Chat Transcript - Nick Larkin

Cincinnati St. Xavier DL prospect Nick Larkin joined us in the Bucknuts Fan Club chat Thursday night. Here is what he had to say.

Kirk L. (Jun 6, 2002 8:21:01 PM)
Ok, let's get started...

nbuck (Jun 6, 2002 8:20:53 PM)
nick are you camping at osu?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:22:26 PM)
That is still up in the air right now as is my going to any camps this summer. My family is really tight with money and we are going to try to get out and see some of the new schools that have offered. However, if I do camp this year OSU will be the first one on my list.

nbuck (Jun 6, 2002 8:22:46 PM)
nick was has osu told you about a offer and how many d lineman they will take

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:24:10 PM)
Coach Heacock and Coach Tressel explained to me how tight the scholarship situation is right now. I don't remember them telling me how many dl's they were going to take this year but I know it is not alot.

calibuck (Jun 6, 2002 8:24:32 PM)
I heard you thought that "OSU is not interested in recruiting you"??? Why do you think that and what is your interest level in OSU?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:26:15 PM)
I believe OSU is interested in recruiting me. However they have a limited number of scholarships right now which makes it difficult for them to offer me. I am extremely inerested OSU and have been since I was young watching my cusin play for the Bucs.

nbuck (Jun 6, 2002 8:25:24 PM)
if offered will osu be among your top choices?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:26:30 PM)

calibuck (Jun 6, 2002 8:26:51 PM)
right on!!!

nbuck (Jun 6, 2002 8:26:52 PM)
who is your cousin?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:27:10 PM)
Matt Bonhaus DT 1995

nbuck (Jun 6, 2002 8:27:59 PM)
what are your current stats hgt wgt 40time?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:28:28 PM)
6'5 255 4.72

calibuck (Jun 6, 2002 8:28:10 PM)
I much weight do you believe you can add to your frame and can you improve an already acceptable 40 time???

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:29:42 PM)
Well, I gained around 15 lbs after basketball ended and improved upon my 40 time. I see myself playing around 285 with good speed.

nbuck (Jun 6, 2002 8:29:56 PM)
i have heard here in columbus that the cinci media does'nt cover osu that much do you think coach tressel is well known down there in cincinnati?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:31:10 PM)
Depends who you ask. To OSU fans Tressel is well known and celebrated down here. Have yet to meet someone who does not like what hes doing.

calibuck (Jun 6, 2002 8:30:52 PM) you think that OSU's success will increase in Cincy with Tressel?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:32:14 PM)
I do, however I also credit his assistants and their approach to recruiting. All of the coaches are very personable and down to earth.

Kirk L. (Jun 6, 2002 8:32:27 PM)
That's a good question and it's one that I wanted to get into a bit... what are your thoughts on how OSU is viewed down in Cincy? Do you think the players down there follow OSU closely or is the attitude not as strong as it is towards Columbus? Are other schools more popular among the players?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:33:34 PM)
Cincy definitely lacks the enthusiasm that Columbus has for OSU however when a kid gets an offer from OSU down here its pretty tough to pass up.

nbuck (Jun 6, 2002 8:32:24 PM)
nick how long will you wait to commit will you hang back to see if osu will offer?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:38:26 PM)
I'm going to take as much time as I need to decide. IF I havent found a school that I like by the season and OSU hasn't offered then I'll wait.

calibuck (Jun 6, 2002 8:35:52 PM)
What defense do you play in currently? What is your preference in the type of defense you want to play in college?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:39:34 PM)
We run a 3''4. I would like to play in a 3''4 if I had a choice. However there aren't many schools out there that run it.

Kirk L. (Jun 6, 2002 8:39:51 PM)
The next two questions are similar...

nbuck (Jun 6, 2002 8:37:51 PM)
nick do you want to primaraly a de or dt

BobbleHead (Jun 6, 2002 8:39:21 PM)
Sorry I'm late... and hopefully this hasn't already been asked... What position do you expect to play at this season and which to do you expect to play at in college?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:41:33 PM)
I play tackle in our 3''4 which is basically combination of a 4''4 de/dt. I played a little outside linebacker toward the end of the year. I will remain at dt next year but may see more action at olb. I would prefer to play de in college but I will play wherever I am needed.

Kirk L. (Jun 6, 2002 8:41:54 PM)
Nick, what would your top five schools be right now? Do you have a leader? What schools have offered?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:44:00 PM)
IF I had a top 5 of any school (offer or no offer) it would be Virginia, OSU, ND, BC, MICH. NO I don't have a leader. Uc, Miami (oh), Boston College, Virginia, Georgia Tech, Duke, Maryland, South Carolina, Pittsburgh, and Wake Forest have offered right now.

BobbleHead (Jun 6, 2002 8:43:22 PM)
What do you feel are your biggest strengths and weaknesses on the field?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:46:14 PM)
I feel I play the run really well. I believe I have a very quick and powerful first step and come off the edge very well. I need to work on my technique. This is only my second year of playing DT in highschool.

