....
Buckeyefan13 (Feb 20, 2006 2:09:39 PM)

DaytonBuckeye (Feb 20, 2006 2:10:13 PM)
Nevadabuck, I have expected more accolades for Frost but haven't read anything about him. In watching him play he made some unbelievable catches. I am in no way a coach but wouldn’t and shouldn’t Coach T try and use is abilities more. It appears the light has clicked on for him. Plus, the competition between Nicol and Frost only means they are going to get better. You input please.
Buckeyefan13 (Feb 20, 2006 2:10:31 PM)
will Nicol come back strong?
nevadabuck (Feb 20, 2006 2:11:27 PM)
Frost is the man....could be the best TE in the Big 10 this year......as he has learned his assignments the game has slowed down for him and gotten easier....he will have a HUGE year this year.....Nicol will be a great backup if he can just hold on to the ball
Weston (Feb 20, 2006 2:11:38 PM)