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:46:26 PM)
I had played olb before

nbuck (Jun 6, 2002 8:43:25 PM)
nick, what about your team this upcoming season besides yourself anyone else being recruited, and any up and coming underclassman that we might hear about in the future?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:48:42 PM)
In my class we don't seem to possess any major d 1 recruits. Our other DT is being recruited by a couple mid-majors. We have a freshman at St. Xavier that started for JV this year and in my mind will probably be our starting qb next year. Robby Shoenhoff 6'5 200 4.8

BobbleHead (Jun 6, 2002 8:47:12 PM)
Who was the toughest player you went up against last year?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:49:30 PM)
Kyle Ralph in practice everyday :)

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:50:05 PM)
in games Nolan OT from Doublin Cofflin

BobbleHead (Jun 6, 2002 8:50:38 PM)
haha, good answer

Kirk L. (Jun 6, 2002 8:50:49 PM)
Gotta ask... Kyle Ralph raved about Tony Gonzalez from Ignatius. Is he one of the better players you saw last year?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:51:37 PM)
absolutely, I was shocked to see he wasn't rated very high as a recruit before and hadn't got that much attention. He is an exceptional player

Kirk L. (Jun 6, 2002 8:52:24 PM)
What is the outlook for St. X this year? Do you think they'll make another run?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:54:04 PM)
We obviously won't have the talent that we had last year. Although we do lose a lot of players, this is the case most every year. St. X is usually a senior oriented team. Our DL will be very very good with 3 players back. Our OL will be inexperienced.

nbuck (Jun 6, 2002 8:52:40 PM)
what would you like to study in college, and are you qualified yet?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:55:08 PM)
I like to study Business ... possibly finance or econ. If your asking about eligibility, yes I am eligible

BobbleHead (Jun 6, 2002 8:54:26 PM)
How much will academics play into your decision?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:56:15 PM)
A lot, I want to go to a school that has a very good business school and is a major div 1 football school

Kirk L. (Jun 6, 2002 8:56:27 PM)
What pro player would you compare yourself to? Do you have a pro player you look up to?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:58:22 PM)
When my cousin was in the pros I looked up to him the most and really still do. I would compare myself to Michael Strahan ( I'm not implying that I am the most dominating tackle in the game) because he is big and has great speed

BobbleHead (Jun 6, 2002 8:57:36 PM)
What camps will you be attending this summer?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 8:59:39 PM)
That is still up in the air. My family is tight with money right now and we are going to get out and see some of the schools that have offered. However if I do end up going to a camp OSU will be number one

BobbleHead (Jun 6, 2002 8:58:58 PM)
Oh wow, who is your cousin?

Kirk L. (Jun 6, 2002 8:59:30 PM)
Matt Bonhaus... I didn't know that before!

BobbleHead (Jun 6, 2002 9:00:14 PM)
That's cool, the football talents run well in your family

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 9:00:38 PM)
Thank you, I am very fortunate

Kirk L. (Jun 6, 2002 9:00:56 PM)
Nick, do you have a deadline for a decision, or are you just going to let things ride out as they may?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 9:02:32 PM)
Hah, funny you ask that. Before things started to heat up I thought I would have made a decision by now. I would like to make a decision before the season starts however, I will take as much time as I need.

BobbleHead (Jun 6, 2002 9:01:11 PM)
Have you thought about your 5 official visits? Going to visit for the Michigan game?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 9:03:53 PM)
Yeah I have right now they would probally be UVA, OSU, BC, UCLA, and STANFORD. I would love to visit for that game. I went to a game last year. It was awesome.

Kirk L. (Jun 6, 2002 9:04:32 PM)
Nick what were some of your on-the-field stats last year?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 9:05:16 PM)
11.5 sacks, 71 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 34 hurries, 2 caused fumbles

BobbleHead (Jun 6, 2002 9:04:47 PM)
Any favorite football moments that you'd like to share with us?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 9:08:54 PM)
sure. We were playing Elder for the regional finals this year. Elder is huge rival of St. Xavier and a huge rival for me. I live 5 minutes from elder and everyone but 3 kids from my gradeschool went there. Pretty much everyone from my area goes to Elder. Anyway, we had beat elder earlier in the season by 3 and we we now playing for the regional finals in front a sold out crowd of 35,000 at Nippert Stadium. Score was 21-18, Elder was driving with 30 seconds to go 2nd down on the 45. I came up with a sack and on the following play we intercepted the ball and won the game.

BobbleHead (Jun 6, 2002 9:08:04 PM)
What keeps you busy apart from football? Any hobbies?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 9:10:14 PM)
I also play basketball and occasionally wrestle in summer tounaments. I' m really into computers as well.

MrBucknuts (Jun 6, 2002 9:11:46 PM)
Nick: Sorry I got on so late....anyone ask you,why does OSU struggle over the years with recruiting in Cincinnati? Any opinions?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 9:13:21 PM)
OSU doesn't really have the enthusiasm down here that is has up there in Columbus. But as I said earlier, when a kid gets offered by OSU down here it really turns some heads.

BobbleHead (Jun 6, 2002 9:13:50 PM)
Are there any college coaches (from any school) that have already made a big impression on you?

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 9:14:59 PM)
Coach Groh from UVA...Coach Heacock and Coach Tressle from OSU...Coach McCarty from Stanford.

Kirk L. (Jun 6, 2002 9:15:08 PM)
We'd like to thank Nick for joining us tonight... Nick, best of luck to you this season and in recruiting. Thanks again for stopping by!

BobbleHead (Jun 6, 2002 9:15:12 PM)
Thanks a bunch for your time Nick. Best of luck to you.

Nick Larkin (Jun 6, 2002 9:15:37 PM)
It was my pleasure, thank you for having me. I really enjoyed this.
